Wicklow Way | Hiking 100km in Ireland
Hiking the Wicklow Way, Ireland's perhaps best known long-distance hiking trail. We did the trail in 5 days south-north, starting from Tinahely and ending in Dublin. The trail goes through the Wicklow Mountains in County Wicklow, often referred to as "the Garden of Ireland". The route has both scenic mountains and valleys and forested sections, along with your typical Irish countryside. Glendalough valley is definitely the highlight, where you get to walk through the Monastic City (or its ruins).
If you have any questions about the Wicklow Way, let me know in the comments below!

Hiking 7 days in Scotland | West Highland Way

Possibly the best hiking trail in all of Scotland is the classic West Highland Way, streching from Milngavie near Glasgow to Fort William in the shadow of the UK's highest mountain Ben Nevis. The WHW is 155 km / 96 miles long and takes 5-9 days to complete. We hiked the West Highland Way in seven days over Easter in April 2023 and it was our second time completing it. Hiking the Cumbria Way, a classic British long distance trail in the Lake District National Park UK. Unlike most, we did the Cumbria Way North-South. We are planning to do the wicklow way end of may. Is it to challeging to start at clonegal and to do the tour in 5 days? because i see you started at Tinahely

    • @ElielHerleviPhotography
      @ElielHerleviPhotography 6 місяців тому

      I think it *can* be done in 5 days, as long as you're used to longer days and distances. Just keep in mind that many of the campsites/bnbs are not directly next to the trail so that'll add to the distance even more if you're planning to use them. The reason we didn't start at Clonegal was that we couldn't find suitable transport options from Dublin - in fact we actually had to take a taxi from Arklow to Tinahely as there were no buses to get us closer in time. Let me know if you have other questions!

    • @ND-ol5yg
      @ND-ol5yg 6 місяців тому

      @@ElielHerleviPhotography thanks for your response! transport from dublin airport to clonegal is challenging. One question, is there an alternative near the knockree hostel? • @franc9111

    I'm feeling me age. We did part of the Wicklow Way/Sli Cualann Nua when they hadn't yet finished it - that was in 1982. We started from Glendalough and stayed at Knockree Hostel, before going down to Bray and twiddling our toes in the sea. We got a bus back to the campsite where we had left the car - a 2CV. The campsite owner insisted that we left it parked across from his office so that he could keep an eye on it, for which we were most grateful. Car theft was already a thing at that time. From the pictures that I can see today, they've done a lot to protect the path itself and the hostel at Knockree has had some work done on it. When we were on the Way, much of it hadn't been signposted and wasn't in place as such and in fact even the part we were on didn't have many signs either. But we did have the very nice official bilingual map - I still have it today and the cover is pale yellow. After that, we drove over the Sally Gap going west, so we have never did set foot in Dublin. We did a lot of walking in the West - in Donegal, Conemara, Mayo and Kerry srl. At that time the walk guides usually just said - 'go up that mountain there and then go up the other one on the left and keep going'. Luckily on one of the Twelve Bens, a shepherd did manage to prevent us from walking over a cliff. Go raibh maith agat a chara.

    • @ElielHerleviPhotography
      @ElielHerleviPhotography 8 місяців тому

      Great question - this is something every WHW walker needs to figure out (unless hiking in the winter months). What we did is we decided to walk about 33km on the 2nd day so that we could wildcamp at the shores of Loch Lomond. See the spot at 4:02, which was maybe half a mile after the no camping zone ended and very close to the trail. The other option is as you said to use the camping site halfway through the no camping zone, or to get a permit for that one spot a bit further north, if wildcamping is your thing. If you can, I would get the permit as that's what we did in 2018, you just have to book that well in advance as those are very limited. I'd book that now if I were you, it'll save you from a gruelling 33km day 😄 Thanks for watching and I hope the trail treats you well in April!

    • @ElielHerleviPhotography
      @ElielHerleviPhotography 9 місяців тому

      Thanks! Water isn't an issue on this trail, there are enough campsites, towns etc. to get water and also enough streams and rivers as long as you can make it safe - personally I've always used water purification tablets and never had any issues. We both carried 0.75l water bottles and that was enough. 👍🏻

      Kiitos! 🙏🏻 Sanoisin että Finnairilla Edinburghiin ja sieltä junalla Glasgowhun ja edelleen Milngavieen josta reitti alkaa. Huhti-toukokuu on mun mielestä paras ajankohta, koska silloin ei vielä ole sääskiä (midges) joita tulee kun ilma lämpenee. Kesäkuussa niitä voi jo olla niin paljon että ei ole enää kovin nautinnollista, mutta luulisin että ainakin toukokuun ensimmäinen puolisko on vielä ihan ookoo. Toinen syy miksi oon kahdesti tehnyt tämän reitin keväällä on se, että mun mielestä Skotlanti näyttää hienommalta kun maasto on tuollainen punertavan ruskea, ennen kuin se muuttuu vihreäksi. Mutta se on makuasia 😄👍🏻
