The aphids bin through enough today😢❤
Oh goodness I stripped mine to early I think. Thank you so much for showing how it should be done. I was tempted to even remove some more today as my lower leaves are huge compared to the newer more compact centres. That’s why I though they should go
Thanks Isabel, I hope all goes well for you.
Thank you for making this great video!
Thank you Christine it’s appreciated.
Do cuttings have to come from tubers? Can they be taken from higher on the stems? Stem cuttings? Or side shoots with flower buds removed? Have you noticed a difference in tuber production from cuttings versus tubers? Thank you!

How to got Falcon 2
Last year, I left some of the dirt on my tuber clumps, wrapped them in plastic and stored in a cardboard box. Didn't split them at all until spring. They did great.
Excellent advice, the Rule Of Three is perfect. I started growing dahlias this year and you are the first person to describe such a means of growing dahlias. Thank you.
Absolutely love your channel.
I have a question and I got so many different answers. Does planting 1 tuber give you a plant with less flowers for the season than planting clump? My wife and I want a lot of flowers for next year because our little daughter wants to sell bouquets next to the road. But at the same time we want to grow our tuber numbers for more plants.
One of best videos, everyone show you how to divide tubers easy to do. Nobody what to do with clump of them. Thank you so much.
I see that you don't wash them, when you pull them out of the ground do you let them dry for a day or two before dividing? When do you clean the dirt from it because ours comes out from ground pretty dirty.
@@ronin6044 thanks for your question Ronin. Opinions vary on the “correct” time to wash the tubers. Soil is said to protect the surface of the tubers until they harden off (a few days), but many people wash them immediately so you can’t go far wrong. Good luck with yours.
I just pulled out 4 clumps from Dahlias we don't want for next season and gonna let them to dry for 2-3 days in the shed, clean them without using water, divide them and plastic wrap them. Great videos, thank you!
Great video, we are with our first year and thinking of a method to store them. The only problem for us is recognizing tubers with eyes while dividing them. We will probably go for this method, just not sure how big of a plant those little tubers can become?
@@ronin6044 thanks Ronin. You will get more confident spotting eyes as time goes on.
How many cuttings can you take off of one clump of pot tubers?
@@carlyb5296 thanks for your question Carly. Between 5 and 12 is normal for pot tubers. I hope your season is going well.
Is there an antimicrobial that might work? Since it is a bacterial infection
Hi thanks for your question. I suppose that is theoretically possible although antibacterials are not used in the standard management approach.
This is by far the best and easiest thing for a solo gardener. I don't need the plastic because it's too hot in Texas but I will definitely make 2 types: 1) Shade and 1) Insect! My beds are much smaller than yours so I think I can do this. Thank you so much for sharing. (Oh, I arrived here from your Short!) 😃
So did you start with seed starting mix which does not have as much nutrient as regular compost……then after 56 days is that the same soil or have you changed it?
Hi thanks for your question. Yes once rooted and filling the pot the cutting is transferred to a larger pot with more regular nutrient- rich compost to grow on before planting out. Thanks for making that point.
Good Job👍😊
Thank you!
New gardener, here. I tried both planting tubers and planting a small dahlia plant. Both were decimated by slugs!
It’s sure been an awful year for slugs. You can only ever do your best and still the slugs might win the day.
@@MoorfieldFarmFlowers Boo! Ah, well. I shall try again! I HAVE had luck with slug collars on other plants so I'll try with my next dahlias. Thanks for replying.
How many times can you use
Hi thanks for your question. We are into the third year of this tunnel. We repaired some splits and holes with tape, but its still going strong.
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers thank you for your reply, how about the pvc pipe
Durable and still going strong too! Be careful to bend it slowly , if it kinks it must be replaced.

Thanks Wayne for your kind comment and good luck with your new season down under!
60 sec?...you forgot to mention you video was on super speed!!
Yes you’re correct :)
Good morning MFF, am I correct in assuming for the rule of 3 to operate well that there is a single tuber in each pot?
Hi Freddy, no, the rule applies to all. It does feel wasteful when a larger tuber clump is planted. I am suggesting the optimum stems for the soil to support is 3. So I would say consider always dividing your tubers to at least 4 or 5 tubers if you want to optimise your stock.
