How To Do Marriage of Metal

This week’s new UA-cam video is How To Do Marriage of Metal. If you’re not familiar, this is a basic but challenging process in metalsmithing and jewelry-making. Beautiful results! I'd never heard of marriage of metal before, but saw similar pieces and had no idea how it was made... One thing I ask myself now is what about getting the cuts with a CNC router? Sounds like cheating but could be used for semi-manual craft I suppose? Thanks for sharing I really enjoy this channel, specially the Cool Tool series.

    • @JamesThurman
      @JamesThurman 29 днів тому

      Thanks so much for your encouragement and interest! I don't think using any CNC equipment would be "cheating"--there is still a lot of work to do that way (figuring out the cut radius/kerf, programming it to cut inside versus outside, figuring out how to hold down the sheet metal well, soldering, clean up, etc.). If you do it, I would love to see the results!

I had to loosen-turn tighten to get perfect concentricity due to the knurling, but once it was set it did work pretty well! Apparently proper adapters for this already exist.. Dividers really upped my jewelry game. A trick I discovered about making scribed lines more visible while sawing. I take a micro-fine Sharpy pen and run it along the bur created by the dividers. This lays black right in the grove without thickening the line. So much easier to see. If your touch is light the pen steers itself along the bur. I find this useful when laying out split ring shanks for sawing.

    Some good tips. But I'm puzzled. I thought that liver of sulfur does not work on fine silver because there is no copper present to oxidize and I have not been able to do so when I have tried to oxidize fine silver. But here you say depletion guilding is used in association with patina.

    • @JamesThurman
      @JamesThurman 3 місяці тому

      Different patinas work in different ways. Pure silver will darken when reacting with sulfur (like liver of sulfur). Copper will react with many different chemicals with many different results (sulfur, oxidizers, etc.). Sterling can be confusing because there is both copper and silver reacting with the patina. I hope that helps?

As metalsmiths and professors, we’ve been creating each individual tool graphic over the years to embellish our studios and handouts. Just for fun, we made this composite image and printed it on some work aprons for ourselves. We like it so much, we thought we would share it with everyone! You can even order one for yourself or as a gift: www.zazzle.com/store/jamesthurman
