Nine Boards That Caught My Eye for 24-25
After demoing 40 boards over the course of four days at two different demo events in Utah, these are the boards I haven't been able to review longterm yet, but can't wait to get more time on. Remember there are a lot of boards I loved and reviewed. Check out our back catalog for reviews of those boards.

All Mountain vs. Powder Board in the Backcountry

    Hi there, thanks for the great reviews. I am 175cm / 155lbs / Boot size US 9.5. I most ride in Hokkaido so usually deep powder, not very steep and many trees. Which size would you recommend? Thank you 🙏🏼

  • @vokintrob
    @vokintrob 6 днів тому

    I got the previous version of PW+. This board is very average at all usual scenarios. I would even say not interesting. And don`t even try curving because it doesn't have enough edge and support on the tail. But I recommend it for some reasons. And I`ll explain why. The only situation when it works better than 99.9% is a deep forest with a mid or large slope at powder day. How good it is for this, just as much it`s terrible for everything else. Anyway here you don`t need riding extremely fast, edge control, float on the flatty fields, to be stable on different snow condition or something where this board sucks or just "ok". First of all you have to do a million fast turns under the snow to control your speed between trees, and PW+ can do it easy without pressure precisely because this board is short and has a no tail feeling what even you can`t do on a long snowboard which just gets you tired as f**k or can kill you against a tree if the snow condition is very heavy. Another fact is very easy jumps on a short board with no fear of digging in snow and It floats on a very low speed. The first days I don't trust it on landings and I was always ready to take a tumble because I use to ride 6-10cm longer boards. Those who ride it understand me. The nose of this board seem unusually short like you try to freeride on a street\jib board. But then it becomes the norm. All this reasons make this board a some kind of Jeep Wrangler. Good chois if you want to explore unpopular forest part of resort or get lost somewhere with stupid friends or just gives a lot of fun and truly skateboard feeling if you ride on pillows between trees. I always take this board like the second one if the place is good for this style and the weather gives a suitable snow condition. literally this option is actual not more than 10 days per season in my region especially if I have a chois of few boards. But if it happened, it`s always great.

    Hey there. My stats are pretty similar to yours (6'5'', 200lbs, 11.5boots). Curious as to why you went with 159 instead of 162.

    • @Drift-Products
      @Drift-Products 7 днів тому

      I've ridden the Standard and the Uninc in both sizes and enjoy either one. Long term I kept the Uninc in the 162 for more aggressive, high speed riding, and kept the Standard in 159 as a more playful mess-around board. You're a little bigger than me, depending on how you intend to use it, I think you'd be pleased with the 162.

    How does it compare to nitro team/ nitro team pro? I'm considering transitioning from nitro team to this one, because nitro team gets kinda unstable at high speed carving, is it worth the upgrade?

    • @Drift-Products
      @Drift-Products 7 днів тому

      The team and team pro are more all-mountain freestyle, maybe a little more versatile if you want to be doing tricks and hitting the park. This has way more camber, a bit stiffer and pretty focused on carving and charging hard. If go hard and aren't worried about the park as much, the Pantera is rad.

    • @rauliuxaa

      @@Drift-Products I don't really do park, only into carving and maybe some pow from time to time. Any idea how this compares to the 24/25 model? Was wondering should i look the older model, considering it can be quite a way cheaper than the 2025 model

    I came to the same conclusions as you. This board was fabulous while carving but I did not like it when doing side hits and when the snow got choppy. It just got bucked around too hard and was heavy and unforgiving for jumps. I'm curious to see how you would like the Stranda Biru. I have a Dancehaul and Warca and would like a tad stiffer, more powerful version off the Dancehaul (with better edge hold so the Pro is out) that is not overly demanding. I think the Biru fits this bill. It's also even wider which is good for my size 12.

    Looking at this or the Uninc version. I live on the west coast and you can have sticky deep snow, ice, chunder, and alot of steeps. Which of the two would feel more comfortable and reliable in that context? It seems like everyone praises pure camber and denounces anything with rocker in it. I was considering the Gremlin if going a nearly pure camber board and not the standard uninc.

    • @Drift-Products
      @Drift-Products 10 днів тому

      I think either one is fine for what you described, it just depends on how aggressive you want to ride. The Uninc version wants to be pushed a little harder than the normal version but the bow of camber isn't excessive. I love them both and would be my top recommendation for a do everything board right now.

    • @Drift-Products
      @Drift-Products 10 днів тому

      Mostly width. It's not a very wide board, even the 162w is narrower than almost every other comparable board I rode. The extra length will give a touch. more stability and float. The 160 would feel a little quicker edge to edge and a little more turny.

    Great content, thanks for getting me stoked about the upcoming season! Have you ridden the Nitro Dinghy? I’ve been on long, stiff, camber dominant boards since the late 80s but am intrigued by VS boards. I ride a Gnu Mullair 161 and love it for bombing and carving. Ideally I’d like to add something with better LA powder float, more nimble in tight trees and a little more playful for side hits - but still be able to hammer the gas and lay trenches with confidence. The 150 Dinghy seems like it could fit the bill (or K2 excavator?). At 6.1 185 with size 10.5s I’d appreciate any recommendations for this elusive unicorn. Thanks!

Of course throwing in the 164 Dart for the bigger human /low angle boys would be a nice cherry on top. Appreciate the hard work!

