Evening cuz. Superb as ever watching you craft
@@TruckinPiperBob thank u cuz 👍
Looks great 👍. The music gave it some spaz 👍👍
@@Hinesfarm-Indiana thanks 👍 ya I think it sounds better than the angle grinder blasting in the ol ear 😆
@ yeah that’s true lol 😆
Hey, Dwight. No need to apologise, and I hope your circumstances ease soon. Your channel is a big part of why I'm having a go at making slipjoint. I just wanted to say thank you. 👍🏻
@@ralfbear I do appreciate that 👍 good luck with making ur slip joint! I hope u have fun with it 😃
I like the way you were able to locate and drill the holes. And using pins to mark and cut out the twin, and sand them. 👍🏼
@@Stillypapabear a few lil tricks I've learned over time 👍 I appreciate u watching!

why dont you use a 60 decree dovetail cutter
@@eddieengelbrecht7550 I bought one and wasn't happy with the nic...it isn't customizable so I then would have to buy another one at a different size...the stone was cheaper and I can customize it until I'm happy with the nic... I'm a poor man that's picky
Hello Dwight. Thanks again for another great video. Watching you putting this together made me think of all the odd questions out there of pre-setting and sanding the Tang section to the spring. Also surface grinding the Spring and blade to avoid your blade pulling slightly sideways when closing the knife. I think there are loads of questions around the inner section from a Technical perspective. Would appreciate your input to see your point of view regarding finishing on the inner preparations.
@@thinusdiedericks3240 I appreciate u watching 👍 generally I try to keep things simple. At some point I may try and tackle some of those things in a video
And also the speed that you use to dress and cut. Thanks-
@@michaelmccollum7130 I'm just using a cheap diamond stone dressing tool... I use the vise to hold it and slowly run it into the stone. My mini mill is in high range and I run it about half speed when dressing the stone. When I'm cutting the nail nic I run it about 3/4 speed
Can you give some detail on how you dress the stone?
Spot on explanation, love the fact you eyeball everything, proper bespoke

Thank you Dwight! I really like the looks of the wider nail nick and no matter how far out I adjust my cutter I couldn’t get mine as wide as I would like so I’m going to try a set up similar to yours … I really appreciate the information!
@@johnbarnwell400 ur welcome 👍 oh I forgot to mention that dressing the angle on the stone is a massive dusty mess! Respirator definitely be needed

Is that an aluminium oxide 45 degree wheel you’re using on your mill to cut nail nick ? Or is it diamond? … I’d like to try using one

Hey Dwight, great video, i really enjoyed watching it!. I cant wait for the next part. After you finish, you should definitely try the 3 blade version! The 3 blade stockman is probably my favorite traditional pocket knife pattern ( my first knife was an Old Timer 3 blade Stockman)
@@nathenwallis5664 thank u 👍 I think it's a really cool pattern as well! I have 2 failed 3 blade attempts so far lol a lot of time involved with it but I'll be trying it again at some point

@@tnhillbilly1307 it looks amazing ! Great job
Great job ! I was very impressed to watch the way you built that knife … can I ask you how thick your blade is ? I think I noticed that you start out with 5/32 thick material from the factory or maybe 3/32 ? Anyways .., what is the thickness of the spine of your blade when finished if you don’t mind me asking ?
@@johnbarnwell400 thank u 👍 I start with 3/32 stock... I of course surface grind it after heat treat but I don't pay no mind to how much I take off, just keep going till it's clean enough to suit me ..so I honestly have no clue what the finished thickness is...I imagine every one of my knives are a different thickness 😂 I never have liked math so I measure as little as possible
@@tnhillbilly1307 that’s cool I was just curious as I’ve been starting out with 1/8 inch stock but once I get them finished I’m usually around .090 to .100 ….. I was just thinking 3/32 is .093 thousandth so you must be ending up with .070- .080 … I was just curious how thin your blades were … cause I’d like to make mine somewhat thinner ,., so that my knife would be a little bit lighter weight .. thanks again for sharing your knowledge and videos .. very nice work ! I have learned a lot from your channel ..
@@johnbarnwell400 I'm happy to help when I can 👍 I started off using 1/8 as well and switched to 3/32 after talking to another maker that recommended it unless it was a large pocket knife. Like u mentioned it helps a bit with weight and I personally think it more comfortable to carry because the knife is thinner overall. Setting the action is different between the 2 I think...the strength isn't the same since it's thinner
@@johnbarnwell400 I'll try to remember tomorrow to dust off the ol calipers and see what kind of measurement I get
@ no rush I was just curious .. Thanks again !
Very nice knife brother 🤙
@@piperkennard1039 thank u very much 👍
Do you heat treat the steel first after cleaning everything. Before you grind the Bevels
@@willemventer140 here's a basic list of my order of operations...drill holes, shape parts, nail nic, heat treat, surface grind, set up with ruple jig then grind bevels...hope this helps
I know this was 2 years ago but its very helpful and Awesome. thanks for sharing brother 🤙
@@piperkennard1039 ya this been a day or two lol a lot of my processes have evolved with time. I appreciate u checking my videos out 👍
Hey Dwight … are you using a mini mill machine to cut the long pull in your blade ? And if so … what size milling bit are you using? Also .. is it a round nose milling bit ? I have not put any long pulls in yet and am just wondering the diameter of your mill bit and whether it’s a round nose milling bit ?
@@johnbarnwell400 yessir I'm using a cheap mini mill from Amazon... I'm cutting it in with a 1/32" carbide end mill and yes round nose... I'd definitely give it a go! I think long pulls look good on a variety of blade shapes 👍
@@tnhillbilly1307 thanks for the info ! I’ve got a 1/16 and an 1/8 and I could tell by looking it was a different size … and it looks just right on your knives … il have to order a 1/32 because I’d like to give it a try on a couple of mine .. thanks again for the info !

@@sdunca4864 thank u 👍 thankfully it wasn't bad here were I'm at
Don't take this the wrong way you're back pin spring needs to be up a little bit more so you have a better snap
@@davidjensen4796 no worries 👍 in my opinion how much is ground off in the spring relief dictates that more than the actual pretension...tho it will act completely different once it's peened together...all this is another thing that's personal preference

Excellent video ! I’ve been eagerly waiting for this 3 rd video and you did not disappoint! You are really good at explaining your processes and I have learned so much from you Dwight .. thank you for the shout out on my heat treat video .. … it’s actually easier to see which side of the blade and back spring is flat by not using the stainless foil envelopes like you showed here on this video .. I pretty much do the same thing you do ,,, flatten one side by hand if need be then surface grind …. I also use the middle pin on the liners for the tension instead of the end of the knife … anyways … thanks again for the shout out and for making such good videos with detailed explanations the way you do things .. very impressive 😎👍🏼
