Crafting a Final Resting Place: Wood Turning an Urn
I found my father-in-laws ashes in what seemed like a small plastic trash can and decided to make something a little nicer. The urn is made from Walnut, Birdseye Maple, and Purpleheart. The handle on the lid is from a China cabinet in their old house that I salvaged for this.

Another Commission? Nearly a disaster...
Переглядів 1,1 тис.8 місяців тому
I had another commission request that was nearly lost in the postal system. Thankfully it was found and delivered but it was quite stressful
My First Commission! Will it be a success?

One of my viewers reached out to me (John) about creating a custom piece. I accepted the commission and worked closely with John to make exactly what he was hoping for. This was a great experience and I learned a lot.
Woodturning for a good cause.

I was asked to donate a custom wood bowl to a Breast Cancer fundraiser at work, this walnut segmented bowl with a maple base turned out amazing. It was fun to build and knowing that it raised money for a good cause meant a lot.

Woodturning The Ambrosia Maple Explosion!
Переглядів 1,4 тис.Рік тому
I purchased a beautiful piece of Ambrosia Maple, 8x8x4 and I made a nice bowl on the lathe. The ambrosia markings in this bowl are amazing and it looks like a color explosion going across the grain of this bowl.
Woodturning, Lasers, Dungeons & Dragons
Переглядів 572Рік тому
I created a Dungeons & Dragons inspired staff for a friend using my lathe and a laser engraver. I wanted to create something for him as a "welcome to being a dad" gift and this is what I came up with. For this project I used cottonwood for the main part of the staff with walnut and bloodwood inlays.
Woodturning the Black Locust Bowl 2.0

I have my last piece of Black Locust, I actually glued to smaller pieces together to make a larger blank. This turned out beautiful and will make a nice addition to my collection.
Woodturning my very first segmented bowl
Переглядів 28 тис.Рік тому
This is my very first segmented bowl build and turning. I couldn't be happer with the final product, the dark Walnut with the lighter Ambrosia Maple combination turned out beatiful. I can't wait to make more in the future.
Woodturning the Bloodwood Bowl

I picked up a super hard piece of bloodwood measuring 8x8x3 and made a nice bowl. Definitely the hardest wood I've ever turned and it made a huge mess.
Woodturning Resin and wood burl bowl
Переглядів 1,8 тис.Рік тому
I picked up an unknown species of wood burl and cast the whole thing in resin. This is my first turning with resin in a bowl this large. It was tough to turn and took forever but the end results are amazing. Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching.

