Bad wording - I feel sure that's not factory - which the component and retrofit install both imply. The others are the silver clad mallories like I have seen in others; I feel those are safe to assume are factory.

    These and Kustom amps were popular back in the 70’s because they were cheap and plentiful, and built pretty poorly….

    • @winterturtle5764
      @winterturtle5764 6 днів тому

      @petedazer3381 I respectfully but 100% totally disagree. Kustom were super well built early solid state. They're as indestructible as USA Peavy solid states. They were also on similar pricing levels to the Fender and other too end professional amps. Plush had knock off circuits and copy looks sure. They also had huge Marantz designed transformers. Eyelet construction and are again here pretty indestructible. Quiet and reliable, servicible amps. Earth a little less so, they are point to point with generally good components used but are not as nice a design overall. The naugahyde on both is vulnerable to rips so NGL a lot of the hard working ones look really roached. If we wanna talk quality, let's discuss all the printed circuit board amps that maintain a mass appeal price point in today's world with small transformers and board mount tube sockets. =)

      @jerrywatt6813 there's legend but not much documentation. Best I can gather some of the designs and some of the people were consistent between the two. Evidently Plush went belly up and some time later Earth popped up to carry on =)

    The high capacitance (ie th e 150uF reading 177uF) should be a warning as it indicates high leakage. The tester thinks it's still charging but it's leaking DC. A high voltage cap test with a 100mR or 1R resistor to test the leakage would show the leakage. Great job.

I have a G-2000 that's awesome sounding but the reverb is weak and the trem strength is also weak. I need to get better versed and see of I have some DC leaking and throwing things off. All the easy normal stuff is checked and good!

  • @goodun2974

    Apparently the designers never read the memo about turning transformers at right angles to each other so you don't have cross coupling of magnetic fields....

  • @goodun2974
    @goodun2974 17 днів тому

    The inductive surge at turn on can often exceed the 1KV peak inverse voltage of ordinary diodes, which is why you often see two or three of them wired togther in series. On a high-power amp like this I would have used 2 1N5408 diodes in series on each leg of the power transformer secondary. The blackened leads on the original diodes is due to the plating which is probably silver or a silver alloy. I haven't seen it to be problematic for diodes, but in older plastic- body transistors, that oxidation product can creep right up into the plastic case and cause the transistor to become intermittent and noisy.

    • @nickk6109
      @nickk6109 16 днів тому

      An appropriate spec'd MOV can also be used used, when the inductive spike goes above it provides a path to short the spike. It also protects for spikes like lightning strikes etc.

    Hi, nice video I'm learning how to replace the pickups on my LARRY CARLTON H7V Vintage Sunburst that mounts the P90s, I've already disassembled everything but I noticed that the neck pickup is mounted the opposite way to the bridge one, that is, not the wire facing upwards while the bridge pickup has the wire facing downwards, seen the guitar as if I were playing it, that is, from above is it normal? Don't you have the famous nasal effect?

    • @winterturtle5764
      @winterturtle5764 18 днів тому

      @Moreno280161 if I were to hazard a guess (I don't know this specific model) I would imagine they have both pickups wound the same... but flipping one it probably cancels some of the hum when using both at the same time. Similar effect to the middle and neck pickup on a strat. The middle is reverse wound reverse polarity. In your shoes I would like assume they did this intentionally and reassemble as I found them. On the other hand you can test and see what your ear likes better!

      Eager to see the video #3. I just got done doing a full service look over on a silver G2000, and currently cleaning up my first go over my own g2000. Replaced a bunch of caps and cap can. Came to notice the prior owner had upgraded the choke and filter setup quite drastically from stock and moved a few things around. He installed the bigger newer choke at 90degrees turn between the two transformers and moved closer to the face side extended the leads and some how made use of the secondary portion of the "choke" he used toward the input of the signal section in what looks like an effort to quiet the signal coming in and or increase the impedance as well there still figuring it out. Looks like at least an 8henry unit and it Def had a lot less sag than most tube amps w/ SS rectifiers. Any who hope it all worked out and sounds better.

    I had the same problem with my 91 W350. After about 15 years of good service, it started over charging, burning out voltage regulators a couple a year, and alternators too. None of the forums had the answer, but it’s a common complaint. After years of unsuccessful attempts to fix it, I just learned to live with it. I had to replace the multifunction switch in the column, the high/low beam part failed, and I also replaced the start/run switch in the column at the same time. As a result, I was able to switch my headlights between high and low, but as a bonus, my pulse wipers once again worked as they should, and my charging system has been rock steady at 14.2 volts for years now! Contrary to the Forums, not every problem can be traced to bad grounds. Since I replaced two things, I can’t say which cured the charging problem, but since your truck doesn’t have a multi function switch, I’d look at the ignition switch.

    Need to pull my 91 yj cluster out, and try this. As the only thing that works properly is the clock. Fuel gauge reads accurately, until you turn the engine on, then it jumps up 1/4 tank higher. The oil pressure, engine temp do nothing, and the voltmeter needle constantly vibrates at +/- 14 volts.

      Worth checking. An open circuit (take the connector off the sender) on fuel or temp or oil pressure should peg the gauge at 0. Shorting the removed connector to a good ground should peg the gauge at top of range. If not then there is a problem somewhere in the circuit that needs solving. You can also check senders to see of their resistance is changing. For example ohms on oil sender to ground with motor off then compare to reading with motor on.

The shutter wheel makes and breaks the magnetic field to the electronic reed switch. do to the square wave pattern as the electronics age the they break down causing random misfires. Great video. Only way to prove it is with a digital storage scope. Taking samples of the waveform. Or throw a brand new distributor in it as the special press tooling to pull and push the distributor gear back on is almost impossible to find. Mushrooming the ends of the shaft happen. Get busy with a new dizzy. Be sure to set the engine to 10 degrees before tdc with the rotor pointing to the number 1 spark plug wire. Usually the shutter wheel gap will align at the pip sensor at that position. Make sure the oil pump drive shaft did not pull out of the oil pump. If you look down the hole it should be centered not wedged to the side. On first start up. Watch the oil pressure gauge or light.

    Same problem on a 83 D150. Ran independent grounds and a direct 12 volt feed. Was told its caused by the brushes in the alternator.
