I could imagine some sort of jazzy bass riff playing in the background to 90% of these images, so atmospheric to that sort of 1950s/60s animation era, very much what Ren & Stimpy was parroting in the 90s.
Thank the heavens they released a new collection of his work! I recently got into Shane Glines and could never get his art books because of the ludicrous prices. I didn't even know this just released. thanks for the heads up and great video.
Looks like a mix of some of the WB Animated DC series and a bit of the mix of style that Genndy Tartakovsky did. Interesting how abstracted the shape language can go while still being appealing, the guy knows his way around construction in that style there.
14:53 Princess Leia! This is very informative, as an artist who wants to do animation I have been trying to find a way to stylize my character designs more because I mostly draw them in more realistic proportions. I have watched Batman the animated series recently and am now watching Batman beyond because I’ve been recommended to do so. This art really shows less is more and the gesture of these characters are very dynamic.
Yes, looking at the work the WB animators we’re doing is certainly a great place to look for inspiration. You might also want to track down some of the Batman comics that were put out at the time to tie in with the cartoons. There were several that were actually drawn by artists from the cartoons. Good luck with animation goals!
@@jacklambert4958 That’s the one. I used to watch it with my daughter. I couldn’t find a mention anywhere that he worked on that show, but it does remind me of the show.

The weird thing is that it went up four dollars overnight. Anyway thanks again for sharing that book. You have turned me on to several great books. I got that Frazetta book you reviewed a few weeks ago. It awesome.
@@jacklambert4958 yeah the price changed a number of times in the few days I was watching it. Glad to hear you checked out some of my other videos. Thanks.
Yes, I'm glad this came out at an affordable price and seems to be generating a lot of interest. I just want a really nice hardback deluxe edition in the future. And also maybe another book that would give us a tour of his early work in animation. I'm sure Shane would rool his eyes thinking about how much work I would be asking him to do to create such a book, but I'm just daydreaming here. Thanks for watching.
@@smackroscoe it’s bare bones and the printing is good, but not as good as I had hoped for, although for the price it’s great. I wish he would do a big deluxe edition. But I think he handles it all himself so that may not be in the cards.
@@philiplivdan2297 you’re the second person to make a joke about the name Shange Gillis. I have no idea who that is, but I’m sure I don’t want to look them up.
Luckily I got into Shane before S Curves vol 3 was out of print so i picked it up on Amazon a few years ago. Also got the first Cartoon Retro for $20 right around the same time. I haven’t seen it for less than $300 in a long time. The devil girl actually was made into a statue which I bought on Sideshow. Absolutely gorgeous and impossible to get now. So basically the lesson here is if Shane makes something buy it because it will sell out.
Gal with flapper haircut = silent star Louise Brooks. Show about a robot girl = it was a TV series, but live action, not animation, called Small Wonder. Besides the ones you spotted, I noticed some Zatanas, Josephine Baker, and Winona Ryder.
Thanks, Louise Brooks is who I was thinking of. Yeah I noticed some more too, but I stopped at one point because I felt it was probably getting tiresome. I think about the time I saw Portman from Leon I gave up. The cartoon I was thinking of was MY LIFE AS A TEENAGE ROBOT, although I have no idea if he actually worked on it. Really good catch on the Joesphine Baker, I feel dumb for missing that one. Thanks for watching.
I really don't understand when they flag me for language, because they don't really tell you what words they are flagging you for. In several of my videos you can hear me stumble as I try to figure out what words to use to not get flagged. Although the videos they removed were for images so I really just have to shrug my shoulders and move on. Thanks for watching.

The faces seem to have been heavily influenced by Japanese anime. The bodies have a more Western sexy-cartoon vibe though. Shane Glines's art is nice, but I personally prefer the old-school style of Doug Sneyd and Sokol.
@@elyzius7725 I like both of those artists too, and they are probably artists who influenced him. Shane’s style though is much more stripped down because of his animation background and because I’m a bit of an animation fiend I find that just as appealing. I do have a great Doug Sneyd book somewhere in my storage and I will do a video on that when I run across it. Thanks for watching.
maybe i didnt look hard enough but i didn't see anime influence, to me it seems warner bros, growing up watching WB cartoons, and cartoon network, feels, still American to me.
@@EMMmaximino yeah, it’s definitely WB, since of course he’s worked there for a long time, but there could be some there just because animation artists are the same as any artists and are aware of what everybody else is doing. I wouldn’t mistake it for anime though.
@@EMMmaximino On second look, I realize that the similarities to anime are kind of superficial after all -- big eyes, small mouth, and a tiny upturned nose. But then, those same features tend to appear time and time again in pretty cartoon ladies. The 1937 Snow White, Betty Boop, and the 1943 Red Hot Riding Hood kind of have the same qualities but will never be mistaken for Japanese anime. So I take back what I said about seeing anime influences in the faces of Shane's girls.
@@RealMuperSan it is print on demand (or at least something comparable) so the paper is not what I’d prefer, but I think the printing itself (at least on my copy) is very good, but not great. I think for $26 bucks it is a great deal.
