Nashville tuning on a Rickenbacker guitar is magical

- Stringing a Rickenbacker 6-string with a high strung/Nashville set of strings brings out some truly magical tones. If you've ever wanted that jangly 12-string sound but wanted to try something other than a full 12-string guitar, a Nashville or High-strung set of strings may be for you. It produces only the octave-higher sound without the regular strings and sounds great on recordings against a track with a regular clean guitar or acoustic guitar track. It is reminiscent of Roger McGuinn from The Byrds or Tom Petty. I love the sound and it has led to some really beautiful sounds on my studio recordings. Let me know what you think of the sound against my American Fender Stratocaster. Both the Rickenback Fireglo 360 and the 40th anniversary strat are played through a modified Vox AC4 HW (or hand wired) amp.

Having grown up in the 60’s and early 70’s, I always feel a sense of nostalgia whenever ever I hear a RIC! Great memories!
Me too! That sound, that beautiful jangly sound has such a potent Proustian element to it. You’re right, it does conjure great memories!
Rickenbacker 12 string sales just took a hit! 😀
LOL! Hysterical! I hadn’t thought about it, but you may be right! 😹
Not a chance.
Nothing like the full bodied 12 String RIC tone - especially the classic sound with Toaster pickups, the .0047 capacitor, a JangleBox and a Vox AC 30.
The 12 is a work of art. The 6 is half of a work of art ;)
@@karmicselling4252As much as this turns my ear for sure, in the long run NOTHING like a 12-string Ric when you want a 12-string Ric.
But this does very nicely in a pinch.
I keep a small, travel-size acoustic strung Nashville style. For some reason, it sounds great on Christmas tunes as opposed to standard tuning.
I love that idea! I’m gonna try that, too. ‘Tis the season!!
Just a terrific Gene Clark song. The Gene Clark songs on the first Byrds album are among the best ‘60s songs
Absolutely! And, it’s such a fun song to sing!
Absolutely no lie.
Hi-strung tuning is very cool, especially when mixed with other guitars in standard tuning. Chime city there, you sound like a blend of The Byrds and Tom Petty.
Absolutely! It’s such a great sound when mixed j to a recoding with other guitar tracks. It adds that perfect chime and jangle on the top end.
Right???
considering Petty did a cover OF THIS Byrds song, yes... sounds just like both of them. :) I noticed it right away. :)
"Feel a Whole Lot Better" (The Byrds), right?
yup
Yes!!! Good call! I love that song!
Sure is. A signature song for our local rock band when I was a kid back in the 60's.
i've thought of nashville tuning as a secret weapon - some would say a cheat - to get that byrdsy 12-string jangle w/o having to have a 12-string electric or the technique to use it effectively. i keep a squire strat hi-strung and just finger pic those cowboy chords. i like how it sounds, regardless of whether there's another guitarist on stage.
Yes! I really dig the sound. I’ve never used it onstage, but I have used it in the studio and the results are magnificent!
I may just join that club. Had a spare MIM Strat I needed to sell to subsidize a dream one that came along, but you got me rethinking that plan :-D
@@roughcutguitars I so agree. I mean, nothing replaces a good 12 string, but it really does give you that vibe and feel - and ion the cheap! I bet it would sound killer on a strat. I bought a set for an acoustic but the Rick sounds so good strung up that way that I haven’t bothered. Let me know how it sounds when you string up the Fender.
@@coqueross Funny thing: I HAVE 3 twelve-strings, one of them a Ricky 660, the others are a Gretsch semi-hollow with the courses switched Ric-style and a Guild acoustic. But this would be fun to have in the back pocket anyway.
@@roughcutguitars totally! Plus, less money on strings, less tuning and it allows you to deliver just the high string strings without the regular ones. It’s a win-win.
I've always loved going through phases of using high strung on an acoustic. never thought to try it on an electric
It’s fun on either. The electric records really well against regular string guitars. Btw, I love your cat profile picture 😻😻😻
@coqueross I bet! A lot of folks looking to get the sound of 12 from a 6 would do well to give this a look & listen before plunking down on a Mosaic or the like. And it shows especially well on a Ric, thanks!
Wild Horses by the Stones uses a Nashville tuning on one of the guitars. You can find this tuning in some Pink Floyd songs too.
Outstanding. Now that I’m aware of it I’m hearing it on lots of stuff. Alex Lifeson from Rush got some of his killer, shimmery tones by layering in Nashville string guitars, too. It was an eye opener for me; I guess I’m just late to the party!
Nashville tuning sounds great on any guitar. Nice to blend with regular tuned guitar.
True dat! I love the way they sound against a track with another clean guitar.
wow
Cool, huh? I’ve been playing for decades and only leaned about this a couple years ago. 😺
@@coqueross same
Nashville Tuning works great on all 6 String Electric Guitars but it sounds lovely on a Rickenbacker.
Absolutely! For me it was a revelation. I’d really wanted to love the Rickenbacker guitar but despite how cool it was, it never sounded that great to me. The Nashville tuning made me fall in love with that guitar on a whole new level. Now I find it integral to tracking guitars for the songs I write. It adds this lovely, jangly chime to any song and really adds a new layer to each recording.
@@coqueross Now you finally love the Rickenbacker, great for getting that Beatles sound.
Rickenbacker
Also sounds a lot like Tom Petty She's Gonna Listen to Her Heart...
I do them in a medley.
Absolutely!
This has me on needles and pins.
Lol! If I’d known the response I was gonna get to this video I would’ve asked D’Addario to sponsor me! 😹

It’s like a 12 string set without the lower octaves
Exactly! I’ve been playing guitar for decades and only came across this a couple of years ago. I’m sure lots of other people have heard of this, but it was new to me. I really dig the high strung/Nashville tuning on the Rickenbacker. It seems to compliment its inherent tonal characteristics.
record both on the same part but push one hard left and the other hard right and then listen!
@@coqueross
Sounds great, but its Backer not bocker.
What is Nashville tuning?
It’s actually a misnomer. The guitar is tuned the same but is strung with a set of thin gauge “high tension” strings called a Nashville set. It’s basically all the thin strings from a 12 string on a 6 string. It’s a called a Nashville set because guys from Nashville started buying 12 string sets and using this way many years ago. Now they sell sets called Nashville tuning or high tension sets.
I prefer the tone of the strat..
Well..... you should have then had them playing together in unison.... That is even more to the point I reckon, so ya could demo the resulting twelve string sound with the two guitars strung differently..... That would have been brilliant.... Disappointed.
