"Swan Song," by Robert McCammon (Book Review)
In a world devastated by total nuclear war, a young girl named Swan has the power within her to reawaken the dead earth and rescue mankind from the brink of extinction. But another force walks the land--an ancient power of chaos bent on destroying every last vestige of hope: the Man with the Scarlet Eye. He rallies the armies roaming what was once America, turning them against Swan and her protectors in a final confrontation between good and evil.
"Swan Song," Robert McCammon's 1987 post-apocalyptic horror-fantasy novel has often been compared with Stephen King's "The Stand," and while there are definite similarities between the two, in the opinion of this reviewer, "Swan Song" is decidedly the better novel. McCammon's portrait of a devastated America and the survivors who emerge from the ruins--some to rebuild and others to exploit--lingers in the mind of the reader long after the final page is turned. Josh, Swan, Sister, Colonel Macklin, Roland Croninger, and a large cast of supporting characters, are wonderfully realized, and McCammon expertly weaves their storylines together, culminating in a finale that truly satisfies.
Coming in at over 900 pages, "Swan Song" is not a quick read; but the first time I read it, the story and its characters drew me in so completely that I finished it in three days. It has since become one of my all-time favorite novels, and is one of the few books I truly love.
At long last, "Swan Song" is being adapted into a TV series. It's about time...just do it right! See my video on the upcoming adaptation here: ua-cam.com/video/CsuYPOatOBo/v-deo.html

The Atlantean Archive focuses on books, short stories, movies, and television shows of the past, up through the 1980s, although we may cover more current things from time to time as well. I also hope to bring you interviews with some of the stars and creators who helped shape the culture that influenced my generation. My emphasis is on horror, science fiction, adventure, fantasy, movies, and TV shows that time forgot, general 70s and 80s nostalgia, and (occasionally) more serious historical content. "The Gods of Mars" is the second entry in Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic fantasy/science-fiction/action/adventure "Mars" or "Barsoom" series, and picks up ten years after the cliffhanger ending of the ground-breaking first novel in the series, "A Princess of Mars." "A Touch of the Ruthless" is an original short story that I wrote in 2021 for an online story competition. The rules were simple: Write a dystopian or post-apocalypse story, 2000 words maximum, must mention a gold locket somewhere in the story. This is what I came up with: a tale of two sisters left to survive in a frozen world after their parents are killed, and what the older must do to prote...

    Great review! I decided to read the Barsoom series after seeing Cosmos in which Carl Sagan spoke so passionately about these stories that he loved as a child. So I started to read A Princess and soon I too was in love with the world of Barsoom. I have read the whole series by now. I hope you won't stop at the first three books: most of the ones that come after that are awesome too. My favourites of the series are in fact the fifth book The Chessmen of Mars, and the sixth The Mastermind of Mars.

      Yes, these books are amazing, especially when you consider that Burroughs is almost single-handedly responsible for creating modern science-fiction and space opera. I should be posting a review of "The Warlord of Mars" soon. I'm in the middle of some other projects at the moment, but I do plan on returning to the Mars series soon. I've heard good stuff about "Chessmen" as well, so it'll be interesting to see where that goes. I wish I had encountered Burroughs when I was younger. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I been slowly reading Swan Song for over a year and am about 61% through and it is really good. It is bleak so now than I have to put it down but it does grab you from page one. That openoing scene with the president lighting looking into the flame on the match is so powerful in a way that I can't put my finger on. It is already one the vary few fantasy books I have liked. The list also includes The Stand.

    • @TheAtlanteanArchive
      @TheAtlanteanArchive 29 днів тому

      Agreed. The opening is powerful, probably because of the bleak, imminent doom feeling that it conveys. McCammon does an excellent job of conveying the imagery of total destruction and societal collapse in this book. I can understand why you would take it in sections.

    I am very interested by this. Having recently started reading Stephen King's books and have read The Stand and am nearly finished with 11//22/63, then people started recommending Swan Song, which I've downloaded onto my Kindle and is next up! So, I will have read it by the time this series comes out. I would echo thoughts about T.V. companies doing these things justice. I'm a massive fan of The Mists of Avalon and would _love_ to see a decent version of it on the screen, having read it no end of times, but I would be very wary that they'd cut corners and make a total mess of it!

