My 1981 Yamaha XV920R Virago needed a new tank to fit the cafe racer style. After trying to get my hands on a KZ650SR tank it just didn't work out. I stumbled upon the Royal Enfield Continental 650 tank and thought to give it a shot. Showed exactly how to mount the tank using the stock rubber flanges. Thanks for video. Did the same recently to my ‘23 WRX. Found mildly used RS 1.5 in ‘22 rear housing so easy install. Used Cusco Neo LSD oil and it’s silent.
Would you say this setup can affect reliability? Its my daily.. but im kinda regretting getting the WRX over the STi because I want that LOUD rumble. I could do UEL headers but.. from what ive seen the power loss is insane and it just ends up making further problems in the future and I dont wanna have to drop 5k on a new engine.
UEL is a dumb decision for the WRX because of the twin scroll turbo. Equal length headers and twinscroll is better in every way, except the sound. I eventually really liked the sound but to each their own. Reliability comes down entirely to the tune. Spend the money on a good tune and you won’t have any issues. If you cheap out, you’ll pay for it in the end.
@@dwelker284Hey thanks for the response considering the video is so old! But yeah, i’ve decided to not go with UEL headers as i don’t wanna tune the hell out of this car JUST for sound. I’d rather spend that money on a good exhaust setup + other reliability mods. I kinda like the FA20 sound once it’s been properly adjusted, stock is definitely too quiet lol
Good video thanks
The real proof is that you always see wrx owners making videos on if they regret not getting the sti, or how the wrx is better than the sti for their uses. You never see the reverse; sti owners making videos if they regret not getting a wrx.
That’s mostly because people who buy an STi feel superior because of it and wouldn’t ever admit it. It is better in a lot of ways and was always the case in the past. Since 2015 they are quite different cars so the comparison can be made.
Driveability was less than desirable with my lightweight flywheel until I put on a cobb downpipe and got a good etune. That made a world of a difference.
Good work! Sure doesn’t look like my 1981 XV920RH. I changed the goofy rear fender back in the Eighties and still has the Hannigan Super Sport full fairing I installed after touring through the Famous Roger’s Pass in the Canadian Rockies where I had the “pleasure” of riding through a Snow storm in July. Later rode from Vancouver, Washington, Oregon into California down the Coast highway in the rain and the fairing kept me somewhat comfortable….
Thanks! It certainly looks different than how they started. Sounds like some great memories!
I still have mine!
Technically, not a true Virago...
Bike literally says “Virago” on the side…..
Yes, your conversion is looking Great! Street bars will work well… I’ve had my 1981 XV920RH from New…it’s been all over North America and still strong!!
Going to be ready for this upcoming ridinf season?
Videos should come back soon. Won’t be ready until probably 2025 but should make steady progress throughout 2024.
Great information! Thanks for sharing!
I'd get some sort of rubber cover that wheel bearing I kept mine on still on the original chain around 80000miles and looks brand new
We never really get to hear what it sounds like in the real world when you open it up. You rev it up while parked or sitting at a stoplight, but you were stuck in traffic the whole time, never even really got on it. Too bad
Were you using the Cusco LSD 80W-140 oil when you found you needed to add friction modifier, or was it a different oil?
75w-90 and added friction modifier
Thanks! @@dwelker284
update ?
Not much to update on. Design is almost locked in. Other than that, not much has happened.
Это не Virago 🤔
I've been planing this build, more café oriented, for 20+ years. At this point, it is probably not going to happen. So..... when is the next video?
Maybe soon but not likely. Progress has been slow as I’m getting married. Also still haven’t received my big bore kit that I ordered 2 years ago. The vendor completely ghosted me.
@@dwelker284 Congrats. Is the big-bore a must? The art of the smart compromise is a strength, and might prove useful in both ventures :)
after putting in a lightweight flywheel, did you need a tune?
Sometimes the flywheel can cause issues with stalling. In that case a tune would be recommended
Can your friend make me the bracket? I'll buy.
Or let me know how to make it myself
We fabricated it using the car itself, no measurements. So we would need another car to make it work. I don’t have the car any more so I can’t use it. Any fabricator should be able to make something for you.
@@dwelker284 Ok gotcha, I appreciate you and the fast response. I swear It feels like I never get youtube comment notis I always manually check.
I hate them maybe for racing but I don't race so
Looks like rear LSD only. thats actually the better way to go with an fa20 wrx. it makes the car behave very rear biased.
Correct, rear only. Definitely behaved more like a RWD car in a lot of scenarios.
@@dwelker284 sounds awesome. makes me wanna do it to mine lol
I have a LWF on my e46 bmw M3 and its great but it sounds like a diesel ...
I really like your choice of bars over the cafe style clip ons. Also have never been a fan of the short stubby seat. I like the one you are using much better. Please post the next installment.
BEST TIP I CAN GIVE A SUBARU DRIVER. ON A STOCK FLYWHEEL YOU DONT NEED THROTTLE AS MUCH. ON A LW FLYWHEEL YOU BETTER REV OR YOULL HEAR AND FEEL CHATTER.
Does it make noise during cold start?
So, you prefer higher maintenance costs, shorter maintenance intervals, and all the mess that comes with an exposed chain. Got it. How do you feel about outhouses, vs. that boring, old indoor plumbing thing?
I guess all the manufacturers should consult you about why they all went to an exposed chain. If you saw how nasty the oil was in there you’d realize that it’s more of mess than getting an o-ring exposed chain.
