CONUS Lines Revisited Split Audio
One of the only complaints about my videos that I get goes something like this: "I can't hear the choos-choos for that guy talking over them" (or vice-versa). Now I try to balance the sound of the choos-choos with the narration as best that I can; just goes to prove the adage "You can't please all of the people all of the time..."
However, I will try to. Took me a long time to formulate a solution. This video represents that solution. The Narration is completely in the right channel. The sound of the trains is completely in the left (or is it the other way around?). By adjusting the balance control the viewer can get ANY mix of narration and train sounds that he wants.
If people like this video, I'll do it for all future videos.

Microcontrollers for Model Railroads
Переглядів 3232 роки тому
Here's my clinic titled "Microcontrollers for Model Railroading". This clinic is an update and generalization of my "LaunchPad for Model Railroads". It expands the earlier clinic to more microcontrollers. However this clinic dates from 2016, and I did not update it to 2022; so it may be inaccurate in spots. However, the ideas & techniques presented are still valid. Enjoy!
LaunchPad For Model Railroaders

Here's my clinic titled “LaunchPad For Model Railroaders”. This clinic was presented at the “Streetsville Junction” Convention in Toronto in 2013. It was only the second clinic that I had presented. Unfortunately, I was not familiar with my video camera, so I was not aware that my camera would shut down on its own after several minutes. Between day 1 & day 2, found a camera setting that allowed...
New York Society Of Model Engineers

On 1 Feb, 2017 I was at the New York Society of Model Engineers (NYSME). NYSME has both O Scale and HO layouts. On the O scale side, NYSME is a traditional club, providing multiple routes and long runs for members' equipment. I took some impromptu video. If you would like a more in-depth vidoe of this club, let me know in the comments. It may be possible to go back.
How to Get Started In 2 Rail O Scale

Here is a clinic detailing what to buy and where to find it to get started in 2 rail O Scale. Note: I have observed that in full screen mode some of the audio can be choppy. In that case just don't view it full screen.
CONUS Lines Revisited
Переглядів 3,5 тис.3 роки тому
No, I'm not changing the focus of this channel. It will remain overwhelmingly 2 Rail O Scale. However, occasionally, I will feature some layouts which exemplify the best practices of scale railroading even though it's 3 Rail. Rick Wright's CONUS Lines is just such a railroad. Rick follows scale practices with the exception that his locomotives remain 3 Rail. You can pick up most pieces of Rick'...
My O Scale B&O Layout Slide Show
Переглядів 1,3 тис.3 роки тому
Here is a slideshow of my former O Scale B&O layout. Putting together this slideshow took me down memory lane. I remembered how much effort it took to build something like this. But in typical Systems Engineer (my profession) fashion I took large tasks and broke them down into smaller tasks and attacked each one. Even looking back brought back warm memories. When I developed some medical proble...
Train on the Helix

Through the comments some people have requested more videos of my layout. Unfortunately I did not take many videos of my own layout, because I was waiting for more scenery to be completed. Then time ran out for me and the layout. Here's a video from 2010-2011 or so when the mainline and the helix were not completed and the backdrops were not fully finished. It was also during the time when I wa...
S Curves II

The 'S' curves on the Cranberry Grade on my then building (now dismantled) O Scale B&O layout. I was experimenting with post production video effects as I zoomed in on the second train. This is one of my earlier videos, as evidenced by the whitewashed basement walls before the backdrops went up. I originally published this to my blog back in the 'bad old days' when everyone did not have high sp...
2021 Layout Tour - Appalachian & Ohio
Переглядів 7 тис.3 роки тому
As part of an O Scale Central Zoom meeting on the 2021 Convention, David Stewart did a presentation describing his EPIC Appalachian & Ohio Railroad 2.0. I've extracted his talk from the meeting to create this video. This layout is a 'must-see'. It may well be the largest O Scale private layout in existence. In this video David goes into the history of the A&O, including the first version, A&O 1...
Open House

I held an open house for the Washington DC O Scale group in April 2015. This was in celebration of finishing the mainline on my then building (now dismantled) O Scale layout. It was well attended by model railroaders and there wives, who were invited. If you look closely at the two trains passing on Cranberry Grade, the uphill train is being pushed by a B&O Q4b in reverse. This was correct prot...