Walnut bowl from a tree in my backyard
Very nice! Do you recall the dimensions? Thank you for demonstration.
Thanks for posting, I just added this to my cart over on the Home Depot’s site. I’m sure you are enjoying it.
I bought one of these and installing today. Appreciate the review. Like the idea of installing a 2x4 "frame" and screwing the eye bolts into that. I can make those frame legs long enough to span my 24" OC ceiling joists and screw the legs to the joists for a solid installation. Also will be less ceiling damage if I ever decide to remove it and take it to another building.
Glad my video helped you out!
I know what you mean about life taking you out of the workshop, well done in this project Josh. Congrats on getting back
Thanks 👍
I've turned some segmented pieces, thry turned out ok.
nice bowl what did you oil it with please. i have just started turning and i have a heap of bloodwood
I’m a fan of the “Tried & True” original, it’s what I finish most of my work with
Update
Hi - I just bought mine and am installing tomorrow. Your video was very helpful - thanks!
Looks great
Thanks!
I enjoyed your making of the bowl. I wanted to offer some feedback as a first time watcher of your video. I do agree that there was redundant footage. I got a bit bored, so kept fast forwarding for example: through the mixing of the resin, and the turning of the bowl- I felt you spent too much time showing these processes. I would have liked to see a bit more of the finished bowl- because it was great. You did a beautiful job.
Thanks for providing the video! Always nice to see something close up before making the purchase. I'm actually picking one up next Friday when it goes on sale (10% off). I'd like to pick up my chain and hooks ahead of time though and I was wondering if you could tell me the inside diameter of the eye bolts that the unit ships with. I'd just like to pick up the strongest chain that will fit through the eyelet opening. Thanks much!
I just checked and the opening of the eyebolt is just over 1/2” so you can get a pretty darn strong chain to fit that. The unit itself isn’t that heavy though, I don’t remember off hand how much it weighs. Glad you liked the video!
@@jbwoodworkingofficial....Great to know....thank you! I believe it's only about 33 lbs., so yes....1/4" or even 3/16" chain should be fine. Can't wait to get mine installed and running. My father passed away in 2011 from pulmonary fibrosis (he was a long-time carpenter for the local school district back when dust collection & air filtration wasn't nearly as good as it is today) and I've been putting off getting a decent filtration system for too long.
How can I order a product?
I do some commission pieces from time to time, you can email me @ jbwoodworkingofficial@gmail.com if you have ideas of what you are looking for. Thanks!
FANTASTIC JOB. THANKS FOR SHARING.
Awesome , great job 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
any insight into whether one can eat cold foods like salad, cereal etc. off the black locust with walnut oil finish without keeling over at the table. Bunch came down near me during ice storm.
Wel that’s a good question. Quick google search says the bark, leaves, and seeds are toxic but nothing really talks about the heartwood itself…. I would only make decorative pieces just to be safe. I obtained this block of wood from a sawmill so I didn’t have to process anything and no bark was on the wood. I don’t know how you would go about processing it yourself as I imagine cutting through the bark and having airborne dust would be bad for you as well…. I recommend doing more research to see if you think it’s safe or maybe just avoid it altogether.
very cool
Oh, as for the glue in the open segments, maybe a dremel?
Someone mentioned Titebond Quick and Thick glue, dries clear and doesn't spread out so much. I ordered some of that and plan to use it on my next build.
@@jbwoodworkingofficial that’s a good idea. Didn’t think of that.
Looking pretty good! I love segmented bowls but they take a bunch of time to get cut and glued. Spray poly finish would work better for that piece. Minwax or Deft I believe are two good ones. Thanks for sharing your work.
Thanks for the tip, I'll purchase some spray poly this weekend.
where is the top?
Cool bowl, thanks for sharing. The last open segment piece I did, I used spray lacquer to finish it. And as far as glues goes, I used Titebond Quick and Thick. It dries clear and because it is so thick it didn’t spread out and cause much issues. I am currently putting together a very large open segment lamp for our front room.
Didn’t know about the Titebond quick and thick, I’ll have to buy some along with the spray lacquer. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for your help 😅
How do you know the size of each layer? And what is the difference in each layers segment?
Thats a great question. I basically made each layer 1/2" larger than the previous layer so 4", 4.5", 5" etc.. I went online and found a segment calculator that told me how large each segment should be for each ring. Later on I found a program called WoodTurnerPro that is really nice, you can print off a cut sheet after you design the bowl in the program and it will tell you how many pieces of each species of wood you need and the length along with the angle of each cut. It takes the mystery out of figuring this all out. I'm still learning to so it's really helpful.
Nice bowl. Perfect thickness. I wish I could get my hands on a piece of your cedar. Here in South Africa I often turn similar (more or less) bowls with Wild Olive - arguably the best wood for turning in the world. Kind regards.
That's a great looking bowl.
Thanks!
Looks great!!
Thanks!
Not too keen on the music. I like to hear the sound of the tools. Beautiful piece.
Yeah Ive been playing around with music in the videos but I think I’d rather hear the tools also…
What is the finish you use?
It’s called “Tried & True” original finish. I use it for pretty much everything, it’s good stuff.
Thanks for the info
Like the video, hate the music.
Fair enough
beautiful bowl, cedar has so much beautiful variation and smells great!! ❤
I totally agree!
Beautiful piece of work 👍
Thanks!
Great piece! I have turned cedar a few times. It is a nice wood to work with. Thanks!
Cool, thanks!
Very nice bowl. You were able to work around the crack you found in the beginning. When you used the shavings to rub the bowl, was that to help sand or was that to make it shinier from the oils in the shavings?
It’s for burnishing. It helps make a smoother finish and helps remove some of the sanding dust left behind.
Very nice. I haven’t turned cedar yet but I have a blank I’ve been waiting to turn though. Great work.
Thanks 👍
love how that turned out, glad it didnt get lost in the mail!
Thanks!
Nice work 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
This was an incredibly useful review. It’s the one piece in my workshop that I’m missing. I like the auto speed feature of this. Let me know how you’ve liked it over the last year and if you’d buy again if shopping for one now.
It’s really been a great air cleaner and would buy it again for sure. I recommend getting the washable electrostatic filter, save you some money in the long run. I actually recorded a follow up video going over some of these things I’m planning to post hopefully later this week!
Just about to do my first. Can I ask how you got the bottom off
Looks like I cut out the part of that video where I did that. I just used my parting tool to turn a groove in the pine just below the walnut and then used a saw to finish it off. It did take a bit of sanding to clean it up but it looks good.
If you have a set of cole jaws for a chuck you can just turn the bowl around and turn it off, also I hate to give un solicited advice, but if you turn the inside of the bottom of the bowl first, then glue the top and bottom together to finish would make it much easier to turn the bottom
Great job. I was also worried the first time I turned a segmented bowl. That really hit home when turning the inside with all of the edges and trying to not dig in too deep with the tool. I suggest turning one just using padauk wood. It is really rich looking after adding the finish.
At 13:30, I think many people would prefer to have the opposite camera view - showing the business end of the turning tool.
absolutely obsessed with how this turned out!!
Gorgeous.
Thank you! Cheers!
looks good 👍
Thanks 👍
Wow that looks amazing. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!
Great work! Absolutely a success!!!
Thank you!
Thanks, Josh, for creating this beautiful walnut and resin bowl that brings warmth to my dining room. It’s a spectacular addition to my home decor. The way the translucent light catches the swirls of resin is truly mesmerizing. You crafted such an exquisite piece. It was indeed a success! Working with you was fun, and a true pleasure. -John
Thanks John! Happy Thanksgiving!
When is part 2?
That’s a great question. I might try to make a follow up here during Christmas break. It’s been running great though, I need to replace my filters but I think it’s helped a lot to keep the dust out of my lungs.
That was a beauty!
Thanks, that bowl was a ton of work but it did turn out great!
Thank you for the review!!!
So great to see a new vid. Its funny b/c I just recently finished my first two segmented bowls as well. (Though not nearly as large.) You clearly took great care with your segments and got good alignment. Mine were very close as well but the addition of glue caused a few degrees of error similar to what you showed. I actually glued them as half rings and then sanded the two mating faces on a flat surface to get perfect matches with no gaps. Seemed a good solution. Love seeing your work as always. I've not used the Oneway bowl steady but have heard great things. They seem to have great products all around.
I purchased the Harvey MG-36 Miter Gauge and that has helped me get super accurate cuts. Even with that the glue and saw dust trick fixes most of those small gaps. I've got another segmented bowl with resin coming up hopefully in a few weeks so keep an eye out for that one.
Love the look and that it is for a great cause.
