This short video shows the setup required prior to remachining an AirChime K horn to spec. The machine used is my 1944 Sidney lathe. 4:28 I never heard a train horn like that before 🧐
At 4:35 you can see the back of the power chamber of the rearward facing bell. From the appearance, the horn is most likely a Prime PM920 which is a copy of the Leslie S3L, using the Prime version of the Leslie round-back SuperTyfon power chambers. These were more susceptible to fouling and misbehavior than the later Leslie RS design, and is probably responsible for the sound you hear. Despite how uncomfortable and unreliable the GE -7 series were those units had great low geared traction, for slow speeds that is, and sounded immensely hard at work when throttled out on a perfect day without problems. The C41-8W's and C44-9W's came very close to the looping "thumping" sound effects of the B30/C30-7's and B36/C36-7's having the identical "bathtub" exhaust manifolds. The GE 7FDL's sound great just like the EMD 645E3's from any GP40-2's & SD40-2's including alternative variations, much like the SD40T-2's. The 7FDL's are honestly just copied but upgraded variants of Cooper Bessemer's RVBL diesel engines which GE bought the design from and how their prime movers and mainline units came to exist. The good examples of that are the Cooper Bessemer FWL-6T's from the GE 70 Tonners and the U15B-U18B units which used Cooper Bessemer prime movers.
I always liked the sound of the older GEs, and they made for a good experience from the ground!. Thank you for the additional information on the diesel engine history as it adds a lot to the historical significance of the video. Much appreciated!

It's interesting to look back at old footage like this and see the difference as well as contrast when EMD units were still almost primarily everywhere in usage. Right before the market got dominated by GE C44-9W's, AC4400CW's, ES44AC's, C45ACCTE's, and the certain amount of ET44AC's that the railroads only ordered for tax write offs much like the unreliable SD70ACE-T4's from CAT/PRLX. Although EMD was recovering with the GP60's, GP60M's, SD60s, and SD60M's the beginning of the end for dominance was GE's -8 series, espiecally the B39-8's, B40-8's, B40-8W's ,C40-8's, C40-8W's, and C41-8W's, in terms of horsepower and traction. EMD units have always been more reliable and durable while GE units are stronger and seemingly ride easier. Respectfully depending on the railroad, there seemed to be alot of non stop variety and uniqueness back in those days regardless of manufacturers and rebuilds. That's what I miss most about my childhood. Almost everything nowadays is either vague or bland, most units just look the same. EMD really suffered because of the General Motors sell out and then their reputation was tarnished when Caterpillar became their parent company. At least there is alot of surviving GP38-2's, GP40-2's, and SD40-2's still out there. On top of that, it's good to know that certain older units have been acquired and are seeing prolonged usage with leasing programs and shortline railroads.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and for your thoughtful comment on my video. It seems that at the time we just took for granted the variety of power we saw on a daily basis, and it would always be that way. Well the sheer blandness of today's class 1 railroading speaks to the contrary.
@@b2major9th Unfortunately for me I didn't take things for granted because I was very young at the time but as I mentioned, I'm glad that I retain a photographic memory. Even if pictures aren't/weren't able to be taken I find acknowledgement that at the very least I got to see certain things and will remember them.
Every once in awhile during my off time I'll watch archived footage like this for some ideas or modeling purposes. Minus the Kodachrome livery, SD40R's, and SD45R's a good chunk of these types of units were still surviving in large numbers post merge when I was in my youth (SD40T-2's, SD45T-2R's, GP60's etc). By the time I figured out my photographic memory as a child many of the actual units I remember seeing were patched but still retained paint schemes. Little did I know that as a kid I witnessed the end of an era and how fortunate I was to at least see certain things since I didn't know anything about cameras. My Grandfather was fond of Southern Pacific and Cotton Belt. If World War ll didn't take place he would've immediately chosen the railroad as his career right after high school. He served as a Navy Seabee. Even after his long service in the military he got to prolong his passion and enthusiasm for railroading, even in retirement. After his passing in February of 2023, it's one of the very things as remnants that bring back golden memories. Thank you for posting these rare videos.

