Handmade: 1200 Year Old Bog Oak Chef Knife
Process of making a chef knife and wood saya from a single piece of 1200 year old bog oak. The blade is made out of 26C3 carbon steel. I use this steel because it allows me to achieve a hamon blade finish. I decided to use a large piece of bog oak so that the wood grain matches the saya. After the saya is chiseled out, glued up and shaped I finish by making a retention pin. This pin is made from a piece of brass and bog oak and is used to hold the blade in the sheath.

Handmade: Canvas Micarta Lanyard Bead

In this video I show the process of making a small lanyard bead out of a composit material (canvas micarta) using a mini lathe to do most of the finer shaping and finishing. I attach these beads to my smaller knives to give an extra place to grip on the handle and for style points. I currently have a couple finished beads made from various materials available on my Etsy page www.etsy.com/shop/H...
Handmade: My First Dagger

First time making a dagger. This was a tricky build because I had to keep everything very symmetrical. This dagger will be carried as a boot knife so I also made a clip on sheath. I used 80CrV2 carbon steel for the blade. Stabilized walnut, maple burl, brass pins and canvas micarta liners for the handle. This was a custom order build, if you would like to have something custom made check out my...
Handmade: Chef Knife with a Hamon

In this video I make a chefs knife out of 26C3 carbon steel. I differentially heat treat the blade to get a hamon which I then etch and polish for better contrast. The handle is a piece of dyed and stabilized maple burl with big 8mm aluminum pins. I finish by making a leather sheath/blade cover. This knife is currently available on my website. This is very nice and not using a lot of weird tools. Didn't you want to use water to shape it a bit more to the blade?

    • @HelixKnives
      @HelixKnives Місяць тому

      Yup, a lot of the tools that I still use are from a cheapo leatherworking kit that I got when I started. On this model I couldn't do much wet forming because the leather was thicker where the snap is and wouldn't move much.

    You could lightly drag it on a pieace of hard wood or Cork to eliminate the wire edge? Btw how did you produce it?

    • @HelixKnives
      @HelixKnives 2 місяці тому

      I finish by using a leather strop, that gets rid of the wire edge. It happens naturally when sharpening. This is a more extreme case because the straight razor is hollow ground and super thin so it produces a very big wire edge.

    That’s amazing!! How do you get a clean handle glue up with textured metal like that?

    • @HelixKnives
      @HelixKnives 2 місяці тому

      Thanks! I taught this would be a problem as well, but I just clamped the scales on tight when I did my glue up and had no problems. The marks are not super deep and the epoxy will fill any small holes at the area where the handle and blade meet.

    I really need a belt sander, wpuld make some tasks alot easier, im still on my first knife, actually im making 2 blades but waiting for my propane furnace so I can heat treat them. But i only have a angle grinder and drill press as for power tools

    • @HelixKnives
      @HelixKnives 3 місяці тому

      I started with a makeshift filing jig to do my blade bevels and I heat treated the first 3 blades in a barbeque grill with coal and a hairdryer blower. A belt grinder is a very good investment I do the majority of blade and handle shaping on it. If you want crisp bevel lines you can try hogging off material with the angle grinder and then using a filing jig to file a crisp bevel line. @GoughCustom has a video on how to make a filing jig.

    • @zulkiizsukesada4984
      @zulkiizsukesada4984 3 місяці тому

      @@HelixKnives atm i start with the angle grinder and carefully make the bevels and then I use normal files to finish it. I only have a gas grill so I would need a fire pit to use coal and hairdryer
