The Bear, Bakuman & The Nightmarish Reality of Following Your Passions
With The Bear Season 3 having recently come out and having followed it for the past year for Seasons 1 and 2, I've found myself being reminded of another series alongside it which follows a similar pattern in a different industry, Bakuman.
And upon looking at Bakuman again, it made me rethink both series a lot more indepth to figure out what exactly makes them both stick out so well. That underlying theme being how brutally real these series depiction of their industries are and how following what you love can be a tough road to follow.
But, is that all there is to it? Well, let's have a look with todays video and see if there is something good in something so dark between the two

Why I Love K-ON! (And You Should Too!)

2009 was arguably one of the biggest years for Anime fans, with big name series that would be remembered fondly and in infamy forever coming out of the woodwork. And in between all of them was one series made by Kyoto Animation that, at the time may have been seen as your run of the mill Slice of Life Highschool Comedy series like Azumanga Daioh or Lucky Star before it, but would go on to not j...

If you were around online or watching Anime in general in the late 2000's you've probably heard the term "moeblob" thrown around a lot with a negative connotation. For a series that has run on for over 60 years as Doctor Who has, it's amount of hits and misses has wildly fluctuated over the years since it began airing in the 60's. And while there's been some series' and Doctor's which have caused contention amongst the masses, none have really drawn the ire of fans than Jodie Whittaker's portrayal of the 13th Doctor written by Chris Chibnall, to the point...

    I think I just figured out what the cowbell episode is about. I had never thought about the idea that it could be meta and not just sureal for the sake of. The cowbell represents the rings. Nanami represents all the duealists but maybe specifically utena, maybe just the black rose duelists. Wearing the ring makes you a dualist, you act strangely because you are wearing a piece of jewelry, everyone can see something is wrong with them except themselves. If they took off the ring they would stop playing the game, and it would be fine. Anthey is encouraging the delusion, she named the cow nanami, she plays the rosebride when she could be honest. And the cow gets slaughtered for akio, just like how the dualists will ultimately just be slaughtered for akio's benefit.

  • @ValeriaXSandra
    @ValeriaXSandra 27 днів тому

    You played Nanami's cowbell dirty. And jokes on you, who missed the point and decided to make a loud oof from it. The episode's meaning beneath the surface is her fascination with Toga. She believes Toga sent her the necklace, so what others say is white noise! Togs is perfect, his taste is supreme. Except Anthy sent it. With all the dreams and magic. And Dona-Dona. This song has meaning. Yiddish song, about man named Jura the PRINCE, and calf that came to it for symphaty. All the episode is Anthy's scream to Nanami :"Open your eyes, your brother is out to kill you, you dumb cow!" There is great analysis on this on UA-cam, you should really find it, I think video is called artifice and equality. There is three series of those, and I encourage everyone to watch it Also English dub is not worth any praise. I don't know all of it, since I just saw fragments, but what I heard of it is awful. Voices are flat and translation is whacky. Miki's cast was nail in the coffin. Miki has a high, unbroken, childish voice, and in one of the light novels it described as soprano. Freaking highest in the range. And they desided to let him be voiced by twenty something baritone. Ugh.. I can't even. Sorry for being grumpy, you did good job, but those are things I can't paas

    • @ChloeSunfloraVA
      @ChloeSunfloraVA 27 днів тому

      I'll actually defend the dub anyday, it's one of the better ones to have come out from the Central Park Media crew, this and the OG Slayers Trilogy are the two best dubs to come from that company and if it weren't for this or Slayers, we arguably wouldn't have VO legends like Eric Stuart, Crispin Freeman and especially Rachel Lillis in the industry. So while it may not fit what may be an idea behind how the voices sound, they deserve to be respected regardless for what they did for the industry at the time.

