Переглядів 5 тис.3 роки тому
Have you ever wanted to make bread, or cake, or brownies while backpacking? Well, now you can! This is a replacement for the Outback Oven, which is no longer available. The Outback oven was an incredible oven that was both light weight and made amazing pizzas, cheese breads and all kinds of other amazing dishes. The one I show you to make is even lighter! A special thank you to Greg Nelson, who...

Why did JetBoil remove the FluxRing from their skillet line?
I’m new to dehydrating. How long does it last when vacuum sealed properly? So much conflicting info on the internet. Thanks
Non stick material is very toxic
For all you car campers, the OXO pre seasoned carbon steel pans with removable handles are hard to beat! They are available in 8,10 and 12 inch. However, as a word of caution, they may tempt you to want to toss all your old pans in the garbage in short order! I have found that it embodies all the attributes that i seek in a pan: space efficient, durable, cooks evenly, cleans easily, versatile (grill, stovetop, induction, oven, etc…) and non-stick (after seasoning)! None of these pans are in the same league!
Would the soto windmaster stove be good for the jetboil skillet?
Who would ever cook in a fry pan without a fat to lubricate it? What a strange test
Thank you for sharing this great informative video with us! Much appreciated!
So impressed with your videos. Keep it up :)

Your thread choices were what I was curious about. It would likely work as well - or better - to use fine gauge beading wire (stainless steel) and a large eye needle to hand sew - or simply staple it with a standard plier stapler (not a desktop stapler or a staple gun) Both options would be cheaper and non-melt. I have a “fancy” Omnia oven, and a two DIY versions - made from thrifted components. It has been the insulation/cosy that has had me stumped.
I just found a big dehydrator someone left on the curb to give away and started backpacking a few months ago. Perfect timing! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Go down to that creek down there and grab a handful of sand and scrub it with that, then rinse in the creek. Sand is your friend.
Great video with lot off stuff - explained
An old fashioned hint: put the end of a tin can on the stove, and set the pan onto it. They’re light weight, take a couple of different sizes. It spreads the heat quite nicely. Kinda inexpensive too. 😏 Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
Can you comment. onthe nonstick capabilites or how you clean them? Whould you recomend pans with nonstick coatings vs the ones in theis video?
I agree with those saying best video on the basics of pots/pans for backpacking!!
I have a 5" titanium frying pan. What I learn from doing pancakes is that you need to flip the pancakes quick for them not to stick completely. You can't let the wet side dry before turning them over cause it would be too late it will stick to the pan.
You gotta save the water 😢
Best video I’ve ever seen on the topic, thank you
There has never been a long-term study of Aluminum's effect on human body. Everyone assumes there was one, but that's not true. Every single opinion regarding Aluminum's effects are either scientific conjecture or pure fabrication. Yes, if you breathe it in or ingest it in large quantity it will likely cause harm but that's same for Stainless Steel which leaches Nickel and Chromium into your food, two elements known to cause, in large quantity, occupational asthma, eye irritation and damage, perforated eardrums, respiratory irritation, kidney damage, liver damage, pulmonary congestion and edema, upper abdominal pain, etc. So don't worry about using aluminum pots, even for cooking acidic food.
Hard anodised aluminium is fine. Were it not the case governments would step in to prohibit their manufacture, certainly in the U.K. and EU.
T Fal anyone?
The person need 3 different pots, a pot to boil water (it can be titanium), a pot to cooking food like rice (this pot need be stainless or aluminum), and a pot to fry things, a frypan (it can´t be titanium).. If the person want to use only a uniq pot for all, never use titanium, it will burn your food.
An option is, carry the light weight, thin pan, AND the lid of a tin can. Place the lid over the center of the pot rest, set the frying pan on the lid. The lid serves to both shield the center portion of the pan, and helps to spread heat outwards along the pan bottom. HINT: tin can lids come in several different diameters. You may want to carry an assortment of sizes on the first try. Experiment to see which works best with your stove-pan combinations. Tin can lids are cheap and plentiful. Exotic frying pans, on the other hand aren’t either. Just a thought. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
The best posts ever made for wilderness camping where the Swiss made Sigg nesting pots. They came in four sizes, 1-2-3-4 liter depending on the size and type of trip and number of people the lids could be used as a plate and have tight fitting lip. they also have a locking bale. I have been using them for over 50 years, 25 of those years in our out-fitting business. To reduce fuel consumption, they are painted with high heat black paint on the outside. The one leader pot can store the Seva 123 or the more powerful Optimus 00. Nesting pots with tight lids make so much sense.
Where would I get that?
