HELP! HOARDING VINYL....A COMMENT RESPONSE #vinylcommunity
Переглядів 1122 години тому
My recent video 'Help! When Too Much Ain't Enough' ua-cam.com/video/C7nGoltIWnI/v-deo.htmlsi=dSP_LiNP6kbpysbA garnered some great comments, one of which is the basis of this video response. 1. How can you afford all this? 2. When can you find time to play all of it? 3. Does it get played more than once or twice, or does it get played, filed, and forgotten? A great comment, and some excellent qu...

Hey David! We're kind of cut from the same cloth; I watch very little TV, I've seen maybe a dozen movies in the last 10 years (none of them in the theater), I do not watch football, baseball, basketball or hockey, and I spend time walking be it outside or inside on my treadmill. Sadly there are too many albums that only get one or two plays, but that is on the artist, not me. You hate to talk money in a public forum, but without getting into numbers, I can afford what I buy because I have zero debt; no mortgage, no car payments, no credit card balances. I wish the government ran their house like we run ours. My wife and I worked hard to get where we are. We both have our passions and are fortunate enough to pursue them. Cheers!

A thought provoking video which raises some of my own fears and dilemmas. I am approaching retirement and do ponder if the stuff I am buy for music and other hobbies will get good use or will see its way to a local charity shop too soon. But in lighter moments I take it that life is a journey to enjoy as you best can and not think too much about the ending. A constant battle though! Also do you have some albums that you only listen to at certain times of the year/seasonal. Higher Life by S Winwood only gets played in the Summer and Albums by IQ are Autumnal. Much to do with playing these to the death when they were first released and i was in my late teens.

I have a compact collection. If I can't see it being played, I cull. If I am indecisive, I simply imagine the thing to be occupying space that could be better utilised, and I've never regretted my decisions, using the funds for vinyl I really would prefer. If I'm at all curious about some artist or other, I can always stream it, and I never get paralysis deciding what to play. I enjoy what I have.

This issue with collecting vinyl and CD’s that the viewer mentions is very true at least for me. I often feel guilty of not listening to or enjoying my collection especially the vinyl I have owned for decades. I do work but am almost retired and work 3-4 days a week only. Money is not really an issue but it can become an expensive hobby. My opinion for me is this…. ITS THE HUNT, ITS THE POSSESSION AND ITS THE BUZZ OF HAVING IT MINE. Going to record stores to hunt for something new to add is the best part. Listening to everything is almost impossible but the music is always the main purpose but for me not the main reason. I’m a completist so 25% of my collection might be filler but I won’t sell them off. 😅. Thats my take on this silly hobby and like I tell the wife “every man needs a hobby” 😊. It’s been over 50 yrs for me. I don’t drink, smoke, gamble or do drugs so my $$ is dusty. You and I are brothers from a different mother 😊. The collection is more important than $$.

Excuse me for asking these questions - and I could ask it of almost anyone in the Vinyl Community doing these videos, but I picked you to ask...How can you afford all this? When can you find time to play all of it? And does it all get played more than once or twice, or does it get played, filed, and forgotten? I have a large collection - or so I thought until I started watching these videos - but when I worked for a living I never had the time to listen to it all more than once? Even now that I'm retired, there aren't enough hours in the day. So, how do you do it? (No disrespect intended, by the way.)

I just have to add something: ”From Genesis to Revelation” is a great album. It has some kind of mysticism in it, and romantic in a melancholically beatiful way, with much better melodies than BeeGees. The strings only made that etherial sound better! Listen to ”The Serpent”: ”said your waking up to life”! ”Am I very wrong?” That melody cuts through your heart, especially with the flute layer making it sound like something that was lost. ”Try to close my ears they play so loud…the happiness machine is trying hard to sing my song.” It should break your heart the way that line is delivered by Peter, whose depressions have caused him so much pain. All that would be lost if it got demolished by a pompous production. No, revaluate and listen to the album again, without prejudice from what people say, from what Banks says. Listen to what Anthony Phillips says instead and listen with the ears of a child. ”Music, all I hear is music Guaranteed to please”. That album is just as good as any on that list, especially those after 1976.

I culled late 90s a section of my mostly 90s albums but kept a majority of them. Of course I regret it as most I'll never find or be able to afford now. I'd settle for CDs tbh. I have too many records now. I've done videos for a decade and realise how much I've bought from what is behind me in those videos as they've grown with more and more expedits higher up to the ceiling. I have sold alot too I do occasionally sell at fairs but often end up trading at them before all the regular customers come in. That's a nice attic room (?) you have there.

My only advice to buying too much vinyl is to LISTEN more, trying to convince yourself you are more of a listener than a collector. It is “kinda” working for me, my 2024 buying is definitely down.

It was Steve McQueen on the thumbnail that brought me here. One of my all time favourites. I saw them play live at Portsmouth Guild Hall on the Cars and Girls tour. And I actually got a direct smile from Wendy. What a moment that was. Someone that I have not seen but wish I had is The Dream Academy. Kate St. John played oboe and other instruments for them and she did a great job on backing vocals (not a million miles away from Wendy Smith's very gentle vocal range). Check them out if you aren't familiar with them. Cheers

Sir David. Greetings from Canada. Great vid (as per usual) I love your rants , your bike rides, your music vids. Your situation (election) somewhat and mostly mirrors our political malaise here in Canada. Don't even get me going on USA. Sadly a great country in rapid decline politically. Love your top 10! I too see myself as an unattached voter. In Canada we have 4 distinct parties in the House of Commons. The best federal governments we have ever elected were/are either a left leaning Conservative majority or a right leaning Liberal majority, both with a social bent (if you get my drift!) Lastly - your t-shirt - Castrol oil! That is what we need to force feed our politicians, castrol oil for the body......until we can cleanse their minds of all the s**t from them and start fresh with your top 10 embedded into them. Keep on keeping on!! PS don't be late picking up your daughter and friends. Been there - done that!!

