Valvoline Restore and Protect 1st Usage Update
I've just completed the first oil change since using Valvoline 10W/40 Restore and Protect engine oil. So lets dive into the engine and filter to inspect them for any changes since the last time we looked at my Mitsubishi Outlander. I'll also dive into detail of the frequency of engine oil top ups that I've been doing since owning this car.

Will this Valvoline protection and restore help high mileage engines 101,000+ miles to slow oil leaks??
🥰🥰🧑🔧🧑🔧
Thanks for the comment!
Can this oil be used in diesel engines also?
@@khalidmanzoor6842 I personally wouldn't, it's only API SP which is not ideal on its own for diesels. SP has lower calcium levels to deal with direct injection petrol engines so it doesn't have the detergent package that a diesel engine requires
The classic blue restore is for diesel engines.
Hello from the US! I’ve been using VRP on my truck and siblings’ cars. It’s starting to clean up the inside of siblings engine pretty nicely!
You sir are a legend, big thumbs up for the super thanks
@@Shanes_Shed nah, I’m just a guy trying to get his truck to 500,000 miles.
Heyyyyyy you look familiar LOL. I still hope to try the bay box tonight!!!!
@@richcombs4805 🥳🥳🥳🥳 hahahahha
Shane, just dumped R&P 10w40 out of a 3MZ-FE that has been well looked after. Very dark so it seems to be working. Your oil change intervals are very long. I have shortened my intervals for R&P for cleaning purposes. The first oil dump was 3000km and will push it out longer on the next one.
I aim for 10,000km change intervals, but with work and home life sometimes getting busy it can take a bit to get onto it sometimes. I'd prefer to do an early filter change and leave the oil going for a bit anyway myself
My 2016 Volvo XC90 (the first year of its generation) was unfortunately outfitted with oil return rings that were too narrow, along with too few and too small holes in the piston itself behind those rings which they corrected this in 2017+. The only way the 2016 model doesn't burn oil is when those rings and holes are totally clear which is basically only when it's relatively new. Anyway, after 50K miles (when the warranty expired) I noticed the car burning oil and by 60K miles it was burning 1 quart every 1200 miles. The digital oil gauge goes from max to min after losing 1 quart of oil at which point the car warns you to add a quart of oil. At 70K miles I started Restore & Protect every 5K miles. I'm at 83K now so I'm 3K miles into my 3rd oil change and the oil level has only dropped 20% which means I lost only 1/5th of a quart in 3K miles. I am now a 100% believer in this stuff.
awesome feedback for the comment readers - thanks for sharing
Are you sure its 10W-40? The website for VRP shows only 3 weights. SAE 0W-20, SAE 5W-20, SAE 5W-30 unless you guys down under get a different product line.... I am trying VRP 0W-20 in my BMW 228I M sport since I got it at 88,000KM it burns around 1 quart every 1000KM so it will be a good test. I post updates on my channel.
We only have 2 lines here - 5W30 and 10W40
@@Shanes_Shed Would you be able to send me some of that oil? I could paypal you to pay for the delivery fees and the oil?
I could be arranged - fair warning when its not on sale the price is a little high here however. I've just seen that's its currently on sale for 50% off $49 (AUS$) for 5litres

i used this oil on my high mileage silverado and it blew my oil pan gasket and created leaks everywhere its probably due to the detergent package
No that's a problem with something else.
@@ampedupelectronicsyes issue was my gaskets was old and this oil was the nail in the coffin it's not uncommon for high detergent oil to cause leaks when it removes the sludge that was keeping the gaskets sealed
Used to hear similar things with synthetics when mineral had been used previously
@@Shanes_Shed yeah I'm scared to use synthetic on my semi back when it came out 5w-40 when you would use it it would burn like crazy nobody wanted it even now I still stick to blended for big rigs
😂
Is this compatible with Mitsubishi engines? Valvoline doesn't indicate or list Mitsubishi as compatible
It’s perfectly fine to be used with this engine, Mitsubishi recommended an API SM spec oil from memory, this oil only has an API SP spec which is the latest API spec and they are generally backward compatible with older specs. Personal opinion here - most people overthink the oil specs and viscosity grades are far more important and can do more damage if you get them wrong.
Awesome video, thanks Shane! 💯 I love that you covered every little step, it has given me the confidence to do it myself. So far so good 😁👍