      @@ChloeSunfloraVA you are right about this one. Actors are not to blame. But, as someone with film directing bachelors, I still stand by my opinions. Actors don't just do what they want. Those who given them instructions, however, are to blame. As a voicing director one gives actors clear instructions, double check translation, and sure as heck do not allow miscast that is directly opposes character. This is not unavoidable mistakes either, even with limitation in budget. Original show is done with love and creativity and not giving actors " Hey, do Akio deeper and with some breath, and Utena should sound here a bit more ring to her voice, here and there" feels bad

    My general take is that it had heart. This was something that the production crew under Christopher Chibnall was clearly passionate about and were determined to see through even with CO-VID troubles. Frankly, Flux was my favorite season in how it was messy like a good Classic Who serial but with NuWho elements. I do think that they could pulled from Broadchurch and Torchwood in terms of storytelling. I get the sense family TV isn’t Chibnall’s forte because Broadchurch has moments that will stick with me forever and ever. Season 2, man… I know many will roll their eyes at “heart” but frankly, I would rather have many movies or shows that have clear skill issues as a gamer would put it but have a story they wanna tell through all the corporate fuckery and budget slashing. It does feel like we’re too… unforgiving of shows that try and fail. I get that it’s more so with Doctor Who since it has a long legacy yet even Love and Monsters has been get more of a revisiting.

    I can relate to this in a way. I'm an amab masc non binary person, and I've always felt more comfortable being around girls than I did boys. And growing up, I always connected more with female character than male characters. And when I got into otaku culture, some of the earliest characters I connected with were moe girls and waifus. One was even my non binary awakening ( that being Kiria from the game Tokyo Mirag Sessions ). Since then, I always felt a lot of comfort in media with entirely/a lot of cute girls and waifus, because I relate to them, I admire them, and they're also an escape for me from living in an traditional masculine environment. Also I just love the aesthetics of those types of characters. Not necessarily because I'm attracted to them, but because I just think they're cute and cool.

    I didn’t like RTD’s initial run outside of season 4, and 9 as a character (not his season just 9 himself) I adored half of Moffat’s era, and hate the other None of the show runners are perfect, and even if chibnall is worse, I think him getting the amount of shit he does is a little unfair.

    Spoilers for end of the series/kooky fan theory: I interpreted Nanami as becoming the next rose bride and very much stuck in Ohtori until she is able to remember what happened at the end of the series. I thought it was implied by her losing against Utena that her wish to leave Ohtori wasn’t granted by the prince (who I think is kind of like God in their universe which implies Akio is also a cult leader because he is a second coming of the prince, but I digress). Ohtori is also in some sort of weird time loop where certain characters have to forget what was before and be played in order for the dogma to stay in place (rose bride, end of the world, prince, pawns, etc). And at the end of the series she is shown to be passive towards her brother in I way I thought was similar to the rose bride and which goes against her character growth and characterization throughout the series. If I were to write a spinoff sequel series I would make it where Nanami’s the rose bride, Saionji’s the prince and Touga has Nanami at the start of the series. Saionji remembers everything about Utena and himself because of that diary that no one cared about. Nanami and Touga don’t remember anything, even their childhood, which is horrible for Saionji because his best friend literally doesn’t remember him. To make things more interesting, some of the characters remember what happened and some don’t so they are either able to use that information to help others revolutionize or spread lies and use it as a bargaining chip or blackmail to gain power and influence. It would be up to Saionji to challenge these beliefs which would lead him to question his own and turn slowly change him from a raging misogynist and repressed gay to a better person who is a little less toxic and is able to accept himself through revolution and un-brainwashing the other characters and teaming up with them to take down end of the world/Akio by breaking apart the “cult” from the inside.

    • @ChloeSunfloraVA
      @ChloeSunfloraVA Місяць тому

      I get where you're coming from, but I feel the whole point about the ending was basically that while the majority of Ohtori has reset, enough has changed in everyone affected by the Rose Bride duels has been able to move forward in their own ways to the point where it can no longer continue as it was, as made bare when Anthy leaves of her own volition and ends the system she was trapped in. The Rose Bride isn't something easily transferable either, it was Anthy's curse she had been felt forced to bare, Nanami may be a mirror to Anthy but it shouldn't be that she would be manipulated into being the Rose Bride, especially given what she knows about Akio by the end. That concept you mentioned at the end is WILD as well, Saionji as an Utena stand in feels so wrong yet it could work so well if Akio did have universe manipulating powers to puppet them into place like that once Anthy leaves him