1930s-1960s Diesel horns in a nutshell
Although chime horns are my favorite railroad music, I do like the purity of these single chimes, where you can hear the fundamental and the way the horn shapes the overtone structure of the sound. Thank you for taking the time to watch and for your comment.

Those were better times. Our society has deteriorated greatly - people have no respect any more. Look at Los Angeles and the graffiti towers looming above the Crypto.com arena. And the government does nothing to clean it up, let alone stop more things from getting plastered with graffiti. Thank you for your comment and taking the time to watch.
Back in the early 1960's (when I was in High School) used to ride with the engine crews out of Indio. Usually to Yuma or El Centro. A couple of times on No. 3 & 4. I was told if anyone questioned, I was their nephew.
Those were great times, sadly not to be repeated, in general, for kids growing up today due to inward facing cameras and increased micromanagement. Thank you for your comment and for taking the time to watch!

Predecessor of the Wabco A2 I believe. The AA2 would have a long and a short bell

This sounds like a WABCo A horn
Yes, it uses exactly the same type of counterweighted diaphragm, and because the bell taper is similar to the later A series sounds the same. Thank you for your comment and for taking the time to watch!

They show up from time-to-time on eBay, however the prices have been ridiculous lately. You would be better off joining one of the Facebook groups (e. g. "train horn and whistles") and seeing if another collector has one to sell.

The crossing today is virtually the same as seen here. Only changes are the bells shown here, which were replaced with electronic ones in 2015. The A Frame “Wishbone” gate arms have also since been replaced. Recently, the closer signal’s far left light was hit by a truck or car and has been MIA. I have recorded this crossing on my channel

Oddly enough a GP40X was the second HO scale Locomotive I ever got. The flared radiators make them look so unique compared to all the other GPs. Great catch!

When these engines were new, a few engineers told me that they were told that these would replace the SD9's. SP bought them really heavy. The first order SD40's were 393,800 lbs. The first order of SD39's were 416,600 lbs and the second order, 5318-5325 were 409,900 lbs., crazy.

Isn't that the kind of horn they put on the Fairbanks Morse h24-66?
I don't have any specific examples of its use however it was commonly used on early first generation diesel switchers so it is quite plausible that it would have been used on the F-M H24-66. The H24-66 also commonly used Nathan chime horns, M3 and M5

Southern Pacific was a huge part of my childhood. My father worked for SP and one of his jobs was to run in front of the train opening 3 trestles .I was able to ride on the engines and a few caboose many times
I too grew up with the SP and nearly hired out when I was younger. Given the changes in the industry, I'm glad I didn't! Those kind of experiences will no longer be available to kids growing up due to a different "climate," inward-facing cameras and fewer giant corporate railroads. It's just not the same. Nonetheless, I am glad to have captured some of the history and to share it here.
My friend saw the plume in Superior, Arizona this evening. Superior is over an hour east of Phoenix. The plume in her picture looked exactly like the plume right at the end of your clip. That thing was truckin'! 👍

We didn't realize we were living in the "golden age" of railroading at the time. Society was better, people had more respect. The variety of power seen on a daily basis was immense. Looking back I wish I had recorded more footage.

Wow! Great footage for the time. I love the SP. The old EMD SD40-2. I grew up with them. I still think the low nose design was the best looking locomotive ever made. GP38’s were a great shorter version with only two-axle trucks. These things dominated the railroads from the 70’s through the early 90’s and this video brought back vivid memories from that time. Thank you. 😊

Thank you, thank you. This is the best audio sound I have heard here on UA-cam of my generation of railfanning. The big 20 cylinder EMD whining/howling, and staccato bark/razor sharp exhaust of the GE combined working together. This was the sound I grew up to in railfanning, late 70s to early, early 90s. One of the best eras of railroading ever, the other was the steam era. Today's boring/lifeless crap can't compare. It was more than sound, even like this video . . . it was feeling it too. This video captures that awesome sound. Thank you again for sharing.
