This is my fishing video channel. I mostly fish alone so thought it might be nice to share some of my experiences catching fish. This is a new hobby of mine making videos. I hope you enjoy them. I certainly had a good time catching the fish. If you have any questions feel free to email me. afishermansdiarywithiainupton@gmail.com

Fly fishing for salmon on the river Ayr, Nice sunny day but was challenging conditions as there was a strong upstream wind. It payed off though as got the first salmon of the year. An amazing fish. 10lb clean bar of silver. Lovely hen fish. One of the best fish I have ever caught. Led me on a song and dance but got it in eventually. Didnt realize how big it was till I got it in the net as the w...

Pike fishing the river Bladnoch in Dumfries and Galloway with a suicide duck lure. Very fun fishing session. caught 4 pike. Biggest was 7lb. Cant believe that someone made a lure that imitates a duckling but it works well.

Fly fishing for Salmon on the river Ayr
Your needing to start further up & fish into where your standing at the start of the video as your almost standing on the lie buddy. I think I’ve commented on another video of yours. I’m opposite bank from you. 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi great video can I ask what wading staff you using , now reached the point where I think I need one Ta
HI mate. Im sorry but I dont know who made the wading staff. I bought it will a salmon set up a few years ago. Its a must in my opinion if fly fishing and wading. Couple of times its saved my bacon when wading and not knowing the river lay out. As you can test the depth with the staff as you walk. Especially when the river is high and you cant see the bottom. Its one solid bit of metal if thats any use.
Nice catch
Thanks. It had been a hard week. Lost a few fish but got there in the end
Brilliant Iain. Result getting a fish in the net on what sounded like a frustrating week for you. New rod christened too. Well done 👍 🎣
Well done iain, i gave up the ayr, the people that run some of the clubs and the unfriendly atitudes just made me move on. Ive arthritis of the knees and had asked about access on the mauchline clubs facebook page and was told stuff like "man up" etc, i was even threatened, its quite ridiculous. Youve no idea the stuff i heard at the riverbank too, ayrshire rivers trust, a fantastic organisation, have my sympathy considering what theyve to deal with. The official figures at the clubs need to stop accusing and gossiping at get together and work for tge good of the river not accuse folk of this and that behind their backs, shocking
Thanks Robert. Had been a hard week but got there in the end
@@FraserCheyne sorry to here you had a bad experience on the Ayr. I just try and ignore the politics and concentrate on the fishing. I get what your saying about people not showing you around the river but sometimes you just have to spend the time and find these things out for yourself. Its look me years so figure out the stretch I fish thru trial and error but thats part of the fun.
Good to see you smile Iain, nice bright grilse you had there to christen the new rod too, well done. Oracle are nice rods with a good action, hope it catches you many more trout, sea trout and salmon.Cheers Peter. 🥃🍺
Thanks Peter. It was a good days fishing. I do like the new rod. it has managed a few salmon this year. still yet to come as havent uploaded yet
They're great wee rods Iain. I've got the 8/9 and it's a joy to cast with a Barrio switch line.
I agree they are good rods. that one is only a 7/8, I like the rod and its light and casts great. Just not quite enough stopping power for my liking I discovered after a bit of use but still like the rod. Should have gone for the 8/9 next time
The fast stream below the first pool you fished.I kept thinking to myself.I could winkle some trout & grayling out there with the nymphs.I fish the Ayr a bit further up from where you are fishing.
your right its good for both trout and grayling.
Better conditions, at least you contacted and saw fish, so only a matter of time!!Cheers Peter.
thanks peter. I got one the next day on the fly. Thats the next video. Currently uploading
Good effort Iain, despite the rain, hope you get one next time, cheers Peter.
thanks peter. Was a lot of fish moving that day
nice workout for the new rod Iain
First time trying it that day. Good rod. Just not enough stopping power. Casts well though
New rod?? 🎣
yes. Shakespeare oracle 2 switch rod. new second hand leeda 395 reel and 8 wt line. Nice rod but not enough stopping power I eventually worked out.
uh why did u post this today when u were fishing in july u must of forgot to post it im guessing
I got really behind with posting the videos as was busy with work over the summer. So im on catch up.
@@iainupton3214 understandable keep up the work
Looking forward to next season>>>No doubt I’ll catch there>>>have a nice Xmas m8>>>👌👌
Well dun that Fisherman.
Catch and Release.
You would enjoy your fishing a lot more , If you tried Fly fishing instead of that no skill needed chuck and hope method.
Fly fishing is better I agree. That was one of my older videos. These days I do tend to fly fish as long as the river conditions allow. Got a 10lb salmon on the fly in june.
Hi mate does the river do winter day tickets for grayling just curious 🤔
No Sorry no day tickets for grayling fishing in the winter. Members only.
Nice brown trout and well done, but personally I’d have putt it back.
still a lovely evenings ishing Iain
Looks like a tough evening.
aye it was pretty hard going. Thought there might have been more fish rising but has been a tough year generally for trout. Been a great year for salmon though if looking for a positive
Lovely, congratulations Iain and thanks for sharing.
your welcome. Few more to come yet. Been a good year.
Well done Ian.Plenty of fish in the river Ayr this year.
Thanks. Aye a few more than other years about this year. Just need some rain
An absolute belter, well done Iain
Thanks was rather a good one
