Are Your Migraines Worse in the Winter?
The holidays are a rough time of year for headaches and migraines. There are three reasons I see most commonly associated with an uptick of headaches around this time of year. While the reasons themselves may not be surprising to you, you'll be surprised with how you can successfully address them (especially #2... and yes, you CAN successfully abort a migraine caused by this without using your triptan!)

My name is Tanya Paynter and I’m an ex-migraine sufferer, a naturopathic doctor, and a migraine specialist.
Navigating the complexities of chronic migraines is overwhelming.
The reason you aren’t getting any relief with your current treatment is because no one is looking at YOU as an individual. You aren’t just a person with migraines. You are YOU with migraines, with a unique biochemistry and genetic profile that influences how symptoms show up in your body.
Conventional approaches don’t focus on the unique individual causes to migraines. In simple migraine cases, medication works well and that’s the end of it. But with chronic migraines that don’t respond well to medication, the real issues at play are the biochemical pathways involved -- and this needs to be addressed with a unique plan, not a general prescription.

I made a recent comment on the Connecting the Dot Podcast about people with histamine issues shouldn't be on methylB12. That stirred up a lot of questions about what form of B12 should be used if histamine is an issue, especially if you have an MTFR mutation. In this video, I'll explain what I meant by that statement a little more, and address some of the common questions I got about this topic...

    Pressure change I knew. Googling hypopressive breathing gives so many results I’d be keen to know exactly which technique you mean - from glance it looks like Uddiyana Bandha in Yoga? I didn’t know storms threw up mould, thanks. I wish I knew what you meant by serotonin pathways. So low pressure drops serotonin but how would we know what issue we have with serotonin? Interesting about triptans - but you don’t say why? What if melatonin gives you a headache?! And if SSRIs make you worse?! I think your work is fascinating but it throws up more questions than answers. Please write a book - I’d buy it!

    I’m so eager to talk about traumatic experiences. Feel them. Accept them and transform them. My issue is that every single time I speak of my trauma from memories. Within the following 3 days I will experience the migraine. My brothers and sisters are the same way. Why does this happen? How can I work through my traumas and stored emotions without being knocked down by a migraine? Ive tried EDMR however my therapist who practices does not recommend it for me because of housing instability, and the 24-48 hr reprocessing trigger time. Currently acupuncture has been my go to treatment. As well as energy empowerment. It helps well. But i dont ever want to have another migraine AGAIN. And i just don’t know how to come to terms with it not being realistic. (BTW no wheat, no gluten, no caffeine, no soy, no msg, no high estrogen, low dairy lifestyle)

      This results from the activation of the "fight or flight" response and the subsequent drop in catecholamine neurotransmitters that happens as you reset into "normal mode". You might talk to your doctor about ways to help support your dopamine/epinephrine/norepinephrine to help you process those emotions without such a dramatic migraine response.

    How likely is it that the culprit is our hygiene products? When I consider all the products I use and I don’t use that many, it seems a very daunting process to replace all our products. Not to mention cleaning products that contain chemicals and plastics. Are they some good websites that sell natural products that won’t break the bank?

    • @migrainemastery
      @migrainemastery 9 місяців тому

      Great question! The chemicals our body is exposed to every day has a HUGE impact on our hormones. Unfortunately that does include our hygiene products. The bleach and absorbent chemicals used are toxic to us and are known endocrine disrupters. It can be daunting but just replace things one at a time. As you run out of your toilet cleaner, replace it with a healthier option. As you run out of mascara, replace it with a mineral based, fragrance free option. I highly recommend ewg.org to help you figure out healthier options. It’s a great resource!

    • @migrainemastery
      @migrainemastery 10 місяців тому

      Do you have Mast Cell Activation Syndrome or just react to high histamine foods? Has anyone talked to you about what you can do to help lower histamine? Usually, we see high histamine issues as a result of 1) genetic variants that prevent you from breaking histamine down properly (which you can actually do something about with the proper support), 2) gut issues that need to be addressed (which is huge in migraines given the gut-brain connection), and/or 3) an underlying infection causing an imbalance in the immune system, which over-produces histamine as a result. There are a ton of things you can do to lower histamine naturally - talk to your doc about other options besides the medications.

    I had to rush to hospital yesterday for a horrible headache and my ear got so hot. The ER doctor ordered a CAT scan. I’ve never experienced anything like that before in my life. They found nothing and they said it’s a migraine. I am waiting for an appointment for an MRI at the local brain lab that my doctor ordered. I experienced childhood emotional neglect and chronic psychological abuse by a mentally ill and emotionally immature parent. My siblings verbally and emotionally abused me until adulthood. They got worse when my life became successful and I was more of myself. Since 1 year contact I have significantly accepted my family for who they are and I’m finally emotionally detaching from them. Life is a lot more manageable, calm, and to my liking since letting them go. I just find it so unfair that the abuse still lingers and haunts my body. I look forward to the day it all dissolves and dissipates. I deserve a great life. I’m a good person, generous, smart, kind, driven and creative. I am proud in having deep respect for integrity and authenticity in myself. I deserve a life worth living and to my definition.