Two Freights

Two freight trains passing on the incomplete Cheat River scene on my then building (now dismantled) O Scale layout. Yes, that is a photo backdrop made using the techniques in my videos "Photo Backdrops Made Easy" and "Photo Backdrops Made Easy Part 2". It's a series of 3 photos taken from the road bridge downstream of the railroad bridge on the Cheat River. The second loco to cross the bridge i...

Nice models and layout, but that music, sounds like part of a 70’s porno…..
Another great series. The signaling with CTC is extreme overkill on the WM layout, IMO. But it doesn't have to be dark territory (though that can be fun). Light block signaling would be more believabke. But it's a fantastic layout, and the owner can do anything he wants.
Great layouts, modelers and photography! The interviews and questions were well rhought out . You let the modelers do most of the talking. The discourse from the modelers was relaxed and informative. This is the best interview series on model railroads I've ever seen. I think the reconstruction and movement of the legacy layouts had to be much more challenging than that modler was willing to admit. I have seen that kind of effort fail on more than one occasion. One example that fauled was on saving a section of John Allen's G&D.
R.I.P. Terry. Thanks for the tutorials.
Perfection!!!
We have a cabin near the right of way between Buffalo and Bailey. The detail of the rocks and trees is so accurate . The Como Roundhouse is a nice inclusion and the tank on top of Boreas pass looks very realistic. I am somewhat surprised that this museum quality work no longer exists.
Thank You Terry! Excellent topic and resource's!!! 😊😊
Wow! All these layouts are SO IMPRESSIVE. Especially the finally layout. The " preservation layout". It seems impossible to get it done right. The best in the business. !
Great job
Oh to have that On3 1880 DSP&P Consolidation
Aren't the stacks on your Locomotives actually used on wood burners?
Nice.
Thanks for putting this together Terry-great work! Has anyone heard anything about Chris Smith's N&W layout? Just wondering if it was ever finished. I love his scenery techniques......
Amazing video! I always loved this layout as a kid, was very sad to hear that it is long gone. Also, any way we can get a version of the video with just the trains? I do like the interview with Dodge, but I'd also like to be able to sit back and just watch trains run without needing to listen to the interview at times.
Much appreciated video.
Nice presentation on a very nice layout. Thanks for sharing "Part 2" of this model railroad.
i don't want to look at a model railway. Disappointed by your misleading title
Normally I would agree but the Andrew Dodge in the title gives it away. I found the photography and workmanship incredible
Pretty good video. However, the audio mixing causes the engine sounds to overpower the narrations. It’s to the point where much of it is unintelligible. I know making videos is very labor-intensive, but if you still have the original soundtracks, please consider remixing. It would then be an excellent video.
@0:10 Interesting logo the DSP&P once had. Such fine American narrow gauge locomotives, too.
Realism and detailing here is incredible!! :-)
I am very much 'hooked,' on these new MODULAR-sized units: I'm sorry I can't remember the name which is used, but I'm planning on a new full basement railroad: now, I'm going to build it modular - I'm not building a basement railroad, such that it can't be moved. I don't know the future, but this modular construction idea, inspires me. Building 2' x 8' modules, to the new height standard, makes me feel that if I move again, then I can pack up and not lose the hours and time I have put into the layout. This is an excellent video: thank you.
I just came upon these, wish they were still being done, as they show layouts I've always loved in magazines. And the very idea ANYONE would try to represent horseshoe curve in O scale, and doing a great job, is mind-blowing for a room smaller than an airplane hangar
I am still doing these videos. In fact, I have one "in the can". Stay tuned!
Very nice tribute!
The little buildings are beautifully made. I love it so much! 💖
Awesome stuff 👏
great incite in model railroading love that your wife was involved and your children. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome model railroad!
What a great video but the sound quality absolutely sucks. We can barely hear the builder over the sounds of the locomotives. Next time please reduce the volume of the trains when the builder is narrating and visa versa. Beautiful railroad and great video but it sure was hard to watch and listen to.
