My dad worked at that roundhouse and for the railroad for 37yrs. He was there when it was CN&W and later switched to DM&E. He was a mechanic there and made foreman once or twice. In the early 80's dad would often go on the road and repair trains in Souix City IA, Watertown SD, and Council Bluffs. The depot in Watertown SD has been turned into a historical monument. Last summer, they demolished the little solid brick depot building in Huron to build a Dollar General. :( My Dad said he one time managed to dump a train into the pit of that turntable of the Huron roundhouse. They used to dump waste oil into a small pit in the backyard facing Ravine Lake. Was like a oil pond. They would sit outside on warm weather days at lunch and watch flying birds see their reflection in the oil pond and dive in never to be seen again. Lol. The EPA came in and they had a big to reclaim all the decades of oil rhat was dumpes there. The Roundhouse doesn't use it anymore but it still has all its original steam heat. My great uncle also retired from the CN&W roundhouse shop in Huron. Him and my father had a short period where they worked together. My father has witnessed or had many friends die in accidents during his time. Its actually pretty surprising how often it happened. About every 5 years someone would get crushed, run over or fall or be killed while on the rails in a train. A personal friend of mine joined up as a engineer driving trains. His first week on the job he drove his train into a car crossing the blind road at the grain elevator there in Iriquois,SD. Nobody died but it shook him up good. They closed that road along the elevator. The curve at Manchester, SD is site of many derailments.

I hope I'm not the only one who thinks EMD's old horsepower coding scheme was stupid (e.g., "S" for "six hundred", "N" for "nine hundred"). This creates ambiguities; for example, "S" could just as well have meant "seven hundred". And just as bad, you can't compare two horsepowers just by their relative position in the alphabet. Ugh.

Not all of these series have the same exact horsepower ratings... The GP60 & SD60 series are 3,800 HP with the 710-G3A's.The standard cabbed SD70's were 4,000 HP but the SD70I's,SD70M's,SD70MAC's,and SD70ACE's are actually 4,300 HP and all units use 710-G3B's.The SD75I's & SD75M's are 4,500 HP with the 710-G3C's.Obviously there also was the SD9043MAC convertibles which used 710-G3B's. ATSF ordered 51 SD75M's but 25 of the units became apart of BNSF's roster because those weren't delivered before the merge.26 SD75I's are in the BNSF roster.Canadian National owns 173 SD75I's which were suppose to become SD75ACC rebuilds last year.ONRR only got 5 SD75I's and only have 4 units because one was totaled from a derailment.

Thanks for the heads up! School was canceled today, so I had time to catch the movement, which occurred at 9:15. I have also notice the lack of daytime traffic over the last few months. This is why I haven't made an RCP&E video in a while. I don't think I caught a single train in January or February. Although there was a pair of CSX AC4400CWM's sitting at the Brookings terminal one January morning. I was on my way to school, so I didn't have time in investigate the matter, but I stopped to get a good look at them. Finally, this last week I have been lucky enough to catch two afternoon freights blowing through town. I will probably make a BARA video for Jan/Feb/Mar next week to combine what little footage I have collected. In other news, I noticed that two more G&W locomotives have been added to the list of RCP&E owned/operated engines on its railroadfan.com page. BPRR 2001 and MMRR 2057 are both considered to be out-of-service. I have a feeling these are just more part units to add to RCP&E's collection. I think I'll head to Huron in the next few weeks to investigate as soon as the weather clears up. Best wishes and happy train spotting!

I acquired a house somewhat near train tracks about 3 months ago. I haven't been bothered by the 5-10 trains that pass each day, and I've seen trains stopped on the tracks for upwards of 3 days before moving along. But for the past 24 hours I've been hearing a strange noise on the distance - a kind of undulating pulsation sound. It last about 10 seconds, stops for about a minute, then another 10 seconds of the noise, silent for a minute - it's been like this non-stop and it's been forcing me crazy trying to figure out what it is. Thinking it might be a train stopped further down the canyon that I can't see, I've been googling train noises. Found this vid and the sound at 2:50 is exactly what I'm hearing. But it's 10 seconds on, a minute off, no -stop. What is it? Is that normal for that noise to sound in that pattern on an idling train?