Hi Shane As ever, great content. I was changing the D3 Water Connector Block (LR073372 in the UK) and have had the same issue as you show in the video. The barb on the 90 degree connector just crumbled. It's now holding on but won't last forever. Two questions: 1. Once the metal clip is removed from the 90 conector, should it just pull off of the old block or can they fuse. Mine won't give. 2. And I know the answer: would you swap out all of the coolant pipes / thermostat in one go? In the UK LR don't supply the 90 connector as a part anyway. Thanks again, great stuff.
yeah I found that many of those plastic fittings are only supplied with all the hose assembly's. Unusual for the connector to fuse as its only an oring that does the sealing but anything is possible. Id do the water connector block more often than the rest of the plastics as that one is prone to earlier failure. But yeah its not a bad idea to change them all at the same time.
Haahahhaha is that the BMW? What the heck.... brother ewwwwww that's royally wrong! haha

For which part? My memory is a little hazy of doing this job - its been a while since I done it. Might have to go back and rewatch my own video!
Great vid!, my compressor has just gone on my 2010 D4 2.7 tdv6, sounds like it’s a different model compressor though? Can I ask did you need to degas the system before removing the lines from the compressor?
Technically you need to degas it, but mine had already done that by itself😂
Thx Shane, for the good explanation. I’m very interested in getting this oil to resolve a minor oil consumption issue (1L/4K km) on my 23 yr old Honda civic which has been well maintained since new and done 235k km. Just wondering where did you get it from because I can only see repco & supercheaper-auto have this particular type of oil and the price is around AUD 100 (USD 62), which is 50% more expensive comparing the price in USA.
I’ve been purchasing it through Repco. It is expensive here, but most of the decent oils here are over $70 for a 5L container
@@Shanes_Shed thx. I just bought 2x 6L for AUD 77.6 each. They are on sale at Supercheaperauto this week.
Thanks!
Appreciate the comment and super thanks!
Seasons greetings, have you put thought to purchasing the original LHD set and use it for reflector replacement of the RHD lights. Might be an effort but could be a possibility?
I havent thought of that no. But the left headlight lens does have a small chip so probably not worth it with that one.
I'd love to try this oil but for some reason they dont make it any thicker then 5w30 here in the US? Vavolines own website doesn't even mention a 10w30 let alone a 10w40. If they are already making it and selling in in other countries, why the hell wouldn't they sell it here? This literally makes zero sense to me? I wonder if its some sort of EPA bullshit or something but that doesn't make sense considering you can get every other oil in a 10w30, 10w40, 15w40, and even a 20w50.
what do you feel is the most common viscosity in the US? Here anything in a SAE40 seems the most popular so maybe thats got something to do with it.
@Shanes_Shed Hands down 15w40 is the most common oil in the USA. However if we're only talking about gasoline engines that's hard to say? It used to be 10w30, however due to EPA fuel efficiency standards most new cars made in the last say 10 years are calling for super thin oils like 5w20 and now 0w20 oil, despite these engines really needing a thicker oil in most applications especially when they are driven hard. Many performance oriented cars will tell you to use something like 5w40 or even 20w50 for track use and then immediately to change back to 0w20 or something for street use, a clear explanation of what you're supposed to use vs what the government is mandating. If you drive the car hard on the street with that recommend thin oil bad things will happen like spun bearings. However they can't legally recommend you to use the correct oil anymore as it would put them out of compliance with emissions and CAFE numbers. Auto manufacturers are denying warranty claims on engines that are extremely well maintained and using the called for 5w20 oil and calling it abuse these days. Apparently driving a car the way it was meant to be is now abuse, even if the oil is changed every 3000 miles and the engine never exceeded its red line. Basically they are telling you to use the wrong oil, and then when it blows up after a few hours of driving it hard they are saying FU, you should have used the correct viscosity oil never told you about, or driving a car normally is track use.
Thanks for your helpful video. I happened to have just changed my propshaft and the tube that the old one was made of was a perfect fit to extract the old bush. Also used the old long bolt from when I replaced the rear bottom arm 👍
Love your ingenuity

The US seems to have embraced lower viscosity oils a lot more than we have here. xW-40 oils are very popular here still

Any recommendations for if the latch itself is stuck but the seat folds down? 😅
I think I've had the same problem in the past - normally it was because the latch is full of dirt and the seat won't latch down in place. In that case I freed it up by just cleaning it out and working it with the seat until it eventually cleared and latched.
