Hank's Backyard
United States
Приєднався 15 бер 2020
Originally this channel started out as a way to document (and remember) everything going on with Hank, the other emus, the chickens, garden, house restoration, etc. But it has morphed a bit into a way to stay connected to family and friends as well as a great way to record what I've done here.
Also, when I shuffle off this mortal coil, my son (and his kids) will have something of a road map to figure out how all this stuff works - because he's really not paying attention right now :)

A Day in the Life of an Emu Farm

It's been a minute since we've done a bit of a walkabout whilst doing some farm chores. Today we do a tiny bit of work, but mostly just have fun with our favorite animals - the Emus.
The Big Emu Barn Cleanup Project
Переглядів 9314 днів тому
Our barn has been a bit bad in the past, but never this bad. It's just horrendous. So we're digging in and getting everything sorted for the new year. Strangely, using the pressure washer is actually one of my favorite jobs on the farm. And, as it turns out, popular among the neighbor kids as well.
Mud Baths and Water Troughs for Emus

In this episode we tackle the difficult task of getting water to our Emus through our rain water system while employing a solar pump to keep bad guys out (mosquitoes) and cycling the water for purity. And, Sam takes a mud bath.
Introducing Baby Emus to the Group

The two new girls have been "meeting" the older ones through the fence for a few months now and it's finally time for them to take the plunge. Mostly this has gone well for us here at Hank's Backyard, but a few times it really didn't end well. Spoiler alert - this one went okay, but it's always fun to watch.
Fall Tasks and Farm Tour
Переглядів 197Місяць тому
We were lucky to have a lot of the folks that have been helping on the farm here for the past two weekends and I just wanted to document what we did. In summary: We built some new fences, added water troughs with solar pumps fed from rainwater capture throughout the farm, put up an electric fence to fend off racoons and other bad guys, and of course, we did it all with the help of a mob of Emus

