I wanted to see these amazing insects. We only had to drive about an hour. The sound was amazing. A constant hum that you can hear in the video. It was so loud we couldn't hear bird songs easily. We were in a wooded area. There were 1000s of exoskeletons on the trail and dozens of emerging/recently emerged cicadas. It's amazing that this species only emerges, as a group, every 17 years. This is a few miscellaneous birds from May 2024. It seemed to be a slow spring for warbler migration in Madison, WI. I was so excited to capture a Magnolia Warbler singing (at about 4:20), but when I ended my walk I noticed my microphone was not plugged in the cord just dangling. So it was just the camera microphone.

I love to watch bathing birds, I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because they seem so vulnerable while bathing. Usually when I sit in a good bathing spot, numerous species come in to bathe. This particular spring is very inviting to the birds on a hot day. HoNeeUm Pond which is part of the UW Arboretum. Madison, WI.
Birding at Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge

We spent several hours at Horicon on June 2, 2024. It started out quite foggy which made for some interesting views. Ultimately we had great weather. My favorites were the Yellow-headed Blackbirds who I've never really seen well before. They were everywhere along Marsh road and quite gregarious. Wisconsin, June 2, 2024

I camped for 2 nights at this state park situated at the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers. It is a beautiful place. The main campground is high on a bluff overlooking both magnificent rivers. It is a nesting sit for the rare Cerulean Warbler. Unfortunately, I did not get any video of them. This crane family was feeding right along a road. They didn't seem to be bothered by the cars or the bulldozer. Luckily, it's a 25mph zone. Hopefully they do okay.

I was surprised by the Bobwhite call at the 5 minute mark. I checked eBird and one has been reported from the Douglas County Wildlife Area a few days ago, flagged as an exotic escapee.
I'm so glad you noticed that--I hoped someone would. When I was there, Merlin didn't pick it up. I've been meaning to ask a good birder what it was . . . I'll have to put it in eBird for that day. Thanks!