    I had hemiplegic migraines and CPTSD for about 56 years before ever discovering the CPTSD side of the story. My life has been unbelievably difficult. The only things that have kept me from giving up altogether are my faith and my incredible wife. One of the most precious things God ever shared with me is that I cannot love my wife the way He wants me to love her if I'm living in self-pity. That insight has been such a big help and keeps me from falling into the pit self-pity tries to push me into. That and Romans 8:28. I now know there is a purpose for each of our lives if we'll let God show us that purpose.

    One question related to one of your other videos about melatonin. I can't locate it now. What does it mean if you get migraine after taking a melatonin supplement? I have noticed that, first am usually groggy then it progresses overtime to migraine or headaches. I don't take it often, usually only 1 mg on nights I can not fall asleep? Any suggestions or recommendations?

    • @migrainemastery
      @migrainemastery Рік тому

      I'd look closer at the role serotonin is playing in your migraines - specifically how your body is able to process it. If melatonin is triggering you, it sounds like perhaps you have a dysfunctional MAOA gene which may be causing issues in how your body can break down serotonin (and melatonin since they fall on the same pathway). Do triptans work for you when you have these kinds of migraines?

  • @jlmookafish8496

    This is absolutely spot on for me. I discovered through my own research ten years ago that histamine intolerance/overload was the reason for my many symptoms. Avoidance of high histamine foods is best (especially during allergy season) but I discovered DAO supplements really help when I have eaten too many of those high histamine foods. But I also wanted to address the fact that none of the doctors I had seen for my symptoms had ever heard of histamine intolerance. None. It is so validating and refreshing to find a doctor who is actually knowledgeable on the topic.

    Why haven't I seen your videos in the last 3 yrs? You nailed EXACTLY what I've been suffering from. I've always thought my migranes are hormone related. They are the WORST during my period, but they start the week before it, and last a week after. I have one good week. Good week meaning maaaybe 2-3 days im migrane free. I feel defeated. I have a daughter, high energy german shepard and wrk part time. I keep this job because its flexible but I could be earning 10x what I make but scared to get a 9 to 5 suffering. I've tried triptans with side effects, (this video makes sense why they don't work) currently on nurtec, botox and nerve block injections. I've only had luck with the occipital blocks and that neuro left that did them perfectly. 😢 the gyno ran a hormone panel (not full) and said I'm not pre-menopausal and no deficiencies. Im at a loss. The migrane specialist in my neurologist clinic are all temps so I've gone through 4, none have addressed my hormones when I've brought it up. The gyno said my migranes are caused from the normal hormone fluctuations that happen at my age (late 30's) and they don't know what causes some women to get them? But so happy I came across your channel. Going to check out your other videos right now. If you happen to see this comment, are you still in practice and where are you located? ❤

    Are there any electrolyte stick brands you recommend?

    It is not related to this video, but in one of them you have mentioned something about melatonin and what if this triggers migraine. I can't find it.

    Excellent. You covered everything. A lot I didn’t know about. Been hypo for 40 years. Love your videos.

    You didn’t mention RT3. I am checked for that around once a year.

      You are correct - there are other labs that can be run to figure out other issues and rT3 is a good one for understanding why your T4 is ok but T3 may be low. It isn't strictly necessary as an initial screening lab but is a good one to do if there's an issue with suboptimal T3.

    My thyroid levels were usually in optimal range, but recently although still in a range, my tsh is over 3. I was taking ashwagandha.

    Is there a better alternative for stress and migraines without potentially risking thyroid hormones and headaches? Ashwagandha seems to be the latest trend, but I have noticed increased headaches, also my thyroid was in perfect range. Now still in a range but on the higher end.

      Thyroid and the adrenals are very closely tied (usually in a good way - when you treat one, the other's functioning can improve too). Are you asking for alternatives to ashwagandha? There are a TON of adrenal supportive herbs. Rhodiola, ginseng, holy basil, licorice root, schisandra... so the good news is, you have lots of different ones to try if ashwagandha doesn't seem to be a good fit for you.

    Can ashwagandha impact thyroid? And separately can ashwagandha cause headaches?

    • @migrainemastery

      Yes and yes - some studies show that ashwagandha can help increase thyroid hormones (so helpful in hypothyroidism but potentially harmful in hyperthyroidism). And some people do find that ashwagandha gives them a headache. It's of the nightshade family which can be inflammatory for many people.

      Is there a better alternative for stress and migraines without potentially interfering in thyroid hormone and headaches? Thank you so much
