Feelgrounds Patrol Lite Review/Best Casual Barefoot Boot For Fall/Winter/Best Vegan Barefoot Boots
Last year we reviewed the Patrol Winter, but found them a little too insulated to use outside of the coldest situations. This year we wanted to try out their little brother, the Patrol Lite, to see if they suited us any better. Basically the exact same shoe minus the waterproof membrane and faux insulated fur, the Patrol Lite are a stylish, water resistance, extremely barefoot feeling boot that we're excited to tell you about. We'll discuss our like and dislikes of the boots in today's video, plus give a mini review of the KIDS version of the boot. Time stamps and affiliate links below.
**SIZING NOTE** Sometimes we run out of time and forget to mention this, but with Feelgrounds our normal EU size has always worked out perfectly, this shoe is no different.

How does Lems sizing compare to Altra?....I'm size 9 in Altra and it fits great, just wondering if I should size same, up, or down with the Lems summit....thanks for the great videos.
Lems are just slightly snug. For the Summit, especially if you're ever gonna wear thicker socks, I'd probably go a half size up
Love the fact that they made a shoe that looks like a new balance and then gave it a name that looks like a backwards N.
planned obselence on training shoe soles would be an interesting video. these look like some nice shoes if they are wide enough
Hi I checked their size chart, their EU24 is 15.2cm long/7.1cm wide. my son's feet now is 14cm long/ 5.9cm wide. I know for length you plus 12mm is ok, what about the width, is feelgrounds shoes too wide for my son's regular feet? I know they suitable for wide feet kids. Does that mean I need to go for another brand?
@@erxu2882 I wouldn't worry about the width. I'm sure his toes would appreciate the room to splay out
African trooper Vs barefoot bruin
Mine were shot at about 5 miles the tread on the forefoot was nonexistant
Still can't figure out why Converse doesn't make a wide toe box Chuck Taylor All Star shoe.
So I know running is quite personal in terms of what to wear for shoes, based on so many things obviously, (sidenote, this video just really make me want to run ahaha, so thanks? Really cool video to have for a bit of a review! You all did great!) but as someone who has walked in barefoot shoes for a little over a decade, but has never done any running, is there a range of thickness you might recommend as a starting point? I took a look at the stack height for the Runners and I gotta say, it has me worried for my ankles, but I know I need more padding than any of my current barefoot shoes! For reference, during general exercise, I wear my xero 360s, but those would absolutely not be enough padding for running at all. Thickest walking shoe I own is actually probably the Splay 101s.
@@MsSilentH we just reviewed the Altra Escalante 4, I'd start there! It has 24mm of stack height, lots of cushion, it's a great running shoe if you're looking for a lot of comfort. I would think that for someone like you who's been wearing barefoot shoes for so long anything more under your foot would be complete overkill. When we first got it it felt like too much cushioning, but we've really appreciated it as time has gone on and especially as we've used it on longer runs. My only caution with getting the Splay is that even though it has 18mm of stack height, it isn't really cushioned, the midsole is pretty hard, and I think if you're gonna start running the Escalante will give you a better experience.
@@sonsofsever Many thanks! Yea that was my big worry, too much height, but I feel like I'd definitely still appreciate cushioning, so good to know about the Splays as well, not something I would have figured with the 18mm!
I wish there was an option that wasn't plastic. That doesn't mean it has to be leather, just not plastic.
**insert OMG it's happening Office gif** loving the barefoot revolution! FREE THE TOES!!!
hello, would you say that the boulder summit waterproof boot would be good for a job? I work at in n out and have been wanting to switch to a zero drop wide toe box work boot because there are days when I am bending over a grill for six hours straight and my back is hurting by the end of the day. the requirements are that they have to be non-slip. are these non slip? also do you think these could hold up to the job, because my work boots go through a lot; hot melting cheese drips on them, spread, i step on a lot of food, they are constantly getting wet if i work a closing shift and have to wash the dishes by hand. please let me know what you think or what would you think would be a good barefoot work shoe out of your reviews
@@skippersam2760 I think the Kourt Grip might suit you better. I think the grip outsole is more suited to working in a restaurant environment than the Summit outsole. The Kourt is still full grain leather, still zero drop, I bet the toe box feels a little wider too because there's no waterproof membrane, and it's much more in line with the sneakers I see employees at in n out wearing. If you're really looking for a boot though, the Summit isn't a terrible option at all, I think it would work.
Have used Altra Escalante for years, for running and work as hairdresser, helped me treat/cure Morton's Neuroma. They're my main shoe. Don't want to be without them. But absolutely agree with your suggestions for an alternate model Escalante.
How is the thermal insulation of the patrol lite? Is it good enough for below or around freezing temperatures? Or would you recommend the patrol winter for those situations? I am hesitating because you mentioned the patrol winter are problematic when you want to keep them on inside at home or in shops.
@@williamwallace410 I think with the right socks you would be fine at those temperatures. They definitely aren’t “insulated” in any way though
Love the nostalgic looks as well as the black and gum colorway.