Layout is gone! Smartphones took its place!
too much whistle.
Beautiful layout !! Sad to hear it has gone, seems like such a waste. This was built to such a high standard that it could have been opened to the public. I'm sure the new layout will be every bit as good and I hope we get to see it. I kept looking for those "train-set" elements that spoil so many large layouts but I didn't find a single one. This is a true, proper model railway.😁👍
Andrew is a prolific modeler; no moss grows under his feet! The successor to the DSP&P was Andrew's P48 Colorado Midland in 1897. Highlighted in another of my videos. I said 'was' because the CM is now gone, to be replaced by a model of Maine two-footers. Stay tuned!
great videos, keep them coming!
Mr Terrance, you really provide the best explanations and provide such a professional video, hope we get to meet. v Jones, Evanston il
Beautiful! R.I.P. Art Selby... 🙏😌
I had the pleasure of visiting Art's layout a couple of times during the Mainline Hobbies layout tour event. Art was always a gracious host and his layout was quite expansive, he definitely filled up his building. He will be missed in the community.
Love the 3 rail, my Dad and I had that. Two rail is more realistic. My Dad, home from many battles in 1957, bought enormous amounts of Lionel. He smiled.
Aren't memories about Lionel trains the best?
Ok, let me start by stating that this railroad, and many others are Magnificent! They truly represent (perhaps) hundreds of thousands of people-hours, perhaps in excess of $100,000 in cash outlay - they are excellent. Now I wish to express a few thoughts - with respect, please. If you doubt my words, then please spend a few minutes and watch a REAL train pass by. Be critical, look closely. The power units, the engines most appear to have gone through a tar, oil, and dirt bath - this is realism. Most, not all, but most rolling stock is covered in dirt, and graffiti, some are slightly worn and torn up - a bit. NONE of these best of the best model railroads show any of these signs which reflect REALITY. This is one of my major gripes: next, listen closely to the sounds of a REAL train: there are squeals and squeaks, clangs and clanks, the clickity-clack of steel wheels passing over joints and switch points - NONE of this occurs on model railroads. Many of the rolling stock has plastic wheels - there are NO sounds. (Well, few sounds.) Why do manufacturers not produce a sound car - or sounds that represent the passing of a REAL train: I mean, stand beside a REAL train, and often, the squeals of steel on steel make you cover your ears - nothing like this exists on these wonderful model railroads. The sounds from the power units aren't great at best, but there is an attempt by manufacturers - manufacturers have missed, totally missed the sounds associated with rolling stock. Ok, well I get it, these wonderful railroads are the product of the owners or a club's cumulative thoughts and dreams - I get it, but an operating model railroad, to me, well I want to see tracks, track, and more tracks: I want to see turnouts, sidings, loop to loop, end to end, I want to see action - I don't care about these megacity additions to model railroads: to me, they are a distraction and detract from the RAILROAD. I want train action! Now a note directed to the manufacturers: we WANT SCALE metal WHEELS and scale wheel flanges - METAL - no more plastic nonsense. We want SCALE TRACK - SCALE wood and concrete ties. This is 2020 I believe: we want WiFi color cameras in the cabs of power units - imagine operating a train with an operational view from the cab - watch on a computer, on a tablet - imagine how NEAT this would be. Now, watch the rolling stock on these trains: they wiggle and wobble, they go into vibrational stress shakes - How about creating rolling stock with WEIGHT! Sure, I'm all about SCALE, but it's so unrealistic to see these cars act in a so unrealistic manner - which is a result of NO WEIGHT. ADD some weight to the rolling stock! Now, manufacturers - start adding graffiti and aging and dirt and perhaps a little damage to the rolling stock: it's nearly impossible to see rolling stock today, without graffiti and dirt, rust, and a little damage - these model railroads are a JOKE: every piece of rolling stock, most power units are brand new - it's ridiculous! My final thought relates to speed: most model railroads have issues with the length of rail from point A to point B. Therefore to create the