    If you want your outliner's scene collection a little less cluttered, you can click-drag an object, in this case your empty sphere, and press shift and release over the object you want it parented to, in this case your cabinet. The empty is now parented to the cabinet, and is placed inside the cabinet object in the outliner. This way, you can fold your cabinet in the outliner, and the empties are stowed away inside of it, creating less overview clutter. (remember that you still have to have all the objects selected when duplicating, or the new object will look at the original empties for the hook modifiers). Very nice tutorial, thanks muchly :)

      @SFE-Viz День тому

      Very true, that's a good way to do it. On a normal project I usually make a separate collection for all the hooks which I can then disable when I don't need them to also declutter the viewport.

    Meh. I made a blender python script that accepts user input, to do the "scale to measurement", but it only works for circle edge loop selections. I was hoping to make it a bit more universal.

    To switch from Global axis to Local axis temporarily, you can simply hit the key for the axis twice and do not have to change the orientation in the top menu. So like in the video, when you want to exclude the local Z axis, hit S, then Shift Z Z. Or to scale on the local X axis, hit S X X. In general, double tapping an axis key switches to global axis whenever the transformation orientation is set to something else than Global. If it is on default Global, double tapping the key will switch to Local. Tapping a third time will release the axis locking again as if you used the tool without hitting any axis key.

    What could be confusing to people is why you first tell how important it is to always apply the scale, then later when you make the first cabinet example you reduce the X dimension by 38 mm, not applying the scale and then when you are doing the "precisely" 19 mm extrusion on the side faces... it unsurprisingly ends with your cabinet showing an unprecise 598 mm on X (rounded, actually it is more like 597.593... mm).

    Great explanations, in particular the Inset tool is something I use very often, especially for things where other tutorials just show a combination of extrude and scale, although insetting could do this much easier and more precise. The only thing I'm missing here is that you could have shown on the icosphere everything you did there would have been possible using the Inset tool, without needing the Extrude or Extrude Along Face Normals, if you would just inset faces by an offset of 0 mm and only giving them depth.

    • @SFE-Viz
      @SFE-Viz 9 днів тому

      True, that would have been another option, but I wanted to demonstrate how well the two tools work together in this instance.

    Thank you for watching. If you're wondering about the cylinder in this video - the original section contained a mistake and has now been removed. You can see the correct way of how to resize sections of cylinders and other objects via the scale tool here: ua-cam.com/video/Y8joAbzmGW0/v-deo.htmlsi=e5GxAkhpsPYSRmP-

  • @smortonmedia
    @smortonmedia 11 днів тому

    I am struggling a bit on the cylinder part. This seems to work SOMETIMES... mostly when I'm using millimeters. But when I'm using meters, it just doesn't seem to work. I made my cylinder have a diameter of 5 meters and applied the scale. I add 3 loops cuts, select the middle one, and use Alt+S =(-5)+2 and then it just gives me -3... I understand that adding (-5)+2 does in fact = -3... but why is it not collapsing to 0 if the diameter is already 5m? But when I do something random like a cylinder of 2.36 and do Alt+S =(-2.36)+1.45 then.... I get 1.45 ...I am at a loss as to why whole numbers are like not working

    • @SFE-Viz
      @SFE-Viz 10 днів тому

      That is a mistake on my part, my sincere apologies (see pinned comment). As I mention in the video - Scale is a multiplier. As a result addition or subtraction won't work. The correct way is to use S for regular scale in this instance and the formula for the advanced mode is: New diameter/old diameter. So in your case: S -> =3/5 That will give you the precise 3m diameter. Again, very sorry.

    Very good video, thank you. However, I am struggling with more complex questions. I.e. I have an object with a curved side (imagine a curved wall), and then I want to make it thicker by an exact amount (imagine adding a base to the wall (Sockel) with a specific thickness). Or, similar, but still different: I have a complex shape (i.e. a wooden cupboard with some details like cutouts or additions to the edges), and now I want to make the base of this cupboard 1cm wider than the sides on all edges, including the cutouts/additions. I have not yet figured out how to do this in a smart way in Blender. Translated into Blender language, I am basically trying to extrude or scale edges based on their individual normals by a certain amount. The closest thing I found is the "Extrude indiviual faces" in the "Edit Mesh Tools", but the problem there is that the extruded faces are not connected on one side and overlap on the other side when used with complex shapes. Edit: To make it clearer, I just constructed an example, see: freeimage.host/i/dZDlPv2 It is just a cube with some subdivisions, where I extruded every other column of faces, to make the base a complex shape, and then used the "Extrude individual faces" on the bottom row of faces. On the right side how it gets created by "Extrude individual faces", on the left side how I want it (adjusted manually). Another Edit: I found the solution. "Offset edges" in the Edit mesh tools does exactly what I was looking for!

    • @nadbri
      @nadbri 7 днів тому

      I had to come back here to correct / improve what I found at the end of my last comment: There is actually a tool in vanilla Blender which does exactly what I wanted: "Extrude along normals". You can get to it by long-clicking on the extrude tool in the toolbar.

      Having snapping and merge turned on is a great tip to get precisely to another edge, thanks. Unfortunately we still can't get past the next edge without creating additional faces in one go. A solution would be to snap to the edge with auto-merge on and then repeat the extrusion further in. :)

    • @SFE-Viz
      @SFE-Viz 29 днів тому

      Do you mean on the vertical plates at 16:20? Booleans can be hard to troubleshoot. Of the bat I'd try to edge slide the supporting edge loops individually with g+g until they visually don't overlap with vertices on the holes anymore. Also double check if the boolean modifier is above the bevel and in the bevel modifier under geometry try to toggle clamp overlap on and off, see if that works. And the classic: in edit mode on the plate press A to select everything and M -> "merge by distance" to make sure no double vertices found their way into the model. They're pesky sometimes :)

      This seems to be a common struggle, and I will add it to my list. In the meantime try this: Make sure the scale of your object is applied (ctrl + A -> apply scale), then i to inset and type the amount you wish to inset and enter. Then open up the last operation panel on the bottom left and check that "offset even" is turned on and "offset relative" turned off. That should give you the desired result.

In the compositor, you can duplicate the Render Layers node, and pick the different View Layer to get access to the alternate environment lighting.

      That's a great tip, thank you. Rendering with multiple view layers opens up a whole new world of options for compositing and would deserve it's own video. I might add it to the list.

    hi, just a suggestion, do you know Bonsai (ex-BlenderBim) An add-on for beautiful, detailed, and data-rich OpenBIM with Blender ...

      Haven't looked at it in a while, but should maybe give it another go, see what's changed. Thanks for the reminder. Definitely a very good add-on, especially for professional use. I do consider it a rather advanced tool, though, not exactly for beginners.

    Just a little heads up: There is currently a bug in Blender 4.2.1 within the Glare Node in the compositor, where it does not work correctly and damages the colour information of the image on high resolution images/ renders. This applies to GPU-mode only!!! It works fine when the compositor is switched to using the CPU, you can switch it at any time without re-rendering. The bug has been reported and is being looked at. I'll leave this pinned here until it's been resolved in an official release, in case one of you encounters issues with it.

    Just watched this and your precision video and learnt a lot from both even after using blender for a lot of years.

    Very informative and useful, thanks very much. (PS 4.2 won't work on my 2015 Macbook but OK on my Win10 desktop)

      Thanks. Gotta say that I had some performance issues with 4.2.0 too, even on my modern rig. It's gotten better with 4.2.1 - should test it on my 2014 one of these days 😁
