Join along as I babble about books. A lifelong reader, as well as former library assistant, literary agent intern, and bookseller, give me a vibrant world and some awesome characters, and I'll come over to play. My analysis of the craft of storytelling is also shaped by my background as a theatrical dramaturg. I love talking stories, so let's dive in.

My Relationship with ARCs Has Shifted
I've been seeing a lot of posting about ARCs (advanced reader copies(, primarily on threads, recently and have been sitting on some thoughts. I'd love to hear yours. Do you value ARC reviews? Do you wish you had more access to ARCs? Do you think ARC etiquette snd expectations have shifted with the rise of self-pub?

Psyche and Eros | Feature Friday Book Review
i don’t have much to say about the content, i really like your voice and editing style :3 one bit of advice, i’d add a bit of soft music behind it. can’t wait to see your channel grow :D
Thanks for tuning in and the feedback!
I'm looking forward to the Malort video. It is the star so why not focus on it? 😂
We’ll just look like we feel on the inside while drinking Malört 😂
Reading the book now and I love it so far.
I hope you continue to love it! I’m currently reading her newest release 😊
I read 14 books in September my favorites are The wild truth by carine mccandless memoir she's the sister of Christopher mccandless there's a book and movie based on his life Twisted lies by ana Huang City of dreams by don Winslow sequel to city of fire The air he breathes by brittainy cherry My least favorite flying solo by linda Holmes
What a good month!!
I absolutely loved your review!!! I just finished the book and this video is the best
Thank you! 😊
I haven't read any of those, but some Japanese titles I like are: I Called Him Necktie Convenience Store Woman The Woman In The Purple Skirt Kokoro
I loved Convenience Store Woman. I did snag Earthlings and grabbed a short story collection in Japan as well!
Yerin is gorgeous😊😊😊 and their first pics together are so beautiful as well. I cant believe we have to wait for 2 years
Yerin is stunning as are those first pictures but I agree two years is…a lot.
Sophie is coming!!! Her and Benedict are going to meet! It's coming!!! Yerin Ha is Sophie!!!
🥳
I re read the book as i was watching the movie and while I could see their intentions behind some changes Iulttimately feel that naratively it just doesnt work. At no point does tally or any othe carachter feel real and that sucks because i do enjoy the books and would have loved the full series being adapted
Agree with this assessment! I don’t think the choices are necessarily bad; they just don’t feel grounded.
I didn't know they made this into a movie! I just reread the series earlier this year. Loved your commentary 👌
What serendipitous timing!
Fitz exists in this universe, i am shooketh. Does anyone else made the connection - assassin- Fitz like…
Excited to watch this later >:]
☺️
I highly recommend two novella length contemporary works, Cold Enough for Snow, about a mother and daughter traveling in Japan and The Way Kyoto Breaks Your Heart, a memoir about being a tour guide in historic Kyoto, both excellent!
Sorry my youtube app just crashed and I lost my other comment about "Before the Coffee Gets Cold". I have heard mixed reviews on the series as a whole but I enjoyed them! I often find some Japanese Literature to be very deep/depressing at times, but I have been finding more and more translations of things that are more in my specific genre. For Murakami there really is no going wrong, but my personal favorite is "First Person Singular" which is a collection of 8 stories all told in first person narration. Very philosophical. I'm really enjoying anthologies because it gives me great stopping points, and I love to take poetry or short stories/novellas when I travel. I find it easier to set them down and focus on my surroundings to enjoy where I am.
Great recs!
I highly recommend Satoshi Yagisawa's "Days at the Morisaki Bookshop" and the follow up "More Days at the Morisaki Bookshop". Two small novellas about a woman who quots her job and moves to stay with her uncle at his second hand bookshop in Jimbocho (the famous book district). She learns to fall in love with reading and many scenes take place on a rainy day or in a nearby coffeeshop. It's the perfect little love letter to booklovers and anyone who knows what it feels like to have to start over.
I definitely had the first one on the list due to you mentioning it!
@@bookishmelody It's got some romance too! Really cozy vibes.
I never understood checking other opinions on books before reading them myself. Like... I like the premise, so I get it and read it? I never check Goodreads before reading, I read what *I* find interesting. There was a book that had a rating of 2.2-ish that I LOVED. And I often dislike books that are usually rated 5 stars. Read the blurbs again and decide which books you're excited to read, easy as that
You should definitely read kafka on the shore. Haruki murakami is my favorite author and tbh i didn't really like norwegian wood. And if you're okay with a longer read 1q84 is great too
I feel like 1Q84 may be a little ambitious right now but will keep the rec in mind!
If this is for a trip stop over thinking and just enjoy it
As an admitted chronic over-thinker, this is more a lighthearted mental exercise. The trip will be enjoyed either way, but I recognize others may be more well-read in this area and have valuable input. Appreciate the reminder though!
@@bookishmelodyover reading means you loose any chance of experiencing the culture first hand. I am Japanese. I promise read nothing. Be polite and experience life in the moment nothing will beat it. And everyone will try and speak English with you don’t worry about Japanese. Just learn very basic phrases and you will be ok.
What are the odds of it being saved now that George RR Martin has tweeted about the efforts to renew the show and given it a little more attention?
