Mario, I'll start by saying that, as a Bulgarian, I respect your right to be Macedonian, whether you hyphenate it with Bulgarian or not. Also genetic studies do show that both Bulgarians and Macedonians (and Serbs too), despite speaking Slavic languages are largely descended from indigenous Balkan populations (romanised Thracians, Macedonians, Illyrians...)- so I agree that you may even be descended from Alexander the Great, who knows! Having said that, the Macedonians must be the only people on Earth who have to justify and explain why their ancestors called themselves something else (Bulgarians)- evidenced by hundreds, if not thousands, of documents- and spin out long arguments that these same ancestors meant something entirely different when calling themselves that. Yes, the Macedonian- Bulgarians were different from the Bulgarians in Thrace in the same way that say Italians from Sicily were/ are different from Italians from Lombardy. But they still called themselves Bulgarians. Later on, after the wars, the people in Macedonia had a different experience than the people in Bulgaria, as they were in separate countries, and for a variety of reasons the great majority came to see themselves asa separate nation. If the Macedonian position was something along the lines: "we are similar people by customs and language, many of our prominent cultural and historical figures may have called themselves Bulgarian, but now we are separate- Macedonians"- you know, most Bulgarians would have no problem with that at all. Instead, your general argument is that you have never had anything to do with us, we were never the same and if any Macedonians ever called themselves Bulgarians, they meant Christians, Slavs, agriculturalists or whatever- or they were just confused for whatever reason. And you know what? The basis of this is entirely because for a few decades under socialist Yugoslavia, for reasons entirely not of your doing, you lived in a country that was richer and more open to the world compared to Bulgaria, and you felt that you were better than the Bulgarians, the Albanians, even the Greeks. And 2 or 3 generations in Macedonia grew up studying a history which even Macedonian historians nowadays admit was largely fiction. And this is why when you are faced with the uncensored version of what your 19th century ancestors wrote, you have to explain everything with schizophrenic arguments. This is just sad.

May I add to my previous comment, the effects of the unfortunate Greek civil war between communists who wanted to usurp power and align Greece to the Soviet block, and Nationalists. With the defeat of the Communist rebels, which incidentally received help, among others, from Yougoslavia, most of them fled to neighbouring communist countries, mainly Yogaslavia. Please learn to read real historical facts, not fake ones.

However, how do you explain the migration of Germanic tribes such as the Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Lombards, Franks, Vandals, and many others that led to the conquest of the Western Roman Empire? Do you consider this a massive migration of people or not? The same thing happened with the Slavic tribes, my friend! Denying the migration of the Slavs in the 6th century is pseudoscience, especially when we have extensive documentation of this event recorded by the Byzantine Empire. I am a proud Macedonian who lives in Australia. I only speak Greek because for 3000 years Macedonia has been largely Greek speaking. Anything other than this is pure politics nothing more nothing less and shows a complete ignorance of the historical nature of Macedonia - note 3000 years - it is a long time and a lot of history to get your head around. My self conscience is Greek. I attend Greek church and "feel" Greek. Having said that successive governments as they did in Greece in the 40s and across the border in Yugoslavia, Albania and Bulgaria have terrorised Greek speakers as much as the Greek government in the 1940s did the same to Slav-Bulgarian speakers in Macedonia. It was terrible times for everyone and the stories I know are just as bad and just as many from the other side of the coin. There are two sides to every story. It is always the poor people that suffer in wars. Above all we must remember that - NO ONE WINS IN WAR. I wish and pray that there will be some form of healing at some point instead of the same stories circulating around and around over and over raising old wounds that no one can go back to correct. We all know them from all sides of the political and ethnic perspective here in Australia Greeks hate Macedonians and Macedonians hate Greeks etc etc. Let me repeat that I wish and pray because thankfully one of the major concerns from the 1940s onwards as a Greek from Macedonia was never about other language groups or identities living in a larger geographical Macedonia but about atheistic communism that was being spread from the former communist countries I just mentioned. Thankfully with the collapse of the old Soviet Union and a maintenance of our Orthodox Faith in former eastern bloc countries we can relearn what it is to be Christian and above all part of a European family again.
