    Very Helpful! Thank you. I love the bobby pin trick. A bowline knot would be better than a square knot, less likely to come untied. Also, some people are having trouble with the knots being too big to fit back in the pole, so the cord can be "whipped" to hold in place, or just melted together. Lots of videos on how to whip a cord. I learned it at Girl Scout camp 45 years ago! Also , hemostats are the best home tool.

    I learned about Lite Outdoors from a previous video of yours. I have them saved on Amazon to buy later hoping that they would someday go on sale. I think they got more expensive. I've been using the mini-groundhogs for a while now and really like them. I've only had one instance where a night of insane wind and constant rain resulted in one pulling free. I think the curved design helps prevent bending and breaking. Prior to these I'd been using cheap Y stakes from Walmart which wound up bent and broken all to Hell. The Lite Outdoors set seems like a good deal though, so thanks for the heads up.

    Probably more breakage reported on the MSRs because they’ve been around for over a decade and come stock on many tents. It’s the most popular lightweight stake out there, as a result. I switched to the minis as soon as they were available and have had no issues relying on it as my main stake in a wider variety of conditions. Pretty much everything but snow and sand. I use the minis for 1-3 person tents. Anything larger and I’d probably want something with more holding power like the full-sized stake offers.

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback 5 днів тому

      I considered the time on market for the Groundhogs, and there are almost certainly more of them in use in the world. They're definitely solid stakes, and I'm glad you've had good experiences with the Minis!

      It keeps the bugs away really well. It’s all I use these days. I also use Murphy’s candles to keep them away at camp (not backpacking of course). Once they get going, they make about 90% of the mosquitoes go away, so that’s always helpful, too! When I’m backpacking, if they’re bad (like in the Sierra), I’ll add a head net. I also permethrin my clothing, including my sun gloves and socks.

    This was really good. I was an EMT in the early 80's, and our kits are nearly identical. Such great advice - Carry what you know how to use - so true. I might add for most people - learn to use more!. I have added a Sam Splint ( I have had a lot of ortho accidents) and I use the small eyewash kits (with the eyecup) in lieu of carrying saline. The unopened kit is just sterile saline, If I ever use it, I will replace it. My small Swiss knife blade is altered to look and work like a #11 blade ( I have removed a lot of big splinters). Tourniquets are the most scary piece of gear. If one is needed, it has to be used correctly. If used in the backcountry, you are most likely condemning the extremity. A terrible choice. Funny, the EMT training was not as useful as the NOLS training. Mostly I learned how not to screw up, and how to package for transport. Good stuff, but not "backcountry". Oh, and how to talk to a doctor over a radio... Thank Goodness they invented MICNs. BTW, I am going to be adding that bag. It looks just right.

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback 5 днів тому

      Thank you for your comment! I keep debating the SAM Splint (I have two in the car), because they're so versatile and of course, it's easy to have an ortho accident in the backcountry. I REALLY want to do the NOLS WFR/HCP training one day when time and budget allow. I have heard nothing but good things, and when people ask about WFA, I always suggest NOLS (or bare minimum, a hands-on course over an online course any day). And I love the bag! I'm really happy with it!

    Another great video, thanks! I need to get an "obvious" pouch for my first aid supplies, they're just in a Ziploc. I like the tip on carrying the leukotape, I'll try that.

    So glad you did this video. Say, Switchback... if I carry a roll of Coban and a roll of gauze, is there anything I can't fashion out of those that a triangular bandage is better for? I'll add one if so. Thanks.

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback 10 днів тому

      Good question! Those would be too stretchy to properly support an arm for a sling. Ideally, a sling will immobilize the arm, including wrist, elbow and shoulder, and be held closely to the body. Reducing stretch will help. Luckily, triangular bandages aren't too heavy! But they're much larger than a bandana, which wouldn't be suitable for the job, either.

    Hi, thank you so much for these videos. I recently had a tick encounter at a public park near a pond; it was enough for me to second-guess locations I thought were safe otherwise, so I have a few questions. Where should I be on the lookout for ticks? Likewise, what is considered safe (like playgrounds, mulch areas, botanical gardens, that sort of thing) Is Repel good against ticks as well as mosquitos? And I've heard that permethrin could possibly be a carcinogen. It's safe, right?

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback 13 днів тому

      Hello! Great questions! Ticks can be anywhere, but tall grasses and anywhere where you're brushing against vegetation is higher risk. Being clear of those, such as the middle of a trail, or the areas you mentioned, are lower risk, but a tick check should always be performed after going outside. Ticks also prefer wetter climates, so you're more likely to encounter one in wetlands than in arid environments. I usually see them on grasses after it rains. It's almost become a game for me to look for them! A tick needs to be attached (not just on you, but biting you) for 24+ hours in order to transmit anything, so diligent checks will help keep you safe. Insect repellents that work against mosquitoes work against ticks as well. I have had really good luck using that Repel OLE with both ticks and mosquitoes in areas where both have been thick. Permethrin is banned in some countries for the potential health risks. However, my research showed minimal risks with it. Here's one example: health.maryland.gov/phpa/IDEHASharedDocuments/permethrin.pdf That said, I don't know that ANYTHING is 100% safe, but I do know that tick-borne and mosquito-borne illnesses can be life altering, and I personally am willing to take the risk of using permethrin to protect myself and my family until evidence to suggest it is more dangerous than exposure to these insects is. I do wear a mask and gloves when I treat my clothing just to help reduce my own risk of potential exposure. Be aware that WET permethrin poses neurotoxic risks to cats, so make sure if you opt to try it out, you don't have a cat around at least until everything is dry. You might find this helpful, too! ua-cam.com/video/e3Ogpah9QlA/v-deo.htmlsi=MB27gp6peUXbf4Yx Also, permethrin IS toxic to fish and other water life, so it's a good idea to skip it if you have a lot of water crossings or plan to swim in the clothing you'll be treating. It also kills other insects, including bees, so be aware of where you're spraying or treating your clothing. I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂

    I would like to sincerely thank you for the video and the effort you put into it. It is currently the only video that shows how to efficiently get the air out of the sleeping pad and, even more importantly for me, how to properly fold it at the end. Thank you very much for that! Warm regards from Germany!

    I've been telling folks about this video and this question kept popping up. Is sun screen still recommended while wearing Sun Shirts? Which waist pack are ya wearing? P.S. I love to hear and see you two giggling! It makes me smile everytime 🥾🥾🥾😺❤💛💚💙💜

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback 13 днів тому

      No need for sunscreen under a sun shirt, which is part of the beauty of them! Of course, exposed areas still need it. The waist pack is the Osprey Ultralight Stuff waist pack alnk.to/5Q4QlVK . I LOVE it. I really like having a small pocket inside, another outside, and it's large enough for my phone AND selfie stick. I sometimes put it across my backpack straps like a chest pack! I laugh every time I watch that part, the two of us just absolutely dying, belly laughing uncontrollably! I had to leave that in! 😂 I still crack up thinking about Emma riding down the rapids like she did!

    Not a budget option, but I went through a number of options for sun hoodies and settled on the Vorrmi River Run Hoodie. I’ll be on the GR 11 next month and in lowlands it can easily get up to the 90-100’s in mid July. It provides good coverage and is super light weight, but it does seem prone to snags and wear, but I figure better than heat stoke