Season your pans and they'll be nonstick
free palestine
It's a good idea to season the bare titanium pans, olive oil plus a lot of heat and it becomes more non stick
Big curry fan is what i am. Great video.. thanks
make more videos
Thank you for doing this! Nice video
Put that water in with your rice when cooking it (prior to dehydrating said rice?) I hope to do that exact thing, in fact, prior to my next trip.
Are yout test fry maple pan
Thank you so much for your review. I see why it’s your favorite. I am definitely looking forward to purchasing one. Great review
60$ now. You bumped up their cost 😂
Thin pancake you say 😂... That flapjack is thick
Toaks is still rather expensive. Widesea is accessible and pretty good. They’ve a bunch of heat exchanger pots, but I personally really like their titanium stuff. They’ve two billy pots one 1.3L for 23€ and one 1.9l for 29 €. Now that’s fair pricing!
I found s big stainless steel cup from the dollar general store, it was part of the grease strainer / storage cup, similar to the Imusa mug
Thanks for sharing that book. Gonna have to get one! 👍
Finding an effective frying pan is my biggest struggle. I had a good light one for years but the teflon layer is coming loose unfortunately. Replacement requires me to buy a whole pan set which I don't want to do. I think you could find something that weights 4 ounces excluding the pot grabber.
I know the weight may place this outside of your comfort zone, but i have found the perfect pan for my car camping trips! The OXO 8” 10” or 12” carbon steel pans with removable handle! It’s induction, broiler, oven and grill safe! It comes pre seasoned and takes on a nice non-stick patina very easily! I use it in the kitchen, outside on the grill and when camping! Once you cook on carbon steel you’ll never go back! There’s a reason why the Matfer Bourgeat Black Carbon Steel Fry Pan is considered the best (amongst both chefs and amateurs)! The OXO brand comes in a close second! It’s just a thought…
It may not seem cool, but in my opinion a small to medium cast iron pan is best.
When I fried with Coleman 505B, i used a 6" lid ftom a large juice can as a diffuser between the flame and the pan, to spread the heat more evenly. It worked!
Hands down Firemaple is the best.
Just picked one of those up and glad i did -- thanks for the video as it confirms what i was thinking about it !!
If you have a Titanium pot you can completely toss it in a camp fire for 10 minutes an pull it out. Whatever was baked on will be gone. The sponge though. Man instead of half you can cut it into 6. Even a 1 by 1 inch piece will get the job done.
I bring a pack of fragrance free baby wipes, after wiping out all the food, i burn the wipes then using a tad of bottle water to lightly rinse, then air dry. Those wipes can be used for all over your body besides cleaning dishes, non toxic, wont hurt you, doing your dishes or wiping your body clean, sort of like a towel bath. I also use the method in my off grid cabin, basically to not use so much water. Most cast iron pans(why you should get them) you basically just wipe out. I have all stainless steel pots, which what i cook in them, i wont scorch or burn,, i bring a metal scrub pad not a green scrub pad, if have to scrub a pot i use as little water as possible and the metal scrub will usually clean. I take one 16.9 oz water bottle of water, adding several drops of dawn dish detergent, then lightly pour a small amount of water in pan, using paper towels wipe up the soap and residue, i do all my dishes this way, the most imnportant part is wiping all the left over food off your plates, silverware, cups, before you use the soap water bottle, you could use a spray bottle with soap water too, and then one spray bottle of clean water to act as rinse, using a clean dry kitchen towel , i dry off my dishes...presto dishes done. They spray bottle method is easiest and fast. Just dont wait to clean your dishes, bacteria and germs from food wont grow that fast, and food wont harden, i use paper towels and burn them in wood stove...to wipe off the food after meal. I try to be green, paper is recycleable and the food is food, doesnt contaninate the environment like clorox wipes. Ive used this method for years living off grid. I use only DAWN dish soap, it wont harm anything . I do use clorox sanitizing wipes for the counter and kitchen surfaces and cutting board. I do have two washing dish pans. In my cabin I have some electricty from solar panels, i use a coffee maker to make hot water, just dont add ground coffee, then in dish pan i pour the hot water and equal room temp water, makes very hot water for washing dishes, then i use a gallon jug and rinse off the dishes ion second dish pan. Ive ran across a lot of RV camping people and offgriders and told them about how to do dishes this way, saves so much time and water and effort. I studied many 1800s ways of normal things we do everyday to live off grid. Doing your dishes this way for a few weeks, you get faster at it and it not any harder than using a auto dishwasher, considering you have to rinse off the diishes first anyways.
what exactly is the allure of wandering around the woods like a retard? and then you want to bring all the comforts of home with you? sorry but backpacking, hiking and all that other nonsense you grizzly adams wanna be types do is really fcking stupid
Did you even use any cooking oil?
Don’t sweat than you’re food will also stink
Yup Titanium pan sucks for frying Wether seasoned or not
