    I am late to this party. After a few years with SASW 2i and 135mm lens I finally stepped up go a SA GTI, Redcat 51 and Asiair Plus. And now have finally decided to learn to guide and ordered a ZWO 120mm cam and 30mm scope. Found this video and it was a real eye opener with how to's and suggestions. Am chomping at the bit to get out for a session. Wanted to just tell you thanks for a great and informative video. 🤘 Hook Em Horns.

      I can not say for sure, because I do not have my EQ6R Pro any more. I sold it. and then purchase just the Tripod for the 5. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't fit the 6. They are pretty much the same tripod, except the boss sticking up is casted in the 5 and its a bolt on the 6.

    Very helpful!! Can i ask if it is possible to align the AM5 on the Skywatcher with a scope pointing north over the tripod leg as you have already indicated with the N on the tripod in your past usage? My current setup has the legs with north over the leg. Also with your EDGE set up do you use an OAG - i heard that harmonic mounts tend not to play nicely with such set ups due to their short exposure in the autoguider mode? Thanks again.

    • @bfgmetalworks
      @bfgmetalworks 16 днів тому

      I do use the scope pointing over the north over the tripod leg..And I do use a OAG with my Edge and my tracking is on point. anywhere from a .4 to .6. I use a counterweight just for stability and I put weights on the base of my tripod, and this setup runs perfectly !

      Thanks. However with all that extra weight on your skywatcher tripod that needs to be carried around, doesn’t that rather negate the benefits of the AM5N?

    It's absolutely awesome to see a metal man do astrophotography like myself. I am a custom ductwork sheetmetal fabricator/installer by day and an astrophotographer by night. most known astrophotographers are in the IT field. I think that says something about guys like us that are up at 530am for work and finishing our dark frames by 4am/shooting flat frames while the truck is warming up to leave to our day time profession. TOGA!!! CLEAR SKIES.

    I read online several reviews saying that the adaptor from the pier was designed to fit an EQ5 tripod, and that it was slightly too large diameter to fit the HEQ5 pro tripod. This obviously wasn’t your experience? Thanks, nice video

    According to ZWO the Skywatcher adapter plate is also compatible with the Celestron AVX tripod head. The AVX has a similar depression. I've seen the Astroblender youTube on his modification using a threaded rod. I find it funny you would think ZWO, a Chinese based company, would use all metric dimensions and parts. The AVX mount has a metric thread for the tripod rod but the AM5 uses a non metric thread in the base of the AM5. I have on my AVX a C8 (non HD). I use a Starizona reducer/corrector, Celetron OAG an ASI174mm for guiding and a ASI071MC for the main camera. A Mele Win11 miniPC with NINA runs everything. My OTA weighs close to 19lbs. I'll be interested in the guiding results you can achieve at the higher focal lengths. I read on CN some saying the AM5 isn't suitable on focal lengths greater than 900mm yet I read others having good consistent results with C8 and larger. Will you be able to achieve total RMS error below 1" with the AM5? I want to upgrade my AVX eventually as PHD2 guiding application always complains of the calibration. I'm still new at guiding and trying to figure out which parameters to adjust is frustrating. I've read most users report the AVX is not the best choice but I manage to collect light frames, mostly galaxies at the moment, and get the guiding to work adequately. Good luck in your astro come back. I just subscribed. Thanks

      Thank you for your comment.. I have imaged a few nights and all my guiding has been under 1". its been anywhere from .38 to .7 With the heavy duty tripod, the counterweight and I also add some weight to the tripod I have gotten some good results.I have seen those same comments on cloudy nights, and have seen screenshots of their perfect guiding. I have taken them as well. So far as a first time user of a SCT, I have been doing pretty well with it. I've been following the advice of many folks on Cloudy nights as to what has worked for them with their setups. Like I've said, I'm by no means a wizard at this hobby, and I've been doing it for just over 3 years. And what I do learn, I try to share as well.. Sometimes I may not be perfect at it.. but I try. I have learned from many other youtube channels, and It has inspired me to try and help others and give back some. Thank you for subscribing and thank you for your comment, I truly appreciate it. I just got an EdgeHD 8" and the first night out was short but I had great seeing. AM5, TC40, ASIAirPlus, 50mm guide scope w/ ASI120MM (yeah, I know) and I managed 0.49" for 1hr 21mins (balanced RA/DEC). What counterweight is that? I'm considering one even though I always put 12lbs in the sling under my TC40.

    • @bfgmetalworks
      @bfgmetalworks 4 місяці тому

      lol Yes on the 120mm, Thats good guiding with a 50 mm guide scope.. I use the Celestron OAG with the 174mm mini and i get about the same, maybe a little lower ( Not Much) The counter weight is home made, its about 6 lbs. I do have a couple of 11 lbs weights as well, but this little one works perfectly, plus I weigh down the tripod too.

    • @psuaero100
      @psuaero100 4 місяці тому

      @@bfgmetalworks Celestron OAG w/ 174MM is my long term plan. I thought I'd give the regular guide scope a try on the first night imaging. I haven't bought the OAG or the new camera yet either. I was pretty happy with the performance using the old guide scope from my refractors. I'll be honest... good seeing and Bode's Galaxy probably made the results better than I should expect. 😀

    Noticed some confusion during guiding setup. What you did first was calibration. That takes a few minutes as it steps through NSEW. Then it begins to guide. Because you calibrated, your guiding was quite good. And you lowered the gain appropriately. Multi star is automatic. It will pick the star it likes.