They seal the seams on the Winter, so I don't get why they don't do it for the Lite. I don't think it even needs a membrane. The material is already water repellent, so if they just seal the seams it should be mostly waterproof. As for the fake leather, it kinda ruins all the Patrols. Imagine if they made them in Nubuck. They'd literally be barefoot Timberlands. I get that it's a vegan company, but they could still use recycled leather that would go to waste otherwise. Freet does it, they can too. The boots are already as expensive as real leather, so it would only be fair that we get non plastic versions too. I'm sure some hardcore Vegans would be offended even by recycled leather, but that's nothing compared to the new audience they will attract. Most people don't wanna pay top dollar for plastic. Also I agree they could make a version with bigger lugs, to get more of that Timberland look. The sole can remain flexible even with bigger lugs, as we've seen from Vivo ESC models. They seem to be paying attention to your feedback, so fingers crossed. Btw I wish you had tested the waterproofing a bit more and showed us, so we could get an idea of what they can and can't do.
I bet they'd keep water out even if submerged for an ok amount of time, with no gusset you just wouldn't be able to go very deep. The day I was out filming was really wet, and my feet stayed dry going through puddles, through tall wet grass, and walking on the soggy lake shore, so they have been decently water resistant
@@sonsofsever Oh I didn't realize they don't even have a gusset. WHY?! I bet with a gusset and seamed seals they'll be really waterproof.
I was actually wearing my grey patrol lites last night. My only complaint is that I find myself not wearing them as often because it's hard to get in and out of them because of the laces/eyelids holes. I've heard from another youtuber that the patrol winter is easier because all the eyelid holes have metal caps, whereas the lites they took almost all of them out. I actually don't notice mine making that squeaky sound like your's. Maybe as a new pair they did?
Thanks for the review. I am looking to transition from Altra to Lems. Looks like Primal Zen has the highest stack height? That’s what I need for an easy transition. I have Morton’s neuroma / foot pain. I am hoping the Lems will be a good shoe. Altra - while I need the cushioning for sure - seems to be a little bit too much for me. I feel a little wobbly.
@@Audrey.17 I think Lems is the perfect step down from Altra. The Primal Zen doesn't have the highest stack height no, some shoes like the Chillum Grip have a little more, but the Zen would still be great option for you in our opinion, it's very comfortable
@@sonsofsever Thanks for the reply. I like how you guys said it is an everyday shoe. I would be wearing it for work. I work in a nursing home as an OT. So some walking on tile and lots of sitting during documentation.
I think you two would love the Invo8 bare xf for running and lifting. Low stack height but the boomerang footbed gives you some squish
Looks like that outsole pattern was "inspired" by the Jim Green Rose Anvil outsole.
The only problem with that theory is this boot came out way before that one did
I love you guys ❤️🙏🏽
This is crazzzyyyyy as a person who loves the widest toebox possible I don’t know any person that need this but enjoy it ❤ that guy׳s foot was amazing. 🦶 Edit: I’m convinced 😅 I always go up a size in barefoot shoes (ehm ehm Vivo) because they are not wide enough, now I can a have a boot that is actually my length and still I can fully splay my toes 🦶
Great video! Thank you so very much, sir. Regards from Perú.
No US foot sizes on your chart ?
@@JHC63 we don’t have a chart haha who’s chart?
do you think these shoes have a good ground feel? which i know these have a little thicker sole
Yeah they have plenty of ground feel in my opinion. Not as much as Splays original lineup, but it's still a lot.
Just got these for Xmas. Live that they are grounded but wanted barefoot waterproof. Finding a good hiking waterproof ones seems tough.
Just ordered some and gonna get elastic laces, like I do on most barefoot shoes. They’ll be way easy to get on.
I wouldn't say the bar was set low. Very impressive your mom finished the run!
Can you cut the laces and insert your own?
@@bangbangcabrera if you wanted to. Also, it comes with extra bungee laces and extra normal laces
@sonsofsever got it, thank you!
i love my lems!
Traction pattern??The outer sole is a nightmare, slippery as hell unless you walk on a rough asphalt or dry terrain.A really great upper platform, definately waterproof and comfy, simply can not perform in rainy days in the city, because the out sole forces your feet in to ice scating adventures...
@@Shaithis-rb4br I’m a delivery driver. I wore these for probably two or three weeks in a row. One week was nothing but rain. I had no issues with this. Switched to two other boots that were significantly more slippery. This guy was a champ for me in the wet slippery conditions that week
You guys are cool. These shoes you bought remind me of Saucony jazz.
My foot width is 4.5" (length 11.2"), so I don't think I'll fit in these without rubbing.
A Splay 101 High Top would be amazing for downhill skateboarding. It's all leather! Either a 101 High Top or an all-leather Rev High Top would work great. Sad they don't have one that suits my needs yet. Kinda wanna buy from Splay.
Comments like yours are part of what let's them know what the market wants! And we totally agree, either a high top 101 or a leather Rev is definitely needed
Love these vids
Got two pairs. Love 'm to bits!
Best channel on UA-cam! Thanks for sharing.
