Olsem Wanem Sapos Yumi Wok Semak
#OlsemWanemSapos
To celebrate Children's Day, we're finally sharing the FIRST out of three powerful videos that we created in partnership with the Vois Blong Mi (VBM) team at CARE in Vanuatu :
Olsem Wanem Sapos Yumi Wok Semak?
We are honoured to support the VBM team at CARE in Vanuatu and Pacific Girl to bring you powerful short films, each highlighting key issues identified by young women during VBM’s Participatory Action Research (PAR) workshops on Tanna.
CARE in Vanuatu worked with schools in rural and remote areas of Tafea to hold empowerment workshops with adolescent girls between the ages of 12 -19. The goal of the workshops was for these young girls to feel more respected and safer in their homes and communities, to be better able to exercise their rights and to have more equal and increasing opportunities.
After attending the workshops, adolescent girls participated in PAR workshops to build on their newfound skills, knowledge and confidence.
They worked together to identify key issues in their community that they wish to see change and identified advocacy targets. These videos are a product of this work and the change they want to see.
This short film highlights the reality of young girls in Tanna and is an eye-opening look at the unequal distribution of household chores. Chores shouldn't be seen as gender roles but a necessary life skill for both boys and girls to have.
Let's challenge traditional gender roles and strive for equality within our homes and communities across Vanuatu!
BIG THANKS to our partners at CARE in Vanuatu, MATAKAMBU for filming and producing these videos, and to the wonderful actors from the Youth Centre at Wan Smol Bag!
We wouldn’t have been able to bring the young women’s ideas to life without your support.
The ‘Laef Blong Mi, Vois Blong Mi’ project is part of the Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development Program’s Pacific Girl initiative, supported by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