vision of distance, we hide rail and run the trains slowly; here's my beef! Do these club and privately owned railroad owners hire Mario Andretti slot car racers to control a power unit? What's with this? I see trains running at break-neck speeds - WTF? Throw these clowns OUT - let them build their own indy 500 train race tracks - so many of these great model railroads, operate trains at speeds which are a JOKE - a total JOKE. Realism, slow it down, make it real. Enjoy the journey, enjoy the environment - race car drivers - BU@@@GG@@@ER off! Someone at these huge costly layouts needs to throw these fools OUT! Just 1 opinion; no disrespect intended. Oh yes, manufacturers, up your game - model railroading is a dying hobby: young people are NOT motivated to get into the hobby - as it is now, so much is toy-like and rather funny. Come on manufacturers: up your game before the hobby and your income are DEAD.
Terry, what is the purpose of the overhead feed? I did not see one single electric engine during this run. A lot of pomp, but no circumstance.
AS I said in the captions, Rick has several complete sets of equipment and, a few times a year, he changes the equipment on the layout. Some of these railroads used electric locomotives.
The interviewer needed a good cup of Joe and an ice water later on …
I have to ask Terry, I ended top finding this video and looksd up what the M&K junction looked like and its quite something. Will you include the two stall abandoned engine house on your layout off when it was in use?
Yes, I was intending to include the M&K junction engine house. If you read Roberts book, this structure has quite a history. It was expanded with the coming of diesels to M&K. This is the engine house. I would have modeled. Unfortunately, I have been forced to abandon this layout, and I have given it away. The engine house still exists (at least the last time I was at M&K). My album on the West End, has several photos of the engine house: tnt53.rrpicturearchives.net/archiveThumbs.aspx?id=15602
Would like to know if their will be more videos in the near future on this great layout would like to see the track plan as well as the size of your layout space that this railroad occupies great work THANK YOU for sharing.
I have a couple of train videos in the pipeline, when they get finished is uncertain. I move slowly nowadays because of Parkinson's.
Terry, I have fallen down the rabbit hole of 2rail o-scale. Played with Hornby trains in the 1970's growing up in the UK; the itch is back. So glad I came across all your educational videos here on UA-cam. I have not purchased anything yet, but Atlas track and MTH locomotives look good. I have an area of 11’x21’ to dedicate to a layout. Thank you for your informative and engaging videos. LaunchPad ... looks great! Jeff Daniel Miami, FL
thankyou for sharing, very nice
Appreciate the guide Terry! Nick B send me here after getting me hooked on O scale! I’ll be at Strasburg this year to get started, would love to meet you if you can make it,
Remember, if you want to get in to 2R O Scale at the lowest cost - patience! Haunt the forums, wait for bargains. Get to a 2R show, if you can. Stay away from legacy equipment until you get oriented.
Great job, Terry! I was in an extremely well known model railroad only shop a few years ago. I knew they must have some O scale due to their rich history. The guy working there (not the owner) told me they don't have any, and seemed puzzled by me asking about 2 Rail O scale. I wandered around and found a nice little 2 rail section that he didn't even know was there :)
A few years back, I was in The Model Railroad Shop in Piscataway, NJ. The owners did not know that back in the day, their shop manufactured a series of O Scale kits (a la the early O Scale Athern kits)! Needless to say, they had no 2 rail O Scale when I was there.
OMG hand layed track wow!
great video here- who makes the Wheeling and Lake Erie Diesel - seen early in the video is it MTH or is it Lionel ? or other?
I believe that all of Rick's locomotives are MTH. But I will email Rick and ask.
@@2railoscale Many thanks
Yes, Rick tells me it is MTH.
In Europe there are some 0 scale starter sets. Great video.
Thanks! May I inquire what an O Scale starter set costs?
@@2railoscale Quite a lot actually - Lenz has got a digital starter set, setting you back some 700ish Euros iirc. Surely not a cheap start! The O Scale scene is relatively small in Europe.
Nice layout. But this 3rail tracks looks stupid. Sorry but only my humble opinion folks.
This is cool! I have never seen O scale in 2 rails, only 3.