I charged everything, and it all Comunidad even 40 feet away through 2 walls. So I assume full power is pretty important. Just thought I'd let you guys know my experience. Good luck.

    I have an ASI AIR Plus. First.....get the 3.1 cable to the camera away from the antenae (this is per ZWO latest info). Next....connect with 2.4 G and not 5....2.4 isn't quite as fast but goes much further distance. I experimented with Station Mode and found that evidently when using that the speed of download is lower than connecting direct to ASI AIR wifi. I got more drop outs in Station Mode although I was pushing the connection distance for my home WIFI connection. An extender would probably help in that case. Final suggestion.....when slowing down or dropping connections, try rebooting the ASI AIR. Note that when you do this you will have to reset your password unless you are using the default 12345678. I found that a reboot and avoiding Station Mode made the connection very robust. I run my setup from inside my house and through a glass doorwall and about 40' distance. Also make sure you have the latest firmware update.

    Some people think that a higher gain antenna will give them the strongest signal and highest quality connection. This is true in some cases, but in certain applications too much gain can be a bad thing. The truth is, the answer to whether you need a higher or a lower gain antenna lies in your application. You want to focus all of the signal to direct it to a distant target, then the high gain antenna is definitely the best choice. High gain antennas need to be pointed in a preferred direction to send RF signal so that limited signal can be intensified in desired location. Antennas only divert, direct, or concentrate radio energy in some direction, they don’t create it. In my application I was able to go in my house with the stock antenna which was about 70 ft away, give or take and I had poor signal going in and out. You should of tried walking in another direction when having the blade antenna connected. Rf shoots off the blade sides on a 40 degrees lobe. You got worst signal with the 9db antenna because it only shoot out 25 degrees in both directions. The regular 2db antenna that came with the plus has a 360 degrees radius but not as far out. The blade antenna would be the best antenna in the application but you have to make sure it pointed in the right direction blade side in your direction. It's all about staying in the signal lobe of what direction your antenna application is shooting the RF.

    Thanks for the video! I tried the WiFi AR app on my iPhone and found it totally unusable. But I found the "Airport Utility" app much more user-friendly after setting WiFi scanner to "on" under iPhone settings. The stock antenna seems to work fine, increasing the signal next to the ASIAirplus from -71dBm to -26dBm. At 40 feet the signal was about -60dBm. I was able to control the ASIAirplus from my iPad from about 100 feet (not measured). So I think the WiFi of the Plus works pretty well.

    I am looking to get a filter wheel either the 7x2" or the 5x2". I also have a ASI 294MC pro, so i hope you can help me with some of my questions. Do i need to buy anything extra to contact the camera or can i do it with the accessory coming with the camera and the filter wheel? I saw they show a T2 tilter between the filter wheel and the camera on their website, do i really need it? Thanks in advance if you can help me with these questions!

      I don't think you'll need the Tilter.. What I used was the 5X2" for my 294MC Pro,, I put in a Black filter (for darks without having to put the cap on) I also Have the Optolong L-Pro Light pollution Filter, and then I had the Optolong L-Enhance filter. That left 2 spots open, One open spot for no filter at all, and another, for well anything else you might might to try. Now depending on your Scope and what the back focus would be, would determine the amount of spacers needed, That's really it. The filter wheel should come with the cable needed. I could have went with smaller size filters, but, I felt if I ever when with a different size camera, the 2 " filters would cover every size camera. Right now I have the 294MM Pro (Mono) with a 7X2" and its loaded filters..a whole other beast of learning curves....Hope that helps a little...

    Thanks for the tests. For me, it's a mix of distance and download speeds. Fact is, the asiair system is primarily, for me, a system that allows me to image from the comfort of my couch. I can't do that, 20 feet away from the scope and stay connected. I have to use a wifi extender.

    Isn't the 294mc an uncooled camera? How are you cooling yours?

    Did the AIR polar align thru the guide scope and camera? If so, is the guide pointed to the same location the main imager scope is pointed to?

    • @bfgmetalworks
      @bfgmetalworks Рік тому

      The polar align with the ASAIR goes thru the main scope and main camera. The guide camera and guide scope is pointed in the same direction, The purpose of the guide camera and scope is to track the stars, and send pulse adjustments to the mount for better tracking.

    Excellent video!!! I just got my ASIAIR PLUS and some other ZWO equipment. I'm brand new to astrophotography and still waiting for a clear night to get out and check it out. Keep the videos coming. Also I noticed that when you went into the telescope section prior to bring the scope to the home position the "Tracking" was turned off. Does that need to be off when I use the Guiding mode? Thanks.

      I'm always waiting for clear skys. I need them more on the weekends because I work during the week and its difficult to stay out late to image during the week. As far as your Guiding, that will automatically start once you have a target chosen and the mount has moved to that target, plate solved etc. Then I start my star guiding.. and thats it.. its tracking !!
