How To Stop Worrying & Learn to Love Set-Adjacent JumpStart!
Sure "Real" Magic: The Gathering's JumpStart Boosters are great... but what about the ill received and soon to be rebooted "Set-Adjacent" kind? You might be writing a comment already.

I recorded this on the USB microphone that came with PS3 Rock Band and directly into Audacity and I think it was a cleaner recording. I also used the "compressor" on this one so I could "amplify" without the peaks getting cut off. I feel like it sounds better all around but please let me know in the comments if you agree or have any tips.
I am still getting he hang of the animation features in OpenShot... and may have both over and under delivered... will keep working on the "balance". Let me know what you think of this style of presentation.

SinbadEV Plays Minecraft: Episode Three? Going Up Tests
I didn't know of these jump start boosters! Your idea to have it follow the standard format seems good
@@theclovercross Neat! It's really a fun way to play so happy to spread the word. I suppose that's another drawback of just how much is getting released every year... some things are bound to slip through the radar for some folks. Thanks for watching!
I could be wrong but from what I've seen Jumpstart Foundations is much more of a Jumpstart 3 than a set-adjacent Jumpstart. 46 themes is the same number as the actual Jumpstart sets and cards in it aren't necessarily standard legal. In my understanding it is Foundation-adjacent in the same way that original Jumpstart was m21-adjacent.
@@nickschmucker8836 It's about time for a JumpStart 3 I suppose. Given the details we have so far, it would have to have more than just Foundations cards to be able to have 46 themes... but it would be a real mixed message if it had more than just standard legal cards given how they are positioning and marketing. I believe there's a bunch more Foundations details coming from a panel at MagiCon Vegas... literally this afternoon, eh?
Looks like you were entirely right... it almost seems better than previous "real" jumpstarts even!
They're a fresh & alternative take on the tainted semi-cycle, even if we only get another 5, I'd be happy.
Much better. Good job.
This is a re-upload of my last video ( ua-cam.com/video/8YC1Ua8oY-o/v-deo.html ) which had audio problems. I took the opportunity to try a different strategy with the thumbnail.
Thank you.
Comment, Like, Subscribe
I would imagine they didn't emphasize Ravnica in the names because they want to be able to reprint them in non-Ravnica sets without it being weird
Yeah... going to be hard to reprint the triomes without returning to Iokoria or New Capenna... that said... would have been neat if they had been two basic land types and gate eh?
what is this guy even yapping about? this is nothing
Welcome to my channel! It sounds like you won't like the rest of my videos either. Sorry!
Thanks, but I think I'll stick to guildgates. Way simpler to remember
...but what if you are running Farseek?
I can usually be provoked into remembering duals, shocks, and fetch names, what's one more landcycle to store in my brain- oh, my brain just overwrote "how to keep drool in my mouth," anyone got a napkin?
Just use a guild gate.
"Join Gruul, we have napkin gates for your Druul"
Thanks this is handy
Best tutorial for beginners. I check out the Professor (helpful, but not the best). There was another guy who did a hour plus video that was best tutorial for a newb like me. But your videos are very good. You should do your own “how to play”. Make it long and thorough!
I had a idea to do a "how to learn to play Magic: The Gathering" video where I go over using MTGArena to learn the basics... Like, starting with learning all of the mechanics relevant to a specific set, then standard, then learning how to parse unfamiliar mechanics as you encounter them... I can see it. Got some other ideas I want to get to first but I'll keep thinking about it.
Back off the mic or get a pop filter, your audio is full of plosives.
Sure was! By episode 5 I'm like 90% plosive free and have almost figured out how to talk *near* the mic instead of into it!
@@WilliamBenjaminJohnDavis Ah, glad you got it sorted! It's one of those issues that really can't be fixed in editing. Sorry if my comment was a little on the curt side, I was grumpy and as a former audio engineer I can be less than polite about these things. Great content, cheers man.