    I personally always thought Hide and Seek was *THE* worst and it wasn't even a contest. The fact that the kids were obnoxious as hell throughout the whole episode just to build toward the big reveal that Bobby was real would be less than satisfying, even if the explanation wasn't completely bogus. The explanation was that Bobby hid from Raven (and us through her) because she gave him bad vibes, but does that mean he was chill with the evil menacing gorilla man who was literally hunting them down? Mallah could very clearly see Bobby on more than zero occasions during their fights, so fuck that. I never wanted to see those stupid brats or their dumb plus-sized plushie ever again. The only redeemable quality is that it shows how impressively patient Raven can be. At least with Mother Mae Eye the titans were only obnoxious because they weren't themselves and BB trying to transform in the bunny suit was funny and also when he took a T-rex-sized bite out of that giant gingerbread thingy...

    Something I think would be PERFECT for a video essay is the demographics. Most people seem to not know much about the demographics so I say this thing to inform people of what the demographics are really capable of. Your Lie in Aprill and A Silent Voice are Shonen K-On and Bocchi the Rock are Seinen Cowboy Bebop and Code Geass are Shoujo Play it Cool, Guys and Servamp are Josei. The reactions I usually get are absolute bewilderment that something so cute full of just a bunch of girls could be made with a male demographic in mind and a refusal to accept the fact that beloved series like cowboy bebop and code geass could possibly be shoujo. These reactions are predictable and usually show me these people probably don't have much of an understand of the demographics. A lot of people don't even know Josei exist and just assume Seinen is THE adult demographic. I'm sure you're aware of what the demographics mean (Shonen for boys Shoujo for girls Seinen for men Josei for women). Which is why I find it to be honestly so cute that the majority of the moe shows are intended for a male demographic. {K-On} {Bocchi the Rock} {Non Non Biyori} {Train to the End of the World} and many more, all of these are Seinen. Ermi Anime has a video on why this might be called "The Male Gaze in Anime and its effects" it's an amazing video that goes over the male gaze from a different perspective than what's in current media as well as explaining the history behind the cute girls doing cute things genre and why it's in the male demographics now. He brings up how in the past the expectations on men to perform masculinity were significantly more prevalent in society and due to this fact a lot of men started reading Shoujo manga, because it's a comfort to read stories where those heavy exceptions don't exist. Specifically masculine expectations don't exist in series where male characters don't exist. So as it stands today publishers editors and mangakas a like have recognized that actually a lot of dudes REALLY love the cute girls doing cute things genre, and now they mostly Seinen with a few being shonen. Speaking of, I have an amazing shonen anime to recommend you that i think you might LOVE. It really is an adorable anime that's airing right now, this season. it's called Jellyfish can't swim in the night. Despite it being a **shonen** it is an anime about and only about a bunch of girls and their struggles, there is also quite a bit of drama in this series too but it does have it wholesome moments. Honestly it really is such an adorable series. (I've also been reading this one Seinen manga series called After God, it's about a woman that wants to kill god).

    Have you ever noticed that this great show was produced in 16:9 but for the most part creators thought to put the action and characters in the centre of the screen. It was done because in most places show was screened in 4:3 so no much was missed! It was only when I rewatched Only Human that I realised it must be also avaible in 16:9!

    Okay so... I like Yaz and The Doctor. Quite a bit. And I don't think it's "queer baiting". First of, they *are* queer, they express their feelings for one another as well as why a relationship would be difficult for The Doctor, but they decide to enjoy what they have while they have it. It makes a lot of sense that The Doctor wouldn't pursue a relationship at this point because as you mentioned, she's tired. It makes sense that Yaz would take so long to see The Doctor as someone she *could* date, because The Doctor's been so distant and secretive (because she's tired). I think it's great, in a tragic way, that just as they felt like giving it a try, their time together was cut short before their relationship could really get started. I like that as a story and I don't think it's fair to boil it down to "queer baiting" when the same story about a straight pairing would simply be regarded as a tragedy. Besides, The Doctor has already been pretty clearly queer in the past and it's continuing to be a thing with future Doctors so I really don't see the problem here

    I have a bucketfull of criticisms for the Yasmin Kahn queerbait but *"they suddenly made her gay at the last minute out of nowhere"* is not one of them. The point of bait is that it is hinted at, implied, forever tantalisingly obscured, and then never properly dealt with... which is exactly whjat they did with yas. Her queerness was only finally made *explicit* at the last possible moment out of nowhere and they did nothing with it... true and fair. That said, I refuse to gloss over the queer subtext that was right there from the first episode. Fans weren't 'reading too much into' stuff that wasn't there. The subtext was intentional from the conception of the character and chibbers never intended to do anything but dance around it. That's why it was bait.