That's so kind Pat, thanks. As you know, I'm always a bit apologetic in posting videos like this, because most people who trip over my videos don't come for the politics/current affairs, but it's gratifying to know that some people make the time to give them a watch/listen. There's a few people over here drawing parallels between our GE2024 and what happened in Canada when the conservative numbers collapsed some years ago. They cite the Reform UK Party as having the potential to change politics here for some time to come. I'm not convinced myself; I think under our system that a helluva tall order. Regardless, it's clear that most of us, or both sides of the pond, prefer centrist parties, with the occasional pendulum swing leftwards and rightwards.....but not too far. The scary thing for me these days is ideologues and their authoritarian overreach, and I think we take our eye off the motives of our political class at our peril.

  • @stuarttaylor5750
    @stuarttaylor5750 8 днів тому

The current state of politics in the UK is such a mess that it might take generations to understand and unravel. Certainly it has not been helped by the internal conflict within the current government (as a result of Brexit) leading to them to be more interested in that battle than running the country. In my opinion they don't deserve to be continue in Government. But then the alternative under Starmer is equally underwhelming, and I fear that should/when it gains power, it will just devolve into a revenge trip that no one will benefit from, especially those currently most in need. What people need is an effective government that gets things done - and that doesn't mean just throwing money at a problem, but coming up with something that actually works. Bizarrely enough, this was actually what the orange man got right in many, not all, cases - relative peace in the middle east, no new wars, increasing detente with N Korea, a fairly prosperous economy. But at least he had a vision and the will to get things done, and actually made an attempt to do so. I am not saying we should have our very own DJT, but we need to find someone who has that vision and charisma to take us forward for the betterment of all. All IMHO. TL:DR we're all fucked

Such an eclectic mix and great video.Must admit that as a collector of old and new the Lenny Kravitz album blew me away(reminded me of Prince)Such a talent and one of my faves of the year so far 😁😁👍👍

Yes, it's great isn'y it. He'll never match Prince, of course, but he makes a great stab at it (at least the rock and soul, if not the dance tunes). I've never understood why he has been so maligned. He's an outstanding talent.

Coincidentally I’ve been eyeing up that Neil Young. I’m only really a fan of After The Goldrush, Zuma & ‘Everyonody Knows’ I’ve always wanted the Massey Hall Concert but it’s £50.00 plus, so this would be a good compromise. I might pull the trigger now.

Hi HP, these early bootleg-killing releases are all pretty much of a muchness, but they're all good. I don't think Massey Hall has been a particular standout for me, so you can more or less give any of them a go. Good news is that they're mostly going quite cheap, as new.

Hi David, definitely know what you mean about buying running ahead of listening. I’ve slowed my buying in June and will do the same in July. Want to just enjoy the stuff I’ve bought. Loads of great stuff in that haul… wow! The Triffids is one I’m after… love Another Green World too. Weller, Neil Young, Springsteen.. enough to keep you busy for a while! Happy listening, Jack

Hi David! I see you are rolling out the David Atkinson Summer 2024 Fashion Collection! I only have a CD compilation of Lightnin' Hopkins, but it's good. I should get some more. I have a Richard Wright album called Broken China that came out sometime in the '90s. I haven't listened to it probably since that time for whatever reason. I picked up a copy of that Triffids album at a record show a few months ago for $5. The sleeve is beat but the record cleaned up nicely thankfully. Great deal on that live Neil Young album! I have Viva Hate but on compact disc. That Lenny Kravitz looks great! I remember Neneh Cherry from my club days a million years ago. And along comes Bread...that was a surprise. I must admit I have a greatest hits album. I am about to have a "buying frenzy" this Sunday as I am off to a record show. I don't normally do shows in the better weather, but a friend has convinced me to come along. Have a good weekend!

@@davidatkinson-lifematters4826 I am listening to all that new stuff before I make the video. Will definitely put that out this coming weekend if I get through it all by that point! It was a magnificent haul!

Your record room is pretty cool! Lots of great pick ups. Just curious do you use outer plastic sleeves?

Thanks. Like everyone, I wish the room was bigger. As regards outer plastic sleeves, I don't use them. Too heavy, and they take up too much space. Besides, once the albums are stored in the faithful Kallax, they're well looked after.

I've never been to Psychotron records, would love to. I used to buy records from Pete at the London fairs before he opened his own shop. Always a top selection. Great selection here David - often too much is indeed never enough!

I think you’re an obsessive buyer mate, you can’t possibly listen and enjoy all this stuff in any depth. The ‘hit’ is from the acquisition rather than the appreciation, I suspect.

To some degree, you're right. I love a bargain, and do pick-up cheapies whenever I can. Fortunately these crazy buying flurries don't happen too often. As for listening in depth, that of course varies, but music has been an obsession for most of my life. I rarely watch movies, and don't watch TV, so music has always dominated my bandwidth, and still does.