🔴Corrections, 🟡Omissions, and 🟢Addendums: 🔴Sam Middleton points out that I am incorrect when I say that a triggered ability with an intervening if clause triggers but isn't put on the stack if the clause isn't "true" when the triggering event occurs. Rather, if the intervening if clause if "false" when the triggering event occurs, it the triggered ability just doesn't trigger at all. While I don't know of any case where this would matter for Simic Ascendency, there are ways to interact with triggered abilities being triggered so this is important for understanding triggered abilities with an intervening if clauses. 🔴Tim Chirananthavat points out that you don't "target" permanents with counters, you "choose" them. As it turns out Proliferate, a keyword action, is featured in the next Standard Set so WotC has a proper explainer video for it: ua-cam.com/video/xFFTPFPxy9Y/v-deo.html 🟡This one I noticed. I went through all the trouble of finding two examples of cases where you could cause an opponent to "control" a "You lose the game" effect but totally forgot about cards that just cause an opponent or player to lose the game like Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God, Vraska the Unseen, or Strixhaven Stadium. 🟢calemr points out that one of the reasons "moving counters to a creature" counts as "putting counters on that creature" is that what you are actually doing, mechanically, is removing counters from a permanent and putting the same number and type on another permanent. Check the first Ruling on "The Ozolith" in Gatherer for a fun "cards don't always do what they seem to say they do" example. gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=the%20ozolit
10:47 Proliferate doesn't target :P
Of course it doesn't. /facepalm Thanks for your attention!
7:33 This is incorrect. The effects on a card, even within a single paragraph, happens from left to right. Paragraphs aren't relevant. The exceptions are the self-replacement effects. 608.2c. The controller of the spell or ability follows its instructions in the order written. However, replacement effects may modify these actions. In some cases, later text on the card may modify the meaning of earlier text (for example, "Destroy target creature. It can't be regenerated" or "Counter target spell. If that spell is countered this way, put it on top of its owner's library instead of into its owner's graveyard.") Don't just apply effects step by step without thinking in these cases--read the whole text and apply the rules of English to the text. 614.15. Some replacement effects are not continuous effects. Rather, they are an effect of a resolving spell or ability that replace part or all of that spell or ability's own effect(s). Such effects are called self-replacement effects. The text creating a self-replacement effect is usually part of the ability whose effect is being replaced, but the text can be a separate ability, particularly when preceded by an ability word. When applying replacement effects to an event, self-replacement effects are applied before other replacement effects. 11:24 Again, technically, each step in casting a spell is separate, and must be done in a specific order. However, you can't "interrupt" casting of a spell because nobody gets priority in between. Rule 601.2 has an extremely list of steps in casting a spell. (For extra fun: you can cast a spell while casting a different spell. To do so, have a Chromatic Sphere and an active Archmage Ascension. Cast some random spell, like Opt. To get the mana for Opt, you crack Chromatic Sphere, which has a mana ability that draws a card. Archmage Ascension replaces that draw with a library search. While searching, you cast Panglacial Wurm (which is a weird card). Once you've finished casting Panglacial Wurm (including paying for it), you can get back to finishing paying for your Opt.)
I think I got all that... I'm a little foggy on the self-replacement part works, rules wise. If I have already created the 1 token already, I can't create 2 instead... I guess you check the entire ability for self-replacement effects (and then replacement effects) and apply them before resolving the non-replacement effects?
@@WilliamBenjaminJohnDavis yeah
@@WilliamBenjaminJohnDavis Actually, I think of it as the replacement effect overwriting what the card is doing.
"Moving counters" is something that's Very obvious as to what it does, while being a completely incorrect definition. You don't move them, you just make new ones. Which can lead to all kinds of interactions that someone might not expect, for example, Skullbriar dying while you control an Ozolith doesn't take any counters off Skullbriar, it just adds them to the Ozolith.