I have just watched some of your videos and they are very well done and very informative! Just a question on the depth of the planted tuber. I am in Canada and like to plant my tubers 6 inches under the ground level, even if they have already sprouted. I plant sprout and all, usually burying the stem and it comes up just fine. This is the first time I have seen tubers planted with the tops at ground level. I had always thought that the new tubers are created under ground at the top of the original tuber. So in your case, where do the new tubers form?
Hi Kathy, thanks for your question. Yes you are right my tubers are planted quite high, they are routinely mulched so end up deeper. New tubers develop at or below the level of the originals in my experience so by the time they are dug out they are plenty deep enough. Hope this answers your question and I hope your growing season is going well.
I have a dark foliages type dahlia. My green ones root no problem but these cuttings are just sitting there doing nothing, including not dying. They’re in the open porch and get sun and are watered regularly. What else can I do? They’re almost two months old lol
Yes some cuttings are just stubborn by nature. In this circumstance I would get one out and examine the cut surface. If there are no roots at all after weeks then they are unlikely to develop. You can try hormone rooting compound on the new cuttings next time around. Also I usually protect the cutting from drying out with a plastic bag until rooted.
@@MoorfieldFarmFlowers Thanks 🙂
Hello. It’s time to do some “brutal” cutting. Thanks to your tutelage I am enjoying my dahlia growing. My question is - can you speak to conditioning? Some put their dahlia stems in very hot water and leave to cool overnight. Do you do anything besides cool clean water? TY
Hi Leslie, searing is a technique we use for difficult flowers such as sunflower, but we don’t sear our Dahlias. If they are wilting we might add citric acid to the water to increase the rate of water uptake. Hope this helps.
How did you measure the plastic so it fit over the hoops so perfectly?
Hi thanks for your words question. I think we estimated and then added a margin. The plastic is then wrapped around the wood and clamped to take up the slack. Hope this helps.
i dont have the best luck with trying to root cuttings, i managed to root a few from side shoots. So if you wanted to plant the pot tuber after getting some cutting, can you plant out in the garden?
Hi Thanks for your question, Yes you can certainly plant the tuber out after taking some cuttings, although the tuber will become depleted as more cuttings are taken, and they are usually smaller than a standard tuber clump so there is less "headroom" to start with. I hope your season is going well.
@@MoorfieldFarmFlowers thanks
Thanks for you incredible informative videos. Most grateful.👍
Thanks for taking taking the time to comment, its appreciated.
How do you keep the plastic cover from the wind blowing it off? I dont see it fastened to anything.
Hi, yes sorry I didn't touch on this here. It usually holds itself together without fixing if the wood is heavy enough, but if wind gets very high we secure the ends of the plastic cover with heavy stones, The wood could be tethered to metal ground pegs set at right angles to the pull.
@@MoorfieldFarmFlowers okay thank you!
Can you replant dahlias in the same spot?
Hi thanks for your question. We replant in the same beds each year, although we rotate the varieties in any one spot. In instances of disease such as Virus or Gall, it is normal practice to avoid using the same spot, or attempt to replace the soil. Hope you have a great season.
Those 310s made my hand sore today, which never happens (I use my #2 all day a lot of days). Don't use WD-40 for preserving tools. 3-in-1 is good & cheap. Good saw & bit cleaner at Menards cleans the sap off super well. Or Goop.
Thanks for your comments Pamela.
Excellent video. Very helpful for beginners like me. Many thanks.
Thank you very much for your kind comment.
My first time having Dahlias in pots and they have finished producing flowers for this year leaving the seed pod. What do I do now with them and will they grow back next year?
Hi thanks for your question. Once each flower begins to fade you should remove it by cutting the stem below it. This will allow more flowers to come, and they should keep flowering right up to the first frost. If you let a seed pod form the plant will "switch off" and stop producing flowers. Cut away your seed pods now, and after a week or so your dahlias will start to produce flowers again. Good luck!
I pinched 5 of my dahlias and they all wilted and died within a week. The ones I haven't are growing beautifully. Makes no sense.
Hi, this is very odd indeed. Was there perhaps another common factor? For example they were all exposed to a high temperature near the time? Very odd.