      Thanks for the comments! I'm hoping that with McCammon himself involved in the project, they'll turn out something faithful to the novel. Of course, it also needs the right cast to carry the story. I hope you enjoy reading "Swan Song"! Like "The Stand," it's a hefty read, but the story and characters really draw you in and, unlike "The Stand" (in the opinion of many, anyway), it has a strong, satisfying conclusion. Happy reading!

    I came to ERB through a strange route; from reading Dale Pollock's *"Skywalking: The Life and Films of George Lucas"* - that listed Lucas's literary influences - I felt to properly understand all the nuances of Star Wars, I *had* to read the inspirations that formed its genesis. As well as ERB's Martian Series, I bought the adapted novelisations of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon, and Frank Herbert's Dune. (E E Doc Smith's Lensman saga is the next on my list)

Indeed in Madagascar and India there are some animals called lemurs. Probably Blavatsky thought that it would be cool to imagine a lost continent as the bridge between both, and since these were remote lands in 19th century, and sea bottom was a mystery, then no one would fact check her. But then Alfred Wegener proposed the theory of continental drift which brought lots of resistance from scientists. After all it would render papers obsolete,band who was this Wegener, a simple meteorologist in Iceland to propose something expert geologists did not propose. After WWII when sea bottom was mapped in low resolution (one pixel is more than 3 miles wide) which we have today, it became evident Wegener was right. Under continental drift, India, once attached to Madagascar, moved to its current position. It means no lost continent. Also, there is a lack of interest of theosophy to visit Richat structure, a place in Mauritania that fits all the descriptions of Plato. 23 miles wide concentric circles, salt shows it had sea from water, mountains in the north, an opening to the sea in the south, and stones made of 3 colors that locals use to build houses today. You can see it in Google Earth. There is not such huge structure under the sea in the Atlantic or Mediterranean sea. Even with 3+ miles resolution you should see at least a blurry patch of these circles but no. There is nothing like that in sea bottom maps. Richat structure even shows signs of water flow in the sand and the wavy dunes you see in the bottom of a water flow. These dunes are miles wide, suggesting a truly cataclysmic water flow. TSD had its chance to find something science could not. Instead it went the path of fiction, and the universe loves to prove humans wrong. I understand followers of theosophy. TSD is such dense reading with unfamiliar jargon and names organized in a timeline of spirits and physical manifestations that outshines LOTR. But facts prove it is fiction. It would be cool to think that ancient ones buried pyramids to protect them from the evil corruption of pagan Turanian mobs that defiled sculptures and wall inscriptions to add sexual themes, and devastated civilizations. Probably franchises like Star Wars got inspired too by adding the Yuuzan Vong, the world enders civilization. But to be honest they seem too underpowered and primitive to face powerful Jedis. I understand why people want TSD to be historical. It is a great fiction book.

    Hi, as for the Zodanga raiding part, Burroughs himseld was very well aware of this contradiction. I hope you make it until book 8 of the series, "Swords of Mars". :) No, John Carter is not perfect. That's why I'm surprised when people call him "vanilla". From France, I've been a huge fan of the Burroughs Barsoom books since 1988. My favorite is book 7, "A Fighting Man of Mars", but I love them all. You can sense Burroughs cracked out more Tarzan books, but that his heart was always on Barsoom. Excellent video!

      I've finished the first three books in the series and should be posting a review of the second (The Gods of Mars) shortly. In my opinion, "Gods" was even better than "Princess." I'm working on some other stuff at the moment ("Dune Messiah"), but will return to the Mars series in the future. Yes, "vanilla" is not a term I would apply to John Carter at all! He's pretty hardcore at times. Thanks for commenting! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 🙂

    Poor Clark Aston Smith the forgotten grandfather of modern fiction. At least he got to live a full life. I think cuz he quit writing when both we lost Howard and Lovecraft I think he didn't create an iconic character people can grasp like Howard had Conan n Lovecraft has Cthulhu think that's part of it. RIP to all three.

