    I really thought that English people where driving to the left and that's it. But you have the boil kettle on the left. That is the same as the English. The wrong side. But, nice HERMS though.

      Raymond Moreno only if you batch sarge, but he fly sparges. One pump is used to transfer the hot water from the hot liquor tank to the mash tun through the Auto Sparge float valve, and the other pump transfers the sweet wort from the mash tun to the boil kettle.

    Very nice dude! Not a expert on brewing or anything. Just looking to start and it seems like you know what you are doing... i dig the setup and would like to get to know a bit more about the process.. you mentioned that you want to upgrade the temperature probes. So if you want to... I'm quite nifty with electronics and code... maybe I can write up something for you for an arduino or something and you help explain the process that you need... so we both will win then!. We can use nice PID loops for the temperature control and timers and stuff . Drop me a mail if you want discuss...

    Great setup Tony, looking at something similar, like the idea of running your wort into the kettle via the Whirlpool. Speaking of Whirlpool, i assume you whirlpool once cooled (immersion chiller has been removed) are you still running an immersion chiller or moved to counterflow or plate system?

      I tried to replicate this as close as possible. It took a while to figure out what I needed but I think I got pretty close. I bought the following: Items from ebay.com 9 - 1/2 NPT Full Port Ball Valve Female Threaded Vinyl Handle (ebay) 1 - False Bottom with 3/8 barb (ebay) 3 - 3" Weldless Thermometer for Home Brew Kettle 6" Probe (ebay) 1 - 3" Weldless Thermometer For Home Brew Kettle 2.5" Probe (ebay) 2 - MKII High Temp Magnetic Drive Pump (or chugger pump) (ebay) 3 - Bayou Classic sq14 (ebay) 1 - 1/2 OD Wort Chiller Conversion Kit Tubing to Garden Hose Fitting 50ft - 1/2 Copper Items from StainlessBrewing.com 2 - 1/2 Type A Camlock 9 - 1/2 Type F Camlock 1 - 1/2 Threaded T 1 - 1/2 Threaded 90 2 - 1/2 High Flow 90 1 - 1/2 x 5/8 SS KC Nipple 1 - 1/2 Hose Barb x 1/2 Female NPT threads 1 - 1/2 Weldless Whirlpool Kit 6 - 1/2 x 2 Bulkhead with NPT ends 2 - 1/2 Compression x 1/2 Male NPT 1 - 1/2 x 50' Herms 10" Coil with 2 bends 1/2 OD 304 HERMS 3ft - 3/8 ID x 1/2 OD Economy Silicone Tubing 25ft - 1/2 Premium Translucent Silicone Tubing Craigslist.com 3 - Keggles or Kettles I just ordered so I haven't put it all together but I think it will work good. I cheaped out on Sparge, he has a Blichman Auto Sparge, im going to rig up some tubing. I also cheaped out on the pickup tube for Boil Kettle. StainlessBrewing makes a nice 135 Degree tube bend (also needs a 1/2 Compression x 1/2 Female NPT) but I just did a Stainless elbow with a 1/2 nipple. Also, his Whirlpool arm looks AWESOME! I tried to find it but couldn't so I went with stainlessbrewing.com's whirlpool arm. It all gets expensive quickly but I moved from Oregon to Utah and i miss craft beer! If you can't buy it, brew it!

      I have since switched to bigger kettles and HellFire burners, but for that system they worked beautifully. There would have been no need for bigger burners. I started the boil kettle burner at about 3g runoff mark and was withing a few minutes of boil when done with sparge.

  • @Jeffrey_OMP
    @Jeffrey_OMP 7 років тому

    Another thought and minor change to your system that would further reduce oxygen exposure... Seal your keg, purge it with CO2 and then trickle the CO2 into the brew bucket while you gravity feed the beer into the keg. Eventually you'll need to vent the excess CO2 from the keg as the beer fills it and you'd have to run the CO2 into the bucket at least as fast as the beer is flowing out. Almost like a pressure transfer but gravity does the work and you just need the CO2 to blanket the empty space in the bucket. I guess you could hook up a fancy connection to the lid or you could just put a hose through the air lock hole.

    Why exactly are you circulating water through your HLT? Is that just to make sure that there is a uniform temperature throughout the tank? I would think that would ultimately lower the temp in the HLT.

    • @tdiplacito
      @tdiplacito 7 років тому

      To keep the HLT from having stratified temperatures. The HLT burner fires to keep the temp constant.

    • @coltonleeware95
      @coltonleeware95 7 років тому

      Would you say that is a "must have" for a system like this?

    • @tdiplacito
      @tdiplacito 7 років тому

      Yes, you are using the coils in the HLT to control mash temperature. If the top of the HLT is 152 and the bottom 162, it's going to be very hard (if not impossible) to control mash temp.

    Questions: 1. Why a stainless HERMS coil (vs Copper) and how did you drill the holes to mount? 2. SInce your Strike Water (HLT) tank contains the Stainless HERMS coil, have you ever had Wort leak into the HLT? 3. What / Where did you procure your whirlpool arm and what capacity (flow) is it? 4. Have you considered a 4th (MLT) tank for Wort recirculation in your HERMS coil rather than using HLT? Thanks! (good demo) GM

    As much money as you have in that setup you should do yourself a favor and add another pump, or build a manifold to avoid all the hose swapping and spilling. It only took me a few times getting burned before I made the change.