MOST OF THOSE CLUTCHS GOING BAD IS FROM NOT ADJUSTING THE PEDAL/MASTER CYLINDER ROD
I have the exact same shock and same adapter from De Stijl. Mine fitted perfectly.
Any chance you could tell how thick/ deep it is? Or the measurements in general
@@icarus0032 well no sorry, it's been mounted on the bike some years ago, so the project being finished the adapter is now pretty inaccessible... at least for me to be able to measure anything without having to disassemble everything in the way :s But yeah, as I remember, apart from the one original R6 bushing I had to press out (where you have to swap in the 2 new aluminium ones), all the rest was "plug and play" without having to "sand down or press in" anything else. And I have to say... this DeStijl adapter is a real thing of beauty. Real slick and professional grade. So worth the 200$.
great video:) i’ll be upgrading my flywheel
hello, can you please give the site where you bought the traverse rod for p6?
Cognito moto
I had one of these when I first did my 6 speed swap 7 yrs ago. It got damaged because it was set up incorrectly. Managed to get another cusco carrier brand new for a steal recently so I'll be back in the LSD life again soon :)
Do you upgrade fuel pump or fuel injector too? Will it work with just flex fuel kit?
I did not run flex fuel so I’m not sure. The flex fuel kit should tell you if it’s required or not. Cobb had a kit awhile ago but not sure if they still do or not.
how u doing?, you ccreated superb vlog,🤝
thankful i bought my STI. why the f*** would anyone choose downgraded interior, NO DCCD, glass transmission over nicer interior/DCCD/6 speed? for a little extra gas mileage? smh. to each their own i suppose
Older generations I would agree with you. But with the 15+ WRX it’s completely different. Different engine and transmission. My car also made 350/350 and was just as quick as most STI’s. Definitely not a glass transmission either. My car had leather interior as well so not a downgrade.
Do a reveiw now for 2022
I no longer have the car. Haven’t had it for 4 years or so.
Looking at one for my car and I sincerely think you sold on one.
My 04 Baja turbo hated the LW flywheel. Trashed daily driving, caused occasional stalling during stops, and tended to chatter from a stop. That 'jutter' was putting unacceptable strain on the rest of the drivetrain. Just not worth it.
Awesome Bike! I need some help man, I have the rear tire off but I can't separate the chain cover parts (the 4 Allen bolts holding the two halves together). Did you have to cut the chain to get the whole hub off, then separate??
I can’t remember the exact steps but I did have to cut the chain to get everything out. If you ditch all of the chain lube and covers you’ll have to get an o ring chain anyway. Cut away!
Are you selling the same style exhaust by any chance?
I believe I could if you’re interested. The welder should be able to use my bike as a template and make another. Let me know if you want one.
Great build so far! Bike looks awesome.
You should have just bought a piece of Aluminum on amazon for 25$ and then cut and shave it down to any measurements you want. The exact measurment of the adapter are online, then you can modify from there.
I could have but by the time I did all of that it would have ended up the same cost in the end. If you include my time. Plus you would also have to made the spacers that fit into the shock. That’s not as easy as the bracket. That would really be a lathe job. Yes it could be done cheaper but it’s just easier to buy the components. I’m only trying to machine the parts that I can’t buy. I don’t want to rip off or copy parts that someone else has already made. I’ll make my own custom components that are necessary and that I can sell.
wouldn't happen to have a link to the measurements ?
Can you please tell me how i can find the measurements??
does the effect of the friction modifier wear off? also how did you know how much to put in?
As with any other oil it does degrade over time. There is some ratio I did see somewhere but I think I was using 4oz of friction modifier to the 1 quart or whatever it took to fill.
I’ve been on the hunt for a kz tank lol 😂
They’re so hard to find. I found someone who had one but it turned out to be in much worse condition than I wanted to deal with. They do look so good though.
Nice design! I just picked up a 920 and have been practicing welding I’m going to attempt welding up some mandrel bends for my subframe soon! I’ll be following your build! Good luck 👍🏻
Any idea how much it will cost to get those subframe pieces made? I have the exact same bike, it’s even chain drive like yours
My friend has a machine shop and I will do the CNC programming so the cost to me will be minimal. Material isn’t super cheap but that’s just part of it. The rear piece most likely won’t be machined due to cost but I still haven’t decided on that. If you wanted to buy a set that certainly can be done. Shoot me a message on Instagram if you have one.
Vinyl wrap for sure
Bought this exact same bike to day! Chain drive as well haha
How did you modified the engine to put the chain?
This model comes with a chain. It’s pretty rare.
well, it sounds like the diff has a lb-ft setting too low. That can be adjusted. Did you notice any changes in how the car brakes around a bend under light, medium, hard braking? I've seen Pros describe the 1.5 versus a 2. either one causes overs steer. Sounds like that's what you experienced. My concern is safety on the road as a daily. Any thoughts? Oh. Does it affect the ABS/stability control? DId you need to deactivate the stability control? Does it cause the ABS to activate abnormally at all?
I always thought that the noise was due to preload being set incorrectly. I bought it as a complete unit and installed into the car so it could be a number of issues related to the actual LSD installation into the housing with pinion and gear. Safety isn’t much of a concern. I did actually end up breaking some pieces of it and it still drove quite a ways before I took it out. I did not have to disable ABS or stability control. I never noticed anything strange with it. It would use some torque vectoring by braking the inside wheel but if on throttle the wheels were locked. So it just wouldn’t do much. I always felt that it gave me more traction in so many places which eliminated some ABS and traction control moments.
@@dwelker284 ya but, I'm thinking more about losing control in the rain/snow d/t stability not being set up for the traction.
I like that u didn't use clip ons
