Cajon Summit July 8, 1990 - ATSF, UP, and SP Train Action

I was hesitant to publish this video as it is among the earliest train videos I ever shot on 8-mm video tape. It was actually an afterthought, as I had only up until then shot still pictures on my railfan trips. In spite of its shortcomings (lots of camera shake, choppy edits, etc), there is a lot to see here, classic trains from all three major Southern California railroads including an ATSF t...
Setup and Alignment of an AirChime K Horn for Machining on the Sidney Lathe
Переглядів 11511 місяців тому
This short video shows the setup required prior to remachining an AirChime K horn to spec. The machine used is my 1944 Sidney lathe. First the flange surface must be aligned perpendicular to the lathe axis. This is accomplished by means of a dead blow hammer (Lixie) and a dial indicator to read the wobble as the part is rotated. When that is achieved with minimal runout, the axis of rotation of...

Machining an AirChime K5LA to new specifications. This sequence shows the basic steps to restore proper dimensions . There is enough material to perform the process several times before the horn is beyond wear limits. If it is to be used in “collector service,” remachining will most likely never have to be done again because it will never accumulate enough hours of operation to wear it out agai...

The trailing unit is BNSF 188, GP60, formerly ATSF 402...

The crossing today is virtually the same as seen here. Only changes are the bells shown here, which were replaced with electronic ones in 2015. The A Frame “Wishbone” gate arms have also since been replaced. Recently, the closer signal’s far left light was hit by a truck or car and has been MIA. I have recorded this crossing on my channel

When these engines were new, a few engineers told me that they were told that these would replace the SD9's. SP bought them really heavy. The first order SD40's were 393,800 lbs. The first order of SD39's were 416,600 lbs and the second order, 5318-5325 were 409,900 lbs., crazy.

I don't have any specific examples of its use however it was commonly used on early first generation diesel switchers so it is quite plausible that it would have been used on the F-M H24-66. The H24-66 also commonly used Nathan chime horns, M3 and M5

Wow! Great footage for the time. I love the SP. The old EMD SD40-2. I grew up with them. I still think the low nose design was the best looking locomotive ever made. GP38’s were a great shorter version with only two-axle trucks. These things dominated the railroads from the 70’s through the early 90’s and this video brought back vivid memories from that time. Thank you. 😊

Thank you, thank you. This is the best audio sound I have heard here on UA-cam of my generation of railfanning. The big 20 cylinder EMD whining/howling, and staccato bark/razor sharp exhaust of the GE combined working together. This was the sound I grew up to in railfanning, late 70s to early, early 90s. One of the best eras of railroading ever, the other was the steam era. Today's boring/lifeless crap can't compare. It was more than sound, even like this video . . . it was feeling it too. This video captures that awesome sound. Thank you again for sharing.

Most of the time the crews didn't care - there was not really any social media, live streaming, or other avenues where the recording could have gotten back to management. I always asked permission to video tape and only recall one time where a crew member got upset that I was filming. Things have changed now and for the most part I don't think these experiences could be repeated. Thank you for your comment about your experiences, and for taking the time to watch my videos

I like the vintage video. I noticed that graphiti hadn't been invented yet since none of the cars had any, and that they regularly used four axle locomotives on long haul trains, which they don't do today. And that each of today's ES44AC loco's have twice the tractive effort of the SD40's and thus they can use 4+2 units instead of 6+6.
