Dive into the Inner Space of Planet Ocean with ya buoy Pat!
One Hour Of Wild Pacific Coast Jellyfish Swimming | Relax, Study, Chill, Vibe | 4K + Ambient Music
Go with the flow and enjoy the mindfulness only the brainless can deliver: Here's one hour of wild Pacific Coast jellyfishes swimming, filmed from Monterey Bay to Alaska by ya buoy underwaterpat.
This next paragraph is here for UA-cam's keywording around relaxation videos, so bear with me. I made this one to help with election stress and provide a chill vibe similar to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Jellyfish Sea Nettle Cam, except with their wild counterparts swimming in the open ocean. Slap this sucker up as a video wallpaper to decorate your productivity life as we endlessly circle the drain of creative burnout while finding something to fill the void and help us relax the mind while we study, work, and try to sleep through the modern scyphozoan bellscape.
Featured in this video are
00:00 Pacific moon jellyfish (Aurelia labiata)
09:39 Brown sea nettles (Chrysaora fuscescens)
20:11 Purple-striped sea nettles (Chrysaora colorata)
33:58 Northern sea nettle (Chrysaora melanaster)
35:23 Egg-yolk jellyfish (Phacellophora camtschatica)
45:55 Pacific lion's mane jellyfish (Cyanea ferruginea)
(Note that it does not feature Aurelia aurita nor Cyanea capillata for tho they are included here for craven search optimizocean reasons, those are Atlantic species, and there is some taxonomic confusion over what species is what. These jellyfish were all filmed from Monterey Bay, California to South East Alaska via British Columbia.)
These are all (save one at the end!) Scyphozoan medusae in the phylum Cnidaria. I call them jellyfish because that's what people know them as, though there are many different types of gelatinous zooplankton that are *not* jellyfish as these are. They're not fish, yes, but "sea jellies" then includes siphonophores, salps, pteropods, larvaceans... It's not more precise, and people know the bloop bloop as "jellyfish" so that's what I'm using.

La Anchovy-da Loca! | DIVE VLOG - EP04 | Underwater Vlogging in Monterey Bay
Переглядів 25321 день тому
Dive into the anchovy mayhem that has been the Monterey Bay the last many months! A bajillion million sea lions, pelicans, gulls, seals (and off shore, the hordes of humpback whales) have all come in to feast on the infinite schools. In their wake, the anchovies have left a lot of poop that seems to be creating an anoxic zone, resulting in quite a few stressed out, passed out fishes-including a...

Pycno Patrol #1 | Midnight Diving In Monterey Bay
Переглядів 3886 місяців тому
It's been six years since Monterey Bay last had a *documented* sunflower starfish sighting, but recently, rumors have spread of a few Pycnopodia helianthoides bb's recruiting to Oregonian reefs and even here in my California backyard. So last week we went for a midnight dive at the Breakwater to see about finding us a Seasquatch.... Spoiler: None were found, but we did have a bioluminescent pla...

Ain't nothing better for the Kelp Kultists than a perfect viz SCUBA dive at good ol' Monterey Breakwater. The subtidal playing field just offshore of San Carlos Beach at the end of Cannery Row is the perhaps THE most-dove site in all of California-countless dive careers have been launched through the Coastguard Jetty's kelp forests and magical reefs. And though some may poopoo the Breakwater fo...

Yaaay love that you left the ambient ocean sounds~ I feel like I'm THERE ଳଳଳ
I am a diver up here in Puget sound what time of year does this event happen ? Summer... Or spring .. id love to drive down 2 states and film this ... Sea nettles are the coolest...
The nettle blooms nearshore have gotten a lot less frequent in the last decade. It used to be they were there every summer, but it’s been very hit and miss since. The shots in this video are mostly from 2017-2018 and we hadn’t had a good bloom in a couple years prior to that. Usually mid to late summer bring them in, and the last few years that has been mainly moons and egg yolks. Winter has a different cohort of the jellies, more salps and siphonophores and ctenophores generally.
my dream…. 🌊 🪼
It is relaxing indeed. Thanks for sharing!
thanks for checking it out
This is fantastic. Thank you so much for uploading this. Beautiful creatures
Thanks for tuning in! Jellies are my favorite thing to dive with out there, just truly otherworldly
@underwaterpat they've been my favorite since I was a child, how lucky to have seen them in the wild! Indeed they are otherworldly treasures of the ocean! I'll have to subscribe for more!
When at the mercy of current events, all you can do is go with the flow - Jellyfish Idiom
4x the octopuses I’ve seen there! I need to open my eyes 😂
They're stealthy little buddies! I feel like the bad viz makes them more bold to venture out
you sound like dart vader. what happen when you encounter a great white shark? how you get out the water fast enough ?
"Fluke, I am your wader!" I have never seen a great white on a scuba dive in my 15 years doing it-they just don't seem to like the bubbles/sounds we make. If you were to see one, there's not much to do except go the bottom and then head to shore. It's freeing in that way because why worry about the shark if there's nothing you can really do. Meanwhile the ocean itself is the most dangerous thing about the diving, always good to show a healthy respect for the sea!
You caught those dock shrimp in the middle of robbing a vault!
Picking up the Pandalus change!
Fantastic and stinky video! Octopus and sea puppy frenzy. Love it.
Thanks for checking it out!
Very lucky dive despite the visibility. iNaturalist community is doing great job indeed. Hopefully more and more divers will be using it in future. Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely, it's really missing out on a lot of subtidal observations and its amazing how responsive the community is-I hope it catches on with the bubble blowers!
So cool to see that bait ball
So fun to be surrounded like that
So cool! Glad you got to see em!!!
Thanks Eric!
Young Guns reference 0:48
And here I though it was just the Vine!
My gear is finally unstinkified from this dive
I dived there 2 days later. Couldn’t believe how stinky the gear got!
Gnarly right?! And there's the anchovy "cheeze" once they get bloated 🤢
This is just amazing. I'm a new diver, and I'm just in love with the kelp forests.
Nicely done!

