The taboo and secret history of Emulation | Documentary on Emulation and Its Controversies
Emulation has always been a topic of debate and controversy. From the very inception of the concept, emulation sparked major conflicts between tech companies and the history of emulation has a magic side with software created by anonymous developers who seem to appear out of nowhere, taking everyone by surprise, and disappearing just as quickly, leaving behind waves of controversy. And this cycle has never stopped. Just a few weeks ago, we witnessed the conclusion of the six-year-long battle between Nintendo and the Yuzu emulator.
That’s the story of emulation: a story of innovation, driven by a handful of developers so talented that their feats, often achieved alone or in pairs, shook the video game industry to its core. Nintendo and Sony were pushed to the brink, forced to resort to weird maneuvers, lawsuits, and their influence to try and curb emulation - rarely with much success, at least legally. Here is the secret and untold history of emulation: how discreet and passionate developers put stars in the eyes of gamers, transforming an entire industry, and bringing emulation to the masses - while paying a steep price.
Made by Sakharu, voiced over by Brad Ziffer.

The strange and controversial birth of Pokémon Remakes | Doc' and Analysis Pokemon FireRed LeafGreen
Переглядів 21 тис.2 місяці тому
Few series have remakes that hold as much significance as the Pokémon series, they always bring innovations despite being remakes and they are eagerly anticipated by fans for years, sometimes even more so than new games, despite being released only every six years. And all of this was initiated by Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen, born out of a very specific need from Game Freak. The announcement an...
The Neo-Geo chronicles, the madness of an uncompromising console | A Complete Neo-Geo Documentary
Переглядів 426 тис.4 місяці тому
In the 80s and 90s, there was a slogan that you could find everywhere in all advertisements for every gaming console-it was 'arcade at home.' Unfortunately, that was rarely the case, even though some companies like Sega came close from time to time, we were far from having the same quality in home console games as in arcade halls, and that's understandable because these were two different world...
Mario Kart, 30 years of fun and madness | Documentary/Retrospective on the Mario Kart series
Переглядів 220 тис.6 місяців тому
The Mario Kart series is one of the most iconic of all time, one of the few series that is universal; we've all played Mario Kart no matter which episode it was, and we've all understood, controller in hand, that these games are special, that they have a different aura from others, that they make us feel a whole range of emotions in just a few seconds. Mario Kart games are very exotic and diffe...
The PlayStation 2 chronicles, redefine modern consoles | A PlayStation 2 Documentary
Переглядів 774 тис.8 місяців тому
In late '94, after a completely wild development journey, Sony releases the PlayStation in Japan, followed by launches in the United States and Europe a year later. Despite a rocky start, the console gains traction, benefiting from an extensive promotional campaign, the piracy rampant and, more importantly, Sega's numerous missteps with the Saturn and the lack of games on the Nintendo 64. Gradu...
The Legend of Zelda, the mysterious birth of a legendary saga | Documentary/Analysis Zelda 1 (NES)

The Legend of Zelda is not only the name of a legendary saga that has continuously reinvented itself throughout the ages, inspiring thousands of video games that followed its example but also the title of the first episode in the series, an enigmatic installment that emerged from a unique development process with the aim of creating an anti-Mario. This development was notably lengthy for its ti...
The Nintendo 64 chronicles, isolated and revolutionary | A Nintendo 64 Documentary
Переглядів 410 тис.Рік тому
The Nintendo 64 is one of the most legendary and revolutionary game consoles in history due to its atypical controller, the choice to stay on the cartridge format when everyone else has chosen the CD support, because of the exceptional games that came out on the console and because of its unusual history. Today we go back to the epic of the Nintendo 64, a console that has marked history so much...
Too bad the Neo-Geo was so expensive. I always wanted to own one. Nowadays there is no point in owning one with how the games evolved and emulation.
broski were gonna need you to back away from the mic a couple of feet no need for the disgusting saliva asmr
"My-uh-moto" is pretty horrendous. "Mayrio" is regional, I get that. "My-uh-moto" is just choosing to say something the wrong way. Come on, bro.
Sakharu is a great YT creator who explains topics thoroughly and cleary, and Brad's narration in english is a touch of class. Keep up the hood work.
Great content!
Truly a fantastic documentary! Great work
Hehe, “Mairioh”....
Neo Geo X was the worst handheld I have ever owned.
Blew my mind when you pointed out that the world feels more alive & real because the monsters dont all stop everything and chase you. It's a world, you could come and go. Someone else could but didnt. You're rising to a challenge, not the destined one.
Where on earth did you get info on accessory prices?? I worked this launch. The vertical stand was $19.99. not $60 Memory cards were not $60. They were $14.99
The Neo Geo was an amazing console but the price of the games was a major issue. Games were as much as 5/6 times the Megadrive and SNES. And the Megadrive had Sonic and the SNES Street Fighter 2. Even though the Neo Geo was a beast it became too one dimensional in the end just releasing too many beat em ups and I don't recall there being any 3D car games so to speak of.
Having grown up, in what I think is the golden era of video game consoles. From pac-man, NES genesis and PS. I can honestly say the N64 was my all time favorite.
I remember being a kid in the middle of boring ass Kansas thinking, whats up with all these systems coming out? Tried to rent a sega cd from blockbuster’s, but it was broken and never replaced. Probably the most bummed I ever was a kid.
There was a kid in our neighborhood whos dad was a electronics importer/ salesman and he had both Neo Geo and a 3DO. We were blown away playing those consoles. Its not like they were on every shelf in all the stores either, pretty rare to find one in a store in my town back in the day. For the time, they were definetly amazing.
I didn’t know anyone who had a Neo geo. No one. They were almost something fantastical.
This time in my life was awesome. When you're getting an N64 for Christmas the Christmas before that was PlayStation And the Christmas after Dreamcast. Xbox, seemed like every year a new console released.
Recently i got my first N64 (2024) - in original box and with many games now and accessories! Back then in 1997 i had PS1 and i thought N64 was for kids with the games available back then. Today N64 keeps up and smart with the non-copy cartridges. I can see the fun with this console after decades now 😊