      It's tragic that Smith has largely fallen into obscurity. I covered one of his short stories previously, but I need to get back to him at some point. Yes, I agree that the loss of his friends took a lot out of him (along with the loss of his parents). Thanks for watching and commenting!

    This movie was made years and years before I was even born but I have loved it since I saw it. I'm fond of older horror TV so of course I sought out Kolchak. I bought the DVDs before I even saw the show because they were on sale and after that I saw the movies. Since I'm from Vegas and I grew up with Dark Shadows reruns on Scifi it's pretty much perfect for me. I liked the remake series too, tho I have a lot of complaints. About 15 years ago I thought Alex O'Loughlin and Dan Lauria would have been great casting choices. But I do like Stuart Townsend and Cotter Smith Anyway, great video. I'm always happy to see Kolchak getting some well-deserved attention. I agree with everything you said. My thoughts exactly. I may not have grown up with this movie and it may be before my time but it's so good and so fun to watch that I can't help but love it

      Thanks for commenting! It's wonderful to see younger people discovering films from this era. Many of them were made on lower budgets, but they were often well acted and extremely atmospheric, with more of a storyline than we tend to get in films today. I personally think The Night Stalker is the second best vampire film ever made, following close behind Toby Hooper's "Salem's Lot." I grew up with Dark Shadows as well (although in reruns). Johnathan Frid was excellent as Barnabas Collins. Unfortunately, I only saw one or two episodes of the Night Stalker reboot. Thanks again for the comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

    King endorsing it is a kiss of death

    So now, the movie gets released to a streaming service that I don't and WON'T even subscribe to just for the purpose of seeing this remake. Not every adaptation of King's is that great, but the 1979 version of Salem's Lot was magnificently eerie as hell! I doubt that the new one will be able to match it, especially with three strikes against it already! Way to go, Warner!

    • @TheAtlanteanArchive
      @TheAtlanteanArchive 3 місяці тому

      This is why I continue to think that the executives believe it's not a good movie, despite King's praise for it. I just don't see them turning down the big dollars that a long-awaited Stephen King adaptation could bring them from a theatrical release otherwise. But then I see some of the garbage that does get released, that there's no way the studio could have thought was actually good, but they went ahead and released it anyway...and I don't know. Like you, I don't need or want another streaming service either. I see a lot of people signing up for a trial subscription just to see this movie and then canceling.

      @@TheAtlanteanArchive King's opinion on what is and isn't a good movie is not a reliable indicator. My assumption is that it's got a lot of unpopular social commentary and even they know it will not do well. King and his social circles will praise it for catering to "modern audiences."

    • @TheAtlanteanArchive
      @TheAtlanteanArchive 2 місяці тому

      @markh995 I REALLY hope they left the social commentary and virtue signaling out of it. God knows that stuff has ruined enough already. From the cast listing on IMDB, they've given one character a sex change, but I don't know of anything else so far.

    Why does the narrator of this keep saying HBO Max? Isnt it simply known as Max now? And id love to know warners reasons for just streaming this highly anticipated movie? Why not put it out theatrically, as originally intended? 🤔

      I keep thinking that the studio doesn't believe that this is a very good movie, otherwise I don't see them turning down the big dollars that a long-awaited Stephen King adaptation could potentially draw. Maybe they're just outsmarting themselves, though, thinking that they'll increase subscriptions to Max. I could see a lot of people signing up for a trial subscription, just to see this movie, and then canceling afterward. As for the references to HBO Max, that's because this is the way it's referenced in the source articles.

    It's good to hear a human voice for a change. Your opinion on those AI voiced sci-fi channels?

    • @TheAtlanteanArchive
      @TheAtlanteanArchive 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for commenting! I don't like the AI-voiced stuff. It sounds artificial, partially because it still isn't good enough yet to catch and convey nuances in tone. It just can't convey the qualities that a real person reading a story can convey, and that takes me out of the experience. I understand the convenience of using AI to a degree, especially in non-fiction works. But stories are a fundamental part of how humans communicate with one another, and I think they lose their impact when not told by real people. Writing stories, as well as reading or acting them out, is an art form that we need to maintain.
