Hey My name is Charles. I have been a pilot since 2005, and that was one of my fondest memories. I have a three year old daughter that enjoys flying with me. Hopefully she will enjoy taking the controls some day.
My channel will be mainly aviation based content, but as you can see I’m an outdoor person and enjoy running a chainsaw. I’m just getting into milling and hope to have some cool videos showing me slabbing up some lumber.
I’ve had my Mooney since 2017. N201NU has been apart of our family and allowed us to do things we never would have been able to do. Part of The Bearded Mooney media TBMmedia.net

Thank you Charles for making this video, very helpful.
My pleasure
Just wondering why you wouldn't use the modern Radcolube MIL-PRF-87257C fluid? MIL-H-5606 hasn't been in vogue since the Korean War. It was replaced due to too many fires
Hey Gary, good point but there are two reasons. One this video is purely for showing how to maintain the brake fluid no matter what fluid you have in the reservoir. It’s applicable if you have 87257c or 5606. And second have you ever dealt with Mooney brakes? I don’t want to have to bleed them if I don’t have to. I had no leaks in my system so no concerns of fire too. Hope you enjoyed the video other than that.
Nice
Getting ready to buy one myself. You can't hardly find any videos of anyone shooting this bad boy.
Hey Justin did you end up getting one? I still love mine.
How do YOU refill the hydraulic flaps on a 65 Mooney ?
I kept the battery charged because my 201 had electric flaps:) I’m guessing Mooneys with hydraulic flaps have a similar reservoir like the brakes someplace. I would keep them topped off in a similar way. Check out Mooneyspace.com for additional info for mooneys.
Any issues with the gun?
I take the lower cowling of my J off and on with little problems by sliding my Craftsman roll away stool under the cowling, and raising it up to rest the cowling down on it and roll it out, then back in. People seem intimidated by taking the lower cowling off? As you have shown it's not that big of a deal. Safe flying!
4:22 is the spot where I have been for over two years. You should fly by again to see how big the holes are now.
I’ll have to do that!
I would love to get the measurements and the size of the PVC pipe that you used for the channel to drain the filter!
22 inch machine jo hai iska kya rate hai steel ki
Kya rate hai iska
A comment & question. In automobiles, it's usually not recommended to add fluid as it provides an indicator for pad wear or leak somewhere. Is there a similar concern with airplanes?
Sure there is, if I’m filling the reservoir once a month I have a problem. This video highlights the procedure in checking your fluids to make sure you don’t have a problem. On my 201, I had a small leak on the pilot side caliper. At every annual I would clean it up and check the fluid and add about a half an inch of a straw worth of fluid as well.
Charles. I just ordered a cover for my plane today. Just found your video. GREAT job!. I know you are missing your plane. Hope to see you son.
my dream chainsaw🙏
It is definitely a great saw.
Tomorrow I'm buying an R2MI, the only one I could find available anywhere after an exhaustive search. I'm pretty damn excited
You’ll love it. If it was lighter it would be my best gun, but still without a doubt it’s the funnest gun I have!!!!
@Charles McKenna I definitely plan to get a Blue Force Gear M240 or M249 sling and probably a barrett carry handle for it too. Just one of my considerations
@@lukelacross190 let me know what handle you get and how you attach it. I would love one on mine as well. It’s been hard finding any accessories for it since it’s kind of an orphan…
@Charles McKenna in a weird twist, I actually bought a 29" barrel M82. Now I don't have to worry about a handle but I couldn't find any during my research that woukd work. There were some on Amazon but they weren't nearly as sturdy it seems
@@lukelacross190 that’s cool, you’ll love the 82. While I was sighting my R2mi my buddy was there with his 82. Bad ass gun!!!! Send me a clip when you are sending rounds down range…

Nice panel for a J model. You should give us a tour sometime.
I’m working on an introduction video right now. I’ve been sick the last few days and got behind. She is fully electric and a great cross country IMC capable plane. I love her:)
Such a sweet freakin saw! I have two in my collection
I do love it!!!
Just bought mine today.
Can you please show how you made that tool for the filter with measurements? I have the exact same model. Thank you
Will do, hope you enjoyed the video.
3:55 you are flying almost directly over PFP or at least where it used to be the Plutonium Finishing Plant was finished with demolition in late 2019, 231-Z is in the same area which is the building that came before PFP was actually operational it was the final stop for Plutonium at the Hanford site during the war years with PFP taking over in 1949. 5:33 is FFTF or fast flux test facility a liquid sodium cooled fast neutron reactor. 3:53 the large brown square off to the right is ERDF, environmental restoration disposal facility it is a special landfill for nuclear waste.