    I know what you mean about being skeptical of changes to boards that were pretty much perfect as is. I have the original Mind Expander (flat between the bindings with a long mellow rocker past the front insert) and think it lost some of its magic when they added camber to it. My sense is it might not be too severe on the Storm Chaser, as they didn't really change the long gradual rocker zone it has. But regardless, I don't think Jones should have changed the Storm Chaser since they already have camrocker on all of their other boards.

      It does make it more versatile, but that’s kinda my complaint. It was the one board in their line that was 100% unapologetically for powder. They have 3-4 other boards that are good in powder but more versatile. Why does this one need to be? But again I couldn’t wrong. Maybe it’s only better with no negative trades.

    You briefly touched on it when you were talking about Cardiff more broadly, but I'm curious why you'd go with the Goat over something like the Bonsai or Swell. I'd imagine for your use case those would be more applicable than a directional twin-ish shape like the Goat.

      That's a fair questions. I guess just to try something a little more freeride/all mountain oriented vs pow oriented. I'd be happy to get on those others too. I've only just recently dipped my toes in the Cardiff waters after years of alternating between Amplid and Koruas. Gotta say man, Cardiff is really onto something. The sidecuts are just as dialed as anything from Korua, the construction and build materials is up there Amplid, and the bases are near Moss/Gentemstick levels. I've been thoroughly impressed with my Powgoda and Bonsai and am constantly talking myself out of getting a Swell solid or a Bonsai split.

    Couple of questions. Thinking about treating myself and was wondering if you had any thoughts on the Powgoda Pro Carbon? Do you think it might be worth the extra coin? Also, I see they offer Phantom Glide for their boards, thoughts? Thanks.

    • @Drift-Products
      @Drift-Products 22 дні тому

      Great questions. First, these boards are phenomenal. As for pro carbon, for me it would be hard to justify the price. If this is primarily a pow board, I can't imagine the stiffer carbon version would make much of a difference. They say it's mostly for improved performance in variable terrain and I thought the powgoda was pretty good in variable conditions and flawless in pow. On one hand, if you have the coin why not? It would be cool to have 1 of 15 boards being produced. On the other hand, right now you can get the older model Powgoda AND a Crane or Goat for the same price as that one carbon Powgoda, which would be amazing. As for phantom glide, haven't tried it yet. I need to but I actually really like waxing my boards so haven't got around to it yet. If Cardiff is using it, I'm sure it's legit. Those guys aren't messing around with lame stuff. Let me know what you decide!

    Hi. Great short! I have the Home Town Hero. I like it a lot. A real all mountain ride. Handles the ice, crud & soft snow. Also rides well switch. Feels solid under foot - I think mostly because it has a fair bit of camber. How do you think the High Fidelity compares to the HTH?

    • @Drift-Products

      similar but stiffer, more aggressive, more big mountain. The High Fidelity is made specifically for the fellas tackling Natural Selection. Ididn't hate it but it was pretty clearly more board than I need most of the time. I think for most people the HTH would make more sense.

    Thanks really. My snowboarding life is cambered Nitros. First crazy Naturals 159 of '99, then the board of my life Supernaturals 163, still rocking even damaged, then Torque 164 the beast, Slash 171 s shape, a magic carpet in powder, an used Shogun 169 now feeling a bit hard aging, but all still with me (except Naturals). I want the Pantera, I need the prigressive sidecut and the full camber. In my 57 I was dreaming abou it but at 90kg, 198 lbs specs tell not 163 (65-85), maybe 166 wide, but I wear US9 boots... Even if for lay down carve width is precious... So should I go for the 166 Wide? Last thing it seems a bit grey, not black... Btw, tried Stranda Shorty 169 with big rockered tip flapping in the tracks, I don't like this trend; apart from the rocky Torque if you apply pressure in powder also a cambered board slightly flexes up and creates a rocker... I also use a nice Furberg Freeride 165, rocker-camber-rocker, great passing from tracks to powder, but carving it doesn't give me the emotions of a cambered and progressive shape...

    I’m 66yrs old (27 boarding 0 skiing), 6foot, 160lbs and I ride my 56 dart everyday at Stowe VT (133 days, 2.3 million vertical feet last season, ‘23-24). Cons - very few. Yes, I damaged my tail jabbing it into what I thought was snow but was rock. Minimal damage that doesn’t affect the board’s performance and doesn’t seem to be getting worse or delaminating after a full season of being damaged. That tail makes switch difficult on soft groomers and impossible (for me) in thick pow or the woods. The short tail will not save you on a botched jump. Its big nose can chatter when charging super hard while carving. Yes it’s a bit slow to turn in deep power/trees as compared to shorter dedicated powder boards. Yes it’s heavier than many powder boards. Its base isn’t the fastest. The base and carbon models are not even close to the same board with the carbon board light and difficult to carve hard. It’s hard to find, rarely on sale or discounted. Now for the positives. Its heaviness provides great stability in ugly conditions and east coast icy crud. Its width gives it good float and helps keep my size 11 boots off the snow. The split tail helps with float, but is also a lot of fun when carving - bending and acting like a rudder. Its long side cut makes carving amazing and fast. The camber locks in and feels very stable on steep icy trails. This is a perfect everyday ride for strong fast riders at resorts with a combo of groomers and trees. It’s so much fun on groomers that days I used dread riding (hard icy groomers - no pow whatsoever) I can still enjoy this board’s exceptional carving. Looking forward to season four on the most fun board I’ve ridden.
