Between The Buried And Me | Swim To The Moon | Orchestral Cover
Title: Swim to the Moon
Artist: Between the Buried and Me
Background:
I had been wanting to cover something from these guys for a while so a couple months ago I asked r/BetweenTheBuriedAndMe which track they'd like to see an orchestral cover of. "Go big or go home, Swim To The Moon" was the most upvoted comment so I decided to go with that one and... man... they were NOT kidding. This is a mammoth track (even by prog metal standards) but it has so much zany personality that I never grew tired of working on it. Along the way I got to break out not only some fun drum programming but an absolutely demented pipe organ solo. Hopefully it captures the spirit of the original!
Also you'll notice I did something pretty drastically different with the visualization this time around. It was a bit more work but I liked the process a lot and it changed the way I thought about orchestrating. This is my first time notating a track in actual sheet music so forgive my mistakes with the markings. I might stick with this format or go back to midi scroll in the future -- I'm still undecided.

Fallujah | Sapphire | Orchestral Cover
Переглядів 3,5 тис.2 роки тому
Title: Sapphire Artist: Fallujah Background: Technical Death Metal probably wouldn't be most people's first choice when trying to find a genre to readapt to orchestra but after my last cover I was really craving something on the faster side. So I landed on Sapphire, an amazing track by Fallujah that has been a favorite of mine ever since it was released back in 2014. I knew some of the more tec...
Isis (the Band) | Orchestral Suite

Artist: Isis Background: This is a medley of songs from the Boston post-metal band Isis arranged for orchestra. I love just about everything this band has put out, so picking and choosing which songs to use in the suite involved a lot of tough decisions. In the planning stage I tried to keep it to just signature moments from my favorites but I still ended up with over 33 minutes of material jus...
Expiate

Title: Expiate Background: This was a sketch I made a few months back before I got sucked into other projects. I suppose I'd describe it as cinematic...ish? It's mostly just experimenting with different textures and moods. I still haven't quite nailed how to generate those big fuzzy walls of sounds using VST guitars so I'll have to keep working at that. Next project is another orchestral cover ...
The Contortionist | Godspeed | Orchestral Cover

Title: Godspeed Artist: The Contortionist Background: My first cover! The original is from The Contortionist's album Clairvoyant and it's a track that really means a lot to me. I knew it would be fun to adapt all the usual prog metal goodness, like metric modulation, time changes, etc. but I really wanted to capture the introspective quieter sections of the song too. Luckily, an orchestra has a...
Winds of Pestilence

Title: Winds of Pestilence Background: I had the skeleton of this made back in April but didn't decide to turn it into an actual piece until a couple weeks ago. Very fun to make. The Igorrr influence is pretty obvious but there's a little bonus jam if you stick around to the end. As a rule of thumb, I usually try not to program any drums I couldn't actually perform but I threw that rule out the...

Title: Set Sail! Artwork: www.flickr.com/photos/136041510@N05/22498328565 Background: I wanted to take another shot at an orchestral piece so I started putting this together about a month-and-a-half ago. When I made Improvised Justice last year I think I got in over my head but I can gladly say writing for orchestra was a lot more fun the second time around. Although I didn't really have a spec...
Rain Check

Title: Rain Check Background: This was the first 'full' composition I made. The feeling of cancelled plans, disappointment, and the pandemic all came together over the course of an afternoon into this short piece. In terms of underlying theory, I knew I wanted it to be a lilting, almost anticipatory rhythm so I went with 19/8 as the time signature but harmonically I just sort of threw things to...
Wapiti

Title: Wapiti Background: This was the second full song I ever made, back in summer 2020. It was to fulfill a request to make an "Experimental Black Metal" track for a friend. I was missing some vital ingredients to make a song like that but I improvised with what I had. No dedicated guitar vst? Use a free power chord 8dio library and the free Spitfire LABS Amplified Cello Quartet put through a...
Improvised Justice

Title: Improvised Justice Background: I created this back in September 2020 as a request for a "superhero theme" for a DnD character (the image above is a cheesy custom one a friend made for the campaign). I had maybe produced 20 seconds of orchestral music in my lifetime so I was working with very little experience and sort of learned as I went. It was a massive undertaking and even though loo...
Bleed the Stones

Title: Bleed the Stones Background: I completed this last summer and it was my first (and only) foray so far into music for a dark fantasy setting. I had just finished the game Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and felt inspired to write something in that vein. Dark ERA and Voices of War were both excellent sample libraries for the project and very easy to work with but the most fun part was the sou...
Planetarium

Title: Planetarium Background: I created this ambient(ish) track back in February, starting it off with a working title of "Clarinets suck". Since I had trouble using clarinets in compositions before, this was my attempt to get over my beef with the instrument. Influences include a variety of minimalist composers and the hostile architecture of the video game NaissanceE.