    I think the difference between The Cartmel Masterplan and The Timeless Child is that the former wanted to add more mystery to The Doctor & his character (with him being aware of what he was) but The Timeless Child basically takes away 1 mystery to replace it with another, with it being a reveal to The Doctor as well as the audience. It doesn’t add any mystery to the character as the character is just as in the dark as the audience is. That is why Andrew Cartmel doesn’t agree with The Timeless Child. Basically, it’s like changing the title from Doctor Who to Doctor What, because character wise it’s exactly the same. It’s like The Timeless Child is trying to overshadow the question of the show, Doctor Who? Also, I have to disagree with the comparison with Trial of a Timelord & Flux. Trial at least has that epic speech in The Ultimate Foe which is arguably the defining moment for The 6th Doctor. 13 doesn’t get a scene like that. Also, while Flux feels rushed, it also feels extremely tedious. Survivors of the Flux is one of the most pointless & bland episodes of the entire show. Over a fifth of the episode is devoted to the hidden backstory of UNIT which is just pointless filler to give a weak reason for why the Sontarans invade (which they don’t even need a reason as to why they invade when they can just do it), The Grand Serpent is such a pointless & thrown character and Kate Stewart has literally nothing to do in Flux! She’s pointless in it (the only other guy in this rebellion of hers is 1 guy who gets killed by The Grand Serpent! I mean the episode kills The Doctor’s adopted mother…and I feel nothing. Also, Correction: Grace isn’t Ryan’s mum. She’s Ryan’s grandmother

    About 3 minutes into the video, I had the thought “Thirteen reminds me of Five, possibly my least-favorite Classic Doctor: both suffer from having very vaguely defined personalities and motivations, and frequently being bland and forgettable in a room full of scenery-chewers. And when they _do_ have a strong opinion or quirky response, they feel very inconsistently written-it’s whatever strong opinion the story needs, rather than what makes the most sense for this version of the Doctor. But Five isn’t anywhere near my least-favorite era of Classic Who, because of the stories. Not all of them, of course, but enough were good, and several of the GOATs were in seasons 19-21. And while 3 companions was a writing/story problem for Series 11-13, during seasons 18-20 the stories were typically twice as long, giving more time to give everyone something to do. The extra companions sometimes even made the stories _better,_ making the sometimes-painful padding of many Classic Who stories (particularly Pertwee’s) less obvious, or even eliminating it. Which, BTW, gets to which _is_ my least-favorite Doctor’s era of Classic Who: Pertwee. While Three was generally engaging and often fun, the _stories_ from seasons 8-11 are just…. Well, most of them have some good bits , but they’re too few and far between. Season 7 is an interesting change, but most of the stories are at least 2 episodes too long, and making the Doctor Earth-bound makes it hard to do the stories I most love: meeting weird alien societies and exploring fascinating strange worlds. Seasons 8-11 got increasingly repetitive and predictable and padded. A 27-minute chase that ends with the pursued and pursuer both back exactly where they started and then the pursued gets away and the pursuer doesn’t even know about the secret macguffin that just got away with them‽ In a series with 25-minute episodes‽‽ Yes, you can literally skip an entire episode of _Planet of the Spiders_ and it won’t make any difference on the story. If that’s the alternative, I’ll take running down suspiciously short corridors every time!” And then I get to about 27:38 and you bring up a very similar comparison between Whittaker’s era and Pertwee’s era! Thirteen unfortunately has the milquetoast personality of Five without enough great stories, the poor stories of Three without the engaging lead, and the too-many-companions of Seasons 18-20 without the longer stories to use them in.

      This is honestly the best comparison I've ever seen for Whittaker's run, she got the worst parts of two doctors and that was part of her downfall tbh
