Conan - "The Scarlet Citadel," by Robert E. Howard (Story Review)

  • The second of my two top favorite Robert E. Howard Conan stories--and, I think, one of the best stories for introducing novices to Howard and Conan--is "The Scarlet Citadel." In this story, we're presented with some of Howard's finest and most intense sword-and-sorcery writing. We see an older Conan, now king of Aquilonia, fighting to regain his crown after deception lures him into an ambush and captivity.

The Atlantean Archive focuses on books, short stories, movies, and television shows of the past, up through the 1980s, although we may cover more current things from time to time as well. I also hope to (eventually) bring you interviews with some of the stars and creators who helped shape the culture that influenced my generation. My emphasis is on horror, science fiction, adventure, fantasy, movies, and TV shows that time forgot, general 70s and 80s nostalgia, and (occasionally) more serious historical content.

I read all the Conan stories last September (the Del Rey editions), "The Scarlet Citadel" is very good, but my favorite was "Beyond the Black River." The Conan stories are fun and great escapism.

"Beyond the Black River" is excellent as well, and certainly ranks among my favorites. I agree that the Conan stories are great, escapist fun, although, when he was at his best, Howard infused them with ideals and intricate details as well. Thanks for commenting!

Great video. This has always been my favorite Conan story, and dare I say it, REH does a better job writing a siege battle than Tolkien did

I would agree with that. Tolkien writes rather like a historian in some ways, whereas Howard writes like a warrior who fought in the battle and is telling his tale to a group of admirers in a tavern. He really brings the pulse of battle to life.
      Thanks for commenting!

In the Dark Horse Conan comic Pelias has Tsotha tied between the traces of his wagon, with his severed head hanging from a pole out front. Tsotha runs forward to try and get the head, and Pelias drives the cart. It's hilarious.

That does sound pretty funny. You don't come across that sort of imagery every day!

You completely 'get' Howard, both the man and his work. Great review and great channel!

Nice to hear your thoughts on this!
I recently read it for the first time and I have mixed feelings. Always heard so much about The Scarlet Citadel so maybe it got a little hyped up? I also reda Hour of the Dragon first so that may have ruined it a little bit, as I think that's a much better and fleshed out story.
I did like the beginning and up to when Conan returns for the big epic battle at the end. I love how Howard writes the battle scenes just like in Hour of the Dragon, however I think it fit that story more than it did Scarlet. I don't know, I just prefer those Conan stories that takes place as smaller adventures where he has to figure stuff out, fight a sorcerer or an evil wrongdoer and not BIG EPIC BATTLES ;)
I do however agree that Howard was on top when he wrote Scarlet.
If you're birthday is coming up or if it's already passed, Happy Birthday my friend :)
As I've mentioned before I'd love to read your book and perhaps give it a shoutout/review on my blog or Amazon (which you prefer), and I would like to support you but I'm currently out of a job so I can barely pay for food :/

The Hour of the Dragon is definitely a more fleshed-out story. Howard had a lot of Conan material to draw from at the time at the time he wrote it, and he was a more experienced writer by then as well. The battle sequence is rather long, but the detail he built into it is impressive.
I agree that the best Conan stories are the shorter, more focused tales. Howard probably thought so himself, which I imagine is one reason why he didn't write any other Conan novels.
Thank you for the birthday wishes! I'm sorry to hear about your job situation. I've been there myself. I was laid off from a good, well-paying job back in 2015 due to a corporate buy-out (my job went to Malaysia), and have worked a string of lower-paying jobs ever since. I hope you find something very soon!
In the meantime, I'd be more than happy to send you a free PDF copy of the book, as I mentioned in the video. You're Robin, correct? If so, I still have your email address. Just confirm and I'll send it right away. I'd love an Amazon review, as that helps with visibility, but you can add it to your blog as well, if you'd like.
It's good to hear from you again!

@@TheAtlanteanArchive Yeah but I've heard that he also had to introduce a whole new audience to Conan, so he had to rehash good stuff for them to get the character as well. Battle sequence is long but I agree, VERY detailed and very impressive.
I think it's hard to write a novel that's gonna be based on those smaller adventures, I think that's why they worked so well as just shorter ones.
Hope you had a good day :)
Thanks, and I hope the situation becomes better for you as well. Sorry to hear that but I'm there myself so I here you brother!
Yep it's me Robin. That's really cool of you!
Yeah I'm sorry for being out, my life has taken the turn for the worse of late so I haven't been active. I just haven't had the energy to do anything..