My grandmother used to cut the "easy" tubers off and leave the "hard" to get to tubers all together in a clump, the clumps went into her "seed garden" and the single tubers went to "production" or for sale.
Hi Stephen, sounds like a great idea!
This should work fine with shade cloth too right? Great video tho definitely trying this out Also would flipping the conduit when you’re towards the end bring back your leverage? I’m no physics major but seems like it could work
Hi thanks for your comment. Yes I agree, it would support shade cloth too. The conduit lasts well held by canes and we don’t routinely do anything else.
That was SUCH a helpful video, thank you! I couldn’t understand why other people were picking their sweet pea flowers in U.K. so early, whilst my plants were only just starting to climb! I shall follow your advice and use the root trainers which I grow my runners in and also start them over the Winter! Many thanks!
Thank you Sara for your kind comment. Yes you can start all your hardy annuals in this way in autumn for early flowering in Spring. Good luck with your sweet peas!
I just planted a tuber in a container about 1 week ago, I’m glad I ran across your video!
Hi thanks! Hope it works well for you.
I just was able to punch my dahlia.. thanks 😊
I have a silly question...is the pot tuber formed initially by taking a cutting, rooting it in a 4 inch pot and then growing that cutting through the season?
Hi Angela, thanks for your question. Yes! Exactly that. The pot is buried in and dug up at the end of the season, ready for storage. B
Thank you very much dude!! I have watched countless videos on pinching dahlias but your demonstration of it step by step on multiple plants gave me not only the knowledge but the courage to actually do it to my plants that I was afraid to cut because of there healthiness! Continued success and regards!
Thank you for your kind words, I am glad you found it useful. Hope your season goes well!
Good info, are you using ap potting soil as the compost,or seed starting mix?
Hi thanks for your question. We are mixing peat free with sifted topsoil here. Seed starting compost has very little fertiliser so not suitable, potting compost is more like it, but it’s composition can be so variable .
Thank you. 😊
And thank you!
Great informative video thank you!

What's the pipe size??
Hi, it's 12.5mm overflow pipe.
What is the pipe material?
@@MoorfieldFarmFlowerswould appreciate your reply.
Ugh, the wood edges is so smart. I've hesitated to do these because they seem like a pain in the ass to deal with in hot months when you need to take them down.
Hi Mintgreen, yes it’s just a few minutes job to roll it up and carry it away, although ours are so long that it takes 2 people to carry.
I'm glad I've found your videos, (another new subscriber) the information will give me the confidence to try with tubers next time. This year I've raised ten Bishop's Children from seed, I'm looking forward to see what colours I'm going to get! Unfortunately I can't find any information about dahlias raised by seed. I have already pinched out the main stem and the side shoots are just forming their third set of leaves. My concern is that the main stems are not as robust as yours grown from tubers. I don't know if it's because of the type or that they are young plants. When would you recommend I stop pinching out?
Hi, I hope your Bishops Children do well. I must say I have no experience of growing from seed, but the principles of pinching out are the same as tuber grown plants. So long as they have enough time and conditions are good, the stems will bulk up nicely and you will have good sized plants. I would not automatically pinch out every secondary shoot as the end result will be a plant with maybe too many side shoots, and smaller flowers as a result. You will get a sense of where to pinch out, and where to let the shoot grow and produce a flower. Good luck with your adventure.
Do you have any advice on how to grow dahlias in pots/containers as I only have a courtyard type garden? What type of pots are best. Your advice would be appreciated. 😊
Hi thanks for your question. I can't offer advice based on experience as I don't grow them in pots. But I can offer some general advice on potential pitfalls. Firstly choose a variety that is small enough to grow in pots - I suggest nothing over 2ft high and only one plant per pot. Use as large a pot as possible - porous such as clay is best. Use a mineral based compost such as John Innes No 2, standard peat free composts will quickly dry out as dahlias are very thirsty. Lastly, in a pot you will need to add feed regularly as the small volume of compost will rapidly deplete of nutrients. A healthy dahlia in a pot is a thing of beauty - good luck!
@@MoorfieldFarmFlowers Thank you for your advice. I actually did not know that different composts dried differently.