The first starts the hardest. Since Ive been running it for the last year I never need to and plan on putting a plug in it so it never leaks.
Iv had a chainsaw mill for over a year and iv enjoyed making some nice slabs. Dad recently bought a band saw mill so we will enjoy that once the weather smartens up. 🤙🏼
Yeah I love my 880 for milling. But a band saw is in the future for sure!!

I work there. thanks it was cool to see it from the air. That is usually a no fly zone how did you get permission to fly over?
Glad you enjoyed the video. The airspace over Hanford is not restricted. I’ve been flying over it the last 7-8 years and it’s been that way. I gather from other pilots they lifted it about 10 years ago. They ask to fly above 1,800 msl and I was flying at 2,200 but I could have flown lower than the 1,800’. I fly into Richland about every other month. If you’re interested in a flight around there let me know.
@@charlesmckenna6164 how is it possible to fly lower than 1,800 there? I was contemplating flying my paramotor on the north eastern portion above the bluffs where the sand dunes are, but it's within the NSA. Is there a way to get around this restriction?
@@StephenMartin001 hey Stephen, if you look at the sectional it says pilots are requested, not required. So legally you can fly lower. I can’t post a picture of the sectional on here. I was flying at 2,200 just to be less obnoxious. But I doubt they would even notice you there.
Wonderful video. I worked out there for many years and got to see several plants. It is almost sad to see the "skeletons" of what was. The threats were kept at bay because of what went on out there. I learned many things about radiation - the hazards and precautions. When my wife went for radiation treatments, we weren't scared. It is sad to look at these places and seeing what they used to be. They are more safe now, though. Hazardous materials have been stabilized or removed. Thanks, again.
I couldn’t agree more! Thank you for your kind words and glad you enjoyed the video. There is definitely a lot of history there!!!
Nice flight. It was opened in 1941. Umatilla Chemical Depot is inactive. It use to house the military’s mustard, and other warfare chemicals. They had built a facility to destroy the chemicals. They finished destroying the chemicals around 2011. They then demolished the plant. All the igloos have been cleaned. The national guard uses the area now for training.
Thank you, and thanks for the added info. Hope you enjoyed the video. I have a few friends that work and train there. I’ve always thought it was weird they keep the restricted airspace up around it even though all the munitions are gone.
@@charlesmckenna6164 yea no problem, a friend I work with is a pilot and also a broker and so I have learned lots in a few months. Will take a look at your other videos. Crater lake had nice views. I am around Lewiston Idaho, nice flight area up this way if you get bored. Look into the hells canyon area.
@@dannyboydkj7bpn the Snake would be a great flight. The editing and some of the video was not very good on the actual Crater Lake leg. But I’m learning..:) Thanks for checking out the channel!!! I’ve been into Lewiston once but always up for returning.

