#HowToBloke Cooling fan solution | fix for hot/overheating motorcycle voltage regulator | rectifier.
👉 I paid considerable attention to securing the cooling fan to the voltage regulator-rectifier, ensuring that the fan and its fixings would not come loose, which could create a hazard of falling debris or an electrical failure. This includes making sure that no part of that assembly, including the screw fixings, would work loose through vibration and cause the rear tire to puncture, or cause any other sundry damage.
👀 Also, it is prudent to check that the battery has a good earth to the bike chassis and is not defective in some way.
👌 That ignition-on ticking noise was the fuel pump - the fan runs silently!

Summary of the video's audio in text format below:
Hello folks, @HowToBloke back again with another bike video. I hope to do more of these. This is a follow-on from a video I did about a year ago, and it's quite important.
What it concerns is this: the early Yamaha YZF-R1s and early superbikes. I'll tell you why in a moment. Every one of these vehicles has something called a voltage regulator rectifier. It rectifies the alternating current into direct current and then regulates how much voltage goes into the bike, lights, ignition, and whatnot.
The problem with this device is that it's kind of old-tech. It works perfectly fine, but it gets very hot, hence the heat sink. The alternator works, and whatever voltage isn't used by the bike's system is converted into heat and released through this heat sink.
Importantly, what happens, especially on this bike, is that it gets hot. So hot that if you touched it, you'd have to take your finger away immediately. It's supposed to get a bit hot because it's designed that way, but it can shorten its life if it stays hot all the time. On the Yamaha, there's a plug here that melts, so it's crucial to keep it cool.
I've overcome this on my Yamaha R1 by fitting a fan. Here it is-a small computer-type fan. It's 10 mm in width, small enough to sit on the heat sink. I can't show you how I installed it because I did it the other day and can't take it apart right now, but here's what I did.
This part is the actual electronics of the fan, so you want to avoid drilling or damaging it. With this fan, I put screws through all four points to secure it.
To avoid the fan running all the time, I took the red lead and connected it under the fuse for the ignition. This way, the fan turns on with the ignition and off when the ignition is off, saving battery power. The black wire is just an earth wire connected here.
For the screws, I used plasterboard screws, which are self-tapping. I drilled [small pilot holes to guide the screws and create an interference fit] holes away from the central part of the heat sink and secured the fan with screws and super glue to keep them in place.
Now, the heat sink stays hyper-cool. It doesn't even get warm. Other bikes, like the Hayabusa, may have similar issues with overheating. To avoid frequent replacements and potential breakdowns, consider adding a fan or a bigger heat sink, like an aluminum plate, to dissipate the heat.
Alternatively, you can get a modern voltage regulator rectifier with a MOSFET chipset, which produces much less heat but is more expensive-four to five times the price of the old one. I had some of the older ones lying around, so I used them.
Before I go, let me show you how it works. I'll turn on the ignition. The bike isn't switched on at the moment, but when I turn the ignition on, you can see the fan turning. Turn the ignition off, and the fan stops. Simple and effective.
This is a doable DIY project if you're handy with a spanner. It works brilliantly. For older superbikes, you might also want to install a voltmeter to monitor the system's voltage. If something goes wrong, like the alternator packing up, you'll know because the voltage will drop.
I hope you enjoyed this video and found it useful. I've got more quick tips and DIY projects coming up. Until next time! 👍

    • @HowToBloke
      @HowToBloke 14 годин тому

      How can you tell that the rear tyre sensors have stopped working? The Dacia Jogger doesn't have any tyre pressure sensors. The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) works via the ABS computer which detects a loss of tyre pressure by virtue of a deflated tyre having a smaller rolling circumference whereby the wheel will turn slightly faster than a wheel with a fully-inflated tyre; and the ABS alerts the driver via a dashboard warning.

      This video may help ua-cam.com/video/QohpYvLmKVA/v-deo.html If not, the rain water is entering the cabin via blocked rain guttering pipes. Open the bonnet and look at the left and right corners of the windscreen gutter (where the windscreen meets the chassis) and if it's full of crud, there's your probable cause. It could be more than that, but start there. Thanks for watching #HowToBloke 👍

      No. Mount and install the roof box on the fixed roof rails as a (probably painful) first-time job. Then, afterwards, remove the roof rails together with the box attached (because everything is now already aligned - screw holes etc.). Thereafter, Bob's your Uncle! Thanks for watching #HowToBloke 👍

      My car roof cargo box is made by G3 in Italy but there is no mention of a speed limit on the sticker inside the box, only a max. weight restriction of 75kg. On their website (frequently asked questions section) however, they suggest respecting the 130 km/h (80 mph) speed limit which is the Italian motorway maximum. I like to add exterior cargo straps for extra peace of mind and I also check the anchor points and security of the box whenever stopping for fuel or a coffee break. Thanks for watching #HowToBloke 👍

    That’s great. Shame I have an earlier model where it hocks on a plastic clip not through metal. Then the back seems stuck in the upright and can’t find what’s bent or stuck to make that fold. But your tip at least did half job. 🎉

    • @HowToBloke
      @HowToBloke 29 днів тому

      Maybe there's a pull tag somewhere around the edge of the seat so you can fold the seat down. On a Scenic III to get the seats to fold down, you pull on that same strap that was originally pulled to unlock the seat from the flat position. If both the rearmost seats are stuck in the upright position then I would doubt something is broken/bent. Maybe the open/close mechanism needs some lube somewhere (because I had to do that on mine). Thanks for watching #HowToBloke 👍

