- The Hardy Sovereign is a famous 90's era Hardy and features an early disc drag as Hardy branched out from 100 years of click pawl reels! The Sovereign features gold anodizing, smooth drag, crisp sound, easy drag conversion and the leather sheepskin pouch! Some claim this is the best Hardy reel ever made, what's your take?

I knew a fly fishing gear reseller (he's now retired), and he once told me the Sovereign series was the best reel Hardy ever made. And, this dude saw PLENTY of gear, both vintage and modern. Classic Hardy sound, modern drag system - pretty cool.
My knock on these Sovereign reels is sizing; as were many reels back in those days, the reel sizing (to me) was understated. I have on of these Sovereigns in a 7/8, and it really is sized for a 5/6.
The 'small' handle on the reel is pretty consistent with what Hardy used on reels in the late 80's/early 90's. My Sage 506 (made by Hardy) has a handle very similarly sized to the Sovereigns. The handles on the Lightweight series reels were/are also very small.
By the way, not dissing your Perfect and Bougle, but check out Thompson reels (vintage) - a Hardy Perfect on steroids. It has the gear/pawl system like the Perfect, but it also has an adjustable drum drag, as well. Very similar appearance to the Perfect.
I have a Sovereign 2000 that I bought in London from Hardy's. Caught some big bonefish with it last week.
I just picked up an 11/12 Salmon with an extra spool brand new. Numbered 084. I know it’s an early model so I hope it holds up as I plan to put her to use on my spey rods.
Oh and great video!! Thank you
Beautiful reel. Thanks for sharing.
You bet! Thanks for watching!
Regarding the cracks: Is it cast or machined?
These we're CNC machined! But I believe only the early runs with low serial numbers were badly affected by cracking
@@ccflyca thats correct, the low serial numbers were prone to cracks. i have one in salmon size no.838 brand new, never even had a line on it, but im tempted. Any idea what they are worth?
@@billytheghillie Yes indeed with the early builds of this reel! The poor alloy mix was resolved in later batches. I believe in the $250-300 USD range is typical, however a mint one like yours may fetch more than this!
I can’t access your website 😢
No way thats not the best reel of hardy ...look like à shep look of à marquis ...lol for me the perfect ..is by far the best reel of hardy and the 1912 click version Will be the best they evermade
Always a topic of debate but I agree with you! The 1905 check is my choice!