Title: This Place is Not a Place of Honor Image: www.mat.ucsb.edu/~g.legrady/academic/courses/09f130/10000yrs/WEB/keepoutWIPP2.htm Background: This piece is an experimental and thematic exercise. I was inspired by the challenges that designers faced in the 90s of trying to make a "universal" warning sign that could be placed on nuclear waste sites. Whatever they made would have to endure and be...
Perennials

Title: Perennials Background: Like the majority of my projects, this was arranged over several weeks as a fun passion project designed to push myself as a songwriter. Early on in the song's arrangement, Stephen Bassett offered his talents on the guitar and his solo around 3:00 really helped the whole thing take shape. His solo was recorded on his phone and improvised in just a couple takes. We ...
Wow
Absolutely brilliant 💚🤘🎸🔥
the 9/4 intro is sick as fuck.
Bless the algorithm!! 😭😭😭 Immediate like and subscribe 💚↘️↖️
If any song deserves an orchestral cover, it's this
I was looking for an instrumental version of this epic. This will absolutely do!!
Bless the algorithm for bringing me here after listening to the 2024 Sapphire remaster
Holy fuck. What kind of autism is this?
Wow dude great work man.
This was literally unbelievable
This is incredible and so beautiful! ...AND at the same time just makes me all the more in awe of BTBAM as composers. Thank you for making this cover, which truly shines, highlighting the band's creative genius!
That. Was. Fucking. Unreal...
Genius. Incredible! Thanks for this fantastic work!
hee hee my funny intentionally foreboding spikes :3
holy titssss this is my favorite song of theirs, thanks for doing this!!! its so well done, all the differences in harmonizations and dynamics really show how much effort went into this, good job.
"roll forearms across keys"
Took an entire orchestra to do what a 5-piece band can do.
The breakdown fucking slaps 🎉🎉🎉
Incredible account of work this was. Thank you so much for creating it, it was amazing!
“Hey kitty kitty, don’t be shy”
So epic! It would be great to see Selkies: The Endless Obsession in the orchestral style also.
1 year later and this still dazzles me.
Wow man kinda speechless here... thanks for sharing this with people...
Instant sub
Thank fuckin god for you ❤️
This is absolutely INCREDIBLE! Very well done, mate. Bring more whenever you can!
Love it love it love it ❤
Wow dude! Have you sent this to BTBAM?
Wow... This is absolutely amazing
Putting the full drum solo was an excellent decision.
I love how sudden the kit come in at the drum solo, it makes me imagine Richardson just spontaneously appearing and absolutely killing it! Lol
Namco needs to make Xenogears 2, so this can be the final boss music
This is incredible work dude. Can I ask you what plug ins or libraries you're using for the orchestra
Hope btbam hears this
transcendent, my dude
Oh my God. My ears needed this. I can't believe what I'm hearing, this is absolute insanity! I love it!
That was really sick, good work 👍
This is really amazing. Would you like to do the same for Viljans Öga by Änglagård? Just in case you plan to do more. I think it would be perfect!
"You don't understand... Your quest of looking for the ancient treasure will only doom all of us! Soon you will unleash it wrath to the earth and every men will see you as nothing but a curse bringer!" Said the defeated Leader of The Child of Spiked Forest Cult after all of his member have been slained by The Emperor's Army.
The Spiked Forest Cult would actually make sense in one potential solution for this problem. One person suggested an "Atomic Priesthood" that would pass on knowledge of nuclear waste sites for years through ritual and myth. Basically Nuclear Catholics
roll forearms across keys lol just how tommy does it
god damn incredible
Why am I only discovering this now? This is mindblowing, would love some more of this.
Can someone put the original song over it?
This is my favorite BTBAM song of all time, and hearing this is absolutely beautiful, the pre-chorus made me cry.
Godspeed works so well as an orchestral piece, your cover undeniably did it justice. This song is a masterpiece, as is the whole album
I never listening the original song yet, but this bring me goosebump 😳
You HAVE to listen to it! It's just as beautiful!
I did it! damn, the drum's polyrythm is crazy.
Please do integral birth by cynic next!
Wow I am amazed! I will literally by an album of this right off the bat. I come from an orchestral background and ISIS is just the best!
This is awesome! Must have taken so much effort. Which sample libraries did you use here?
Thank you for the kind words! Cinematic Studios for strings, piano, and woodwinds. Also JXL for all brass (except trumpets which were CSB), Metropolis Ark 1/4 for choirs, cineharpsichord/harps, Tina guo vol. 1, and Atelier sax for the solo. Percussion was Cineperc, JXL, GGD Invasion for the drumset, and various Met Arks. Finally, spitfire labs and a few other free libraries covered any missing bases I had. Edit: Added a few I forgot
@@AstralP0rk You deserve it! Thanks for your elaborate answer. It sounds awesome!
OH. MY. GOD 🔥