      Would it be a good idea to take your Dacia vehicle to an authorised Dacia dealer and ask them? Perhaps the vehicle needs the latest software update if you've not had that done recently? I don't think there's any way I can check this on a Vektra kettle because it is just one of those electronic buttons you depress once, it doesn't stay down. I guess the only thing I can check is the base for continuity and the fuse to rule them out, but I suspect it is the button/electronics that has stopped working. I'll have to see if my kettle is still in warranty but knowing my usual luck it will probably be just outside the warranty period. It has been a great kettle for me up until now and saved me loads of money on electricity. I don't like the fact that a modern kettle only lasts 20 months before failing and we're expected to buy a new one, especially if it's not a cheap kettle but a slightly more expensive one. Maybe I'm just old fashioned though and expect things to last.

    Bulbs like those used to cost - coppers. Now? Nearly a £tenner for two. I always changed them in pairs as they age similarly, one goes chances are its mate doesn’t have long to go. Means you do the job once instead of twice. Plus any others with darkened glass as shown here. Light units used to be EASILY accessed but now it’s not obvious forcing many back to the dealer… and we all know what those sharks charge per hour. and - headlight units are now peculiar to each model, no generics. Meaning they can charge any crazy price they like. And that’s what they do, for simple plastic mouldings that might cost at a guess £2-5 tops a shot to make, probably much less.

    • @HowToBloke
      @HowToBloke Місяць тому

      These days, it's not the price of the car so much, the real cost is in keeping the vehicle road-worthy, serviced, compliant, and insured. In my early days of ownership (since 1976) cars could be fixed by the owner if they were handy with a spanner. And, new parts were cheap or readily available from a scrappy. Change a clutch on a Ford - no problem. Service the transmission - no problem. These days, engine compartments are so cramped, one can hardly get one's hand in there let alone identify the component that needs attention and spanner it! I could rattle on but let's leave it there. I do hope a manufacturer will one day promote a new vehicle boasting that it can be home-maintained by an enthusiast. I would definitely buy that car! Just had ours done same thing, New cluch and flywheel, with bearing then it happened again a couple of weeks later so we replaced the master cylinder fingers crossed it's all good should last a while now, the car had only done 59000 miles cost all in around £1150 so not to bad for today's garage prices, I found a couple of guys from Lithuania working down the road from me and they were fantastic and very quick turn around. Fantastic cars the grand scenic yes they have there problems but for a family vehicle it's brilliant. Great videos by the way 👍

    Do the top spinners go bad also

    • @HowToBloke
      @HowToBloke 2 місяці тому

      Maybe. But normally it's the rubber seal fitted onto the top-tray inlet spigot which engages with its hole when pressed against the inside of the dishwasher. Over the years, I've seen that there seal missing or split which means little or no water pressure is getting into the top spinner and it doesn't spin fast enough, or, at all! I've had my Jogger for a year now and I love it. It's great for carrying the dogs and love the fact that although an estate it's high off the ground like an SUV.

      And if your dog loves mud and water (or both!) Dacia/Renault sell several accessories to help your Jogger stay clean. Thanks for watching #HowToBloke 👍

    So you prebake bread then spread mixture and rebake ?

    • @HowToBloke
      @HowToBloke 3 місяці тому

      If you have a grill, grill one side. Once toasted, turn the slice over and the put the mixture on the un-toasted side of the slice and then grill it to cook it. If you don't have a grill, just an oven, put the bread on a metal tray and put the mixture on top of the slice. The heat of the oven will make the underside of the bread touching the metal tray turn into toast, just like it had been grilled. 👍

    I have it for 2 months now and I love it, it surprised me how nicely it drives. Mine is the LPG variant which has even less torque :) I needed a family car, and with a government program (7-seaters for families) that subsidized about 30% of the cost of the car, this choice was a no-brainer. Oh, and you are right - my biggest gripe is the handbrake (and the hill assist system) as well. My wife was unable to get it going on a slope (where she works, she got used to proper hill assist in a citroen and an opel), she was gradually rolling back until it became too close to a stone wall... Her solution was to not park there anymore :)

      Thanks for watching #HowToBloke I have found a manual workaround for the electric handbrake. If you've not seen it already, its here ua-cam.com/users/shorts67rd8L7hGRM My wife doesn't like the electro-handbrake either! I did notice that some Joggers DO have a manual handbrake. But, fitted with their automatic gearbox, a Dacia Jogger is unlikely to roll forwards or backwards unexpectedly because of the residual momentum in the torque convertor at idle engine speed after a reverse or forward gear has been selected. For example; If it's in, "D" with the engine running, it won't roll backwards easily.

    great vid, did you have to replace the wiring loom as a hole? how to did you replace the wires? did you have to follow it all the way down to where ever it comes out, also any soldering?

    • @HowToBloke
      @HowToBloke 4 місяці тому

      The wire was made of solid iron not strands and had snapped inside its own insulation. I didn't need to test the whole loom. I fixed the wire with a simple plastic electric block connector (looks a bit like a lego brick) and insulating tape but perhaps I should have soldered it. That same wire broke again, months later, in much the same place. Thanks for watching #HowToBloke 👍
