what did you think about delaying/not broadcasting scores immediately? I was torn, part of me wanted to know but I also enjoyed the secrecy too.
I'm going to watch the Pipe Pro from Australia. Staying in a dorm because that's all I could afford. Still very expensive and really accommodation options on the north shore were almost non existent. Car hire is also expensive as well. The problem with the WSL option is that it is at Turtle Bay, so nowhere near the comp. You want to get their early for parking but also the call. Given the total package price, the WSL must have got accommodation at the Turtle for way less than what is online. Anyway this is my annual treat. I just want epic Pipe. Also booked the total waiting period this year because the last two years it has finished very late in the window. Consoled myself that travelling is just damned expensive these days, especially when you have to pay with AUD's!!
I think you are misunderstanding. I don’t believe you translated the original question. The question appears to be, “who surfs more?” Its a harmless safe media question. I dont think he’s claiming, what you think he is. My spanish is okay and that helped me understand.
I’m no fan of wave pools but they are a more attractive option than the waves on the CS .
Great coverage guys , standouts for me in 24 were Old Surf Dad for your insights on the year of surfing (def the best by miles) and the Big wave surfing had a break out year , why aren’t more sponsors jumping on the Big wave crew ? Totally agree with you and T-Bone on your picks , looking forward to more OSD in 25 ….yew.
Thanks so much! We really appreciate it. Good to have you in the community! Bring on the 2025 season!
JJF no questions asked
Let me know when he gets invited to the Eddie let alone wins one. Stupid remark what is he smoking 😂
If Felipe was keen to charge big waves he may get on a good run. He would still be shy of being a better surfer than John
Such a shame Filipe had a sore guts at pipeline other year.
Fillipes only edge over JJF is in waves under 4 foot
A lot of you have asked for the actual broadcast. Here is the link: instagram.com/p/DDAN72NNQ1q/
The tour isnt just 2 surfers though theres surfers that can end the comp for anyone of the top 5 at any point in the comp and jjf is the more well rounded surfer when hes healthy hes unbeatable
Good point. There are others that will challenge these two. I see Yago having a good year and the rest of the top 5 are gunning for the champ and the returning champ.
Lol filipe is better at surfing sh!tty waves but jjf been practicing in crap waves
yes! and why isn't Filipe practicing in reef waves?
JJF is the man at any wave that people actually care about. His edits from Hawaii every season are legendary, when the surf is cranking, Toledo is nowhere to be found. His Olympic performance at chopes was nothing short of shameful. Teenage girls were charging harder than him. JJF has no weak areas, Toledos weaknesses are glaring.
"Toledo is nowhere to be found.."
It’s only Filipe ever if it’s head high. Anything above that there’s no chance whatsoever. John’s the best surfer in the world. He does what Filipe does on head high waves in double overhead waves with ease.
Yeh, John does maneuvers on triple overhead waves that others do on shoulder high dribblers. Haleiwa comes to mind.
Freakin hilarious. Did I see Filipe in the Eddie? Have I seen Filipe deep on a big fat Pipe bowl? Chopes? Any wave of consequence? Gabby is JJF’s closest competitor. Felipe is a weapon and phenomenal surfer, probably the best in waves under 4 feet but man he is a long way off the top 2. His ego is up there though.
Pretty much what you just said right there.
All brazos think they’re the best at everything JJF has always been way better than Toledo better bloke too
Filipe is a great surfer but doesn't have the power that JJF has.
this. simply.
Maybe in an alternate reality, stick boy braza.
'Stick boy' still one of the fastest cleanest carving surfers I've ever seen. Thankfully he can't ride Pipe or there would be 5 more trophies on his mantle. Haha
That a big No !
Final is at Fiji this year so we’ll know in about 9 months… gonna be Ramzi cuz he can go frontside 🤪
Finals should be a damn good time! Yo! You picking Ramzi!? That's bold! Love it. Happy New Year my friend!
With the 2025 tour setup, Filipe is clearly the best surfer in the world. Taking out the heavy barrel waves and looking at the tour without factoring in stuff like fatigue or mental wear, he’s the favorite to win almost every event. No surprise he’s got the lowest odds at 5.0 (Gabby and JJ close behind at 5.5) to take the title, even with the Finals being in Fiji.
The swell will determine the favorite in several of the locations that Fil and John don't have a distinct advantage, but I would argue that John has a better chance at a small wave venue than Filipe at a big reef wave. I just looked at the odds on betoonline.ag (for us in the US) and Currently Gabriel Medina is second with a +300 (Bet $10 win $30) while Filipe is +400 followed by Griff and Jack at +600. John John is not listed as a futures bet telling me he's ranked #1 by oddsmakers. Are you looking at TAB numbers? Interesting..