who tf is thumbing this down.. unreal..
Great documentary.
I had the worst luck with PS2...the disk reader would stop working and I went through 3 PS2's...I was so jaded that I switched to Xbox...then the Xbox 360 red rings of death brought me back to buying a ps4 pro...where the disk reader did break, but who needs a disk reader anymore.
To be honest, PC engine made decent arcade ports.
A price tag when counting inflation, one neo geo game cartridge would cost 1200 buks in today's money.
Emulators would stay accepted by companies, if they wouldn't emulate current generation consoles. That's the biggest problem I think.
I wanted one but the cost was so much back then. None of my friend’s parents could afford one even if they could they would not spend that much money on a game system when there were other options available.
I remember playing Zelda right after its US release (yeah I’m old), but I never really got into it. It was fun, but not something I wanted to play all the time. I was the same way about Metroid. No complaints; just took in low doses. I LOVED dragon warrior, and in 1987 I got the game that changed games forever for me; Final Fantasy, the original. From then until FF13 changed everything and screwed the game series up, I was hooked. So Zelda was just lost in the mix for me. I really liked Zelda 2 and 3 but I’ve never played a Zelda game since. Also, I had no idea, I guess I was just a little too young to know about Ultima on microcomputers, but I do remember playing the full blown RPG of Ultima on the Nintendo.
Thank you
"And if you don't have friends" LMAO 😂
Merio
I remeber when i first played mario 64, i was like, wtf is this, this is NOT my mario 😢
Sony was the biggest bully
I love the videos and they’re done incredibly well…but “Meh•rio” and “Ter•meena” is killing me lol
Why are you adding that audio effect to the quotes? It adds nothing especially since your voiceovers are AI generated
These are not AI-generated voices, Sakharu is a French UA-camr who initially creates content in French and has his videos dubbed in English. These situations help provide context for the scenario; you need to read the description or the pinned comment. :)
None of u old enough or lucky enough to be in sf the year 2000 at the metreon to play the first ps2 games before they were even released! First and only PlayStation store. Growing up I thought this type of futuristic shit was going to be the norm! Little did I know the future was gunna suck this bad! Even if ur a millionaire ur still forced to just play in ur room on a screen. This place had a virtual reality halo game 10 before halo! Indoor rollercoaster, first Microsoft store, discovery channel store, imax theater and on the 5th floor it had a where the wild things are adventureland. Now we can’t even get a barns n nobles to hangout at🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤦🏽 Tf happened to the world!??
Which console will you cover next - PS3, Xbox or Xbox 360? 🙂
I have a few emulators on my pc. Great to get a detailed history about emulators
The NeoGeo was ahead of it's time. It ran like a dream and looked like a dream. You put it beside it's peers and it was obvious that it was a higher tier animal.
Ps2 slim even kill place (the Nintendos) where you can play console of Nintendo Sega an ps1 ps2 like arcade machines. Because aforable price
I had a nintendo when i was 5 till the 64 came out. I remember having a sega at one point but idk what happened to it. I completely missed the snes sadly i played it at friends but didnt own one till after i had a 64 i picked it over playstation because i didnt like loading lol the following year i got a playstation i definitely used my ps more but games like mario 64, smash, 007 and zelda were absolutely a pivitol part of my teenage years. I also had gameboy, then color, then advance, and sp. They got tons and tons of play and i have so so many good memories playing those however they were the last Nintendo systems I ever had.
Sony- 100s of garbage games. To which almost none have stood the test of time without complete remakes. Nintendo- most of the games are still playable as is. Revolutionized gaming and more. One stood the test of time, the other did nothing to be honest.
I remember NESticle and its icon 😅
As a Teenager back in the 90s, I did see this, but could never afford it but did want it.
SNK- The Future is now
There was always one kid out of the whole neighborhood that had 1
Excellent documentary.
Just discovered your channel. Top tier videogame documentary content 🎉
I really wanted a neogeo when I was a kid, but I think partially because it was a legendary device in the UK. Pretty much not in any marketing a kid would see, and prices that kept games and consoles out of the shops. It was like the opposite of a boogeyman’s name - a name that suggested something incredibly cool and realistic, but didn’t represent much more than that.
Wow of all the music you could pick from and you picked the only music I ever bought as a kid! ROFL. Ninja ninja rrrrap! Go go go go!
How can burning the American flag be free speech but burning a CD of emulators and SNES ROMs be illegal America is broken Companies should get a set amount of time to make money off of software and after that it becomes public domain
If not for emulation I would probably have never played Chrono Trigger, one of the greatest RPGs of all time.