There's so many "Rulings" in gatherer for the Ozolith that I would contend they worded the ability wrong... should say something more like "Whenever a creature you control leaves the battlefield, if it had counters on it, put the same number and type of each of those counters on The Ozolith." ... I suspect they wanted to "simplify" the wording and ended up over correcting into ambiguity.
Minor correction: A triggered ability with an intervening if clause does not trigger if the clause is not true when it would trigger, as well as fizzling if the clause is false on resolution.
Awe shoot. Should have said something like "if the triggering event occurs". Thanks!
Is this a wall bro tf
Ceiling actually.
First strike is not a keyword it is an ability word. keywords are in italic like landfall and don't have a set effect
You got that backwards. First Strike does have a set effect, is not printed in italics, and is in section 702: Keyword Abilities. Landfall, on the other hand, is indeed an Ability Word and appears in italics because it doesn't have a set effect.
I realized... way too long after uploading... that the first Slide and Thumbnail used a different series title ( I had been workshopping a few and ended up changing the script one more time after "finishing" the slide deck )... I also decided I would take this as an opportunity to update the look and feel of the thumbnail. Let me know which you have any feedback... I posted the original on Twitter: twitter.com/sinbadev/status/1614324773131108352
Corrections and Omissions: As pointed out by TobyBW... Planeswalker's with 0 loyalty are sent from the battlefield to the graveyard as a "state-based action". Similar to when you sacrifice a permanent or if a creature reaches zero toughness. That said... I'm not sure if there are any effects/rules that CARE about permanents being "destroyed" specifically... mostly they care about them being sent from the battlefield to the graveyard etc... anybody know of any examples? I realized... way too long after uploading... that the first Slide used a different series title ( I had been workshopping a few and ended up changing the script one more time after "finishing" the slide deck ).
Anything that gives a permanent indestructible (e.g. Tamiyo's Safekeeping) cannot save a planeswalker from dying due to combat damage or other effects that cause it to have 0 loyalty counters, but can save a creature from being destroyed due to lethal or deathtouch damage. Another interesting case (that came up in a game that I was playing the other day) was that creatures with 0 or less toughness go to the graveyard but are not destroyed (which meant I couldn't save my 1/1 Shrines from a Massacre Wurm trigger using Rootborn Defenses).
Related interesting keywords from un-sets are last strike and triple strike, which given the context of first strike, it it easy to deduce that these cards create a last combat damage step.
I was *this* close to putting Extremely Slow Zombie at the end of the video with a joke about "don't get me started on *last* combat damage step"...
It's amazing just how long winded the rules become when you're being so definitive and exact, when to a layman, it's just "First strike creatures do damage first in combat." But they need Pages of text to clarify all the ways this can interact with triggers, how it alters phases, how it can alter when people can activate abilities or cast spells... It's like the difference between "Press A to jump" and the tons of lines of code required to make that happen.
When I make these things it's always a bit of a struggle to know where to stop... because even though it's quite complicated in theory... it often just kinda "makes sense" outside of interactions with other effects... so does it make sense to explain the interaction between First Strike and Double Strike? I think so... but what about First Strike and Death Strike? What about trample? What about cases where you are ordering blockers and one of them has First Strike?
0:44 “creatures… are destroyed along with any planeswalkers with 0 loyalty counters.” While the creatures are destroyed by the state-based action in 704.5g, planeswalkers are not destroyed, and are simply put into thier owner’s graveyard, 704.5i.
That is a Weird rule I have never heard of in many years of playing... But it makes sense, Lore wise: Jace doesn't Die if he runs out of loyalty, he just sees this horde of big creatures coming towards him and goes "Yeah, screw this." and planeswalks away. It's why it's "Loyalty", it's their willingness to get smacked around to help you. Legendary creatures don't have any of this gameplay/story integration though, so I guess Niv-Mizzet really does die over, and over, and over again, serving thousands of people all around the world...