Thanks iain as a fellow ayr angler for puting it back. That's the way to preserve what we have. Well done. I'm hoping to be on the beat further up on Monday. Just back from the dee and it was heaving with fish. Apparently this has been a better year. Not out the woods yet but a better year for scotlands salmon thanks to the likes of yourself sticking to returning g them
It has been a good year its true. Still got a month left. Could just do with some rain as hard to catch any salmon when the water is this low.
@@afishermansdiarywithiainup5377 yes I was out on Monday there, it's too low. Still, the fish are there. I always fly fish so I need a bit of water yet
Well done, it’s typical of the salmon you almost net it then it gets a second wind !
Thanks. It was a tricky fish but got there in the end
@MrGreegor69 Im sorry but I deleted your comments by mistake still trying to get the hang of this utube stuff
Well done ✌️✌️✌️
Thanks very much
Nice fish Iain, well done 👍
thanks mate
Thanks was rather a good one
Braw fish Iain oan a 7 weight rod.!! Great fun👌👌
Thanks pal. I would agree it was rather a good one. Luckily that 7wt rod is a special one so its got more stopping power than a usual 7wt. Was good fun though
@@afishermansdiarywithiainup5377 well done again Iain💪💪 ps,, what rod is it😉👌
@@scottconnelly4410 Its an airflo super stick 2 comp special
Brilliant Iain. Stubborn fish that but glad you got it in the net in the end. Beautiful fish well done 👏
Thanks Robert Was rather a good one I have to admit. One of the best fish ive had I think. Plenty more to come. Ive just got behind at uploading the videos as working and making the most of the fishing
Nice fish mate. 👏🏻
Thanks, was hard conditions that day
Happy birthday(I'm a bit late sorry)
Wee Bit late but thanks anyway
What’s your rod and line set up there?
Hi Kenny. Its a carbotec 5 wt 9ft6 fly rod and a 5 wt line with a furled leader and 10 ft tapered nylon line. My reel is an old rimly fly reel. Hope that helps. Thanks
is that craigie pool you are at ?
could be. Im afraid I dont give out my exact location anymore.
Thanks for taking us on another delightful fishing trip Iain, great to see you catching those pretty wild brownies, hope you enjoyed your supper too, very nicely done, cheers Peter. Glad to see the big one go back, he deserves another chance after surviving the heron or otter, and putting up such a spirited fight!!.
Thanks Peter. Was one of the better fishing trips of the year. Has been a hard year on the dry flies and that was the best days fishing. The trout was tasty that I had for my tea. I agree the bigger fish deserved a second chance after surviving the heron or what ever it was. Thanks for watching. Iain
Nice broonie mate..
Cracking fish Iain, superb. Greg.
Thanks Greg. That is the biggest of the year so far. Might be the biggest of the year as going to be mostly salmon fishing from now on as long as the water is running big enough.
That's wild and na need to chap it mate.
your welcome to your opinion but it was very tasty and I got 6 dinners out of it. You will see from my further videos I put most of my fish back now
Where abouts you fishing looks nice
Its the river Ayr
Nice troot Iain, hope it was tasty 😋
Cheers mate. It was very tasty. First one of the year
What stretch of the Ayr do you fish Ian, can you get day tickets for Salmon, online or otherwise
I fish the Annbank club water but all waters on river Ayr are worth a look. You can get a day ticket from the Annbank shop for 25 quid. All salmon and sea trout are catch and release but you can keep a couple of brownies on a day ticket for the pot. No fishing without a ticket though as its a private stretch
@afishermansdiarywithiainup5377 thanks for the info. I'm a member on the Clyde UCAPA water, we've been getting some salmon the last few weeks, but it's also nice to fish other rivers.
Trout for tea!! Nicely done lain. River looking in fine fettle, maybe a sea trout or salmon next time, happy fishing and all the best, tight lines, cheers Peter.
Thanks. It was a tasty fish. There might be a salmon or sea trout! Watch this space!!
Plenty salmon well grilse in the ayr now mate
There might be one or two about its true
Your line looks well over regulation.
Sounds like an old rimfly reel ???
yes it is a good old vintage rim fly reel. Great reels.
I would have returned him 😑
I get your stance but I did eat the fish. Got 6 dinners out of it. And I do return most of my fish.
Great video Iain, good to see you back out. That first trout was a cracker, well done! 👍
Happy birthday pal👍🎣
Thanks 👍
2 nice wild brownies, great stuff and well fished in tricky conditions. A microfiber cloth in your jacket might help with pesky raindrops on the camera lens. Most enjoyable with the river looking good. Cheers Peter.
HI Peter. Thanks. The first one was a lovely fish. I do usually try and keep the camera lens wiped but I forgot that time. Will try better in future
@@afishermansdiarywithiainup5377 no problem Iain, lovely film as usual, cheers Peter.
better to be fishing than not ! cheer Iain
its true was nice to be out. thanks
What a beautiful section of river, even if the pike weren’t cooperating! Out of interest, do you wear one of those midge net head thingys to stop the little sods feasting on you? Asking for a friend! 😂😂👍
Yes lovely stretch of river. I do sometimes wear a midge net but not that day. I actually have a jacket and headnet in one that is good when they are really bad. Fine for lures and bait fishing but not much use for fly fishing as you cant see the fly on the water.
Nice one Iain, cor luv a duck-the pike certainly did!! Maybe try that on the Ayr, and possibly invest in a couple of pike flies, could be good fun too, cheers Peter.
Hi Peter. Yes the Pike certainly liked the duck that day. Good fun. There isnt any pike in the Ayr so probably not catch much on the duck there. Maybe get a salmon. That would be a turn up for the books!! Never tried fly fishing for pike. Might have to give it a go.
@@afishermansdiarywithiainup5377 you never know a salmon might attack a pike fly, I bet they do in Ireland!!. Do you eat pike??any Good?.
Pike is good eating, Just lots of cross bones. Makes good fish cakes and fish curry.
@@afishermansdiarywithiainup5377 very nice with chips too, that's tea sorted!!😊