No mystery here. Toledo is better in performance waves up to 10 feet (or 12, if it’s J-Bay or a similar wave), while John is better in barrels and big waves. The thing is, John is much closer to Filipe in turns than Filipe is to John in barrels and heavy water. The real rivalry is between Gabriel and John. If we’re talking about a typical CT scenario, I’d still go with Medina because I think the gap between them in rippable lefts (in Medina’s favor) is bigger than any advantage John might have over Gabriel. At the end of the day, all the criteria are basically just a slight edge for one over the other.
As I was answering the comments above, I said basically the same thing that you said so well, "The thing is, John is much closer to Filipe in turns than Filipe is to John in barrels and heavy water." Perfect.
Totally agree that Nathan's feed was awesome. To hear what locals thought of rides, wipeouts...felt like one was there on the beach, unsanitized. Koa's 30/10 still gives goosebumps, awooooo!
Do not disrespect JJF. Only in 1 ft Toledo maybe better
would you go to 3 foot? Ha
Well analyzed guys! Perhaps closer than one thinks, although Tbone nailed it - "not enough waves of consequence on Tour". Plus your conclusion. Good show 🤙
Thank you. It was interesting to break it down. I don't think Tbone and I thought it would be so close when we looked at the tour.
Toledo is a one trick pony, JJF has it all, airs, turns and barrels
His one trick (clean speed turns) is pretty good tho. I'd say he has other tricks too (airs and did I mention speed?) haha
I don´t think Filipe meant that seriously, didn´t find the link to the subject, but if he really think he´s better than JJ he´s tripping honestly, JJ is the best surfer in the world overall, that´s a no brainer. Toledo might have Jhon in the small surf, but that´s that.
I think the pressure in the moment made him say things he didn't mean to say...or did he? Yeh, he might be trippn. Haha.
Wow, Nibbler is a good edit, hadn't seen that yet! Another nipper to watch is Dane Henry, similar aerial antics.
I actually mixed up Dane Henry with Hughie Vaughn. Don't get me wrong, Hughie Vaughn charges way over his fighting weight and his airs are good, but it's Dane Henry that's doing crazy stuff that I was going on about in the video. Big Fan. Thanks for your comment!
JJF won the Eddie, Triple Crown and WSL in the same year. A couple of years ago he had a paddle session at an outer reef that was the most impressive surfing I've ever seen.
Thanks for reminding me of the movie 'Maps of Home' ua-cam.com/video/n3NS9bPa5qY/v-deo.html with the outer reef session and the Haleiwa section with Jack Robbo. Gotta watch that again!
Let's see Philipe surf Teahupoo when it's huge or some of the other big waves John surfs. John is the best all around surfer there is.
John = waterman
It's funny because Felipe has won at good sized Bells, Margaret's, J Bay and Portugal and sunset beach but anything over 8ft jjf has it hands down. But you've got guys like Kelly and Mick and any other pro that's being honest saying Felipe is hands down the best surfer on the planet 6ft and under with room to improve still. And like Pottz said years ago if he wants it he's got the talent to be good in big stuff to but then what would everyone else do for the next 8yrs on your when he just smokes everyone at That point. Those were Pottz words not mine but I do agree. he's lightning fast and style is solid as it gets! I've never seen anyone maintain the speed he does and his rail game at high speed is f-ing amazing. But that being said Jjf is hands down the best all around guy for sure! Like they said 1ft to 30ft he's an all terrain ripper that's just a beast so I think they both have their places in history secured in the upper echelon of surf history.
Great points. Filipe has won in bigger surf at several locations, but I think his achilles heel is shallow reef (Tahiti and Pipe). You're right to say that if he mastered that he would be nearly unbeatable, but thankfully we get to have these debates about who is better! Ha :)
Can't wait for the WSL season to start!
Mee too! If you don't already know I have a fantasy league (one free, one $20 buy in winner take all) if you want to join us. It's a dman good time. I'm working on the website right now for next season, but all the info will be posted soon at www.oldsurfdad.com/
John is one of the greatest surfers of all time, in my opinion better than Kelly although there's no dial Kelly was obsessed with winning.
Better than Kelly? Put the pipe down.
@datapusher- John was way better than Kelly as a youth, you can't argue with Kelly's competitive success.. and take away from the injuries that John had he would have probably one more titles. Look at the footage from J Bay when John was 13, Kelly was not that good at that age, and John is way more well-rounded as an individual. I grew up surfing around Slater, John is a waterman Kelly is a surfer
This is an interesting debate! Maybe we tackle this on in a future show.