1 blister in a totally brand spanking new pair of shoes running a half marathon = that's pretty amazing.
Wasn't even a full blown blister either haha. They are quite the departure from the Altras we've been running in all summer long, but there's a lot of good things about them!
@sonsofsever Wow, not even a real blister. Nice. Is the upper as supple/flexible as other runnings shoes too? The retro shape appears stiff-ish to me, but it definitely could just be the appearance.
@@nickamarit the upper material is a little stiffer than today's modern recycled PET and such yes, but it hasn't bothered me at all. They were going for full-on classic runner with the nylon and suede
@@sonsofsever Ahhh, nice to know. Thanks man.
I don't care what naysayers say, the fact that you can throw on barefoot shoes and go hard like this with minimal damage says a ton. I've never been as comfortable in conventional shoes as I've been in any of mine, right out of the box. Love that you guys are making memories with Mama like this every year, so special, thank you for sharing it. Happy Holidays boys, thank you for a very informative year. The content is top notch and I hope the affiliates come out to play in 2025 and you need to buy larger homes to display your wall of boxes, haha.
We appreciate your comments Gman!
Just discovered your channel from your Lems review video. God bless you guys
Been waiting for this review so I could decide if I wanted these
@@justinperkins7744 we'll get a full one out too after we've put more miles on them. I've got about 20 miles on mine, and so far I think they're great for short quick runs. Pretty versatile too, I took them with me on an overnight work trip and loved being able to wear them out casually, but then take them on a run too
Do the paddles float?
@@mikeb3535 never fully tried it out, I've dropped one before and they definitely don't just immediately sink, just not sure how long before they would start sinking, if they do at all
What scared me off from buying these was several reviews from guys around my height 6' saying that the pants were a little short on them. In fact, in your video they seem the same. Your socks can be seen as the pants don't come down far enough. Maybe that doesn't bother you guys or other people , but it put me off.
@@jordanschneider1077 yeah I think that's our preferred cut of pant honestly. A big part of that is that we review a lot of shoes and they're easier to see and film if the pants are cut a bit higher lol
Pants on dude with yellow trainers on?? 😂
What's funny about pants? Genuinely confused haha
@@Beariam24 sorry! Are you just asking what pants they are? Path Projects Killam PX, easily my favorite running pants
@@sonsofsever yeah just asking. Sorry for the confusion 👍🏼
@@Beariam24 lol all good, that's on me for sure!
I really wanted to get some Altras for my wife, but unfortunately the brand don't carry her size (35.5 EU) at all. Probably gonna go with Xeros instead, cuz they carry her size.
The Escalante Racer 2 is so much better. Less weight, more breathable, and lower stack
@@micdavey yeah I'm not sure if the new Racer had released yet when we asked for these, otherwise we probably would have gone for them!
So the Escalante and Via Olympus are their only road shoes based on the original fit. The lone peak and Olympus are their trail shoes with that fit too. I can't use any of their other shoes anymore due to how narrow they are and the rubbing round my feet. It's very disappointing as the original foot shape is so good
They are way too squishy, for me, underfoot. I don't really care about the stack height, but I want zero rebound from a mid/insole. Their Solstice has a much firmer midsole but even that is at least 10x squishier than I prefer, lol. Thanks for the video, as always, hope you have a good holiday season.
Check out Flux
We got the Flux trail runner recently. Without spoiling it too much before the review, I'm gonna stick with Altra for now lol
@sonsofsever I personally love them. I own all versions and am quite happy.
@@millone3393 my biggest gripe is the toe rocker, it's nuts compared to any other runner I've ever worn. I land way too far forward on my forefoot for that shoe to work for me, it feels super weird
@sonsofsever Hmmm. Interesting. Looking forward to the review. If they are sized 11.5, send them this way, lol.
@@millone3393 lol! Size 9, otherwise I would have been game
The "anvil" sole isn't that good. It wears quite fast...I wish they'd stop calling it barefoot because its not. Its a Zero Drop...Zero Drop and barefoot are two different things. I love zero drop because it puts pressure on the foot in a balanced way that doesn't stress the knees backs and hip, the arches of the foot do its job. The plastic toe puff and heel stiffener is crap...they ought to just use leather even though it would be more expensive. The heel rub issue is the celastic material, it doesn't really bend like leather. It will always be firm and plastic like, it can cause heel blisters. I like the "barefoot" shoes because they are a hybird/zero drop, not quite boot, not quite sneaker but wear and look like a sneaker. Its a damn shame they don't use thicker leather. The inconsistency in leathers is apparent, but its a 200$ product...going into the PNW world of course its more durable but not necessarily better. I think the Jim Green zero drop boot/shoe is one of the better made ones, although the double row of stitching is bad...I mean whats the point in running two rows of stitches if your sewing machine is going to puncture already used holes? The stitching detail sucks on the stitchdown, but they did leave enough room for 1-2 re-soles which is good. I'd like to see them use leather on the barefoot boots for the heel counter, just make it a soft heel counter. Having a hard piece of plastic in the heel provides support at the expense of comfort.
