  • “The Lathe of Heaven” is a 1971 novel by renowned fantasy and science-fiction author Ursula K. Le Guin. In a dystopian America, the apparently ordinary if not outright uninteresting George Orr discovers that his dreams have the power to change reality, with the result that only he remembers the former world and understands the changes that have taken place. In an effort to suppress his dreams, Orr overdoses on drugs and ends up in the care of psychiatrist William Haber, who gradually comes to believe Orr’s claims regarding the power of his dreams to affect the physical world. A battle of the wills then ensues between Orr and Haber over the use of this power. Orr simply wants to be rid of it. He has no desire to be a god and feels that he has no right to alter the world on his own authority. Haber, on the other hand, sees this power as the ultimate tool for crafting a utopia-a golden age for all of mankind-and he increasingly feels that George Orr is not the right man to wield this power.

The Atlantean Archive focuses on books, short stories, movies, and television shows of the past, up through the 1980s, although we may cover more current things from time to time as well. I also hope to (eventually) bring you interviews with some of the stars and creators who helped shape the culture that influenced my generation. My emphasis is on horror, science fiction, adventure, fantasy, movies, and TV shows that time forgot, general 70s and 80s nostalgia, and (occasionally) more serious historical content.

This novel was my first experience with Le Guin (although I've only read two novels of hers, this one and The Left Hand of Darkness). I enjoyed them both and cried at the end of The Left Hand of Darkness. The Lathe of Heaven was intriguing and frightening - knowing there will always be people who think they can play God is always unnerving.

Yes, the ease with which some people scheme and try to control everyone around them is frightening. I believe it was C.S. Lewis who said that such people are the worst persecutors because they oppress others with the approval of their own consciences.

Did you know she went to high school with Philip K. Dick? Kinda trippy

I knew that she admired his work, but I didn't know that they attended the same school. Nice! That must be a proud school!

Sounds like George had been reading Neville Godards' Power of Awareness or one of his other books.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Have you read her Earthsea series? I've been interested in picking that up for a while now.

@@TheAtlanteanArchive The Earthsea books are really good with the second book, Tombs of Atuan being one of my favorite fantasy novels. The whole series is distinct from other fantasy series, and because there is a spread of many years between the first three books and the second three, you can see a shift in Le Guin's focus and style. Also, something I count as a benefit is that most of the books are of reasonable length.
