Class 139 on the Stourbridge branch
In this short three minute video ( actually about as long as the actual journey takes) we take a ride on the unique class 139 Parry people mover between Stourbridge Junction and Stourbridge Town stations.
This ingenious little vehicle was designed around lightweight use being powered by a small lpg engine but captures the kinetic waste energy of braking to help operate it and save on fuel and whilst it makes six journeys back and forth every hour and runs from 6am to midnight it certainly gets some hefty patronage
Thanks to the drivers on the day we got a small insight into how it operates and you may catch the single line staff used to control access to the single line from the nearby Junction Signalbox

A Tale of One Bridge (WILMINGTON SWINGBRIDGE)
From proper railwaymen who knew their patch to spotty kids with no local knowledge in ROCs. Have stood on our local station many times and seen ROC signalling errors such as wrong routes and incorrect level crossing closures, all causing minor delays that add up over time.
A remarkable survival. I remember this line had a table all to itself in the National Rail Timetable book!
used to be twin line, righthand side went down a very steep incline to a goods yard. both lines were bi directionl but entirely seperate.station was much farther on ,on the left side
@@mickjones1941 thanks, that I never knew, it’s a lovely little short ride
I used to think driving the Olympia to High Street Ken shuttles were boring, but this is even worse! Good video though!
@@DistrictDriver I think it’s the shortest route I’ve been on, after that probably the Manchester Piccadilly to United Halt, the driver actually gave me a good description of how it all worked but didn’t want to be on camera saying it all, which could have made a more beefy fill to the little video.
Thanks for this very informative video.
@@Test-hw5fn always welcome 🤗
why do they need a towel to operate the switches and siignals levers??....
@@edwardgrayson-d4e years of acid and grease from hands tarnishes the highly polished handles so Generally they use cloths to prevent that. Some levers had moulded plastic handles to save on this but that was a later idea
I always look forward to these videos on a Friday. 🙂
@@JohnStokes-c1o thanks sir, now it’s back into the start of the year there’ll be a lot of a heritage and national mix. We think you l like what’s coming

I am from Pakistan and I am Assistant station master. In Pakistan Railway. Same system installed in my station Rahim yar khan. These cabin interlocking system is so good and safe and sound. Very secure system. Here trains working under absolute block system. My both side old tyer double block instrument installation.
@@BILAWALMalik-qn3hc thank you,
I thoroughly enjoyed my 6 years there as regular signalman 1982-88. 7-5-5 😢
White levers, white and colours Mmm. Bit more information there I think.
Westinghouse did a lot of the instrumentation on WW2 Royal Navy Submarines. When these boxes around Crewe were switched over to The Manchester ROC they sent shunting staff to sit with the Signalers for a couple of days to explain some of the shunt moves that they would be asked to perform. They were just not used to having to perform so many moves and constantly having to talk to the PIC's on duty in the yards around Crewe. Most of their work is done on an automatic basis and shunting is what you might call an inconvenience to them.
It's a shame when all this Railway history is just taken away. I started my Railway career in a little Manual Box, Garston Church Road, 35 years ago.
These big mechanical boxes are amazing. It really is in immaculate condition. Who, though, in the S&T department when that at4:28was installed couldn't spell "received"? 🤔 😁
@@AndreiTupolev I’ve seen better. The plan for the resignalling at Macclesfield had “Stroke” instead of “Stoke”
Wow no time to relax
I was in that box when it closed at midnight on Christmas Eve
@@JAMESJAMES26000 it’s a weird feeling being there when they go
I wish the box could be scooped up by a huge excavator and put in my backyard. Great video, and thanks for sharing.
Be nice if Crewe Heritage Centre could save it like with Crewe North and Exeter West. Am example of an original LNWR box would go just right with their collection
I hope the LNWR booking desk survived. It’s a shame all these odd boxes are closing. It’s like someone’s pet project to eradicate old and reliable things.
What a wonderful set up,truly a labour of love to recreate all that signalling at Preston.
Are they demolishing the box or is it going to end up at a heritage railway?
Thank you so much for this video. The gentleman you interviewed is my grandfather. I'll be sure to show him this video when I next visit him. ❤️
@@MostBronzeChunner you’re most welcome sir, had a good chat with him, my son loved his stories
@irseminorrailwayssection9491 he might have mentioned that he also builds miniature trains, the ones that you can ride on (there's a nearby park from that signal box that has a track). I used to ride on those all the time when I was a young kid. Each locomotive is built by hand. Literally everything was scratch built in his workshop.
Btw, my father (his son-in-law) found your UA-cam video via the algorithm. So this was indeed a lucky find.
@ brilliant 😁
Aren't the boxes in and around Stockport still in use ?
Yes , Edgeley 1 and 2 , Stockport 1 and 2 and Heaton Norris.
@@frasermitchell9183 yes they are, though they only use permissive working in rare circumstances whereas SSN and Salop Goods used them continually
Fantastic recording Salop box for nostalgia before its history 😢 Hopefully Crewe heritage centre can recover some of the fixtures and fittings 👍🏻
@@TheDaf95xf the blocks have gone to the Heritage Centre
White/Blue and White/Black levers, former FPL/ Point levers worked to maintain locking? Those Fletcher blocks have seen some sterling service judging by the state of the woodwork.
Correct
@@SpoonyMcSpoonface yes, when you don’t want to remove the locking due to complexity/time available or cost but wish to take the equipment out of service so even though the equipment is not there the locking still is in the frame Dinting was another example. Went from Mechanical points and fpls to motor points, the fpl lever still was kept and used so even though the motor point did all the work You had to set the non existent fpl lever to clear a route
damn, that box is gone now, wonder how long Severn bridge Junctions box will survive, replacing that will be a task, also sad when it happens, not the topic but its sort of relevant, right?
@@The_Grand_Autismo1 it’s an important question, listed or not the underlying keep of structures still continues and with limited access it’s ability to serve visitors is not helpful But who knows Never say bever

