Birding at Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge
We spent several hours at Horicon on June 2, 2024. It started out quite foggy which made for some interesting views. Ultimately we had great weather. My favorites were the Yellow-headed Blackbirds who I've never really seen well before. They were everywhere along Marsh road and quite gregarious.

Birding Wyalusing State Park and Effigy Mound National Monument, May 2024
Переглядів 146День тому
I camped for 2 nights at this state park situated at the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers. It is a beautiful place. The main campground is high on a bluff overlooking both magnificent rivers. It is a nesting sit for the rare Cerulean Warbler. Unfortunately, I did not get any video of them. But, sitting in my campsite late in the day, an American Redstart and Cerulean Warbler h...

This crane family was feeding right along a road. They didn't seem to be bothered by the cars or the bulldozer. Luckily, it's a 25mph zone. Hopefully they do okay.

Sandhill Cranes and Canada Goose Part 3, a Sad Ending
Переглядів 4,4 тис.21 день тому
I'm so sorry to let you all know. Our little gosling has succumbed to the jaws of a canine. Unfortunately she/he was too injured to be saved. It would have been so fun to see her/him grow up with the cranes and see what happened. Would the goose have though they were a crane their whole life? Would they have gone over to the geese? We will never know. The first 90 seconds is new footage, the re...

Sandhill Cranes Raising a Canada Goose Baby!!!
Переглядів 120 тис.Місяць тому
This pair of Sandhill Cranes was found to be raising a Canada Goose baby at a local park. This video is a bit long, but I couldn't cut any of the cuteness! This is such interesting behavior. Doing a brief google search shows this was documented another time in Michigan in 2019. I hope there will be future episodes documenting this interesting saga.

It's been an exciting start to spring migration in Madison, Wisconsin: First with a Hooded Warbler at a local park and then an early Prothonotary Warbler at another park. Spring is also a great time to witness courtship/mating behaviors in the birds. This video shows 2 male Red-bellied Woodpeckers displaying for a female and a male Wood Duck "protecting" his female from 2 other males. Also a gr...

Usually both Wood Ducks and Hooded Mergansers are quite skittish and I don't get opportunity for good photos or videos. For some reason, they tolerated me this day. It was also fun to capture the breath of the Sandhill Cranes!

Wow. This is so cool. The captive geese on the campus where I work hatched 10 goslings about a month ago. These geese are at least 15 years old and this is the 1st time they've hatched a brood that I'm aware of. It's been fun watching them grow.

🌈🌈🌈That is super rare behavior. Most animals or even birds don't raise babies if they are not there's let alone another species of birds, etc. It would be very interesting to know how this gosling would mature later in life. Cranes are omnivores, while geese are herbivorous. Every time I see geese they are always pulling up grass at the local park to eat. That gosling is going to be so confused when he gets larger, if he even make it that long.🌈🌈🌈 🌈

My theory is mama goose was in labor and couldn't get back to her nest on time, so she laid the egg in a random (crane) nest, and left. Coincidentally, the cranes' eggs didn't hatch.

  • @MegaRudeBoy69

It's like a lion caring for a baby lamb. They would have eaten it, if it was smaller. Maybe that was the original intention, then a parental instinct kicked in. Luckily the goose is a all-a-rounder and can also eat what the cranes eat, but i wonder if it will instinctively take to grazing. So many questions... In any case, wonderfully bizarre.

Fascinating! What happens in situations like this when the goose grows up? Will it join a flock of other geese, or will it keep hanging around cranes? How will this impact its survival chances?

This is so cute 💜 It reminds me of the time a pair of loons adopted a baby duck. The duckling began riding on the parent's backs and would dive for fish, just like a baby loonlet! It was fascinating, because those behaviors are very unnatural for mallard ducks. I wonder if this gosling has picked up any crane behaviors, too.