@OldSurfDad consider this, its no secret...Kelly " doesn't like" to surf Sunset or Haleiwa. There is still a defining element to how surfers handle Hawaii, no question Kelly is high performance, you don't win that much being less than the best competitively. Go back 2 years and look at the footage from John's Haleiwa sessions - I lived across the street from Ali'i Beach Park for many years and I have never seen anybody attack that wave like John does. That footage is absolutely mind-blowing, and I'll tell you that place is a true test on a 6' day. The watermelon aspect is really what takes him to another level, and he is just a natural. Style is another factor, in considering that my favorites will always be John then Andy and then Kelly somewhere after that, Fanning and Medina up there also. Kelly's obsession to win cost him a lot of quality time in life
I don't think it's fair to compare the two. Filipe will never be the full package, nor will he overcome his fear of large surf of consequence. That's what it takes to be the best, this comparison is mute
Should Filipe have said this on ESPN then? Or did he get railroaded and now regrets it? It's a shame because he is incredibly talented, yet his weakness is there for all to poke at.
@@OldSurfDad when you're claiming to be the best, and out to be number one, your weaknesses will show. It's okay not to be perfect, but those are the facts. Filipe's dad came out and spoke for him regarding his issues in big surf and then he kind of followed up. Quite possibly nobody can beat him and surf that's 4 ft and less, but all these pros nowadays surf very good in small waves. At that level in any sport, everybody's looking for a reason to watch you falter. Still keeps him from that ultra top level class
Ha ha. Let's hope JJF, GM or KS draws FT in R1 at Pipe 8-10' or at Chopes and GLand.
Depending on where they rank Filipe this could actually happen at Pipe! Whoa
jack wins Portugal john pipe , flip -SA .. griff EL SALVADOR
good call, let's see.
I think he can in anything under 5 ft
Agree, but would you go to 6 feet? Haha
By the way, Filipe has won 4x in Rio, out of which 3 were in Saquarema
Brazilians usually win in Brazil
@mattgurin6168 except for medina, but Filipe is probably the one who won the most in Rio (and still they didn't remember that Filipe won in Rio before)
@Wetsand348 Rio is such a small piece of the pie, the Brazilians are favored at home....Gabe is not scared, Filipe will probably never conquer his fears. Got to have the full package if you want to be the best
Yes, I made a mistake on this. I was thinking Gabriel Medina when I said that. Dang. My bad.
Overall, john is better simply because of big barrels. But if they are both at the top of their performance, on the table, Filipe will be first and john second. Filipe is better in most waves
This can be argued for sure, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some like Johns radical power turns over Filipes clean speed carves. Because the WSL is subjective, judges decide in competition. In free surf edits we get to decide what we prefer.
Good discussion, Filipe has john in the small gutless kinda waves with his extreme speed and reliability to land reverses and snaps, but anything in decent size, waves of consequence and perfect powerful points john has it all the way, also i believe Filipe has also won Brazil at least 3 or 4 times rather than none, the tour 100% favours smaller wave surfers like fil but the otherworldly ability and skill of surfers like john and medina is ultimately clear to the people throughout the year
At J-Bay, Filipe is the best surfer of all time, hands down, and John John doesn’t even come close. You gonna tell me J-Bay isn’t a wave of consequence? Hahaha!
Yes, you are correct - Filipe has won 3 times in 2018, 2019 and 2022. I was thinking of Gabriel Medina who has not won there yet. Let's hope there's swell at most of the events that will level the playing field!
@@Carlosmm53 You could certainly make the argument that Filipe is the best competitive surfer at J-bay with 3 impressive wins there, but Kelly and Mick each have 4 wins and higher heat win percentages. As far as J-Bay being a wave of consequence, I wouldn't put it in the same category as Tahiti and Pipe because it lacks a shallow reef although the rocks at J-Bay are pretty gnarly and barnacle encrusted. I hope to see pumping swell at J-Bay this year and see some epic surfing. Yew!
... Hey Dave, I remember Liam Mac being so tuned into pipe on a couple of ol vhs movies ( that I have no chance of remembering ) unfortunately... But yeah he had his pipe game well and truly locked down... I think he was wearing a helmet ? .. possibly green and/ or camo colors ? ... How's your memory Ol boy ? 😎 Ring any bells ?
Dude! Liam was always wearing something to stand out - Camo, Gath helmet with the shade down and he even had a helmet one year painted with the Raiders colors and logo! Ha. Pretty epic. Good memories.
Happy days😀👏
Happy New Year Martin!
... Thanks fellus ,.. good coverage and discussion ,as usual.. all the best for 2025 🙏 🌊
JJF is a way better surfer than Philipe , no question. It poses the question , does the WSL tour reward small wave surfers ? For me the fact the championship is run at Trestles says a definite yes .
If the WSL tour has small waves during the season then advantage Filipe, but with some good swell at the events it opens up the competition. Fortunately there's no more Trestles Final and the Final 5 will battle it out at Cloudbreak in Fiji. That seems to be more of an advantage for John, Robbo, Yago and Gabriel (and let's not forget last year's winner Erin Brooks).
