I had one for a bit, on a special rod my uncle had made for me after my father's passing. The rod is beautiful Epic glass blank 7' 3wt, the grip has a cut out with some of fathers ashes in it epoxied over, its incredible. The reel seat is a piece of stunning hickory that was turned down from a log harvested off of my father's land. The perfect creek rod for some of the smaller streams in Missouri my father and I loved fishing together. The reel is beautiful the highest quality piece of fishing gear I have ever had. Sadly, it has been missing for about 8 months. I'm heartbroken its gone and I haven't fished that rod since I lost the reel it doesn't feel complete, like something is missing and that breaks my heart to think about missing my dad in the same way. I have never lost a rod or reel or any piece of significant fishing gear in my life I can't believe of all things it was this reel. I have searched in every bag, pocket, vehicle space countless times. I hope to have one again one day. I can't recommend this reel enough beautiful piece of work. Cheers, Jeff

Cool test! I have the same OPST lazer 50 lb, and Rio Slickshooter 35lb for a two-handed surf rod with a shooting head system. I know it's a different application than steelhead spey casting, but the Rio straightens out much much better (as your video showed) and the OPST is unusable for me as I can't get the memory out even after trying multiple times to stretch it out. And this is at temps around 50-65 deg F.

had the same problem, even when stretching it out it had the same coiling problem, one day I took them out and stretched it out on my fence, like doing a pulley system between the bars of the fence and leaving it very tight (I mean it very tight if the running line is 44lbs try to do 40lbs of pressure) and I left it there for 1 or 2 hours, never had any other problem with it, I thought I wasted my money but with some luck I managed to fix it

I knew a fly fishing gear reseller (he's now retired), and he once told me the Sovereign series was the best reel Hardy ever made. And, this dude saw PLENTY of gear, both vintage and modern. Classic Hardy sound, modern drag system - pretty cool. My knock on these Sovereign reels is sizing; as were many reels back in those days, the reel sizing (to me) was understated. I have on of these Sovereigns in a 7/8, and it really is sized for a 5/6. The 'small' handle on the reel is pretty consistent with what Hardy used on reels in the late 80's/early 90's. My Sage 506 (made by Hardy) has a handle very similarly sized to the Sovereigns. The handles on the Lightweight series reels were/are also very small. By the way, not dissing your Perfect and Bougle, but check out Thompson reels (vintage) - a Hardy Perfect on steroids. It has the gear/pawl system like the Perfect, but it also has an adjustable drum drag, as well. Very similar appearance to the Perfect.

I bought the XL same as you. I actually use a 8wt line for saltwater and I got about 125 yards of backing.