@@calemr, technically, it isn't Niv-Mizzet that dies over and over, because technically you don't summon Niv-Mizzet over and over. Instead, you create a replica of Niv-Mizzet that you draw out of the Blind Eternities using mana. It's a being made from pure mana instead of a flesh-and-blood creature.
Good catch... it's always the things I just assume I know and don't bother looking up, eh?
What's weird is that you CAN destroy a planeswalker with an effect (See: "Murderous Rider" an others)... which is I think why I didn't bother to check.
Yeah... I've always been a little fuzzy on that one as far as the fiction goes... that said, ever since I read "Magic: The Gathering Arena" ( a novel published in 1995, not the video game ) I've imagined myself as a wizard with a bag of random doodads to use as focusses for my spells including little pouches of dirt from lands I've formed a bond with.
This is high quality content! Informative, well constructed, clear visuals. You clearly know what you're doing.
I am going to accept this compliment with the following caveat: either I know what I'm doing or I am so good at faking it that the end result is indistinguishable! Thank you!
So like... You're absolutely positive that I can sac blocked creatures? Citation, pretty please? Also, if you're taking questions from the class. My boardstate: Pestilence, Sphere of Grace, Stuffy Doll+Soul Armor. Other Guy: idk, let's say Hexproof. I think this is the coolest thing I've found on my own. It's definitely my favorite. Very on-flavor of Orzhov, "Do as I say, not as I do".
509.4, 117.1b The active (attacking) player receives priority after blockers are assigned to attackers but before damage is assigned to creatures. So when I say "would die" I mean, say, a 3/1 blocked by a 4/4, not a creature that has lethal damage assigned to it. I'll have to look at your board state puzzle later. Thanks for watching and commenting though!
Could you do an episode on split/mdfc/meld cards? Hanweir the writhing township is a good one
If this series goes on long enough I'm sure they will come up. Hanweir Garrison / Hanweir Battlements / Hanweir, the Writhing Township is a good meld example... in that its abilities are simple enough that a video about the card can focus on the Meld part.
Just binged all the episodes so far, very fun stuff! Just nice and pleasant to watch. Thanks for making my afternoon!
Thanks so much! Being binge worthy is high praise... though with the rate at which I release them you will probably not have the opportunity to do so again for some time.
I don't know why but I really like this series
That's fine. Life is full of mystery and I will happily take you unaccountable accolades along with the more explicable ones! Sometimes I'm not even sure why anyone likes this series or why I enjoy making it!
This series is super cool and well made. I hope you keep making these.
Thanks! I hope I keep making them too!
Corrections & Omissions As pointed out by TobyBW: ➖ 4:55 I talk about activating an ability with a "tap" cost in response to an effect that would tap or remove a permanent from the battlefield and say that the effect of the ability would "go on the stack" before the other effect was resolved. While this is true for many effects, the slide at the time shows a Forest and a Relic of Legends which both have "Mana abilities" which don't interact with the stack. "Mana abilities", some "special actions" and some "state-based actions" happen "right away" from the perspective of the game state without going on to the stack... though there's still some ordering considerations based on active players and priority. That said, to be clear, using a mana ability (or any other "right away" effect) on a permanent in response to an effect on the stack that is targeting that permanent still works. ➖ 5:50 I say that "'Sacrificing' means to destroy a permanent you control." but in the strictest terms it is not. Sacrifice: To move a permanent you control to its owner’s graveyard. See rule 701.17, “Sacrifice.” Dies: A creature or planeswalker “dies” if it is put into a graveyard from the battlefield. See rule 700.4. Sacrificing a permanent means to move a permanent you control directly from the battlefield to its owner’s graveyard. A sacrificed creature (or planeswalker) still counts as having “died” in this situation because it was put into a graveyard from the battlefield but it does not count as being destroyed (which is important for a number of reasons, the examples mentioned were that indestructible permanents cannot be destroyed but they can be sacrificed, and that sacrificed permanents cannot be regenerated). ➖Tim Chirananthavat points out a number of issues with the way I describe how effects are resolved. In brief: the effects of a spell or ability are resolved from top to bottom, left to right and are discrete game actions. While you cannot ( generally ) interrupt the resolution, this is because no player is likely to receive priority until the end of resolution and not because the game actions happen simultaneously. Or at least I think so... check the original comment for additional detail and an example where it would matter.