General Update - Plus an Emu Attack, Rat Snakes in the Barn, and an Epic Thunderstorm
Shelby is too cute for words! But I still love little Bean and Rocco (who both don't mind to bond with her) and all your emu babies. Don't know why Harry is being 'zoned' out but I'm sure things will settle down at some point. Crumbs you got good weather, we're pretty cold here in Europe but today is a nice, sunny day.
1.) The local DA can file Hate Crime charges against those picking on Poor Harry (and that INCLUDES the owner of the farm because your video title says "...everybody hate Harry...")!! 2.) Their teenagers, and like hoomans in high school they have a clique. 3.) What is the poor dogs name, Shelby?, as you tend to mumble. 🥰 4.) Did your neighbor give the dog to you? 5.) No, you have no idea what cold is. It went down to the high 30's in Florida!! 6.) "detente" -- showing off using a college word... 7.) "The playground is a dangerous place..." -- which is why the emus have Morgan & Morgan on speed dial (and M&M is prepared to make an emergency response to hold the farm owner accountable)!!!
We actually found Shelby in a circus troupe when they stopped at a supermarket in the small town that I live in.
Egg-citing
Right?? I mean, Right?!? How fun is that!
Love the ostrich's. Xx
Did those Ostriches sneak into my video again - dang, I keep trying to keep them out, but sometimes they do a photo bomb on the Emus.
Ohmigosh, here we go: 1.) This is SUPPOSED to be a "G" rated channel, and you're showing Poor Jackie having sex!?!! 😖 2.) (Never mind Poor Jackie's privacy... ☹ ) 3.) Making compost --- Thrilling -- Zzzzzz.... 🥱 4.) "Bean -- No so much..." -- Make no mistake about it, Bean is your #1 Protection (Rocco is Backup). Apologize to Bean!! 5.) "It's going to be freezing tonight" -- as he sprays the poor emus with water.
Sweet to see Rocco and Bean so relaxed around the emus. As for the quiche, yuck! Bet I guess that Tarzan would eat them like he does the ostrich but still...garden is looking great! Nice helper you got there too 😃
I kind of feel like that too with the emu eggs - not sure if I can go through with it. But if I do, I'm sure to make a video - so I'll definitely share.
Yay Eggs! We should talk about those eggs 😊 She will keep laying so there will be a bunch.
We've talked about this off line - but I haven't seen any more - I'm about to do a walkabout this afternoon and see if there are any hidden caches.
@ sounds good. Hope you guys are staying warm.
Blessings to the family
Thanks Shawn - good to hear from you.
Not much of a Treat. Where's the Blueberries and Bananas!?!! :)
The important part is the sharing ...
BTW: It is vitally important that any emu supervises when you are applying tape to the fence post, because they don't want you to hurt yourself (as evidenced by the cuts on your hand!)... 🥰
I know - I didn't realize that until after the video went up - half of them were from wrestling with my Chihuahua (Bean) and the other half from the Emus - either way, it's a dangerous job over here in Austin :)
How does your electric tractor do when the temperature is freezing?
Actually it had a hard time starting this morning - thanks for reminding me that my diesel tractor has a hard time starting when it's cold ...
Oh Boy!! Passion Vines -- We all jes LUV Plant Videos!! Did you surprise your mom with a Plant Video for Christmas!?!! (I'll bet she just LOVED it!!! (Not!) 😊
All my next videos are going to be plant videos - just for you my friend.
I Can Not Thank You Enough -- Let me say that again -- Thank You So Much for NOT responding to my email asking if you were OK and made it through the tornadoes -- You are TOO Kind to me!!! 🤐
Opps, you know I love ya - been a bit absent on my emails and youtube replies as I've noticed you have been :)
Hank has the FREEDOM to do as he PLEASES!!! Always Remember: It's HANK'S Channel, Not Your's!!!
I spoke to Hank and he is a bit offended that you mistook Harry for him - he'll forgive it this one time :)
They are such nosy babies. Wishing you all a great new year xxxx take care xxxx
Especially Sam - he can't help himself - has to get into everything. Good thing he's so cute :)
Happy New Year John, Mason, Hank and the babies at ye olde emu farm! Hank is just adorable as is Sam. Must be fun going out and seeing what they get up to. Everything is looking really great and I'm sure you will have a wonderful garden this year if you can keep your buddies out. Thanks for taking us along!
Thanks @svilvalc - I might change our name to Ye Olde Emu Farm - that's pretty funny. Happy New Year!
Wow, what a job! You and Mason have done fantastic work and I, for one, am fully impressed. Maybe you could be hired to come and clean our houses but you can leave the power washer at home please. That little guy helping you was so cute and a big help. Have a very happy Christmas and a grand, great New Year!
The pressure washer is actually great fun and strangely satisfying to do - happy holidays to you as well.
IF you gave the baby emus a proper bathroom (or even an outhouse) you wouldn't have had this issue!!! 🥰 P.S. Better call Jake from State Farm to get collision insurance for those crazy speedng emus!
You do sooo much to keep your babies happy and I'm sure they appreciate it even if they bite you off and on. I hope they realize how lucky they are to have you as their Daddy!
My goodness, they sure are rattled! But we still love them.
The pool party starts when you go inside ;) lol.
Jackie has taken the mantle
You could keep her in a smaller enclosure/pen with the rest of the flock, so they can’t get to her
She's separated for now - but I fear she might be a little lonely - so a separate, but still with the rest of the flock might be a good solution.
Thank you for looking after this chicken, really sweet and kind of you. I don't know why the others do this but best to keep her separated for now.
We have her in the garage for now - pooping on our newly cleaned floor :) But she's doing much better - we let her out for just a bit to see what would happen after a couple of days and everyone just started picking on her again so we're going to have come up with something long term for sure. Maybe separate her into a "peaceful" flock at some point.
So cute! Really enjoyed seeing the new babies come out and enjoy the pasture. Bean and Rocco loved it too! Bet you had fun getting them back inside
We actually left them out - everybody was getting along fine - we got lucky (again) with the integration - no lost feathers :)
Little Bean is the man, he let the girls know what's what lol . xo
I'm ready
