Breaking Free & Building Back: Rebuilding Trust in Sobriety
As an addict, you cause a lot of damage to your life and to the loved ones around you. When you get sober, mending those relationships and rebuilding trust isn't always easy.
It's not just the stuff you stole - like money, clothes, jewelry, etc. It's the time, the joy, the peace... stuff that you can't pay back.
Bob Springer is back in the studio with us, this time as an official member of the BKR crew, to talk from his perspective what that has been like for him as he started getting his life back together and worked to rebuild those relationships with family and friends.

Wish you would’ve expanded on the sugar and junk food thing. I was just talking to my partner the other day about how he was all irritable and came home from a shopping trip with a twelve pack and donuts and cookies along with the groceries he actually went for. It just seemed like an excessive amount from what he normally gets. Usually it’s like a six pack if he’s gonna buy alcohol unless we’re going camping or something, and either the cookies or the donuts but not both. I’ve been checking USPS every morning to see if there’s a package coming….

I did not realize until it was too late, and I felt obligated and was in love with him. Nothing has changed but that I've become bitter, don't care if he does or not. The manipulation, the lies, the gaslighting, the making me feel like I am the worse person in the world, my reality was all a lie. The only help he keep telling me that if I just not argue with him, he will stop. This has not happened. Am I wrong for not caring anymore. I wish I had the strength to put him out or make him hit bottom to change, instead I hit bottom.

If someone doesn't want to get help don't fight, criticise, or pontificate. Let them know you love them, stay positive and hopeful and most importantly lay down your boundaries and do not enable.

Thank you so much for helping people. Your podcasts are as much for the person suffering from substance abuse as it is for the family members. I am a Mom of a drug user here in Florida and we have been struggling with her drug problem for over 16 years, with her having a clean spell for about 6 years after she successfully completed drug court. Back then there were no podcasts. Now it's been about 7 years of her on again off again drug use, mainly on again, and your messages have helped me so very much to understand her struggle more. After she recently successfully completed another program I always play your podcasts for her as we are driving in the car and it has helped her and jeeps me settled. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! 💚💜

I’ve enjoyed listening to this, my heart breaks for them, that has the addiction, I’m like the rest of the moms. I don’t want my children or grandchildren living on the street, I don’t want them or cold. Us moms try’s to fix everything, but we can’t, it takes a long time for us to realize it. My daughter and my son , and two grandsons, and there’s many more, I’ve watched them, sometimes I get so sick seeing this young children, and dying so young, middle age, my God what’s go on In this live. God please HELP us, to hold on to your hand. That we put our faith in you, and you alone.

I love these podcasts. I work with folks in recovery and sometimes their loved ones too. I also have a 35 year old son who is an addict and alcoholic, currently living on the street or in a hotel from time to time. It's certainly easier for me to be a counsellor for others struggling than it is to deal with my own son. Thank you for the great practical insights. I'm trying to follow the great advice with my own child.

I found you recently and I am very thankful for your program tonight. You mentioned how the families of addicts can go through some terrible times because they're worried about their relative who is addicted. When you mentioned how your mother would put her hand on your back at night to see as if you were still breathing, that struck a chord with me. I 've been trying to find a way to not get sick when my daughter calls up, homeless, begging for food, finagling for all sorts of things, sleeping in a car with another addict......It's awful.I have been sending food to her via Instacart but I am thinking , after everyone I've listened to and/or spoken with about enabling, that I need to stop sending money and food. And this is something I hope you guys could address at one time: I haven't found anyone who has mentioned what young women go through on the streets...my girl has been assaulted and mugged and I can barely do anything at all after I hear from her or get a text on someone's cell......I am horrified and overwhelmed, So, if there's a chance you could discuss the serious problems female addicts go through, and if you can find any way to suggest how to protect them, oh, I'd be so grateful. Congratulations on your own recoveries....I wish you both all the best.

Still having trouble about enabling, the addict has no money. Does that mean leave the addict in the garage with no bathroom and no food? We have already replaced all the window when the temp got cold. We have rent dupkex, and the garage is not heated. I get angry when the addict has 10 people at 3:00 in the morning, l see people leave at 5:30 am. I lose my cool then. The addict has no place to go.as a human being what help is there. Is having a cell phone enabling. In Canada , the doc in ER will not treat with drug issues, not even the mental health problem. The addict almost died in the med field.l am so fed up with back and forth crap. My family all have trauma issues, l am not happy, how can l love myself. The addict does not care of the other family members.again what is enabling.?sorry , misspelt words, l have a rented duplex. I am in physical pain now emotional and mental, cause of drug use. I pretty much stilled my life and extreme anxiety. I can’t cope!

He has been smoking fentanyl in my home and now I have developed respiratory issues and am very sick. He constantly steals from me. He tries to manipulate me and begs to come home. He tells me he is in dangerous situations and being sexually assaulted in order for me to allow him back in the house. I almost died this last time in the hospital from whatever is ruining my lungs (the second hand fentanyl) so I cannot allow him back in. My heart is broken and I cry continually. Do you do private counseling ? Everything your talking about is exactly what Im going through with my 32 year old son who is addicted to alcohol, meth and weed. In 2019 he jumped off the Coronado Bridge in San Diego CA. He survived but ended up with a severe spinal cord injury and a crushed hand. After 4 months in the trauma unit he was released. I brought him home. And my life has been a living hell ever since. Countless rehabs where he just walks away. Numerous apartments left in shambles or calls from management not wanting him there anymore. We have sent him on so many fresh starts out of state out of pure desperation of wanting peace. Every single time within a couple weeks or maybe a month and then the cycle begins again. He uses my fear of him killing himself as a weapon to manipulate me. That part you said about when your phone rings is a trigger is so true for me too, but you gave me a few ideas about how to handle those situations that Im going to try. You gave me a different way to think about it like Im not giving him the opportunity to experience the consequences of his actions and grow. I like that. Any other advice I will surely appreciate. Thanks for giving me a place to vent. Best regards Janice

Not long after getting out of hospital she started pushing me away. She said i was like the police. The last month befire she passed i didnt talk to her so now i feel really guilty i didnt do more. I cant wrap my head around how nearly dying in January wasnt her rock bottom. She was in a coma for a week and then a further 3 weeks in hospital. I dont understand how this horrible drug took over her will to survive.

Today is July 4, 2024. I am a wife with an addict husband, who has been an addict for 15 years. He was sober for 2.7 years before he relapsed this past November. He went to rehab, got clean and relapsed again 6 months later. We have 3 children and because of his drinking, he’s pushed our to older children away. He has been verbally abusive since his relapse and now we are separated. I’ll spare you with the details, but this has devastated me. 4:58 really resonated with the situation in my life currently with my partner. Long story short…I needed to hear this. New subbie. Thank you.
