I suppose you could make it into one. It's an old traditional song (from what I've learned it has been claimed both by Ireland and Scotland) often played at the end of an evening or at a wake/funeral to celebrate the end of a life well-lived. In any case, I've always thought it to be such a beautiful and haunting song.

It’s actually a misnomer. The guitar is tuned the same but is strung with a set of thin gauge “high tension” strings called a Nashville set. It’s basically all the thin strings from a 12 string on a 6 string. It’s a called a Nashville set because guys from Nashville started buying 12 string sets and using this way many years ago. Now they sell sets called Nashville tuning or high tension sets.

Not a chance. Nothing like the full bodied 12 String RIC tone - especially the classic sound with Toaster pickups, the .0047 capacitor, a JangleBox and a Vox AC 30. The 12 is a work of art. The 6 is half of a work of art ;)

Outstanding. Now that I’m aware of it I’m hearing it on lots of stuff. Alex Lifeson from Rush got some of his killer, shimmery tones by layering in Nashville string guitars, too. It was an eye opener for me; I guess I’m just late to the party!

Absolutely! For me it was a revelation. I’d really wanted to love the Rickenbacker guitar but despite how cool it was, it never sounded that great to me. The Nashville tuning made me fall in love with that guitar on a whole new level. Now I find it integral to tracking guitars for the songs I write. It adds this lovely, jangly chime to any song and really adds a new layer to each recording.

Exactly! I’ve been playing guitar for decades and only came across this a couple of years ago. I’m sure lots of other people have heard of this, but it was new to me. I really dig the high strung/Nashville tuning on the Rickenbacker. It seems to compliment its inherent tonal characteristics.

Yes! I really dig the sound. I’ve never used it onstage, but I have used it in the studio and the results are magnificent!

I may just join that club. Had a spare MIM Strat I needed to sell to subsidize a dream one that came along, but you got me rethinking that plan :-D

@@roughcutguitars I so agree. I mean, nothing replaces a good 12 string, but it really does give you that vibe and feel - and ion the cheap! I bet it would sound killer on a strat. I bought a set for an acoustic but the Rick sounds so good strung up that way that I haven’t bothered. Let me know how it sounds when you string up the Fender.

@@coqueross Funny thing: I HAVE 3 twelve-strings, one of them a Ricky 660, the others are a Gretsch semi-hollow with the courses switched Ric-style and a Guild acoustic. But this would be fun to have in the back pocket anyway.

@@roughcutguitars totally! Plus, less money on strings, less tuning and it allows you to deliver just the high string strings without the regular ones. It’s a win-win.

Bummer. My bass player saw them at the Lyric Theater in Stuart, Florida last month and said the bass was way too loud and the kick was overbearing. That’s a drag.