Great meeting you this weekend!!
Very creative content! Keep it up!

MY INNER MONOLOGUE: (was it anyone else too!🫣) A sunfish! Wait. Do sunfish live in that type of area?…..where is this again? There was a seal so it’s probably cold. Man, it has such an interesting shape and I’m pretty sure it was flapping its fins like wings…but then again, maybe it’s a more common creature and I just can’t place it because it’s facing towards the camera and the depth perception is kinda skewed…Hmmmmm.. it might have helped if I put on my glasses.
Sunfish are my favorites, and between the five types-Mola mola "common", Mola tecta "hoodwinker", Mola alexandrini "bumphead", Masturus lanceloatus "sharptail" and Ranzania levis "slender" sunfishes-they are found all over the world from temperate to tropical waters. We have both Mola mola nd Mola tecta here in Monterey Bay, they come in every year as juveniles and adults to feed on jellies!
blessings Pat. Hope you're doing well. Are you located in the Monterey Bay Area. I would love to connect with you .
Heya! I am in Monterey, hit me up on DM @underwaterpat on Instagram
Hey Frond! 🌊🐚🐠 I've gotta say I Love this. I use it to force naps upon myself lol And even study. Thank you for the cold water magic!!! Listening to your rhythmic scuba breathing is so steadying and calming as swell.
Right on thanks for watching!
“Force naps on yourself is sooo funny” I use it to meditate! First, I wind down by staring at the swaying kelp and colors and light peeking through..then I close my eyes and zone out to the scuba bubbles and breath sound! This is a treat!
The right side is has more kelp but the left side the drop off is more abrupt and comes up quickly,my dive buddy and I hit 110’ very quickly and found the shelf as a staircase of rocks climbing up to around 80’ ,anemones are huge and fish are very big because the water is deeper and more open. Anywhere out there is a great dive, just read the water and weather before diving 👍
awesome critters! waiting for full video 🤙
thanks! should be able to get it in the next couple weeks
what was your rig setup
For the camera: Sony a1 with the nautical wwlb lens, a Sola 15k video light and two Backscatter hybrid flashes
Melibe's are my favorite!!
this is so nice! better than subnautica. I wish you well, underwaterpat!!!
I guess I will kelp coming back to this relaxing video
So freakin awesome, Pat! How do you decide what and what not to add as iNat observations? I assume just anything uncommon/rare that you come across?
Thanks B! The goal for me would eventually be to upload *all* the sightings from a dive, because we need that background “baseline” info just as much as the outlier stuff. I often have my exciting ones up first because that feels so gamified but I’m trying to get better at taking the time to upload all the stuff i can recognize or that could realistically be recognized later… You never know what’ll be the important to someone else!
SICK
So friggin cool dude!!
Thanks for watching!!
Wonderful and beautiful, how exciting to see a lovely large octomang <3
An inkredible moment indeed 🐙❤️❤️❤️
judging by the size of the eye of this octopus vs rest of its body it must have been a humongous one 😮 was it also that cold last time you saw one?
It was huge!! From the narcosis/excitement it was hard to gauge exactly how big but it reminded me of some of the bigger ones at the Aquarium, which were like 60lbs and over 12 feet across, but hard to know… Yes off Big Sur the water was like 47-48 that year with the upwelling, rough in my old wetsuit ahah
Have you ever tried licking the egg yolk?
Once you start you can’t stop, it ain’t over easy
GPOmg what a dive-thanks for watching fronds! Here's a link to all the species I tagged on iNaturalist from this dive: rb.gy/xgv8b5
Very cool! Didn’t know we had lions mane nudis out there! Will look for them next time.
Right on! Yes people have still been seeing them recently on the Metridium Field pipe, same as back when I filmed this.
Thank you for another great video - love your channel! It helps me to deal with the surface interval 😅. Really enjoy your insights into marine biology and photography. Keep going!
Hey right on thanks so much for watching!!