The building at 3:51 is 202-S commonly referred to as REDOX. The long rectangular building to the north of REDOX is 221-U “U Plant”. The large long rectangular building @ 3:57 is 221-T “T Plant”. A very historic facility. It is the building that chemically extracted the plutonium for the Nagasaki bomb code named Fat Man. B Reactor shows up @ 4:07. The first full scale nuclear facility in the world. K West Reactor is at 4:22. K East reactor is shown as well. It has been cocooned. The Hanford workhorse shows up at 4:49. It is the 202-A building commonly known as PUREX. It was a plutonium/uranium extraction facility and operated longer than any of the other chemical extraction facilities. At 4:57 you pass the construction site for the low/high level vitrification facilities. At 5:08 you start a flyby of the only power generating nuclear reactor in the NW. Originally designated WNP-2. It is currently run by Energy Northwest.
Jason,,, you’re awesome! I will use all of those in my time stamps! Lots of history in a small area
the steam plumes are actually not part of the hanford project that is the nuclear power plant run by energy northwest.
So that kind of means my Thumbnail is misleading :( That’s a fail on my part. Thanks for the info!!!
That’s correct. The Columbia Generating Station run by Energy Northwest is strictly for power generation and is not associated with nuclear weapons production at Hanford. Energy Northwest simply leased the property to build the plant back when they were called WPPSS. Washington Public Power Supply System.
@@charlesmckenna6164 it's a very very common mistake. The hanford site is roughly the size of the state of Rhode island and most features that still exist are miles apart. You did catch the Central plateau including the Vitrification plant and part of the tank farms just before the steam plumes. It's was an interesting watch.
@@margaretsmoot4061 it’s all good. I love learning! Thank you...
Did lots of flooring work there. Our school mascot was a nuclear mushroom cloud 🤣. There's all kinds of stuff buried there including a train. Used to have missile site on mountain to south west of site.
Bet there are a lot of crazy things that’s gone on there :)
Hanford Patrol handled security. Several (5 I think) Cadillac Gage APCs, helicopter (2 I think). Lots of special training stuff. APCs are (or were) now local law enforcement staged around county. After Army thought about checking into but flooring kept me busy
The large trench with the cylinders at 4:25 is the repository for reactors removed from subs and surface ships.
Thanks for the info!
Oh yeah
highly recommend it!!!!
Beautiful J model you have there. In the spirit of being helpful, I live in the Midwest and had no idea where the John Day Valley was located. Google helped me identity you are in Oregon. Maybe include that next time. Also having watched way too many hours of UA-cam flying videos and reading comments, expect to get mixed reviews on your background music. I'm a musician also but most aviators LOVE the sounds of flying. All of them. Startup, runup, takeoff, cruise, even shutdown. And if you can splice your headset into the mix to get the radio calls, even better. Thanks for sharing your Mooney with us!
Paul, thanks for the tips. I’m slowly getting the hang of editing. I’ve actually had the cameras for years but the editing of the flights is what held me back from doing anything with them. I’ve watched so many UA-cam videos of learning the art of getting the videos just right. Hopefully as the more I do it I’ll be able to incorporate all of the stages of flight into my clips. Any finer points I would love to hear them! I’m not the most artistic when it comes to seeing the whole picture. And in my last video I did had an intro I managed to put together with the beat of the music so hope good things are coming now that I see just how important that is to the viewer. If you’re ever out this way let me know!!!
Great video. Good info, and I appreciate the editing.
Thanks Charles - very useful video. I recently bought a M20J and this is really relevant. Cheers.
Great to hear! I will have quite a few more videos specific to the J so hope you get use out of all of them. Enjoy your J, I love mine!!!
See the flaps are still down on climbout ~2:50. When do you retract them? 1000'AGL?
My normal alt that I raise them is 400’. That take off was actually pretty sketchy. There was a lot of rotor winds off the mountains, helicopters on Bravo taxi way, and sheer winds. It was a slow climb I was trying to get as much lift as I could for as long as reasonable. Matt my buddy next to me is a pilot as well and we discussed it and thought we also might have got some tail wind from the helicopter. It took awhile before I felt comfortable climate Vy and not Vx pitching the nose down that far.
Thanks for another great video, Charles!
My pleasure! More are coming starting today.

Definitely more of a pain, I have a video of it coming up after I do some other tasks in the engine compartment. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy them.

You should fly up here and we could make a video of removing the cowling on your B....:)
thank you I've enjoyed making them. its been awhile but more are coming starting today...
Very nice,! Have you been able to control the tail camera from the cockpit?
I can from my phone. But with all the WiFi and Bluetooth I have going on in the cockpit it will get shut off or loose it’s connection and I can’t turn it back on. I’ve lost what I think was “Academy award winning footage ;)” because it wasn’t running when I thought it... so this flight I just turned it on and let it run.
@@charlesmckenna6164 yeah, same here. Makes it hard for 2+ hour flights, have to land and change batteries
Yep, a friend is working on a setup to mount an external battery pack with the camera. He makes it with a 3 D printer. He pretty much has it perfected for his Cirrus. I’m starting the planning for the Mooney. I’ll let you know when we get it made up.
