Again another quick version of a favorite song re-learning on a theater organ for the first time at the DTOS Senate Theater console. One thing that needs to be noted if your keeping track is the organ is in a bad way right now durring filming. Regurlar maintiance was stopped several months before this video was recorded and MOST of the organ is not fuctioning properly and the more i played it t...

This just generates wind?
that is correct. it supplies the wind for the pipes and console.
Thanks for showing the WurliTzer. I worked on it's cousin that is now at the El Capitan in Hollywood.
So glad this magnificent instrument and this beautiful theatre have been saved!
WOW what a treat! This must make me sound old, but they just don't make 'em like that anymore. Every detail in this place is a work of art.
Wow that great old gal has still got all of her swagger after all these years. The Mighty Wurlitzer was in fine form when this was recorded . That early Stereophonic theater organ sound still holds up VERY well today. 👍👍 Its too bad so many of them are gone!
OMG! The stings and vox! They are still delicious! I played this great instrument in the sixties when it was almost derelict but with John Muri at my side, it was GREAT!
Unfortunately... The organ restoration has come to a halt... The foundation chamber mostly disconnected.
T Casterson I believe the Fox Theatre owner passed away and he was very interested in keeping the organ in a playable state. I think now his kids own it and are not interested in keeping it in playable condition.
@@danielmurphy4415 That breaks my heart!!! It is a National Treasure. Why would it be neglected by anyone!
@@albertpeckham8708 You are right, times are changing I believe, many younger generations of folk are just not as interested in keeping these instruments in shape due to them favoring other forms of entertainment and culture. It's the sad reality that most likely within the next 50-100 years more and more of these theatre organs that have been brought back alive by the generous work of people years prior will fall back into disrepair or even be scrapped entirely. It's just getting harder(and more expensive) to maintain these instruments with the patrons greying each year. People just don't see the need to keep them if it's going to cost them a lot of money and time to make sure they are in playable condition
@@danielmurphy4415 Sadly, everything just boils down to money and profitability these days. Instruments like these, in their original homes, are a rare internationally important part of our cultural heritage.
Kudos my friend! Having had the pleasure of playing this instrument at least 50 years ago, it is a joy to hear it again! The vastness of the place is sometime overwhelming! You have given me a real joy to be able, at 80 to hear this great instrument again. PS: my mentor was John Muri.
Rip Chris Cornell
William Fox tried to cancel the organ for the SF Fox but he had paid for it and Wurlitzer had built it so Farney Wurlitzer refused the cancellation.
its almost impossible to hear the solo side when hes on the main side of the pipe chambers
Since this is mechanical there is absolutely no crosstalk to speak of. Makes for some AWSOME Stereo separation lol lol..
I really like the kinuras!
very good ---
As I recall, out of about 2330 organs Wurlitzer built only 93 were 4 man. We have a beautiful 4/23 here in Rochester (NY) in superb condition.
Is this the organ from the RKO Palace? I believe the organ was designed and played by Tom Grierison(?) . Please let me know. I adored that man and his command of music.
I am pretty sure this is where I saw "Mary Poppins" when it first came to Detroit.
beautiful organ!
Way too dark!
Hey, i have a 1988 f250 7.3idi i have the same problem. how did you get the plug out?
The St. Louis Fox Wurltizer's original missing ranks have been put back in, so as far as I know, it should be close to or just as original as the Detroit Fox.
I agree but I also think it's a double-edged sword. Solid state very well COULD be working after 90 years. Do I want to bet on it? No, not really, lol, but there's nothing saying they can't. But moreso, the SS gives far more flexibility as they're far more user friendly and versatile. And computerization also gives you MIDI and playback capability. The old relays could never do that and they're maintenance intensive. It's cool to keep the original working and I like it, but SS has its place too.
the detroit did not have ranks removed. St.louis had ranks removed and then later on replaced most of them.
the radio city music hall to my knowledge has no electropneumatic relay or pneumatic in the console. there for loosing points unfortunately. there is alot to be said about the RCMH organ. its a love hate thing there i havnt seen it or heard it for myself yet but most i know who have played it say its a disaster because there are no tone shoots that were designed to bring the sound down to the lower levels, they were kibashed because it was getting in the way of lighting or something like that.
Also... thats strange its using my full name now i have to rebuild my account... i am Marshall7302 lol The organ has almost completed its entire restoration ... so everything sounds so much better and fuller and NOT SO MANY DEAD NOTES... i cant wait to go back and play it ... i have Les Miserables sheet music im teaching my self so ... more videos to come
@flyurway i have very little teachings on electronic organ. thats it.. and the story goes... i wanted to play this song 20 years or more ago.. and got yelled at for improvising from what was written in the easy to read book (seen on the rack) so my dad told my teacher that day "YOU are comming with us to the Senate Theater in Detroit this sunday to attend a concert." she did and after the concert at this very organ. she said " I had no idea anything like this even existed" and quit her job.