Nice video! I saw the Forest episode a few months ago and thought it was a really good resource for new and old MTG players. Glad you're still going at it.
Well... there was a gap... I got really into Marvel Snap for a bit there.
5:50 "'Sacrificing' means to destroy a permanent you control." While sacrificing and destroying have similar effects, sacrificing is not destroying. For example, you can (and can be forced to) sacrifice a permanent you control with indestructible. And a permanent that is sacrificed cannot be regenerated, as regenerating creates a replacement effect that replaces the next time it would be destroyed that turn.
Oh... I get it... to sacrifice a permanent, its controller moves it from the battlefield directly to its owner’s graveyard and a creature (or planeswalker) “dies” if it is put into a graveyard from the battlefield. So YES sacrificing makes the creature count as "dying" but it is a discrete game effect from destroy. Nifty. I'll try to clarify this the next time it comes up.
4:55 "you're ability will go onto the stack first..." While it is true that you can respond to the removal or tapping of a card by activating a tap ability on it, in the case of Forest and Relic of Legends, the abilities in question are mana abilities, and therefore, will not go onto the stack. The effect of the ability, adding mana, *will* occur before the card is removed or tapped, but not using the stack.
Interesting... Mana abilities are so weird.
Hmmmmmmmmmm
🤔
I love this series!
So do I!
Played cat oven in standard until they banned cat and the deck then became a pioneer deck. Its rakdos cat oven with mayhem devil and threaten effects like claim the firstborn. Why just kill their thing when you can take it, smack them with it, then kill it for value such as more food tokens or card draw
Mayhem Devil double dipping by triggering off the oven sacrifice and food sacrifice... such happy memories. 😭
Happy new year!
Happy New Year!
If there's a card I'd like to see covered, it's probably one of my favourite cards of all time (from an abstract point of view, it kinda derails gameplay) - Eye of the Storm. So much fun follows from the fact that the copies are cast. Now I recognize that it may not be the best card to cover its mechanics, that is spell copying, unusual zone changes, and the storm counter, so I guess these are the mechanics I would put out there as the more serious suggestion. Maybe a more modern card, one that is allowed to copy permanent spells? And these are potentially weird things, so they might belong in episode 6 or even 7. If you want more comments, an easy way is to sprinkle a few mistakes into your video ;)
Eye of the Storm could be fun... but, like you said, probably a bit down the line... that said, who knows... sometimes I'm inspired. Also, I don't need to intentionally make "mistakes"... real mistakes happen naturally often enough that I don't have too. This game is really complicated sometimes ya know?
Well, you just got another subscriber. Good stuff! Looking forward to more! It may be too early in the series, but an explanation of each keyword could be a good video.
Awesome! There are so many keywords... could be a fun video though... blast through them with just 1 slide and very brief descriptions of each... thanks for the suggestion! Once I get through all the card types and key concepts I'll think about it.
Errors, Corrections, Glaring Omissions: As pointed out by Jade Cat, Players can only cast sorcery spells when the stack is empty.
Yay, another one! It is an amazing achievement that Magic is a game that you can have an intuitive understanding of, while also having these complex and robust rules working in the background. Seeing all that exposed while going through an example card is quite fun. 3:28 Sorceries also require the stack to be empty.
Great catch! Thanks for watching!. It's sometimes hard to believe that with so many cards legal in some formats, the game still works at all...
Yeah! More! I will watch this first thing in the morning.
Hope you enjoy!
