Hi! I am small, 172 cm. 81,5 PBH. Part of my bikes background include Scott Tampico and Cannondale Rush (first versión) on 26; Trek Superfly Carbon and Jones Spaceframe LWB in 29. For me, 29 where a real game changer on technical terrain. Go through obstacules easily, real confortable, quick…. I like your video because my only concern about the Riv’s is that I will need to go with 650’s. And after using 29rs, I have real doubts. I am totally convinced based on my own experience, that with has much more influence in confort than diameter. But… on the rest: moving through obstacules or speed? Not totally convinced.

I have a surly troll that I will never get rid off...I would love to get a Rivendell Atlantis as early this year I purchased a Rivendell A Homer Hilsen and it is the smoothes bike I have ever ridden. but I love my Surly Troll for touring as I know I can go anywhere with the troll. I think what it comes down to for me is you should get the bike that you love to ride and can get you from point a to point b and can carry what you want. I love carrying a really good compact tent and my sleeping system is s most. Comfort at night is a premium for me , some clothes and food and the troll checks all the boxes, plus I use deraileurs front and rear and a triple chainring and 26 inch wheels that are strong and allow me to fit the bike better on ships, trains, buses , planes and trucks, what it is interesting to me is the bike industry like all other consumer based industries are trying to sell things but at the end of the day, I have learned that simple is better, less is better and the less stuff you carry the better you are going to travel regardless of road surface. Interesting subject.

Being from Nottingham in the UK, the birthplace of Raleigh bikes, I fitted Raleigh branded North Road bars to three of my bikes, two of which originally had straight bars. They are really comfortable, and fitted to an adjustable stem, you can fine tune them for different types of riding. I much prefer an upright position when riding on the road, but slightly lower and further forward for off road. I also want to try some Moustache style bars at some point.

Love your chats....awesome stuff and you explain things in. a way we can all understand. I have an A Homer Hilsen and I am deciding if I am going to get an Apaloosa or Atlantis or the Platy, as I want it for touring so, it is likely between the Appa and the Atlantis. Cheers and thanks for the content.

I just restored an old steel framed Raleigh and as soon as I took it out for a ride, the only way I could describe the gloriously alive feeling was that I was sitting "in" not "on" the bike - I thought I was crackers for describing the ride quality that way. So having seen your description of the Riv ride quality, that means that either a) I'm not crackers and that feeling is real or b) We're both crackers.

If you ask me surly charges too much for their bikes. Yes they are dead simple and tough. But they're also simple without any bearing pivots for suspension. What's the tubing made of. Some kind of unobtainium? Are they handpicked by juan Valdez? Don't get me wrong great bikes the ergonomics seem awesome and my style of bike but I want to see the reason to pay that much money for something that is basically a large frame mountain bike with a few extra holes in the forest so you can put a bag there I'll break out the zip ties if I need something to put a bag on

It’s possible to do both . I’m sentimental about my 1993 Kona lava dome . Fits me like a glove but ultimately it’s a daily rat bike . That sentimentality does not stop me desiring a crust romanceur or a Velo orange polyvalent . Bikes bring joy . Chase the joy . Ride for fun and the love of it . Channels like yours , probably riding , Tim fitzwater , the radavist and path less pedalled and Henry wildeberry are really really inspiring . Thanks for the daily stoke .

I hear you . Here in Manchester in the uk we have some good cycling road infrastructure but it’s far from perfect . Most of the older Surly frames where great all-rounder bikes. I love my 2011 KM with its 1/18" headset, rim-brake or disc-brake mounts. The newer ones are just fashion items in my opinion, with 44mm head-tubes and disc-only brake mounts. It is more and more difficult to build "part-bins" bikes using the newer Surly frames. I'll also refer to your other video ua-cam.com/video/_sYupwauRhE/v-deo.htmlsi=hYBkPbbaRg5_Y7sC and agree with you 100%. It's getting more and more difficult to make a Surly "Your own"!

I’m not sure what the latest complaints are about build spec, but they’ve been going on for as long as I can remember. The frame will last your lifetime. Components are temporary (for the most part). If the handlebars are high enough for you on the complete, go for it. If not you’re going to have to spend more money on a frame up build. Have your LBS do that with a BC, or call James at Analog and get yourself a Hardtack.

I'm committed to wide range doubles with smallish (34-40 tooth) large chainrings. Example: My most modern bike has an 11-42 11-speed cassette paired with a 34-24 double. My fat bike has a 12-36 9-speed with a 36-22 double. My current project has a 12-34 9-speed with a 40-24 double. I ride all three on the large chainring 90+% of the time and yet have a serious low gear if I need it. I don't worry about not having a tall top gear as I can do 20+ mph on level ground when I want to and coast down hill most of the time.

I have a modern index-shifter for my rear derailleur, but have swapped over to a friction-shifter for my front derailleur (3x8 hybrid bike). Up until now I've never really got on with front derailleurs, and ALWAYS found that the range at the back would cause chain rubbing somehow, somwhere up at the front, no matter how careful I was with the front indexing, As a consequence, over the years I've always been in a hurry to convert to 1x drivetrains. A friction-shifter has eliminated all of that in one go. Why reinvent the wheel? It just feels a lot more intuitive for a front derailleur. In my opinion it still has its place in the modern world, and sits right next to modern hydraulic brakes, air-fork remote lockout, GPS, etc... on my bars. 👍

I think it will be interesting to see where things go from here. With car ownership becoming less sensible due to cost and ride share availability for those specific trips that really require a car perhaps we will see more of an investment in bicycle friendly planning become increasingly widespread on the local level. We can hope.