If the Detroit Fox had ranks changed and added, but the St. Louis organ had ranks removed, but the originals put back in place, wouldn't that make the St. Louis organ more original than the Detroit organ?
You're hearing the Tuba Mirabilis (possibly both Tubas actually) and the Tibias all at 8'.
Not bad! So with no formal training, just how did you learn to configure registrations, etc? I'd love to play and intend to find a way at some point. I've become involved with the maintenance crew of the beautifully maintained 4/23 in Rochester - coincidentally, it is Opus 1951! - so I have limited access to it and another 3/16. Have no idea where to go to learn to play it. These are incredible instruments (and machines!) and I hope to find a way to keep interest advancing with them.
Is that the Tuba Horn or Tuba Mirabilis at the beginning?
I think Kimball was supposed to actually build these organs. Wurlitzer probably outbid them at the last moment. This was in 1930 when theatre organ orders have dried up due to the Great Depression and the introduction of voice recordings in theatres. There was supposed to be another Fox Special for Newark, NJ that got cancelled and the Fox Special for SF was supposedly going to get the axe as well.
RCMH IS a WurliTzer in the sense that it came from the WurliTzer factory, but that is where, as you say, the similarity to a WurliTzer ends. I think of all the wonderful things that WurliTzer could have done with that organ if not shackled to that Kimball specification. A Fox Special on steroids. If the owners wanted a bit of Kimball in the organ, maybe they could have specified some of those wonderful Kimball string ranks.
The Radio City 4/58 isn't really a theatre organ let alone a Wurlitzer organ. It was designed by Kimball, who based it off of the 2nd largest 4m install, the Atlantic Convention Center Ballroom 4/55. There are many stops not found on typical theatre organs such as the Mixture ranks. The Fox Specials, however are 100% true theatre organs.
hes talking about a speaker lift thats in the middle of the stage that runs from the basement to just above or level wit the stage used for sound in current movies
Nothing like a good old piston thump.
yeah note the title .. a "friend like me" theres other parts added in there from aladdin
Old, simple technology - but good. It was what was available at the time. It took a lot of space, though!
The end is a great example of how the 'room' changes the sound. I often joke that in the pipe chambers it sounds like a bunch of beeps and honks but as soon as it mixes in a large space... completely different. Thanks for the video share. Hope to someday hear that organ in person.
Dear god.. standing next to the solo chamber with the swell open and the post horn solo'd. If that organ is balanced anything like the St. Louis organ, you must be deafened.
He's right, it's nearly impossible to find flat head brass screws anymore!
Wow. That is all!
@Organgrinder1010 Actually I can foresee some basic, but code compliant mil-spec solid state SCR's going strong for a few generations. You can buy them surplus, build simple plug-in cards, and hermetically seal in a box with diirections- all of the components to fix and service a newly replaced set, for several generations beyond that even. This would avoid circuit boards and microprocessors anyway. BTW the technology I'm talking about is already 50 years old itself.
Despite the jerky video, Dave's a treat to hear!
@Marshall7302 Largest remaining 4m install? How about Radio City 4/58? This is a 4/36 "Fox" (not Crawford) special.
@GliTCH11 it is rotation of 3 different stages in side blower housing just infront of the motor. your actually looking at the back of the motor the spinning shaft you see used to connect to a electrical generator for the organ low voltage supply.
Looks like it's running on reverse.
What's an organ blower?
It is what supplies air pressure to the wind system in a pipe organ.
This is scary good !! Sounds I've never heard before, and I've heard a lot of sounds.
Is that sound a result of mechanical rotation or air compression?
@Marshall7302 (Continued) We would have lost the relay system completely due to wirering codes for buildings. this organ has been installed at the Senate for longer then it was installed at the Fisher Theater, where it came from. If i could. i would re-wire the entire relay, to code keeping the electro pneumatic actions, and i would only like one thing to a new design.. and thats the setter board, replacing the setter board with something electronic, but.. lose the authenticity so no.
@Organgrinder1010 there has been some vulgarity in the use of the word multiplexing the connection between the organ and the relay, gutting the console and some want it re-spec but it would never go and or be tolerated but the club, however, this organ is used ALOT... probably more then most on a regular basis, and it is NOT in a climate controlled environment, so contacts are starting to wear on the stop tabs in the console and things like that, now the theater did close and we would have lost
