I live in Wisconsin 15 minutes outside of Appleton. I get ads on my phone all the time pushing Solar. I complete the questionnaire and when my zip code is filled in, I always get a message that I live outside the service area. Solar is a scam. I believe it is a supplement, but the energy companies are preventing installs because they lose money. Even on the State site, I live outside the service area. Total BS!

no fan of most electric co. but the states that started 1 kw i negated by 1 ky out has made electric more difficult and expensive since you cannot sell something for what you pay , and it requires the utilitu to have enough kw backup for every grid tied since many reasons a home goes off line . or produces electric which is not needed . california has had to pay other states to take its surplus electric ,at noon because demand is 4 to 8 pm peak solar is 10 to 2 and megabatteries are extremly expensive and dangerious and still can only have mininutes not hours of backup each. i agree in thelate 21 and 22 century electric will be the major power but only if we build the 2 ne styles of nuclear with the automatic freeze plug moltin salt thorium is one we have hundred yrs of waste material to convert , and the new fuel one i haven seen detailes but i believe similar solers good for more remote and specalised and current wind not soo good so far

Rooftop Solar sales pitch is a scam. I put a $30k system on my house. Clue phone...doesn't work at night. 2nd) There is no allowed battery storage while connected to the grid without more expensive "islanding" device. 3rd) The rate the electric company pays for your electricity is the cheapest rate (in dollars, not KW)...meaning, you bank during spring, pay money over summer, then begin banking in the fall, then paid-out as a $$ credit on your bill Jan1. To not pay over the summer means an ENORMOUS system & up front cost. Now look at how much electricity just that $30k for the system could buy...and dont forget, you're paying each month for 7-10years. Now look at the production fall-off & failure rate of your system...and you'll see no way it comes close to 80% capacity in 25 years. Lemme also add, when your electricity usage from the grid goes down, the rate goes up...most sales people never calculate that correctly. REAL SOLUTION: 1) Replce all lighting with low wattage, and reduce the number of lights in a room. 2) Install a Programmable thermostat, and turn off the AC during the highest priced electric rates. 3) Improve insulation 1rst in ceiling, 2nd in walls, 3rd windows (from cost ROI). 4) Upgrade other areas that will reduce the DEMAND for electricity. 5) Consider installing a mini-split AC to run during peak rates for that 1 room you need AC instead of running the house AC. 6) For that 1 device or during peak hours consider the ROI of a mid-size battery (~$1k) that can be charged with off-peak electricity and used during high-rate electricity.

This is how it plays out in my head: The government: We need to go green! The people: Yes we agree, lets add solar to our roofs. Also some of us can provide our own energy so lets skip being grid tied as well to save money on connection fees! The government: Oh that sounds like a good plan! Energy companies: NO! We can't afford losing people and support the infrastructure. So we have to raise prices if they leave. The government: Oh no we can't have that. Okay so you still have to be grid tied and forced to pay monthly fees while not using any electricity. Also lets make regulations to drive the costs of solar up. That about sums it up.

Time to buy some batteries and an inverter!

This is why power companies are pushing so hard for 'Smart Meters' in the UK. Once enough people have them they will be able to detect solar power use and increase charges. This just goes to show what a scam the 'green initiatives' are because the government really does not care about anything except fooling the foolish so that tax can be raised.

The rats really can't catch a break. You get them to invest early into something with a promise of it paying off (college, solar, EVs, crypto, etc.) and then you pull the rug once you made money off their hope. The rat race is brutal.

This already happened in my country. If you want rooftop solar you can’t connect it to your home electricity circuit that connected to the gird. I don’t know the detail but it’s so strict that your only option is connect to the grid or not at all

My dad and i went in and got a off grid set up for there house there still tied in with the grid but they love that there bill is only 15$ a month and just under 400 a month on the solar system there saving about 200 dollars a month compared to what they was paying a month for power

There can be an automatic cut of system. An automatic covering when battery is full, and stops harvested energy

When tbey say California is overloading the electrical grid by charging EV. This is electric companies laying the ground work to for EV owners to the EV charging stations as opposed to the gas pump. The sun is free, buyi g a EV charging station using sunas opposed to gas, takes funds fron EV electric suppliers aka power companies etc.

Bill without solar: $1000~ per quarter Bill with solar: $200~ per quarter (no battery) Bill if they ban rooftop solar: $0 because i went off grid

I have smart panel connected to battery. I store and use my solar. Plus I have the batteries as a power backup. This is better for me than selling power.

Umm I'm 100% off grid I made the power company get the wires off my property or would cut the pole in my back yard down they can't stop me.

A powerwall is the answer to these problems. Charge your electric car off-hours etc.

My other favorite is the solar sales place that subcontracts the installation to a crew who doesn't care about installation. I know of a family who bought 20 panels and when the crew arrived they realized 20 wouldn't fit within the easements around the dormers so they convinced the wife that they could put all 20 on the north roof face. I've seen installations done by Titan that did not use any sort of flashing feet on shingles and leaked. Fly by night companies are the worst. We bought 7 years ago from S.E.M. out of raleigh NC and they called to check on us with I revamped the system... they have a 5 year perfomance guarantee and they actually called to check on us. Good folks.

This happened to my family. Greatest part is the company we purchased solar through went out of business after lying to us about being grandfathered. The entire city where we live is pushing bad and extremely angry with not just the credit changes, but the introduction of variable rates depending on the time of day energy is sent or used. Went from zero electric cost to a couple hundred a month, on top of the payments for the solar system. While I get it, I think the easiest and best solution is to make energy companies stop operating for profit. Utilities should never cost the people they're servicing much more than cost.

Let's be completely honest if there was on grid there would be no economy, to speak of,we are all connected as Americans and society will not function if half the population doesn't participate. The same idea extends to remote work,if everyone works remote and moves to currently cheap places to live neither the affordable place to live & the job will survive, because if the cities were to truly go broke the market would crash and most companies will cut back to account for the hard economic times ahead.

The fair thing to do would be for the power company to buy the power at the wholesale rate, instead of the retail rate. Granted, that isn't as simple as ordinary net metering, but it is fair.

Sunrun told me if I purchased the system outright that they would NOT cover any maintenance or repairs. They said the only way they would cover anything is through leasing.. They also quoted me at the time 70k for the system, which I thought was insane.. The sales rep also did not know what type of panels and inverters they used and no matter how many times I asked for this info before agreeing to anything, he just never sent it over..
