@@vandit0o0omight be a good project for offseason. In the meantime, I suggest investing in a roller spreader and Black Kow/peat moss for a few years first. But, if you invest in an aerator/plugger, make sure you top dress AFTER you aerate.

Yes, renting is definitely an option for some I agree. My DIY is mostly for those who want the satisfaction of building one of their own , not have to spend more money having to rent one if they want to core aerate multiple times a year, not have to load and unload a heavy machine multiple times to and from the store and have to have fuel available. My DIY is still cheap, very easy to build, lite weight, can be disassembled to a compact size for easy storage and very easy to use (to include being customizable). And since building mine almost 1.5 yrs ago has yet to break down or need any fixing or adjusting. To include no need for fuel and changing of the oil and filter. Sure it takes me just a little longer to core aerator compared to mowing...with just one wheel. Once I add the second wheel, it will cut down on my time even more. Your observations are valid, thank you for your feedback. Happy core aerating. 👍

Rent for day and split cost with neighbors usually you could do your yard and two neighbors to offset rental cost.

​@@vandit0o0o I'm with you on making one. I could afford to go out and buy one of these for $3k but is rather make one myself. I saw a guy online make one out of an old treadmill. It had the handles and giant display on it still.

Renting is not cheaper in any sense. It’s definitely easier. You have to rent every single time. So two rentals and you’re already over. This can be used over and over and over and over. And the guy just wants to show ppl how to do things for themselves, why try to talk him out of it. If you do commercial landscaping and your only choices are (1)cheap, garbage spike aerator… (2) extremely expensive powered core aerators (3) spend $120 on a rental, spend gas, time, energy, and headache picking it up, doing paper work, etc. and have to aerate as many yards as possible in a single day just to barely break even or just make a small profit. This can be carried on the truck at any time and simply done at any time, as needed. The dollar cost and the convenience cost will pay for itself almost immediately and do nothing but bring profits.

Thanks. I used the same tool in the video. A grinder with a thin cutting disk to cut the pipes in half and the core ejection cut outs. Then using the grinding disk to grind smooth the tips of the tines.

Thanks. I may make 2 more models this summer, both with double wheels. I think 3 would be to much. I need it to be fun and easy to use. But for sh*ts and giggles I may venture to a 3 wheel model.

That's not gonna work. A 2-wide version already doesn't penetrate as well as a one-wheel version.

@@TheEchelon From what I can tell, the tines need to be replaced with pointed ones to make it amazing. Then the dual would be better! I also found a company who makes these with a break rotor!

It would need to be heavy and you would want the wheels to spin independently otherwise turning it would be very difficult. Probable would cost more time and effort than the single wheel.

Hey, thank you. Glad you liked it. When it comes to manufactured tines, try to get ones with the tip openings being 3/4" to 1". I had some about 1/2" and they did not work great.

These are standard tools that pretty much all DIY'ers have at their disposal. If you don't want to buy the tools, feel free to pay $400 for the Rollaerator that's already pre-made by Amick. If you don't have tools like this, this project is too much for you to handle anyways.

@TheEchelon I don't really care. I don't have a big enough lawn to need this anyways. I am just saying that not everyone has these tools or needs them around. For what everyday reason would you need a tool that can cut through a metal pipe? I would even say, who needs to saw plywood regularly? More like enthusiasts or hobby people. We can have a debate about what are common tools and not common tools. I suppose we can diy a house with the right tools and skills. All I am saying is that the 160 price is not entirely accurate if u don't got the tools that's why people have to pay the big bucks.

This is an amazing job this diyer did, and he's just letting us other diyers with tools, know how much it would cost. If you don't have tools, you're not a diyer, so why even bother watching, just to hate on creators. And like the other comment said, if you don't have tools, don't even think about buying tools to build this because you'll probably cut your finger off making the tines, lol.

Did any of you ever have a beginning when you had minimal tools and skills at ur disposal? When someone says something is 160, u expect 160 with minimal everyday tools. Sorry. I don't cut pipes and wood everyday in my suburban home. I have only owned a home for 4 years, it the first in my family. No, I dont own a pipe cutter or tools that cut plywood. I dont need to build a shed or a deck. I have plastered my walls, painted, screwed and hammers nails. Not having these tools doesnt make people idiots or less of a man or something. It's just makes them an average homeowner. Sheesh. Take a chill pill.

The tines from Amazon were giving me cores to thin and they'd get clogged to quickly, so I gave up on those. I used my grinder with a thin cutting disk to cut the tines in half and then using that same disk just smooth out the tips. Hope this helps.

@@vandit0o0o thanks. Cutting the tines in half was pretty intuitive, but did you use the same cutting disk and angle grinder to cut out the slots to eject the cores?

I wanted to show that it was possible to make a very affordable core aerator so that's why I kept it to one wheel. Plus I wasn't sure how easy 2 wheels was going to be to use. I've gotten so many requests to make mine a double wheel so it may happen this summer.

@@vandit0o0o I was thinking conduit would be inexpensive to replace and penetrate easier. Also I have the southern red clay to deal with.

@@philzail2532 I see. It wouldn't hurt to try that type of metal. Just keep in mind the tines will carry a lot of weight and hitting something like rocks could damage the tip or bend it. If your clay is to hard/compact, try adding some soil amendment to it.

@@vandit0o0o I do understand what I have and what I need to accomplish. I grew up on the shores of Lake Erie where we had six inches of top soil. I want to build or buy something I can pull behind my riding lawnmower. I more than anyone need to amend my soil. I'll make the tines double ended symmetrical so I can use both ends. A pipe as your using in my opinion will have a much harder time being able to pierce the clay. A thinner wall will work better at that. Conduit is fairly in expensive, cheap to replace. I might even be able to have the tines ground fairly precise. I was a machinist all my life and still have access to a machine shop. But amending is priority one! I just looked it up, 1/2" by 10 foot conduit cost, $6.65. Also I think you're underestimate the strength of conduit. I think it will wear fast because it's a mild steel, so I'll need to redress the ends. But I think it'll keep it's form.

Good question. I probably won't since the tines themselves would be carrying all the weight and at times hit rocks to I'd go for a stronger metal.

it's $500 now? I got one few years ago and it was around $200 and he shipped the new double disk version because it took him over 2 weeks to fill my order. it works but if you have a large yard say over 4-5000 sq. ft, you might want to look into a power one as it is very tiring and hard work. my yard is about 14,000 sq yd.

@@MrRichardyc they're charging me about $65 for aeration to do my 1200 sq ft lawn. Been going up every year. So this year I just finally pulled the trigger of making my own and finished it on Thursday. Works as expected thanks to this video. Cost less than $80 to make because I have most of the materials. For the weight I used two used rotors that I got from my neighbor. Having that size of a lawn like you would be so tiresome for this manual aerator. It can be a workout by itself.
