Thanks! Using raw umber felt like a risk! I didn't know if it would all come together, but in the end I followed what I knew instinctively would work. I love trying new color combos. I imagine I will be starting with more dark colored backgrounds now and see where it all goes.

Thanks Cody! Yes, I have been asked numerous times to create a course on backgrounds only! LOL But you know I work back and forth constantly between the background and foreground to keep them integrated as a complete painting. Lots and lots of blending of edges is one way I achieve a soft look in my work.

Hi there! Thank you for your comment. I didn't know you were enrolled in my hydrangea course....thanks for that. YES, you will definitely see me add highlights in all 3 hydrangea demos. Just FYI, I do recommend that students watch the demos from start to finish before painting so that you can get an idea of the whole painting and what each step will be about. Yes! I should have addressed water soluble oils. My opinion of them is that I still prefer acrylics because they dry quickly, even with the glazing liquid or retarder added. Water soluble oils take weeks to dry! I find that using the acrylic mediums mentioned in my video gives my paints flexibility that I prefer. Thanks for watching and for your comment.

Thank you. Unfortunately, there is no cheap alternative to glazing liquid. Water will not work like glazing liquid, because it is the viscosity that gives this effect.

I paint them a solid color that I mix from the leftover paint on my palette.

I painted this a while back, so I am not certain on all of the colors. However, I have colors that know I used and are standard in my regular palette. Payne's grey, green gold, unbleached titanium, titanium white, indigo blue....the yellow was probably cadmium yellow medium. Hope that helps.