Your place was already incredibly amazing. I love what you have done. Can you tell me about the solar pumps you got for the water troughs and if they help the water stay cleaner????
Thanks Regina - the pumps definitely help with water quality over time. I have a more specific video on those water troughs and the solar pumps coming out where I'll go into some detail, but I wanted to give them a little time to see if they are going to hold up in a bit of a harsh environment.
@ awesome. I’ll keep an eye your for that video. Well, I watch all of your videos anyway. The emus are growing up so fast. They look amazing.
it's the feeling that counts!
Hope springs eternal 😂
How DARE you call Bean a "tiny dog"!!!
It's just started!
Too CHEAP to buy Poor Hank (whose channel this is!) a warm jacket!!!
He borrows mine :)
This was a great update, thanks! I loved how Rocco made a beeline for the neighbour's dog with Bean in hot pursuit, ready to give his all. Lovely to see all the emus, babies, medium to big and look forward to the great integration. And you are right, the yard needs tidying up but that will come plus the chickens look terrific. Thanks again!
Rocco loves being over there with the big dog - Bean too! That's hopefully where we'll move the baby emus here in a couple of weeks when they move outside. And, yes, cleanup, always cleanup - but we're getting there.
thank god your not my neighbor
😊😂🐝🐝🐝🐝
You are wishful thinking if you think they are going to move. There are hundreds of them under ground and they have a queen making hundreds more of them.
When we finally were able to dig up the (dead) nest, it was pretty big - like basketball size - and you're right, no way to move them without professional equipment - gone now thankfully.
Foam em, you don't have to get to close.
Bifen IT and Tempo early morning or late night. Sometimes you cannot burn. Never tried diesel, but Bifen IT and Tempo - does the job quickly, Tempo is the best in my opinion. Always carry a can of wasp spray in case you need to spray any active flying ones.
Diesel fuel down the hole, nothing lives inside diesel
We used old gas that we had - hated to do it because of the environmental impact, but it was the only thing that worked at the end of the day.
@ that is the thing about diesel and gas it originally came from the Earth and it has a smaller impact than what you think. I was a Roughneck for years and I still use it for numerous reasons
Gas at night
We did it in the AM, but yeah, that did it.
spray at dusk or dawn when all in nest
The reason why these YELLOWJACKETS are so dangerous is because they are so concealed. THEY CAN KILL CHILDREN AND PETS. EXTREMELY VISIOUS. Not like wasp or bees. CALL A PRO.
Good point - they were under a large wood pile so they hadn't really had to interact with anything for quite a while I'm guessing - we ended up doing a few of the things suggested here and they are gone now.
Get a good shop vac put the hose as close to the entrance as possible before they get active in the morning. Put water and dish soap in the vac bucket before starting which will assist with eliminating all vacuumed up wasps. Just a suggestion.
Good suggestion on the soapy water in the shop vac - will give that a shot.
Be patient, this has and will work!
I am guessing there is a very large nest beneath the surface. Spraying them only kills the ones directly in line/contact with spray. There is hundreds if not a thousand below the surface and the ones out foraging that you are not spraying. Also - you ALWAYS (😅) spray at night when they have settled down. You may want to (at night) clear away the debris so you can see a defined hole/entrance. The next night shove a garden hose in all the way (do not clog the hose) and turn it on for a while. They say you can pour very soapy water down the hole too.
Good advice (the night thing) - at this point they are on alert - can't even get within 20 feet of the nest without getting attacked. Sheesh. I'll try to garden hose thing as well.
These are ground wasps and impossible to kill with spray. I know people who have used gasoline, but that is also dangerous . Best suggestion - call an exterminator. And don’t go near the nest until you know they are inside. The time of day is Dawn or dusk. Do NOT relocate them, they are vicious and have become overpopulated in our environment.
Going to try the gasoline thing next - nothing else is working so far.
You're a little to chill bout those wasps. This is the set up of the next Florida man story to go viral for fafo.
Normally yellow jackets are the aggressive ones Wasp have always been laid back. But these mat be a different breed. You have no choice but to spray them. And some will.move on.
Confirmed that these were yellow jackets - we did spray and they are no more - sad, but had to happen.
My sister in Fla has a nest in the thick brush close to the house, she keeps spraying but can't get close enough to find exactly where "their" home is, or is it actually in the ground? She's can't find anyone to come locate and kill them either!
I'm trying all kinds of stuff but they are winning the battle at this point - they have posted sentries so as soon as I get anywhere near the nest they attack - crazy aggressive. I may have to call an exterminator. We'll see after today.
Please keep in mind that this is a "G" rated channel. You should at least warn viewers before the Terrifying Monster appears at 7 min 3 sec! Did Hank and Sam book for the hills because of the wasps? 🥰 You have all these other signs up, you should have put up a sign "No Wasps Vacancy" and "Wasps Not Allowed!" P.S. I'm glad you impressed yourself with piling the logs!
Mason definitely had a look going there - road warrior style. I know it's silly about the wood, but I was quite proud of that ...
I had a massive colony near my apple trees in the garden. Wait until night, full bottle of sunlight dish soap, then garden hose at full throttle. No stings, no more wasps
John and Mason, PLEASE be careful around these wasps. I got stung once on my head and it was enough to put me off wasps. And I thought before you said it, look out for little Bean! He'd definitely be a goner and Rocco would be in a bad state too. I don't feel bad about you guys using nuclear means to get rid of them, they're nasty. By the way, little boys run screaming too, not just little girls.
I was sore for a while from the multiple bites for a couple days - that was a weird group of wasps for sure - I've never had a nest that was soooo aggressive. The good news is we took suggestions from many of the comments here and the nest is no more. I feel a bit bad because they are beneficial to the environment, but this group just had to go.