I honestly have no clue since the bar of “success” for these steaming executives are baffling to me, but it’s some good attention and vindication of the storytelling and voice for sure!
Enjoy your vacation!
Thank you!
5 star book❤❤❤❤❤
I really enjoyed this book this is totally my favorite book by Emily ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
That’s high praise! I’m going to need to revisit Beach Read and Book Lovers to get a really accurate assessment of my ranking
Here's what I read Summer reading by jenn McKinley Summer on sag harbor by sunny hostin The mystery guest by nita prose Long past summer by noue kiwan Everyone on this train is a suspect by Benjamin Stevenson Midsummer mysteries by Agatha Christie Your fault by Mercedes ron Sex lies and sensibility by nikki Payne Life and other inconveniences by kristan Higgins Forever is now by Mariana j lockingington
A great month!
Yay! For the mention of MTA’s Feed! Such an amazing book and I don’t know why it so doesn’t have a continued strong following, especially on TikTok? It seems built for the BookTokers to adore age promote. Feed needs a big group read & discussion in 2025!
Ironically or not I am currently reading M.T. Anderson’s first adult title that came out this year. I read a stage adaptation of Feed years and years ago but it was for a developmental opportunity where we read submissions without playwright names and I haven’t encountered it again since.
Great and thoughtful review! Thank you! I just finished the book and I have mixed feelings about it. The writing was great, the characters were interesting, and the plot had potential but it was just missing something. I definitely agree that the beautiful writing acted like “smoke and mirrors” which in my opinion covered up some things like lack of relationship development between Arthie, Leith, and Mateo and an overly convoluted plot that I felt like Hafsah had so many things she wanted to achieve but not enough time to flesh it out properly. I’ll be keeping an eye out for the next book because I did like the characters but I’m not sure if I’ll be continuing on with the series.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Great, thoughtful review. I very much agree on a novel needing to have the emotional beats to keep the reader engaged and connected to the characters. And that cover is gorgeous! I noticed the flowers right away since Persephone was supposedly picking narcissus when the Underworld opened up. Did flowers feature in the book or was that just for the cover design? Also, as you were talking, I began to think about how the Persephone/Demeter myth was part of the Eleusinian Mysteries and if any of these modern retellings delve into that aspect. I think a fictional retelling that alludes to that mystery cult, overtly or covertly, would be fabulous!
Flowers did feature prominently in the plotting!
All of these shows are garbage. It died for a reason. I forgot how the king was a gay black disabled guy.
Miss opportunity to crossover "My Contrary Mary"
Absolutely where I was planning for them to go narratively ☹️
I believe the Seymour portrayed here is Edward Seymour, so Thomas’ brother. They refer to Catherine Grey flirting with his son, and Catherine in history got married to Edward’s son. I mix up my Seymour’s as well so I checked out the connection when I looked into Catherine Grey a while back.
I read this today for Shorty September! So good!
Shorty September is a fab idea and I’m so glad you liked it too!
I didn't even know Bookstore Romance Day was a thing! So great to hear that so many people were there to support an indie bookstore! That's so beautiful to hear about the library bringing your grandmother CD's to read books, and so sorry for your loss ❤
Thank you ❤️ I do feel like Bookstore Romance Day is picking up steam but it’s mostly an indie bookstore event and largely depends on how much individual stores do to “celebrate”
🥰
Still shocking how this movie is based off of a book
Honestly comedy in and of itself
Amazon doesn’t promote their damn shows and instead gives us ads for Tinder and shit, then they’re surprised there’s not enough audiences. This show was SO GOOD. They hate quality. I just hope the team and the cast know they did amazing and Amazon is a money hungry he’ll hole of a company.
I only got prime to watch because I’m not a fan of Amazon. I also just wish all the streaming platforms supported their shows more rather than just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks - based on who even knows what metric
The save Lockwood and Co fandom stsbds with the My Lady Jane fandom. Its horrible how all of our favorite shows are getting cancled. I hope one day we can all get our shows back.
It hasn't even been a month! 😭
I know! 😭
I hate Prime and Netflix for what they did to my fav shows! RIP : Anne with an E, 1899 and now My Lady Jane
omg and lets not forget Shadow and Bone, why are they like this?! I hope they won't cancel Maxton Hall and Good Omens
Same with Lockwood and Co!
Oh my gosh right!! It's like they see. A show that's actually clever and has potential and just say, "nope, too much work. It's too good for us"
Everyone I know who watched it loved it, but I think the advertising sucked. I found it only because I follow one of the authors on instagram
I agree! I found out about it only a couple of weeks before it came out even loving the book.
Thank you for a lovely video! I've just finished this book and I absolutely loved it. Some things really stood out to me. I don't think Gelon and Lampo are selfish, they are just brutal representations of the time they are living in. It's realistic- even though by our standards its selfish. In Roman times slaves are slaves, women are chattel . His club foot I don't think is there for comedic effect, it's done for tragic effect. He is like the Athenians- he has to drag his foot like it's chained up. He's chained and suppressed just like the Athenians- it's just his chain is invisible. I can't wait for his next book x
Great thoughts!
whattt?!? i thought it was a hit for Prime?
Same! 😭
Go woke go broke
🙄🙄