Crewe Railway Station not train station please
Living in Radstock myself, its lovely to see the signal box restored and working.
Nice to see the Bakelite commutators,a shame we couldn’t see them being used. I’ve seen Fletchers and standard Bakelite blocks with AB/PB flaps fitted to them but the slides on the panel face are novel.
@@SpoonyMcSpoonface indeed, and being left and right handed numbering too
For anyone wishing to smell Bakelite, Crewe Heritage Centre is the place.
Impressed at the merging of Block instruments into a modern panel, but at the same time, why is Manual Block still being used with a modern panel?
@@Novocastrian-wp4ll likely due to many factors including lack of track circuiting to carry train descriptions forward, SSN has very few over the points to speed shunting up and that would mean descriptions on re based systems dropping out Ironically in the end the new ROC workstation has rectified that with a combination of tracks and axle counters sections
❤
I worked in the Panel Room 83-89 as announcer. A dream job for a train crank! Great camaraderie.
Progress. But i still love my semaphores and levers.
Interesting setup. I struggle to comprehend it all. You folks must be really clever. 🙂
@@JohnStokes-c1o it’s the digital magic behind everything that’s the clever part
So happy to see our Siemens Insight simulator (that my team produced) given a video demonstrating its virtues for NR signaller training 😊
@@collexions I’m very happy you’re happy, maybe worth a video on how you make an idea reality if the company are up for it, We’d be interested
It's interesting to see how close Simsig is to the real thing.
Manchester ROC must be the ugliest building in Manchester. Hardly any windows or fresh air must be worse than working in Strangeways.
@@smudge0161 what about the Redrock cinema 🙃
@irseminorrailwayssection9491 Yes, the Redrock cinema is worse. Another level of ugliness.
I imagine many bobbies would find it soul destroying to go from pulling levers in an airy signal box to staring at screens all day at a ROC.
It’s interesting to see what it looks like now. Back in 1989 I was involved in the London Marylebone IECC, which was one of the earliest (soon after London Liverpool Street), and later on Slough New (Paddington to Heathrow) At that time the displays were the old CRT units - less flexible than modern flat screens. The size of the available screen units and their format (roughly 4x3) had a lot to do with the design of workable layouts and the method of working, including how to cope with screen failures that could occur occasionally. Originally, Marylebone had a pair of identical workstations, with one being able to take over from the other, or the work could be split across the two. At that time, Automatic Route Setting (ARS) was quite new, and there was a degree of concern about the workload, but in reality most of the time it was handled by one alone.
Really interesting seeing the modern signalling 😊 But also sad that the three signal boxes have closed 😢 Spent a lot of time trains spotting at coal yard and Basford hall 🙁
It's always re signalling and never upgrading catenary for higher speeds and introducing in cab signalling
@@SirHumpyA I believe the trials for the Incab signalling on the Ecml are going well so it is progressing
Thank you for all your really interesting videos - much appreciated !!
@@millersdalechinley you’re always welcome. That’s why we do them to show how everyone else does their thing

Incomprehensible to me but fascinating. I’ve walked and driven past that building lots of times and would have loved a peek inside.
@@doctortinkle3834 it’s the magic behind it that’s the fun part.
I did some work experiance with network rail back in 2008 and was given a day in the signal box. The guys actually took the time to explain things and allowed me to set points and signals was awesome.
‘Old’ New Street - I travelled from it and to it a lot in my youth - mainly to and from Newcastle. I have a love-hate relationship with it. I hated it because it was actually an inconvenience with its escalators and stairs down to the platforms. I loved it because, when I was very young, I could get onto a train pulled by a Deltic - my all-time favourite locomotive. I remember the signal box well. Personally I like Birmingham’s 60s architecture- the Rotunda, the old library and so on. It smacked of ‘the white heat’ of 60s Britain, and it’s a shame that a lot of examples of 60s architecture have been raised. Good to see the signal box preserved.
@@simonhodgetts6530 deltics. Bet you got some good views of them powering out the station from the box