@@OldSurfDad it’s not advantage Filipe, it’s advantage to everyone including the 18 year old wildcard, if it’s held in 12+ the flipping and spinning and getting the lucky 2 foot wave out of a heat of 1.5 footers is gone. You only have to look at the data, wsl in small waves the ratings are way down, and the UA-camrs surfing 15foot cloud break are getting all the views, they need a better event model or they’ll keep haemorrhaging
Toledo has got way better faster cleaner carves in waves up to 6ft but above that JJF gets the nod and toledo doesn't know how to get barrled
Actually he has great technique to get barreled, his problem is when it gets big. It's a lot more of a psychological thing than anything else
When we had that swell in California and Hawaii during the holidays, Filipe showed a clip of himself on instagram getting these little tube drainers in Nicaragua. Pretty stylish little barrels, but next to the other content of Huge Mavericks and Pipe bombs and The Eddie I felt a little bit sorry for him. I mean, sure, he can thread the needle on some beachy, but reef waves are his kryptonite. I agree that his speed carves are nearly flawless and his ability to read (double overhead and under) waves and flow through them is his greatest strength.
@@OldSurfDad Yep i agree he knows how to get barreld well its just when the swell jacks up he just cant do it mentally
I'm about to order this Camcorder and I just wanted to check with you if you're still happy with it. Unfortunately I can't find anywhere in Calgary for me to rent or test it out. So, now that you've had it for about 2 months are you still happy with it? Thanks in advance.
I've used it sparingly the last two months because of other projects. Pro Surf Season for me starts in late January, but I used it last week and was really happy with the results. I am going to take Doug Jensen's class as well to get to know the camera better. Wish I could give you a more glowing review, but I'm just not there yet, but will know in a few more months. Hope that helps. Good Luck!
@@OldSurfDad Well, I'm on board. (excuse the pun :) It's been order and like you I'll be taking the course too as I feel it will allow me to really get to know the camera. Thanks.
@@andyarts8382 Old Surf Dad loves puns! Well Done. Lol
Bells is completely different at low tide from high tide and changes in between and tyoe depends on tide wind and swell direction so bells has a,great many different tyoes of waves bells can he a star studded wave depends on the parameters. Iv surfed 6 to 8 bells at low tide reeling from rincon thru the bowl to the button like indo and barrels. The greatest thing about bells it's a great wave to set you up to smash the biggest days on the east coast. Bells can be thick and cold like a moving mountain at 8 to 10 and up. So a day out in that and when you go surf sandon point at 6 foot solid. you can just surf that like a lightweight 3 foot wave. Biggest challenge iv aways found at bells is if its 6 to 8 you aways get rogue 10 ft plus sers every so often. So what ever your surfing you gotta be ready to add 4 feet or so extra for them rogue sets. If its 6 to 8 or 8 to 10 on set that extra few feet on rogues can really scare the shxt outta you if your not in great fitness or even go close to drowning cause the cold water and 4 3 wetty makes it all harder iv had the pleasure to watch Courtney out there pre comp she is a legend a full on charger at bells I'd luv to see her back
Thank you for this. Does it have time code like the 200?
Thanks for watching! No, the NX800 does not have dedicated timecode input or output as I understand. That's something I don't use and if it's important to you, I'd get the Z200.
Thanks for the great video and the quick response.
Thanks so much for making this video. Curious on what your thoughts would be for Wildlife video? I'm in the Canadian Rockies and film bears etc but often hiking around and my sigma 60-600mm and the heaver tripod it wearing down this old body. Looking or another alternative..
I feel you on the "wearing down this old body"! For the surf video featured, one has to hike about two miles down a trail and through some soft sand. My NX800 is definitely lighter than my old setup. The camera weighs less than 5 pounds and is really all I need now. I think your sigma lens alone weighs more than that, but there are tradeoffs of course. We do completely different types of shooting, but yet I think related in the requirements for the job. There's less bokeh with the NX800, but so much more on offer. I love the ease of use and versatility all in one package and the focus is great. Shooting bears and wildlife sounds pretty fun and exiting, but I imagine it takes time to find the situation and hopefully not as 'run and gun' as it sounds! Ha! The heaviest thing I have to carry is my tripod (E-Image 2-Stage Aluminum Tripod with GH06 Head) that weighs about 12 1/2 pounds. Now that my camera is lighter I'm hoping to get a lighter tripod that can give me the same solid foundation. I like the NX800 a lot right now and would recommend it, but ultimately depends on what your needs are. I'll be doing a follow up review after a few more projects and I get to know the camera better. Thanks for your comment. Cheers!
@@OldSurfDad All great info. For me it is actually run and gun...hahah or run and bearspray...So timing is everything. They don't hang around for very long. I look forward to your future post especially the tripod you choose. Mine is 17lbs..ugh. But sturdy.
